Dawn Experiment

# Day 16 - 17:05

The ”war council” was held in the one room on Blue Oasis where the air still tasted clean—Verne’s private dining salon, now converted into a situation room. It was soundproofed, with blackout windows and a lock that made the security office door look like it belonged on a toy safe. Zhao counted twelve people, including every ranking officer, the two senior security personnel, and himself, somehow, as the most valuable asset in the room.

He sat with his back to the wall, eyes darting between the faces. Maggie and Victoria were both in their black security shirts, not a millimeter of skin showing. Kim was in a threadbare coverall, her hands blackened and raw from the day’s marathon of last-ditch repairs. Vivienne and Isabelle Grant flanked the captain, both holding tablets. The air was a mix of sweat, anxiety, and—strangest of all—a faint trace of cologne from someone’s attempt to make the room less like a tomb.

For the first several minutes, nobody talked. They just listened to the hum of the air system and the click of the clock as it ticked them closer to dawn.

Linh broke first. ”If we lose him,” she said, pointing at Zhao with her chin, ”the ship’s done, right?” Her voice cut through the hush like a blade.

Iqbal inclined her head precisely two centimeters. ”Absence of immunological vector results in complete viral saturation within approximately 168 hours. Total crew metamorphosis becomes inevitable.”

Her voice remained as clinically detached as if discussing bacterial growth in a petri dish rather than their impending deaths. Aida, who’d been silent in the corner, finally spoke up. ”I’ve been treating the early symptoms for weeks now. Without him,” she gestured toward Zhao with a tired hand, ”it’s just buying time. The mutations accelerate. First the headaches that don’t respond to medication, then the skin lesions we can’t close. After that...” She let the sentence hang unfinished in the air.

Victoria leaned forward, her eyes locked on Zhao’s. ”She’s not going to kill you, mate,” she said, voice dropping to a near-whisper. ”That’d be wasteful. You’ll be kept alive—barely—hooked up to machines, pumped full of nutrients, drained of whatever they need. Just like they did with the women on the Victoria. Livestock.” Her jaw tightened at the memory. ”Only difference is, you’ll be the prize bull.”

Kim said, “Hell of a way to live.”

Nobody laughed.

Zhao looked at Verne. “What’s the key they’re after? If we’re dead anyway, why not just give it to them?”

Verne’s eyes were dark. “Classified.”

Vivienne’s lips compressed to a line. “With respect, Captain, if we’re all facing execution, now is not the time for secrets.”

Verne didn’t answer.

Isabelle spoke up, her voice calm, almost bored: “If they can take Zhao by force, why wait twenty-four hours? Why not just board us now?”

Vivienne said, “They’re not afraid of us. Maybe they want to conserve resources. Ammunition, personnel.”

Maggie shook her head. “They could take us with blunt force. No need for tricks.”

Victoria tapped her fingers on the table, the sound like distant gunfire. “It’s me. They’re afraid of me.”

The whole table turned. Victoria gave a crooked smile, then said, “Back on the Victoria, I killed a dozen of their boarders before they took the ship. Their head of security has a score to settle.” She looked at Maggie, then Verne. “First time I saw you two, I thought you were Red Solstice. Only made sense.”

Maggie’s jaw flexed, but she didn’t comment.

Victoria kept going, her voice a little brighter now, enjoying the attention. ”They replenish losses fast. I don’t know how—maybe recruiting from other ships, or raiding the islands. But their top team hates my guts, and if they see me on deck, they’ll double or triple the assault force just to make sure I’m dead.” Her spine straightened as her face turned to granite. ”Listen—we can’t win a war of attrition. The only way to stop them permanently is to cut the head off the snake. Take out their command structure, destroy their ship. Otherwise, they’ll just keep coming in waves until we’re overwhelmed.”

Vivienne watched her, eyes sharp. “If you’re their obsession, maybe you can be our distraction.”

Victoria grinned, all teeth. “That’s the idea.”

Verne spoke, voice low. “Spell it out.”

Victoria outlined her plan with the smooth certainty of a person who’d practiced this speech a hundred times in her head. “We let them see me on your security cam. I’ll suit up, walk every deck, make them think I’m running your defense.” She spread her hands, fingers splayed. “When they come, I won’t be here. I’ll take a diver’s rig, go over the side, and board Red Solstice while they’re focused on you.”

Kim looked skeptical. “You’ll get cut to pieces.”

Victoria shook her head. “I know their watch rotations. They don’t check below the waterline. If I can get to the aft utility hatch, I’ll be inside before they know what hit them.”

Verne said, “And then?”

“Find their command, blow the power grid, kill Rosa if possible. If I die, at least I take a few of the psychos with me.”

