Chapter 163: Chapter 121: Storming the Hu Mansion

”It’s a shame we couldn’t keep one alive,” Su Mu said. ”Otherwise, I would’ve liked to ask who hired the Golden Wind Tower to assassinate me.”

”Even if we had, it would’ve been useless,” Luo Anning said. ”The people from the Golden Wind Tower would never reveal their client’s identity.”

’Golden Wind Tower wouldn’t?’

Su Mu thought otherwise.

”The client is the Hu Family.”

Su Mu said matter-of-factly.

”The Hu Family?”

Luo Anning gave Su Mu a surprised look. ”Are you sure? I have no grudge against the Hu Family. Why would they hire the Golden Wind Tower to assassinate me?”

”I’m sure. As for why, we’ll just have to ask the Hu Family.”

Su Mu said with a shrug.

”Alright, then let’s go ask them.”

Luo Anning declared, striding forward with murderous intent.

’She’s really going to ask?’

Su Mu stared, dumbfounded, at Luo Anning’s retreating back. This was the first time he’d seen such a decisive side to her. ’She said she was going to ask, and she’s really going?’

”What are you standing there for? Didn’t the Hu Family also have the Golden Wind Tower try to assassinate you? Aren’t you coming with me?”

After taking a couple of steps, Luo Anning noticed Su Mu hadn’t followed and turned back to call out.

”Coming. Of course I am.”

Su Mu chuckled in spite of himself.

’A face-to-face interrogation, going for the jugular right away. I like it.’

...

Sometimes, you just had to admit that people were different.

Even though they both wore the uniform of the Taiping Bureau White Clothes, and Su Mu even held the additional title of East City Bureau Captain...

...he knew he could never have gotten the Inner City gates to open an hour early.

Yet all Luo Anning had to do was shout once at the gates of the Inner City.

A full hour before they were scheduled to, the gates to the Inner City swung open.

The City Defense Army asked a few perfunctory questions and let the two of them into the Inner City.

”I don’t normally do this.”

Noticing Su Mu’s expression, Luo Anning explained, ”But this time, I needed to enter the city openly and aboveboard. So I decided to be a little indulgent, just this once.”

Su Mu nodded in understanding.

If the two of them had snuck into the city and gone to the Hu Mansion to confront them, there was no guaranteeing how the Hu Family would react.

If the Hu Family were ruthless enough, they could kill them both and then simply deny ever having seen them.

But now that they had made such a public entrance, witnessed by so many members of the City Defense Army, the Hu Family wouldn’t dare to act, even if they wanted to.

Su Mu was one thing, but Luo Anning was the daughter of the City Lord.

One walking behind the other, they went straight to the gates of the Hu Mansion.

It wasn’t Su Mu’s first time here, but it was his first time standing before the main gate.

Just as Su Mu was wondering how Luo Anning planned to have the large doors opened, he saw her take two steps forward, draw her longsword, and with two sharp slashes...

The two heavy doors were smashed to splinters.

Miss Luo strode in, head held high.

Su Mu chuckled in spite of himself. Miss Luo’s usual low-key demeanor had nearly made him forget: she was a top scion in Wuling City and a member of a privileged organization. She had absolutely nothing to fear.

Her usual lack of airs spoke to her good upbringing, but it didn’t mean she would tolerate being bullied.

”Miss Luo, what is the meaning of this?”

The loud commotion had already alerted everyone in the Hu family.

As Su Mu stepped over the threshold, he saw Hu Gongxiu, who had hurried over, blocking Luo Anning’s path in the middle of the courtyard.

”I’m the one who should be asking what the Hu Family thinks it’s doing!”

Facing Hu Gongxiu and the members of the Hu Family, Luo Anning was completely unafraid. Her voice was icy as she spoke, ”I have no prior grievance with your Hu Family. You hired assassins from the Golden Wind Tower to kill me. Don’t you owe me an explanation?”

”Miss Luo, where could you have possibly heard such a rumor? It’s a misunderstanding, a complete misunderstanding!”

Hu Gongxiu’s face was livid. ”The Hu Family and the Luo Family have always been on good terms,” he said. ”How could I possibly have dealings with a place like the Golden Wind Tower?

Let alone hire someone to have you assassinated.

I believe someone is maliciously slandering my Hu family and trying to sow discord between our two houses!”

Hu Gongxiu’s gaze shifted to Su Mu, who stood behind Luo Anning, and his look was sharp enough to kill—as if he wanted to slice the man into a thousand pieces.

”Has Miss Luo, perhaps, been listening to a scoundrel’s slander?”

Hu Gongxiu said, staring at Su Mu.

’Talk if you’re going to talk. What’s with the staring? When you say ’scoundrel,’ are you referring to me?’

Su Mu cradled the Thunder Shocking Saber and rolled his eyes at Hu Gongxiu.

When Hu Gongxiu saw the Thunder Shocking Saber in Su Mu’s hands, he nearly choked on his own rage.

’That was the treasured saber his Hu Family had cherished for many years!’

’You bastard! Bringing my family’s own saber to my front door... This isn’t just killing me, it’s twisting the knife!’

”Why are you looking at him? He’s a victim too!”

Luo Anning sidestepped, blocking Hu Gongxiu’s line of sight and shielding Su Mu behind her. ”You know exactly what’s going on.

Today, we both nearly died at the hands of assassins from the Golden Wind Tower. If you don’t give me a satisfactory explanation, then don’t blame me for raising hell here.”

Her right hand went to the hilt of her sword, and she bristled with killing intent.

Hu Gongxiu’s expression was as dark as a stormy sea. ”My dear girl,” he said coldly, ”do you think the Hu Family is so weak that we can’t even handle a single warrior of the Blood Transformation Realm?”

”It’s not about what I think. I only know that when you do wrong, you must pay the price.”

Luo Anning said.

”I practice the sword for the moments when people refuse to listen to reason. Then, my blade can teach them this lesson.

Hu Gongxiu, would you like to test my blade?”

Hu Gongxiu’s expression changed.

Never mind that Luo Anning had just broken through to the Blood Transformation Realm; even if she had reached Blood Transformation Perfection, the Hu Family was more than capable of dealing with her.

But in the current situation, if the Hu Family made a move, the matter would escalate beyond their control.

Hiring assassins to kill the eldest daughter of the Luo Family... no matter how you spun it, the Hu Family had no ground to stand on.

If the Luo Family seized this opportunity, they might even unite with the other two great families to wipe out the Hu Family entirely.
