Dawn Experiment

#Day 37 — 08:45

The sea had changed.

Zhao felt it through the hull as he sat at the low table, the bowl of rice warm in his hands, the ship rolling beneath him with a rhythm that was different from the Mediterranean. Heavier. Slower. The kind of swell that came from open ocean and southern latitudes. Through the slanted window, the water was gray-green, whitecaps scattered across the surface like torn paper.

”We’re well into the South Atlantic now,” Vivienne said, as if reading his thoughts. She was already dressed, her captain’s uniform crisp, her hair pinned. She stood at the window, watching the horizon. ”Linh says another three days to the Falklands. Maybe less, if the wind holds.”

Aida poured tea. Mei-Lin passed the pickled vegetables. Chen was still in her room, through the new door, already connected to NUWA, already working. The family ate together in the familiar silence of the Willow, but there was something different about this morning. Purpose, maybe. Or anticipation.

Vivienne turned from the window. ”Mei-Lin. I want you at the council meeting today.”

Mei-Lin’s chopsticks stopped halfway to her mouth. ”Me?”

”You have expertise they’ll need.”

Mei-Lin looked at Aida, then at Zhao. Her expression shifted—surprise, then pleasure, quickly hidden. ”The herbs?”

”Among other things.” Vivienne’s smile was small but warm. ”Eat quickly. We leave in ten.”

They finished breakfast faster than usual. Aida kissed Zhao goodbye, quick and absent, already thinking about her own work. Mei-Lin straightened her blouse twice before they left, and Zhao caught her checking her reflection in the dark glass of the window.

He kissed her forehead. ”You’ll be fine.”

She smiled, nervous, and followed Vivienne out.

The door closed. The Willow was quiet.

Zhao sat alone for a moment, finishing his tea, listening to the ship. Then he gathered the bowls, carried them to the kitchenette, and began to wash.

#Day 37 — 09:30

The command room had changed since NUWA woke.

The screens were still there, still glowing, but the ouroboros logo was gone. In its place, the woman with the snake’s body—NUWA’s symbol—watched from the corner of every display, calm and patient. The room felt different, too. Lighter, somehow. Or maybe that was just the relief of knowing the Commission could no longer see them.

The council had arranged themselves in their usual places. Vivienne at the head, Sophie still absent—recovering, but monitoring through NUWA’s feed. Victoria stood with her arms crossed, her weight on one hip. Maggie sat at the side table, reviewing a weapons inventory. Linh was at the navigation station, her fingers on the controls. Elena and Isabelle shared a bench near the back. Kim was there, her leg stretched out, the wound healing but still tender.

And Mei-Lin sat in the chair beside Aida, her hands folded in her lap, her eyes moving around the room like she was memorizing it.

Vivienne began without preamble.

”The primary order of business is the hunt. We’ve identified the Jason Islands, just off the Falklands, as our most likely site. Uninhabited. Good seal populations. No known Commission presence.”

Victoria spoke up. ”The Falklands have a British military installation. We don’t know if the Commission is still using it. Could be abandoned. Could be occupied. Could be crawling with crawlers.”

Linh nodded. ”I’ve been running long-range radar sweeps. Nothing yet. But military vessels can be stealthy. And there’s always the satellites.”

Vivienne’s jaw tightened. ”What do you recommend?”

”Drone scout first,” Linh said. ”The new customized drone can reach 100 kilometers. I’ll send it low, keep it off radar. If the coast looks clear, we approach. If not—” She shrugged. ”We find another site.”

”Risk?”

”There’s always risk. But we’ve been lucky so far. And the Jason Islands are small. Isolated. If the Commission wanted them, they’d have to make an effort.”

Victoria uncrossed her arms. ”What about Carmona? She might know something about the Falklands. Commission operations, supply routes, safe houses.”

Vivienne looked at her. ”Have you gotten anything from her?”

Victoria’s expression darkened. ”She’s stubborn. Won’t talk. The only thing that gets a reaction is the breast pump. She hates it.” She almost smiled. ”But information? Nothing.”

”Then we proceed without her.”

The council moved through the details. Victoria would lead the hunt—small team, two boats, maybe two or three seals. Firearms only if necessary. The seals would be processed on the beach, brought back in chunks. Maggie would stay on the Blue Oasis with the rest of security.

Mei-Lin listened, her eyes following the conversation, her hands still in her lap.

Then Vivienne turned to her.

”The Jason Islands are uninhabited. No predators. No expected crawlers. But there may be opportunities for foraging. NUWA has identified several plant species in the region that could be useful for medicine. For your recipes.”

Mei-Lin’s eyes widened. ”Foraging?”

”We have limited winter clothing. Enough for two people, maybe three. I was thinking you and Noor could go ashore. An engineer and a security guard would stay with the boat, but the foraging itself would be yours.”

Mei-Lin’s smile broke across her face—genuine, bright. ”I would love that.”

Zhao felt a spike of worry. ”The cold—”

”I’ll be careful.” She reached across the arm of her chair and touched his hand. ”And I’ll have Noor with me. We’ll look after each other.”

