Genetic Engineer in a Tamer's World

The journey through the secondary irrigation ducts was a chore of silent navigation and anaerobic endurance.

Kale moved with the practised ease of a phantom, his green hair tucked beneath a low hood as he slipped through the humid, sap-scented tunnels that bypassed the main checkpoints.

The interior of the massive tree was a labyrinth of living plumbing, where the nutrient-rich fluids of the forest were pumped toward the upper reaches.

He could sense the tired Master-rank guards patrolling the outer root-walkways, their attention focused on the darkening horizon of the Tigerwood Forest rather than the interior ventilation systems.

When he finally breached the seal of room 555, the heavy wooden door clicked shut with a finality that seemed to wash away the lingering roar of the forest.

The interior of the chamber hummed with the ancient tree’s life force, a low-frequency vibration that acted as a balm for his frayed nerves.

Kale did not immediately reach for his journals or the system interface. His skin was caked with dried mud, volcanic ash, and the copper-scented residue of slaughtered beasts.

He headed directly for the washroom, stripping away his ruined, ash-stained coat and the tattered remains of his inner tunic.

He stepped into a wooden bathtub filled with cold, local spring water that had been chilled by the tree’s internal atmosphere.

The freezing temperature was a necessary shock to his Hexarion physiology, a tool to settle the turbulent energy of his recent breakthrough and clear the remaining fog of battle from his mind.

The water turned a murky grey almost instantly as the grime of the subterranean hub was stripped away.

Kale sat in the water for nearly an hour, his eyes closed as he felt the Octagon trait performing its final, minute repairs on his muscle fibres. Once the physical grime was gone and his core temperature had stabilised, the exhaustion finally claimed him.

He collapsed onto his bed, sinking into a deep, groggy sleep that felt like a slow biological corrosion. He slept like a dead dog, his heart and Neo’s four hearts beating in a slow, recovering rhythm that mirrored the silence of the lab.

The next morning, the brilliant noon light poured through the wide balcony windows, waking Kale from a fifteen-hour slumber.

His eyelids felt weighted with lead, and his senses were still adjusting to the baseline of reality. He noticed a tray of food sitting by the door, likely delivered by a Guild servant under Igor’s standing orders to accommodate the Association’s prized guest.

The meal was gargantuan in its proportions. There were slabs of roasted Sabrewolf meat, rare forest fruits that glowed with a faint luminescence, and high-density nutrient grains that pulsed with mana.

Kale devoured the meal with a savage, analytical greed, feeling his Beast Force pathways replenish as his metabolism converted the organic material into raw energy.

Every bite of the delicious meal felt like a necessary infusion of data, a stabilisation of his newly evolved Greater Master Tamer rank.

He could feel the fire affinity within his marrow thrumming with 89% purity, a heat that no longer burned him but felt like a natural extension of his own blood.

Once his internal systems were operational at 100% capacity, he stood up and readjusted his headband to hide the soul sigil on his forehead.

He walked into the experiment room, the greenish light of the specialised lamps casting sharp shadows across his stone table.

”System, activate the Gene Lab,” Kale ordered, his mental voice sharp and focused.

The room was instantly partitioned by greenish holographic screens displaying the double-helix structures of Neo’s Peak Alpha-rank DNA. The first thing that occupied his thoughts was a tactical concealment problem.

Neo had advanced from a Lesser Alpha to a Peak Alpha rank beast in a matter of hours within the leviathan’s stomach, skipping the standard metabolic bottlenecks.

His analytical mind ground through the variables with its usual stoicism. It was biologically impossible for a beast’s strength to rise so abruptly through natural means.

If he walked out into the Guild Base with a Peak Alpha hydra that radiated the aura of a monarch, the prying eyes of the Association and the Church would descend upon him instantly.

They would not just hunt him; they would turn him into a specimen to find the source of such a rapid genetic ascension.

Kale paced the room, his mind racking for a solution. He needed a way to mask the high-density mana signature and the draconic pressure that Neo now exuded.

He considered using a specialised mana-dampening artefact or a reverse-polarity frequency to cancel out the aura. Still, those were too artificial and easily detected by a Master-rank tamer.

Even his master, Lazek, would find it suspicious if Neo suddenly carried the energetic profile of a mundane lizard.

Beside the table, Neo watched its master with its six golden eyes, sensing Kale’s internal worries through their shared soul bond.

The hydra let out a soft, inquisitive growl from all three heads. Suddenly, the creature’s shimmering green scales began to ripple, turning into a deep, matte obsidian that seemed to absorb the lab’s dim light.

