Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Joren Bell found the first promising lead four hundred miles from the city and two sentences apart in a caravan master’s account.

”Moonlight at noon,” The man said. ”Fey creatures in the trees. Orcs on the high ground beyond them.”

Joren stopped writing.

Across the table, Basil moved his cup away from the map before his sleeve could knock it over. Orren continued sorting the other reports they had purchased from the caravansary clerk.

”Did you see both places?” Joren asked.

”I saw the forest entrance. My outrider visited the highlands. Same journey, same trouble, and more broken equipment than either was worth.”

”How far apart were they?”

The caravan master pointed toward a road that climbed through three frontier districts before disappearing into territory the city maps reduced to mountains.

”A day, perhaps two. We were delayed after the second town.”

The answer was close enough to justify travel.

Joren had spent the previous six days following stories that failed before anyone needed to saddle a horse. One rumor of a supposed country inside a dungeon was really a painted ceiling above an underground market. A fortress guarding an undead land belonged to a military prison built along a necromancer’s border. Three different merchants claimed to have visited dungeons with living towns, but all described adventurer camps that grew outside the entrances.

This report contained two names from the invasion maps without Joren providing either one.

Forest.

Highlands.

The wording was not proof. It was enough to move the lead above the others.

”Tell us about the moonlight.” Orren said.

”Blue and silver. The trees were too tall for the cavern that held them. The creatures vanished when our guards tried to follow.”

”Fey Hounds?”

”Something like them. Smaller, I think. I remained with the wagons.”

Joren wrote that uncertainty beside the account. Fey Nights had contained fey hounds, but every forest with fey magic could produce light where none belonged. The challenge maps had taught him how quickly people transformed resemblance into certainty.

The caravan master remembered no fortress, dwarven airship, or country. He had not entered either site himself. His guards treated the two locations as parts of one dangerous stretch of road, and his memory joined them the same way.

Joren paid for copies of the route records and sent a preliminary message home.

[Potential paired lead: Moonlit fey forest and nearby orc highlands reported along northern caravan road. Investigating. No confirmed connection between sites.]

He addressed it to the archive team rather than Kale personally. Hundreds of scouts were sending versions of the same message. A claim became useful only after someone returned with evidence.

The three men left before sunrise.

Joren had selected Basil because he could read the spatial marks left by dungeon entrances without attempting to open them. Orren had spent twenty years drawing roads for armies and merchant houses. Neither had joined the seven-day invasion. Joren wanted companions who would examine what stood in front of them instead of forcing every new place to match a memory of Corathen.

They traveled through one public portal, crossed a river by ferry, and hired horses at the last city willing to guarantee the road. The farther north they rode, the more often local maps ended with a useful road and began again with warnings.

The first dungeon occupied a ravine beneath an abandoned watchtower.

Silver moss covered the stone. Pale tree roots emerged from the entrance and disappeared into soil too shallow to support them. Three inns, two equipment shops, and an adventurers’ guild office stood nearby. If this had been the entrance used by the challenge army, secrecy had failed completely.

Joren dismounted anyway.

The guild sold route summaries openly. He purchased every current version while Basil examined the entrance from beyond its ward line.

[Moonshade Thicket.]

[Registered depth: Three stages.]

[Recommended party size: Four.]

[Primary threats: Fey lights, thornlings, illusion paths, moon cats.]

[Final encounter: Keeper Beneath the Bough.]

The interior descriptions matched the caravan master’s forest. The first stage remained beneath artificial night regardless of the hour outside. Illusion paths changed whenever a party entered. Small creatures crossed short distances in flashes of pale light.

None were fey hounds and no route led to highlands.

The third stage ended in a root chamber less than six miles from the entrance by the guild’s best estimate. Successful parties exited through the same arch in the ravine. The guild recorded twelve years of clears and no fourth level.

”It could have changed.” Orren said as they compared the records outside. He tried to keep the possibility that this was their target,

That possibility had been included in their instructions. A dungeon could add levels. It could hide routes from ordinary visitors. The target they sought had concealed an entire country behind what looked like a conventional sequence.

Joren returned to the guild office and requested older maps.

The clerk brought him eleven boxes.

For two hours, they traced every reported branch. Basil compared mana signatures recorded by local mages. Orren laid recent maps over old ones and marked changes in the paths.

The Dungeon Moonshade Thicket had grown twice. Its entrance signature had remained stable. Both expansions appeared in the guild archive within days because adventurers found the new routes during ordinary attempts.

The oldest box contained the dungeon’s registration charter.

Its core had awakened fifty-three years earlier.

The dungeon they sought had not existed then.

Joren copied the date and closed the box.

They did not enter the forest. Their orders prohibited it, and a clear registration history gave them no reason to risk lives proving what paper already established.

The report of Orcs waited farther north.

The caravan master’s estimate of a day’s travel assumed fresh horses, dry roads, and a guide willing to use a military cut through the hills. Joren’s group had one of those. Rain removed the other two.

