Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Perrin’s party spent three days learning how to travel on horseback.

They rode the Dawnhoof trails each morning. In the afternoons, they practiced using weapons without twisting out of their saddles. At night, they studied the record of their failed attempt and marked every place where one rider had forced the rest of the column to react.

Perrin stopped assuming the leader belonged at the front.

The scout chose the route. The shield bearer controlled the space around the wounded. The healer stayed where he could reach the mounts and passengers. Their mage watched above and behind the column. Perrin occupied whichever position connected the others.

On the third day, they completed a five-person trail race without winning it.

They finished fourth.

All five crossed the line together.

Captain Sylwen waited beside the forest road with the Dawnhoof Patrol. Aelith and the other rescued prisoners stood among the horses. Nobody remembered dying during the previous attempt, but Sylwen looked at Perrin’s seat before acknowledging him.

”You have practiced. The ground must have taught you quickly.”

The patrol began moving.

Perrin’s gelding followed the first turn without stepping backward. He kept his eyes on the trail ahead and allowed the horse to choose its footing over roots. When the column entered the steeper forest, the five adventurers maintained enough distance for every mount to move without opening gaps around the rescued prisoners.

The Razorwings found them before midday.

Their shadows crossed the trail. Bronze scales flashed beneath the canopy. This time, Perrin did not draw his sword until Sylwen ordered the column forward.

The party’s scout called the direction of each approach. Their mage created short walls that guided the low-flying creatures into lanes covered by elven archers. The shield bearer protected the horses carrying wounded prisoners rather than attacking anything beyond reach.

Perrin’s gelding turned beneath him as a Razorwing dropped through the branches.

He moved with it.

His sword struck the creature once. He did not chase it into the trees. The horse returned to formation before the next shadow crossed the road.

The encounter ended with every mount above half stability.

Sylwen gave Perrin a single nod.

He accepted the praise without asking whether she intended to say anything.

The fey mist appeared during the afternoon. The patrol entered the crossing in a close line. Perrin saw the tiny blue quickling on a branch, but this time it carried an entire cheese wheel that could not possibly have fit inside its coat.

The creature held it toward him.

Perrin kept riding.

”You are learning.” His healer said.

Perrin shook his head. ”That was not my cheese.”

”You are learning slowly.”

No one left the path. The clearing with the formal dinner appeared between the trees and vanished behind them. Streams flowed uphill. Small doors opened in tree trunks after the horses passed. The crossing shortened the distance without becoming an encounter they needed to defeat.

They emerged into the low hills before sunset.

The party found the first hooked line tied between two stones.

Their scout raised her hand before a mount touched it. She dismounted long enough to cut the line, then showed them the dull scales caught around one knot. The raiders knew where the Dawnhoof Patrol had passed during the last attempt.

They had prepared too.

Sylwen divided the column before entering the wagon ruts. The wounded prisoners and their escort took the lower road. A smaller mounted group followed a parallel ridge in plain view. Perrin’s party remained with the prisoners instead of joining the more obvious formation.

Scaled riders attacked the ridge.

Their narrow two-legged mounts raced beside the elves. Razorwings descended over them. For several minutes, the ambush appeared committed to the wrong target.

Then three raiders rose from the grass beside the lower road.

Perrin’s scout had warned them to expect it.

The mage blocked the first hooked line with a sloping sheet of stone. The shield bearer moved between the second rider and the wounded. Perrin stayed on the opposite side instead of crossing the column to help.

That allowed him to stop the third.

The fight moved with the road. The party did not try to surround mounted enemies while protecting a longer formation. They denied access to the carrying frames, forced the raiders away, and continued toward the Shattered Watch.

When the ridge patrol turned back to rejoin them, the remaining attackers withdrew.

The first attempt had ended in that ambush.

The second continued.

The Shattered Watch stood above a narrow valley. Its tower had been broken near the middle. Great claw marks cut through the upper stones, and frost covered the side facing the mountain pass.

Captain Sylwen ordered the rescued prisoners into the lower refuge. The wounded disappeared through protected doors. Aelith accepted a bow from one of the riders and joined the defenders on the ridge.

The level objective changed.

[The rescued prisoners have reached the Shattered Watch.]

[Prepare the valley defense.]

[Veyrath approaches at dusk.]

Perrin looked toward the sky.

”A dragon?”

Sylwen lowered her spear. ”The tyrant that broke the watch and claimed the pass.”

The party had reached the same final enemy as the dwarven airship route from a different direction.

They did not have the Stonewing’s wreckage, deck weapons, or dwarven engineers. They had horses, elven riders, high ground, and an intact section of watchtower.

The remaining hour became preparation.

The Dawnhoof Patrol cleared three riding lanes through the valley. Archers carried arrows into the broken tower. The mage strengthened the lowest wall without trying to rebuild the entire structure. Perrin’s party moved loose stone away from the routes the horses would need after dark.

They found an old chain thrower beneath the tower floor. It had been designed to catch flying creatures approaching the pass, but Veyrath’s first attack buried its base beneath frozen stone.

The shield bearer and Perrin cleared it. Their mage restored the turning groove. Elven riders carried the chain across the valley and fixed its far end around a living pine.

The weapon could fire once.

At dusk, clouds formed above the pass.