Neo activated the Partial Transformation Trait, but instead of shifting into the wedge-headed chameleon form, it focused the morphing on its internal mana circuits.

Kale watched in fascination as the projected mana charts on the Gene Lab screen showed Neo’s energy output plummeting from a Peak Alpha level to that of a Lesser Feral beast.

The hydra had figured out how to use its transformation variable to hide its own strength, compressing its draconic and overpowering bloodline features deep within its marrow.

It was a perfect biological mask, one that utilised the very discord that made Neo an abomination to create a facade of normalcy.

A rare, genuine laugh escaped Kale’s lips as the tension left his shoulders. He reached out and gave the hydra a genuine hug, his fingers gently stroking the warm obsidian scales of the central head.

”You really are one in a trillion, buddy,” he whispered.

He reached into his spatial storage and brought out a certain candy-shaped sweet.

His master, Lazek Oberon, had given him a bag of these before departing for the borders, claiming that chimeric beasts possessed a unique neurological response to the specific sugar-mana compound.

As expected, Neo was overjoyed, all three heads snapping at the treat with a display of pure reptilian glee. The candy was more than just a snack; it was a high-density stimulant that strengthened the bond between tamer and beast.

Kale watched the creature enjoy the sweet, noting how the green starlight within its eyes flickered with contentment. With the concealment issue resolved, Kale turned his focus back to the stone table where his research trajectory lay in disarray.

He spread several sheets of parchment across the stone table, reviewing the notes for the Elemental Resonance Project. Initially, he planned to create the Terra Calyx, an Earth elemental chimaera designed to provide a defensive foundation using Stone Turtle genes.

He had believed that Neo required a physical anchor to withstand the higher-order elemental surges he planned for the future.

However, the variables had changed significantly after the trial of the Flame Salamander and the consumption of the Ancient-rank core.

Kale looked at his own hands, noting the faint green starlight that pulsed beneath his skin, a sign of his 89% fire affinity and the newly gained Flame Resistance (lv3).

Neo now possessed a half-flame core and a fire affinity of 91%, along with the Flame Form and Flame Devour abilities.

The path of least resistance had revealed itself through the heat of the molten river. The earth foundation was no longer the priority.

”The environmental data from the subterranean hub shows that our fire-based integration is operating at 400% efficiency compared to any other element,”

Kale stated for the system records. He decided to change his future trajectory, opting to create a Flame Chimaera instead of an Earth elemental one.

A Flame Chimaera would act as a biological battery to fill the gaps in Neo’s newly gained flame abilities and improve upon the half-core’s stability. It would allow Neo to transition to the Ravager rank without risking spontaneous combustion or genetic rejection.

He began the research on the ”Ignis Core” chimaera, using the Gene Lab’s computational ability to hypothesise the most effective blueprint. He pulled the records of the Magma Needle Fish and the Flame Salamander essence he had collected.

He needed a creature that could act as a living filter for high-density thermal radiation.

The blueprint began to take shape on the holographic screen: a base of Crystal Slime to ensure genetic neutrality, integrated with the refined essence of the Red Volcano Spirit and the salamander’s heat-absorbing skin variables.

This chimaera would not be built for combat, but rather as an elemental catalyst that would resonate with Neo’s Absolute Affinity through their shared tamer bond.

It would be a vessel of pure fire, a living engine designed to refine the raw mana of the forest into a form that Neo could devour without consequence.

Kale worked with rhythmic precision, his pen scratching across the paper as he mapped out the necessary gene-splicing sequences.

”Ignis Core, Mark I,” Kale whispered, the words sounding like a vow in the quiet lab.

He knew he could not begin the physical assembly here in the Tigerwood Forest.

He lacked the high-end stabilisation equipment and the specific mana-vats required to grow a chimaera with such a high elemental affinity.

This was work that would start only after his return to the capital and the Association’s specialised laboratories.

There, under the protection of his master’s reputation, he could manufacture the catalyst that would propel them toward the throne of dragons.

For the next several hours, he worked in silence, his analytical mind grinding through the soul-sigil resonance charts.

He felt the weight of his Hexarion physiology settle into a new equilibrium, the physical and mental stamina from his master’s artefacts keeping his focus steady.

Neo lay coiled on the table, occasionally hissing in its sleep as it processed the massive amount of energy it had consumed.

By the time he finished the makeshift blueprint, the sun was setting over the forest once more, casting a bruised purple light through the balcony windows.

He closed the research journal, his eyes fixed on the darkening horizon as the quiet hum of the lab settled over him.

The path to his elemental ascension was now documented in ink and mana, waiting only for the safe harbour of the capital to become a reality.
