Chapter 177: Chapter 128: Corpse Demon

Something’s wrong!

Su Mu and Luo Anning exchanged a look, each seeing the shock and surprise in the other’s eyes.

”Go!”

With a grim expression, Su Mu shot forward.

’On the way here, I’d considered all sorts of possibilities, including Feng Zhengqian and Hu Guangshao trying to set a trap for me.’

’I wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised if Feng Zhengqian had made me face danger alone, or even if he’d tried to kill me himself.’

’But I never imagined a situation like this.’

’No matter how you looked at it, Hu Guangshao had no motive to harm Feng Zhengqian.’

’If there was anyone Hu Guangshao hated most, it was definitely me.’

’Given the chance, I’m sure Hu Guangshao would kill me without a second thought.’

’But Feng Zhengqian... he was the very person Hu Guangshao had been fawning over this whole trip.’

Hu Guangshao had abandoned the Taiping Bureau to join the Shennong Hundred Herbs Sect. If he wanted to climb the sect’s ranks, getting on Feng Zhengqian’s good side was a must.

And that was exactly what he had been doing. The so-called great young master of the Hu Family, one of the four great families of Wuling City’s Inner City, had acted like a toady the entire way, waiting on Feng Zhengqian hand and foot.

’That’s why when Hu Guangshao said he knew where to find the Profound Pearl Grass, my first thought was that he wanted to use the opportunity to get rid of me.’

’I’ve been on guard against it this whole time.’

’But I never expected that once we got here, Hu Guangshao wouldn’t make me scout the path. Instead, he chose to clear the way himself and led Feng Zhengqian directly into the mountain cave.’

’Could it be that Hu Guangshao genuinely thought the cave was safe, and an accident occurred?’

Puzzled, Su Mu had already darted into the mountain cave.

Plunging from the bright outdoors into the pitch-black cave, Su Mu was blinded for a moment.

SWISH!

The Thunder Shocking Saber flew from its sheath, transforming into a dense web of blade light that formed a watertight defense in front of him.

Once his vision adjusted to the cave’s darkness and he confirmed there were no enemies before him, Su Mu relaxed his stance.

At that moment, Luo Anning reached his side.

”Where are they?”

Luo Anning asked in a grim voice.

Su Mu shook his head.

A fork appeared in the path before them.

On the left and right, a pitch-black tunnel stretched into the unknown.

Just as the two were hesitating over which path to choose, another scream suddenly echoed from the right-hand tunnel.

Without hesitation, the pair charged into the right-hand tunnel.

Neither of them ever considered splitting up.

With the situation unknown, splitting up rashly would only give the enemy a chance to divide and conquer.

The two advanced warily. The cave grew darker and darker until finally the last sliver of light vanished, and it became so dark they couldn’t see their hands in front of their faces.

PUFF.

Luo Anning took out her flint and steel and gently blew a small flame to life.

The flickering flame tore a gash in the curtain of blackness, barely illuminating an area a few steps around them.

Su Mu had not sheathed his Thunder Shocking Saber, keeping it in his hand, ready to strike at any moment.

Luo Anning held the flint and steel in one hand, her other already resting on the hilt of the longsword at her waist as she scanned her surroundings with intense focus.

”Over here!”

Su Mu whispered, taking two steps forward.

Luo Anning followed closely, and the firelight illuminated a corpse lying on the ground.

The corpse was fresh, its body covered in the marks of a wild beast’s mauling. Its eyes, wide open in death, were still filled with terror.

”A Corpse Demon... These wounds are from a Corpse Demon!”

Luo Anning whispered, her face growing a little pale.

The words had barely left her lips when a beastly roar erupted from the darkness ahead. A fierce gust of wind rushed toward their faces, blowing out the flame in Luo Anning’s hand.

Without the slightest hesitation, Su Mu’s Thunder Shocking Saber became a streak of white light as he slashed out.

CLANG!

The blade struck something, letting out a deafening ring of metal on metal.

Su Mu was slightly stunned by the force of the impact that reverberated up his arms.

With a cold snort, Su Mu changed his saber technique. He unleashed his Kan Water Realm, which transformed into chains of water that, guided by sound, wrapped tightly around his opponent.

At that moment, Luo Anning relit the flame, dispelling a little of the thick darkness.

Only then did Su Mu get a clear look at his opponent: a tall, humanoid creature covered in black fur, with crimson eyes.

The Thunder Shocking Saber had struck its body, sending black fur flying. Vile, stinking blood flowed out, but the wound was surprisingly shallow.

Though Su Mu hadn’t used his full strength, he had infused the attack with his Realm. Even a casual strike like that should have been able to slice through steel with ease.

’This Corpse Demon’s body is harder than steel!’

Su Mu knew the dangers of this cave were still unknown; a prolonged fight was not wise.

A sharp glint appeared in his eyes. The thousands of drops of Profound Yellow Blood inside him began to roil like a surging tide.

HUMMM. The Thunder Shocking Saber lashed out, leaving a phantom image of the blade in its wake.

The blade-light flashed like silk, splitting the air with a sonic BOOM.

SHLICK...

In that instant, the blade-light sliced through the Corpse Demon’s neck.

The Corpse Demon, which had been lunging forward with a frenzied howl, froze in place.

Its shaggy, black-furred head rolled off its neck. Vile, dark blood gushed out, releasing a nauseating stench.

Seeing this, Luo Anning, who had taken a step forward, quietly pulled it back.

She had been about to help.

’Who would have thought that in just that short time, Su Mu would have already beheaded the Corpse Demon?’

’He seems so much stronger than when we faced the assassin from Golden Wind Tower.’

’We’re both at the eighth level of blood-exchange, so why does he feel so much stronger than me?’

’Is it because of his Physical Divine Techniques?’
