[You have slain the Beach Sand Worm]

[You have obtained: Wax Oil x2]

Luo Ge pulled his Broken Sword from the monster’s flesh and let out a soft sigh of relief.

He was currently on a desolate island shrouded in darkness.

Of course, if it were just an ordinary island, he might have even felt fortunate.

But unfortunately, this island was teeming with monsters.

And what made Luo Ge despair even more... was the environment.

The familiar sun was gone. Its daily rise and fall, the sunset over the ocean—all had become an extravagant hope. The sun’s warmth now existed only in Luo Ge’s memory.

Darkness saturated every corner of the island, and the boundless ocean had trapped him here completely. Only a faint, residual glow provided a hazy view...

It was, without a doubt, a desperate situation.

But Luo Ge was not entirely without hope...

He glanced down at the wound on his abdomen.

The wound, which should have been a gory mess of flowing blood, now looked like a slash in a candle. All that remained was a white indentation from which pale yellow Wax Oil slowly seeped.

After collecting his spoils, Luo Ge returned to his shelter.

It was a Reef Cave, just barely able to block most of the sea wind.

He walked over to a rock, squatted down, and held out his hand. A pure white candle with a burning flame appeared in his palm.

After placing it on the rock, Luo Ge leaned against the cave wall and sat down, letting out a soft breath.

[Spirit Candle]

[Tier: Residual Ash]

[Remaining Wax Oil: 103]

[Spirit Candle Building: Spirit Fire Port (Not built, requires Anchor Island)]

[Anchored Island: None (Requires 300 Wax Oil)]

[Candle Spirits Summoned: 0 (Requires 100 Wax Oil)]

[Spirit Fire Port: A port burning with Spirit Fire, granting your Candle Spirits the ability to operate in coastal waters.]

[Anchor Island: Use the Spirit Candle to anchor the island, stabilizing its environment.]

The only reason Luo Ge had survived this long on an island so devoid of resources and fraught with danger was this candle.

The Spirit Candle, to be precise.

It had granted Luo Ge a body forged from Wax Oil, allowing him to recover quickly from injuries and even... come back to life.

But all of this required a basic resource called ”Wax Oil.” Even constructing magical buildings required large amounts of it.

And ”Wax Oil” could only be obtained by killing those crazed monsters.

An unknown amount of time had passed. By relying on the residual power of the Spirit Candle itself, through countless cycles of recovery and even death, Luo Ge had finally mastered the art of combat.

Luo Ge didn’t know what would happen if he died after his Wax Oil ran out, and he had no intention of finding out. It surely wouldn’t be anything good.

After hunt after hunt, his once nearly-depleted supply of Wax Oil finally began to slowly accumulate again.

Perhaps the only good news was that the crazed monsters respawned endlessly, like weeds!

But this just gave Luo Ge an even bigger headache.

Just what kind of absurd, bizarre world was this?

”A Candle Spirit should be able to help me find the answers faster...”

Luo Ge took a deep breath.

Summoning a Candle Spirit was one of the Spirit Candle’s functions.

Based on the information provided by the Spirit Candle, Luo Ge figured they were probably something like puppets with simple consciousness.

Once he had accumulated enough Wax Oil, Luo Ge could use the Spirit Candle to create a wax body to house a Candle Spirit.

They possessed traits similar to his own and should be able to help him with quite a few tasks.

’I hope this so-called Candle Spirit is at least a little bit smart...’ Luo Ge thought to himself.

If he summoned a bunch of idiots, his one hundred Wax Oil would be wasted.

’I’ll just summon one to test the waters...’

Luo Ge sighed softly, then reached his hand toward the Spirit Candle’s flame...

[100 Wax Oil consumed. Summoning Candle Spirit...]

...

[A dead, silent darkness pervades every corner of the world...]

[The frigid ocean imprisons life on lonely islands...]

[Agonized wails ride on the biting sea wind...]

[Oh, Firelight from a distant land...]

[Accept the Candle Spirit Body, and become a pioneer in the exploration of darkness...]

”Not a bad cutscene. Not very artistic, but the realism is top-notch...”

Li Miao stroked his chin, critiquing the scene he had just watched.

As a veteran gamer, he had purchased a Link device the moment virtual reality gaming technology became available.