Maggie nodded, impressed. “That could buy us hours.”

Kim scratched at a burn on her wrist. “If they recall their boarding team, you could take them out with their own guns.”

Victoria nodded. “That’s the plan. Maybe a few minutes of chaos would be enough to get the rest of you off the grid. Or at least—” she smiled at Zhao, not unkindly, “—put you out of reach.”

Verne shook her head. “We don’t run. We fight, but we do it on our terms.”

Maggie said, “We use the corridors. Barricades, choke points. Make them pay for every meter.”

Kim added, ”I’ve still got those bulkhead panels we salvaged from Victoria. We could reconfigure the service corridors—” she sketched a quick diagram on her tablet ”—move walls, create false passages. They’ll have memorized our layout assuming it mirrors Victoria’s. We funnel them straight into choke points they won’t see coming.”

Verne nodded sharply. ”Do it. If they’re working from Victoria’s schematics, let’s make sure those become a liability, not an advantage.” She turned to the rest of the table, her voice hardening. ”Only Maggie and I take the frontline. The rest of you—” her eyes swept over the newer security personnel, ”—aren’t ready for professional killers. You’ll be target practice, nothing more.” She pointed at the ship’s layout on the tablet. ”Focus on getting non-combatants to safety zones and setting up our last line of defense. I need coordinators, not casualties.”

Maggie nodded, but a heavy silence fell over the room. Eyes darted between faces, calculating the odds. Two against thirty trained killers. No one said it aloud, but the truth hung in the air like smoke—Victoria’s confident smirk, Verne’s steel-eyed resolve, Maggie’s tight nod—these might be the last memories they’d have of them. Kim’s fingers twitched against the table edge. Isabelle’s breathing quickened almost imperceptibly. Even Iqbal’s clinical detachment seemed to falter for a heartbeat. Vivienne’s hand tightened around her stylus until her knuckles whitened, while Aida—who’d spent months administering treatments that merely delayed the inevitable—closed her eyes briefly, the shadows beneath them suddenly more pronounced against her pale skin.

Isabelle cleared her throat, her voice cutting through the heaviness in the room. ”Anyone who can’t fight stays below in the rec deck.” Anyone who can hold a weapon gets one. We rotate watches, and if the main corridor falls, we retreat to the panic room.”

Zhao said, “We have a panic room?”

Kim shrugged. ”I found a void in the forward hull that’s not in any of the schematics. No doors, no hatches. Just empty space where something should be. The kind of thing you build when you don’t want anyone knowing what’s inside.”

Verne nodded. “We stash rations, water, med kits. Anything we need to last a week.”

Vivienne said, “What about the key?”

Verne looked at Zhao. “It’s a dead man’s switch,” she said, very quietly. “If you die, it triggers. I don’t know what it does, only that every faction in the Atlantic wants it.”

Kim stared, then said, “You’re kidding.”

Isabelle’s eyes widened. “It could be anything. Self-destruct code, data dump, even a targeting beacon.”

Victoria just smiled wider. “I love this job.”

For the first time all night, the crew looked less like a funeral and more like a team. Everyone was talking now, refining the plan, arguing over who’d guard which station. Zhao listened, then stood and walked to the window. The sea was black, no moon, but out there, beyond the glare, the Red Solstice waited.

He pictured what would happen if Victoria failed, or if the boarders cut through the hull like they said they could. Would he turn into a weapon, or just another name on Carmona’s list of livestock?

He looked at his hands, at the shallow scars along his knuckles from a dozen small cuts. He remembered Vivienne’s touch, Aida’s voice, the way Mei-Lin had cradled his head when he couldn’t sleep. Even if there was no tomorrow, he owed it to them to try.

Verne’s voice cut through the noise. “You have your orders. We meet on the bridge at oh-three-hundred. Victoria, get ready. Maggie, rotate the shifts and post snipers.”

Isabelle said, “I’ll coordinate the rec deck. If we can get enough bodies, maybe we last an hour.”

The meeting ended in a rush of motion—people running for the armory, for engineering, for the crew quarters to wake the sleeping. Zhao walked out last, trailed by the smell of coffee and cordite.

He went up to the top deck, the wind howling so loud it erased the alarms inside. For a long time, he just stood at the rail, feeling the roll of the ship beneath his feet.

He didn’t pray. But he wished for a miracle.

A shadow shifted near the bow—Verne, silhouetted against the night, her hands gripping the rail. She turned, unsurprised. ”This is where I come to think,” she said, voice barely audible above the wind. She studied his face. ”If you want answers—about Sophie, Site 34, why you’re immune—I’ll tell you everything. While I still can.” Her eyes drifted toward the invisible horizon where Red Solstice waited.