They reached the highland town late the following afternoon with mud to their knees.

There was no dungeon entrance.

Orcs controlled the ridge because it was an orc settlement.

Stone homes followed the curve of the high ground. Terraced gardens covered the lower slope. A timber wall protected the only approach wide enough for wagons. Spears appeared above it as the three strangers rode toward the gate.

Joren slowed well outside bow range and displayed the travel seal issued by the nearest city.

The guards let them enter after checking their weapons and purpose. They found an inn, paid for rooms, and asked the owner where visiting adventurers went.

”South.” The orc said.

He pointed toward the road they had used.

”Moonshade Thicket?” Joren asked.

”If they enjoy being lost in glowing trees. Most trade here. The north road has worse things than a forest.”

The highlands named in the caravan account were the hills surrounding the town. The danger had been a collapsed road, two territorial wyverns, and a group of bandits who used orc-made arrows in the hope that survivors would blame the settlement.

The outrider had reached town after losing a wagon. He saw orc guards on the ridge, assumed they controlled the trouble, and carried that conclusion back to his employer.

Joren asked to see the damaged wagon.

It remained behind the inn while the caravan company argued over repairs. Orren examined the broken axle. Basil found no dungeon mana in the wood, metal, or road dust still packed around the wheels.

One arrow remained lodged beneath the driver’s bench.

The innkeeper brought a local fletcher to inspect it. The fletcher turned the shaft once, pointed out a maker’s mark cut backward, and showed them three differences between the arrowhead and the ones produced in town.

”The bandits buy stolen heads and make the shafts themselves.” He said. ”They have been doing it since spring.”

”Have they been caught?” Basil asked.

”Some. Not enough.”

The local militia had maps of the attacks. Every incident occurred beyond the ridge, nowhere near Moonshade Thicket. The distance between the forest dungeon and the orc settlement had created a story because both appeared in one caravan’s bad week.

Joren spent the evening reconstructing how the report spread.

The caravan master’s outrider told guards at the first inn that a fey forest and orc highlands had cost them equipment. A traveling adventurer repeated the account in the next city and added that the orcs waited beyond the forest. A collector searching for unusual dungeons copied the story into a private catalog beneath the heading Two-Land Dungeon.

The collector’s catalog reached one of Kale’s university contacts.

By the time Joren heard it, two unrelated places had become two consecutive dungeon levels.

Nothing about the process required anyone to lie.

That made it more dangerous than a deliberate false report.

A liar could be challenged on motive, payment, and whatever part of the story changed under pressure. Each person in this chain believed the version he repeated. The caravan master had joined two losses because both delayed the same journey. The outrider blamed the only armed people he saw near the northern road. The adventurer assumed a dangerous forest must connect to the dangerous hills beyond it. The collector removed every uncertainty when he shortened the account for his catalog.

Joren added each step to the report. Future scouts needed more than the conclusion that this lead was wrong. They needed to recognize how a genuine detail could gather other genuine details until the combination described a place that had never existed.

Orren drew a line between the two sites and wrote sixty-eight miles above it.

Basil placed the separate entrance signature beside the forest.

The distance and the signature did more than contradict the story. They explained it.

He wrote his conclusion before sleeping.

[Lead disproven.]

[Moonshade Thicket is an independently registered three-stage dungeon awakened fifty-three years ago. No orc territory exists within it. Reported highlands refer to an orc settlement approximately sixty-eight road miles north. Settlement contains no known dungeon entrance. Recent caravan losses resulted from road collapse, wyverns, and bandit activity.]

[Source chain conflated multiple reports during retelling. Recommend requiring a single witness to connect at least two target features before dispatching full survey teams.]

Orren added the corrected road map. Basil attached both mana analyses.

Joren sent the packet at dawn.

A reply arrived while they prepared the horses.

[Archive acknowledges. Continue northern route. New reports available at next portal office.]

No complaint accompanied the failed lead. Failure was information when it removed the right place from a list of wrong ones.

The local fletcher met them at the gate before they left.

”If you are heading north, avoid the old military cut.” He said. ”Rain took half the ledge last night.”

Joren thanked him and marked the closure on Orren’s map.

”What are you looking for?” The fletcher asked.

The cover story permitted them to discuss unusual trade destinations. It did not permit details about the core hunt.

”A dungeon containing permanent settlements.” Joren said. ”Roads, farms, and residents who never leave when adventurers do.”

”That sounds less like a dungeon.”

Joren mounted his horse.

”We thought so too.”

They took the eastern road around the damaged ledge.

Behind them, the moonlit forest continued admitting parties of four. North of it, orc guards watched a road that had never passed through a dungeon. Both places fit part of the story Joren had been sent to find.

Neither fit enough.

The correct dungeon remained somewhere beyond the next report.

The search for Crag Dungeon continued.
