Parallel World Light Novelist

Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Word-of-Mouth Explodes and the Industry Takes Notice

In Japan, where light novels and anime culture permeate every level of society, a work with explosive potential spreads through the fandom like wildfire. The author Shiori Takahashi had already established a name for himself with Blue Spring Ride, and having his new work serialized in a heavyweight magazine like Crimson Maple provided the perfect launchpad.

Within days, fans of Anohana were swarming every major forum, discord server, and social media hub, aggressively promoting the series.

”Heartbreaking,” ”Soul-stirring,” and ”The ultimate tear-jerker” were the common refrains. To recruit new readers, the fans were willing to use the most hyperbolic language possible.

Their grassroots efforts worked.

Within a week, a vast majority of regional light novel enthusiasts had at least heard of the title. A general consensus began to form: there was a new masterpiece running in Crimson Maple, and it was worth the emotional investment.

The fan-driven momentum was only the first wave. Local literary critics and media outlets soon pivoted to follow the trend. These experts rarely bothered to hype up the established top-tier hits since everyone already read them. Instead, their audience craved news about the hidden gems, the ”dark horses” that were actually worth their time.

This week, Anohana was the undisputed star of every column and review blog.

”A story of salvation and being saved, Anohana offers a fresh and moving perspective on the weight of friendship,” one critic wrote.

”A rare gem in recent light novel history. It eschews modern tropes for a slow-burn, emotional focus. Once you dive in, you won’t regret a single second,” noted another review.

”Shiori Takahashi, the genius high school author of Crimson Maple Literature, has returned. Some called this work a failure or a sign of burnout. In reality, it was a masterclass in narrative tension. The early Chapters were a deliberate calm before an emotional storm designed to shatter your heart.”

”The two genius rookies of Crimson Maple are locked in a heated battle once again. Between Star Sea and Anohana, who will claim the title of the region’s top newcomer for the year?”

”Is this the dawn of a new era for our local light novel scene? Airi and Shiori Takahashi are performing at a level far beyond any rookies in recent memory. It is highly likely that both will be selected as seeds for the national ’Ascent of New Gods’ competition. I am genuinely curious to see if our region, which has historically struggled in the national finals, can finally make a mark this year.”

”While other publishers have their rising stars, none can match the sheer momentum of Airi and Shiori Takahashi. Airi’s Star Sea has already secured fourth place in the magazine, proving she has the skill to stand among the elite. Meanwhile, Shiori Takahashi has a back catalog with sales of half a million copies per volume. Both are overwhelming favorites for the seed spots.”

As the chatter intensified, the eleventh Chapter of Anohana was released. This installment took a quieter, more reflective tone, focusing on the interactions between the Super Peace Busters now that Menma’s presence was a confirmed reality for them all.

The group threw themselves into creating a handmade firework to fulfill Menma’s wish. The narrative detailed the struggle of sourcing materials and the awkwardness of seeking advice from an old pyrotechnics master. Beneath the surface of their shared goal, the complex web of teenage emotions remained: Anaru’s unrequited love for Jintan, Yukiatsu’s lingering attachment to Menma, and Tsuruko’s silent, watchful gaze on Yukiatsu.

The confirmation of the ghost had disrupted the order of their lives. If Menma was truly there, where were the rest of them supposed to put their own feelings? It was a sincere, bittersweet portrayal of youth, weaving together friendship and the stings of first love.

One scene in particular resonated deeply with the readers. When the ghostly Menma moved toward the river to try and catch a fish, Jintan lunged forward instinctively, disregarding everything to catch her in his arms.

His panic, the sheer terror that the girl who was already a ghost might be swallowed by the water once again, was a moment of pure, raw emotion that left readers feeling both touched and heartbroken.

The data for Chapter eleven reflected this emotional resonance. Anohana received 8,961 reader votes, securing fifth place. Its rating remained a solid 8.9, the fourth highest in the magazine.

Meanwhile, Star Sea continued its own dominance. It reached 12,356 votes, officially breaking into the top three of the magazine. It held a quality rating of 8.9, ranking fifth.

The atmosphere within the Crimson Maple Literature department became incredibly tense. The other twelve authors on the roster were left in a state of bewildered shock.

What is with these rookies? they wondered.

In a typical year, a ”top rookie” might crack the top twelve of a flagship magazine and consider it a victory. But these two were sitting at third and fifth. It was borderline absurd.

Akira stayed in her office until late that night, staring at the reports.

The situation felt hauntingly familiar, almost exactly like the showdown between their first works in the regional sub-magazine a few months prior. In less than a month, they had repeated their previous miracle, scaling the heights of the main magazine’s hierarchy.

”Where on earth did these two freaks come from?” Akira sighed, her mood deteriorating by the minute.

Finding one potential star was a blessing for a publisher.

Finding two genuine, once-in-a-generation geniuses was a nightmare. Akira knew that authors of this caliber rarely stayed with a regional publisher for long. The brighter they shone, the smaller the chance that they would sign a long-term loyalty contract with Crimson Maple.

She had already played her hand by slipping those specific clauses into the Anohana contract. If the series managed to climb one more spot and crack the top four in the final weeks, her leverage would be gone.

August arrived, and with it, the end of the summer peace. Haruto returned to school. For third-year students in Japan, the academic year resumes earlier to prepare for university entrance exams.

He sat in his classroom, looking at the blackboard where the countdown to the exams was written in white chalk. He let out a long sigh. He didn’t feel any of the typical ”exam year” anxiety. It all felt strangely secondary to the world he was building on paper.
