CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

Caius stood in the center of the training yard, his gaze fixed on the enormous Arachne warrior thrashing violently inside its reinforced iron cage. Its many limbs struck the bars repeatedly, sending heavy metallic crashes echoing through the chamber. Mandibles clicked with murderous intent as it stared directly at him, clearly wanting nothing more than to tear the human apart.

Caius regarded it with absolute calm.

He had already studied the Arachne princess within his Crown Core. He understood her thread techniques, her constructs, and the way she manipulated her energy. What he had not yet grasped was how she had connected herself so seamlessly to other Arachne warriors.

The answer, he suspected, was locked inside the creature before him.

”All right,” Caius murmured. ”Let’s try this.”

His Crown Core awakened. Dark energy gathered around his hand, condensing into a narrow black blade. A thin strand of that same energy remained tethered to the weapon, stretching back toward his core like an extension of his own consciousness.

The Arachne slammed against the cage once more, but Caius ignored the commotion, activating Inner Sight.

The world shifted. The Arachne’s body dissolved into a complex network of mana pathways. Vibrant green energy pulsed through its limbs and organs, originating from the monster core buried deep within its torso. Mana flowed outward through its muscles before circulating back through its internal channels.

Caius tracked the flow meticulously. He wasn’t searching for the monster core; he was looking for something far more subtle.

There. Near the creature’s head, he spotted a peculiar concentration in the flow.

It was not a second core. There was no Crown Core within the beast. Instead, the energy pathways converged upon a single nexus, creating a specialized bridge between the creature’s physical form and its consciousness.

The Crown Point.

Caius had observed a similar phenomenon in the Arachne princess when she commanded her thread constructs. Now he realized that this nexus existed independently of a Crown Core itself. It was an access point—the monster core supplied raw power, while the Crown Point maintained the tether to the creature’s mind and instincts.

He watched the circulation several times, memorizing the pattern as green energy rose from the monster core, traversed the internal pathways, and reached the Crown Point. From there, something deeper anchored into the void.

Caius narrowed his eyes. ”If I can reach that...”

He slowly raised the black blade. The Arachne continued to batter the cage, completely oblivious to his intent.

Caius targeted the Crown Point. He had no desire to destroy it; he wanted to pierce it.

The black blade struck.

The instant the construct bit into the Crown Point, Caius’s consciousness was violently dragged forward. A torrent of foreign sensory information flooded his mind.

He saw darkness. Then, an egg.

The memory was not his own. He witnessed the Arachne hatch from its shell, its fragile body crawling into the world for the first time. He felt the raw confusion of its earliest moments, followed by an immediate, ravenous hunger and the overwhelming urge to survive.

The memories accelerated. He saw it hunting. He felt the phantom sensation of eight legs skittering across subterranean stone and silk spreading through pitch-black tunnels. He experienced its first kill, then another, and another. Visions flashed of unfamiliar beasts—some massive enough to crush the Arachne underfoot.

The creature had survived. It had hunted. It had grown.

Then came a shift: a dark elf.

The memory detailed the Arachne ambushing the warrior in a narrow cavern. The dark elf fought desperately, but the beast overwhelmed him. Caius felt the horrific sensation of tearing flesh, the metallic taste of blood, and the visceral satisfaction of the kill.

More memories surged—other prey, other hunts, other desperate battles.

Caius attempted to catalog it all, but the sheer volume threatened to drown his senses. Then, the flow abruptly shifted. The memories began to dissolve, as though an invisible barrier had been erected between him and the deeper recesses of the creature’s mind. The individual visions faded one by one until only core fragments remained.

What survived was not history; it was pure, unadulterated instinct.

Hunt. Kill. Survive.

Caius’s consciousness was violently thrown backward. He snapped his eyes open in the real world. The black blade had vanished.

For several seconds, he remained entirely motionless. Then, his eyes widened.

”Success.”

His theory was correct. The Crown Point could be breached. He had entered the Arachne’s mind without possessing its body, confirming that the memories anchored to a living creature could be accessed through that single nexus.

The connection stabilized, but a far more radical concept was already crystallizing in his mind.