In the game store, he had discovered a game called ”Spirit Candle,” and the mention of ”combat” elements in the description piqued his interest.

[Please enter your name]

[Please adjust your physical appearance]

[Note: Your physical appearance will affect your character’s combat performance. Please adjust carefully!]

After the cutscene ended, Li Miao found himself in the character creation interface, surrounded by darkness.

”Can’t play as a female character?” Li Miao shook his head, a little disappointed. ”Still, having physical traits affect combat... that makes sense.”

After setting his name to ”Brother Miao Won’t Fail the Exam,” he began adjusting his physical appearance.

”Make the face a bit more handsome, the muscles a bit bigger...”

”No, no, not the traps...”

After some tinkering, Li Miao finally nodded in satisfaction and touched the [Confirm] button.

The darkness before him began to swirl.

A pulling sensation washed over him, and Li Miao’s vision went completely black...

...

”Huh?”

”Wait, this... isn’t this a player?”

Luo Ge, who had witnessed the entire process through the power of the Spirit Candle, was dumbfounded.

He had watched Li Miao go through the full character creation process in the preparation space.

And as it happened, he could feel the Spirit Candle shaping a Candle Spirit in accordance with Li Miao’s actions.

Without a doubt, this player, Li Miao, was about to descend upon the newly born Candle Spirit Body.

Now *this* was interesting!

As everyone knows, ”players” possess incredible creativity, fearsome aggression, and an unpredictable nature. They are fearless in the face of death when pursuing their goals.

They also have a title that strikes fear into the hearts of all natives in a game world...

The Fourth Calamity!

If he could get a group like that to work for him...

”Then I would have a powerful vanguard to explore this world!”

Luo Ge’s heart pounded with excitement.

He quickly began to consider the feasibility of this plan.

’I need to think about how to guide him...’

Luo Ge’s mind raced as he schemed.

...

「A moment later...」

”DRIP...”

The faint sound of water dripping on rock came from behind.

”Welcome, Firelight from a distant land...”

A slightly deep male voice spoke.

Li Miao opened his eyes and saw a world-weary man holding a Broken Sword, leaning against the stone wall.

He was staring intently at the Candlefire, not looking directly at him.

[Listen to the Candlekeeper’s guidance]

At that moment, a quest prompt appeared in the upper right corner of Li Miao’s vision.

He tried to stand up and move, but found his body was unresponsive. He could only remain seated cross-legged.

’Movement is restricted for now? All right...’

Although he was eager to move freely and experience the fun of virtual reality, Li Miao wasn’t in a rush, so he began to listen patiently.

’Good thing I was prepared...’ Luo Ge thought.

As a former gamer himself, he knew players quite well.

If you didn’t place some restrictions in the starting area, there was no telling what kind of trouble these players would get into...

Despite these thoughts, Luo Ge’s expression remained calm as he fulfilled his duty as an ”NPC.”

”You can call me the Candlekeeper...”

”As you can see, my duty is to guard the Spirit Candle.”

”And you, as a Candle Spirit born from the Spirit Candle, your purpose is to bring its light and warmth to this dark world...”

”But for now, your firelight is still very weak.”

”To grow stronger, you must kill the monsters that have fallen into madness and acquire the Wax Oil they leave behind after death.”

”The Spirit Candle will store the Wax Oil you acquire, healing your wounds or reshaping your body after you die...”

After saying this, Luo Ge focused his thoughts and used the Spirit Candle’s power to update the guidance information.

[Use your intent to view your personal information]

Seeing this, Li Miao focused his intent and eagerly opened his personal information panel.

[Brother Miao Won’t Fail the Exam]

[Tier: Residual Ash]

[Level: 1]

[Ability Values: (View Details)]

[Talent: Strong and Healthy]

[Skill: Dodge]

Each entry was accompanied by a detailed explanation, which Li Miao eagerly began to read.

[Residual Ash: Not even complete ashes, just a leftover scrap from the world’s creation.]

[Strong and Healthy: Slightly increases Physical Strength recovery speed, Constitution +1.]

[Dodge: A Blessing from the Spirit Candle. When you are Rolling, Jumping, or crawling, you have a 50% chance to become immune to the next instance of damage received.]