Zhao wanted to argue, but Vivienne was already moving on.

”Zhao. There may be fishing opportunities off the coast. The modified tender can handle it, but you can’t stay out long. The cold is dangerous.”

He nodded, already thinking. ”Baits, not lures. We can wait inside the boat while the lines are out. And I want to build cages—shellfish traps. Crabs, shrimp, anything we can catch. We have holding tanks on the aft deck. If we keep them alive, they’ll stay fresh longer.”

Kim raised her hand. ”I can help with the tanks. We have spare materials from the workshop.”

Vivienne nodded. ”Approved.”

Elena spoke up. ”The winter clothing is almost ready. But it won’t be very waterproof. A bad storm could soak through in minutes. You’ll need to wait for good weather.”

”We’ll wait,” Vivienne said. ”I’m not sending anyone into a storm.”

Isabelle Grant, at the back, was reviewing her tablet. ”The extra cold storage has been scrubbed clean. Between the main freezer and the new unit, we have room for two, maybe three elephant seals. I’m also planning to store some items on deck—the cold weather acts as a natural refrigerator. We can set up storage boxes near the helipad. Lots of unused space there.”

Vivienne approved. ”We approach the Falklands in three days. Scout first. If it’s safe, we hunt. If not, we find another site.”

The council dispersed. Victoria and Maggie left together, already discussing weapons. Linh returned to her navigation station. Kim limped toward the door, and Zhao caught up with her.

”The tanks,” he said. ”When can you meet?”

Kim checked her tablet. ”An hour. Maybe less. I need to finish something in the workshop first.”

”I’ll meet you on the aft deck.”

She nodded and limped away.

#Day 37 — 10:15

Zhao walked through the corridors of D-Deck, his tablet in his hand, the plans for the shellfish tanks still open on the screen. He had time—Kim wasn’t ready yet—and he needed a quiet place to think. The Willow was empty, but it was also where the family gathered. He wanted somewhere else. Somewhere still.

The old library was at the end of the corridor, its door heavy, dark wood. The council had sanctioned it for intimate activity weeks ago, but no one had ever used it. Zhao pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The room was dim. The windows let in gray light, and the synthetic fireplace in the corner cast a warm, flickering glow across the carpet. Books lined the walls—real books, hundreds of them, their spines faded, their pages untouched. A sofa faced the fireplace, and beyond it, a glass door led to a small balcony.

Zhao walked toward the balcony, his footsteps muffled by the carpet.

Then he stopped.

Someone was outside.

A figure sat on the balcony, wrapped in a blanket, staring down at the gray water. The wind whipped around them, pulling at the edges of the blanket, but they didn’t move. They just sat there, hunched, still.

Zhao moved closer. The light caught the side of the figure’s face.

Alexis.

Her electric blue eyes were fixed on the sea, and her expression—Zhao had seen that expression before. Depression. Loneliness. Hopelessness. The same look he had seen on his ex-girlfriend’s face, years ago, before she climbed onto the balcony railing.

No.

His blood went cold. He knew what Alexis was thinking. He had seen it before. The water below was six degrees—cold enough to kill in minutes. If she jumped, no one could save her. The ship was too large. The tenders would take too long to launch.

He should leave. He hated Alexis. She had almost taken advantage of Vivienne. She had torn the ship apart. She deserved whatever happened to her.

She deserves the cold sea if she wants it so badly.

He clenched his fists. His body was frozen, caught between the urge to turn away and the memory of his ex-girlfriend’s fall. The sound of her body hitting the pavement. The weeks in the hospital. The guilt that had followed him for years.

If I leave, I’m leaving a woman to die again.

He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t.

Alexis moved. She pushed the blanket off her shoulders, letting it fall to the deck. The wind caught it, lifted it, carried it over the railing and down toward the water.

Zhao didn’t think. He moved.

He crossed the room in three strides, yanked open the glass door, and grabbed Alexis around the waist. She gasped—surprised, not scared—and he pulled her back, dragged her inside, and slammed the door shut behind them.

He stood between her and the balcony, his chest heaving, his heart pounding.

Alexis stared at him. Her eyes were wet, but she wasn’t crying. Not yet.

Zhao’s sense returned. He looked at her, at the old t-shirt she wore, the thin underwear beneath. She was shivering. The blanket was gone, lost to the sea.

Now what?

He didn’t know. He couldn’t leave her here—she might try again. He couldn’t call security—they would lock her back in her cell, and she would be alone again. He didn’t know what to do, so he just stood there, blocking her path.

Then he saw something in her expression. Beneath the despair, beneath the cold, there was something else.

Wanting.

She wanted him to stay.

He thought of his ex-girlfriend again. The way she had looked at him, begging without words. The way he had turned away, chosen his corner, chosen silence over connection. He had left her, and she had jumped.

He would not make that mistake again.

He let out a breath. ”Are you alright?”

She didn’t answer.

”Do you want to talk about it?”