He looked down at his palm, feeling the residual hum of his Crown Core reacting to the creature’s tethered mind.

”If I can pierce the Crown Point and map its neural pathways,” Caius murmured, his voice laced with cold curiosity, ”then the Crown Core isn’t just a domain for refined spirits. It can act as a dimensional anchor.”

His gaze shifted toward the now-docile Arachne resting in the corner of the cage.

The objective was no longer just projecting shadow constructs outward into the world. He wanted to test the reverse. If he could pull this living, flesh-and-blood body inside his Crown Core space, he would master the bridge between material flesh and core consciousness. Once perfected, he could project the Flame Demon and the Arachne Princess outward—manifesting their true essences into physical shadow vessels to fight alongside him. This live monster was simply the proving ground to forge his vanguard.

A sudden wave of exhaustion hit him. His body felt unnaturally heavy.

The energy required to pierce the Crown Point had been immense. His Crown Core had consumed a vast amount of power to establish the tether, leaving his mind drained.

Closing his eyes, he turned his focus inward to examine his Crown Core. Something was different. The internal space felt larger, denser, with far more expanse than before.

Had the strain forced his Crown Core to expand, or had establishing the connection permanently altered its capacity? The answer would have to wait.

Caius turned to the cage. The Arachne had stopped thrashing. It simply stared at him, its mandibles still, its many limbs resting motionless against the iron.

He stepped forward and unlatched the heavy gate. It swung open with a creak, but the beast didn’t lunge.

”Come out,” Caius commanded.

The creature obeyed, slowly stepping through the doorway and coming to a halt before him.

”Go to the corner and rest.”

The Arachne turned, skittered toward the far side of the training yard, and settled its massive body against the stone floor.

Caius watched it before reaching into his storage ring to retrieve two monster cores—one of them an Arachne core he had set aside earlier. He held them out toward the beast.

”Eat.”

The Arachne rose immediately, approached Caius, took the cores, and began consuming them greedily.

Outside the chamber, the guards stationed at the doorway watched with growing bewilderment. The beast that had been violently trying to dismantle its cage moments ago was now sitting peacefully, crunching on monster cores like a trained hound.

One guard exchanged a nervous glance with his companion. ”What happened?”

”I don’t know.”

”Did the human break it?”

The second guard stared at Caius, who had already sat cross-legged in the center of the yard. ”I don’t think so.”

They watched in baffled silence. There was no sign of a struggle, no blood, and no corpse. Caius simply closed his eyes and began to meditate.

Unable to make sense of the scene, one of the guards turned and hurried down the corridor to report to his superior.

Old Bones was resting in his quarters when the young warrior burst in, bowing hurriedly. ”Elder!”

Old Bones opened a single eye. ”What is it?”

”The Arachne...”

The old assassin sat upright instantly. ”What about it? Did it break loose?”

”It... it became quiet.”

Old Bones frowned deeply. ”Quiet?”

”Yes, Elder. It stopped attacking entirely.”

”Where is Caius?”

”In the training yard.”

”Is he alive?”

The guard hesitated, shifting his weight. ”We... aren’t entirely sure.”

Old Bones’s face darkened. ”I told that reckless boy to be careful.” He rose in a flash. ”Take me there.”

The guard led him through the stone corridors. As they approached the private yard, Old Bones prepared himself for the worst. He had seen Caius push his limits before; the boy’s relentless curiosity often overshadowed his sense of caution, and bringing a live monster into the estate was asking for disaster.

He expected blood. He expected a slaughtered beast, or a gravely wounded boy.

Instead, when he stepped through the threshold, he froze dead in his tracks.

The massive Arachne warrior was lying peacefully in the corner, calmly crunching on monster cores. In the center of the yard, Caius sat cross-legged with his eyes closed, completely immersed in deep meditation.

There was no blood. No carnage. No sign that a life-or-death struggle had ever taken place.

Old Bones’s mouth hung open. For several long seconds, the legendary assassin could only stare at the surreal scene.

”What in the nine hells...” he whispered.

The Arachne kept eating, Caius kept meditating, and Old Bones remained frozen at the entrance, realizing that whatever the boy had done this time, he had once again shattered any rational expectation the old assassin had left.