Veyrath descended through them.

The dragon’s scales reflected the last sunlight like broken blue glass. Frost gathered along its jaws. Smaller scaled creatures moved across the ridges beneath it, responding to the same roar.

[Veyrath, Tyrant of the Shattered Sky]

The Dawnhoof Patrol did not wait beneath the tower.

The riders spread through the valley. Half fired from horseback. The others drew the smaller creatures away from the refuge. Perrin’s party remained mounted and moved between the groups, reinforcing whichever lane Veyrath threatened.

Their first attacks barely harmed the dragon.

Veyrath’s freezing breath crossed an empty riding lane. The elves changed direction before the ice settled. The dragon followed and exposed its side to the broken tower.

Aelith released the chain thrower.

The hooked chain caught one wing.

It did not pull Veyrath from the sky. The pine bent. Stones tore from the tower base. The drag forced the dragon low enough for the mounted formation to reach it.

Perrin’s party attacked during passes instead of stopping beneath the claws. The scout called the turns. The shield bearer drew Veyrath toward open ground. The mage struck the chain when frost tried to lock it in place. The healer kept the mounts stable while the patrol wore down the trapped wing.

Veyrath tore free.

The broken hook remained beneath its scales.

The battle moved into its second phase. Smaller creatures filled the ridges. The dragon began targeting horses rather than riders. Every dismissed mount reduced the patrol’s ability to control the valley.

Perrin lost his gelding after two glancing strikes.

He did not chase the dragon on foot.

He climbed into the broken tower, joined Aelith beside the archers, and helped protect the remaining chain mechanism. His party continued using its mounts because keeping four riders mobile mattered more than keeping five adventurers together.

Veyrath’s health reached fifty percent.

An engine roared beyond the western ridge.

A full-sized dwarven airship emerged beneath the clouds.

The Stonewing carried tears in its balloon and scorch marks across its hull, but it remained in the sky. Razorwing bodies hung from one section of rigging. A broken boarding chain trailed beneath the vessel.

Captain Durna Ironwake stood at the forward rail.

”Dragon!” She shouted. ”You owe me three altitude lines and an engine valve!”

Veyrath turned from the elves.

[The Stonewing has entered the battle.]

[Assistance condition met: Reduce Veyrath to half health.]

[Allied units do not affect party clear eligibility.]

The dragon climbed toward the airship.

Dwarven deck weapons fired together. The first harpoon missed. The second entered beside the old chain wound and pulled Veyrath away from the balloon.

The arrival changed the battle without winning it.

Veyrath tore across the Stonewing’s outer ropes. Dwarves fought to keep the vessel level while the Dawnhoof Patrol cleared the creatures gathering beneath it. Perrin’s party connected the two allied forces. The scout called the dragon’s turns from horseback. Their mage used the tower to signal Durna’s weapon crews. The healer moved between injured riders and dwarves lowered from the ship.

Perrin saw the final plan before anyone explained it.

The Stonewing could not hold Veyrath indefinitely. The elves could not reach it while it climbed. The remaining watch chain was still fixed to the pine, and the dwarven harpoon line crossed above it.

Perrin freed the chain from the broken thrower.

Aelith helped him drag it to the tower’s highest surviving floor. When Veyrath pulled against the airship, Perrin threw the watch chain across the harpoon line. The two restraints caught.

The dragon’s own movement tightened them together.

Durna ordered the Stonewing forward.

Sylwen led every remaining rider in the opposite direction.

Veyrath lost the sky.

It struck the valley floor between dwarven fire and the Dawnhoof charge. The final stage remained dangerous, but the dragon no longer controlled where the battle happened. The elves kept smaller creatures away. The dwarves maintained tension on the damaged wing. Perrin’s party attacked the exposed scales around both chains whenever the dragon tried to rise.

Veyrath broke the pine.

It broke the first harpoon.

It did not break both allied forces before its health failed.

[Veyrath, Tyrant of the Shattered Sky, defeated.]

The clouds above the pass opened.

Captain Durna landed the damaged Stonewing beside the watch. She looked from Perrin’s party to Sylwen’s mounted patrol.

”You kept the dragon on the ground.”

Sylwen looked toward the airship. ”You kept it from returning to the sky.”

Perrin waited for the two commanders to argue over which contribution mattered more.

Durna struck one fist against her chest.

Sylwen lowered her spear in answer.

The alternate route had not proved easier than the dwarven airship. It demanded a different set of skills. Perrin’s party never touched an engine control, defended a balloon, or boarded another vessel. They learned to protect a moving column, fight from mounts, use open terrain, and coordinate with riders who never stopped long enough to form an ordinary defensive line.

The destination remained the same because both roads belonged to the same world. Veyrath threatened the dwarves in the sky and the elves on the ground. Whichever people carried the adventurers to the valley fought beside them first. The other force arrived only after the party proved it could survive half of the final battle.

[The Elven Road completed.]

[First alternate clear achieved.]

[Rescued prisoners: All.]

[Dawnhoof mounts surviving: 18.]

[First-clear rewards awarded.]

A reward chest appeared beneath the Shattered Watch.

Perrin opened it only after checking that the patient brown gelding had been restored with the other dismissed mounts.

The horse looked at him, then stepped sideways.