Still nothing. She walked past him—slowly, carefully, like a wounded animal—and sat on the sofa facing the fireplace. She stared into the flames, her hands in her lap.

Zhao looked around for something to cover her. There was nothing. Her blanket was gone, and the room had no extra coats, no spare fabric. He pulled off his old crew jacket—the one he had worn since the first day, faded and frayed—and draped it over her shoulders.

She flinched at the touch, then stilled. Her hands came up, held the jacket closed.

Zhao sat on the carpet across from her, his back to the fire. The warmth spread across his shoulders, but his face was cold.

He looked at her. Really looked.

She was beautiful. Even now, with tears on her cheeks and despair in her eyes, she was beautiful. But there was something else, too. Something he hadn’t seen before.

Fragility.

He remembered the night he had saved Vivienne from her. The date. The way Alexis had looked at him when he carried Vivienne away. There had been tears in her eyes then, too. He hadn’t understood why. She had been at the height of her power—every woman on the ship wanted her. Even Vivienne had been under her spell. Why would she cry?

Now he understood.

She was lonely.

All those women who had come to her, who had lost themselves in her body—they hadn’t seen her. They had seen what the Commission had made. A tool. A weapon. A thing to be consumed. They couldn’t talk to her. Couldn’t hold a conversation. Couldn’t see past the pheromones to the person underneath.

No one had ever seen her.

Except Zhao. He was immune. He could sit here, across from her, and not lose himself. He could look at her and see not a monster, but a woman.

Alexis’s voice cracked. ”Do you hate me?”

He was silent for a moment, trying to figure her out. Aida hadn’t told him much about Alexis. He hadn’t asked. He had seen what she did to Vivienne, what she did to the ship, and he had filed her away as a monster. Another product of the Commission. Another enemy.

But she wasn’t.

A monster would not try to kill herself. A monster would scheme, plan, fight. She had done none of that. She had simply wrapped herself in a blanket and stared at the cold sea, waiting for the courage to jump.

She’s not a monster. She’s just a lonely soul who doesn’t know how to reach out.

He thought of his ex again. He had called her a monster, too, after she jumped. Had blamed her for the trauma, for the guilt, for the years of nightmares. But she hadn’t been a monster. She had been a lost girl, and he had been a boy who didn’t know how to love.

They were young. They were supposed to explore, to make mistakes, to learn. He had learned the wrong lesson—that relationships were pain, that his corner was safer, that fantasy was better than reality.

Now he was here, with another lost girl, and he had a chance to do something different.

He shook his head. ”I don’t hate you.”

Alexis’s breath caught.

”Let the past be a lesson,” he said. ”But let’s move forward.”

He leaned forward, his elbows on his knees.

”I’ll be here to help. If you need to talk, you can find me. You don’t have to be alone.”

Something shifted in her face. The despair was still there, but beneath it, something else. Hope. Tentative, fragile, barely visible.

She opened her mouth. Closed it. Tried again.

”Thank you.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

”You might not know how much that means,” she said. ”To talk to someone like a normal person. Anyone else—” She gestured at herself, at the space between them. ”Anyone else would already be lost. But you’re not. You’re just... here.”

Zhao said nothing.

Alexis stood. She shrugged off his jacket—slowly, carefully—and held it out to him. He took it.

”Thank you,” she said again. ”For not letting me jump. For... staying.”

She walked toward the door. At the threshold, she stopped. She didn’t turn around, but her voice carried.

”Would you mind if we met again? Sometime?”

He nodded. ”I wouldn’t mind.”

She almost smiled. He saw it—the curve of her lips, quickly suppressed—and then she was gone, the door closing gently behind her.

Zhao sat on the carpet for a long time, the fire warming his back, his jacket in his lap.

He pulled on the jacket. It still held a trace of her warmth, her scent—something floral, something sad. He picked up his tablet, looked at the plans for the shellfish tanks, and tried to focus.

What did I just do?

He had saved a woman he hated. He had offered her his time, his attention, his presence. He had opened a door that he might not be able to close.

Did I wake a monster again?

He thought of her face. The almost-smile. The way she had said thank you, like it was the first time anyone had ever meant it.

Or did I just save a lonely girl? A girl who will need me now, more than ever.

He looked out the window at the stormy sea. The ship rolled gently beneath him, carrying them south, toward the Falklands, toward the hunt, toward whatever came next.

He didn’t know what he had done. He didn’t know if it would save the ship or doom it. But he knew one thing.

A lonely, tortured soul has been saved. And she may not be lonely in the future.

That was worth something.

He stood, tucked his tablet under his arm, and walked toward the door.

The Willow was waiting. The family was waiting. And somewhere on this ship, Alexis was walking back to her cabin, her steps maybe a little lighter, her heart maybe a little warmer.

Zhao stepped into the corridor and walked toward the aft deck.

Kim was waiting. The tanks needed building.

But for the first time since the world ended, he felt like he had done something that mattered. Not because it was ordered. Not because it was necessary. But because it was right.
