THE SYSTEM IS NOT MINE

Chapter 1: The Clinic Was Too Narrow

The clinic was too narrow for death.

It was a structure built of architectural scars from the Fever Year, when coughs carried children away in clusters and incense burned until the ceiling beams turned smoke-black. A brittle reed charm hung above the doorway, a skeletal hand meant to catch wandering things and keep them outside.

Nothing had wandered in.

The predator was already at the table.

Shui lay beneath the guttering oil lamp. Pale field soil clung to his sleeve, stubborn and mute. One shoe hung half-loosened, the laces dark with the road dust he hadn’t finished treading.

Yan’s hands had not been unclenched since he set the body down.

The doctor pressed two fingers to the hollow of Shui’s throat and waited.

In South Reed Village, death usually arrived with a polite, lingering cruelty. It announced itself through fevers, bargains, and bitter decoctions swallowed at midnight. This one had come without the grace of a warning. It had arrived with the suddenness of a snapped string.

The doctor withdrew his hand.

”I am sorry”

He paused for a second.

”Nothing I can do. He’s gone.”

The words did not echo. They settled into the floorboards like lead.

For a brief, unreasonable moment, Yan was certain that if he tried to speak, his voice would not belong to him.

Outside, a mule passed toward the northern trade road. Hooves struck stone in a steady, indifferent rhythm. Grain would move tomorrow. Silver would change hands. Beyond the jagged silhouette of the hills, the sect Caravans would continue their predatory circuits, searching for children who might glow beneath the touch of crystal.

The world did not shift for a farmer’s grief.

Taner’s fingers tightened around his sleeve, her small frame trembling. ”Gege? What’s wrong with him?”

Yan did not answer. He was staring at a single grain of silt caught in Shui’s eyelashes. The land here was fine and pale; the elders said the soil remembered every step.

Shit. The thought was a jagged spark. Then, a cold, white light drowned it out.

Primary Host: Shui

Vital Signs: Terminated

The letters were a searing, clinical white. They weren’t carved into the air or projected on the wall. They were in the air, at the centre of his eye balls.

”Yan.” The doctor’s voice cut in. ”Are you okay? What are you staring at? ”

He paused and observed Yan for a second.

This tale has been pilfered from NovelFire. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

”I know it must be shocking, but remember your parents, they still need you” Doctor reassured.

Yan didn’t answer, his eyes were still on the letters.

Three Hours Earlier

The irrigation trench had surrendered again.

Water pressed against the wooden board Yan had set the week before. If it gave way, the lower rows would drown before market day. Medicine required silver. Silver required grain. Grain required a harvest that arrived before the caravan bell.

His father had coughed blood that morning. Not enough to kill, but enough to cost.

Behind him, Taner sat in the dirt braiding reeds into uneven loops, her laughter a bright, fragile sound against the heat. The shrine stone nearby still held the grey ash of an offering made to the god of souls that wasn’t listening.

Footsteps approached. Shui’s shadow crossed the rows before his voice did.

”Yan, You are skipping lessons again.” A tired smile in his voice. ”Teacher Chen asked about you.”

”Teacher Chen can come fix my ditch, then.” Yan replied.

Shui has always been more intelligent and very good at studies. The teachers spoke of examinations beyond the river basin, of futures that did not involve the permanent stain of mud beneath the nails.

But Shui wasn’t looking at the trench. He was looking at the house. At the ribbon of smoke from the chimney. At the way Taner played.

”Do you know something?” Shui said. The words weren’t sharp. They were hollow, weighted with a fatigue that didn’t belong to a boy of sixteen. ”You don’t know how good you have it.”

”Good? I’m standing in mud up to my ankles. You call that good?”

Yan contradicted.

”At least you eat dinner with people who want you to be there,” Shui replied.

The words sat between them. Yan did not know how to answer that. He pretended to adjust the board.

Shui stepped onto the soft bank. The soil near the irrigation edge looked firm, but it was treachery disguised as ground.

”Watch your step,” Yan warned. ”That side’s soft.”

Shui crouched and pulled a young stalk free. The roots tore with a quiet, sickening finality.

”Hey! what are you doing? Leave that alone!” Yan snapped.

Shui froze. Not a flinch. An arrest.

Something clicked in his eyes, Shui blinked and he looked around like a mad man.

Target Soul: Confirmed.

Primary Host Binding: Initiated.

Shui heard a Mechanical voice and white letters appeared infront of his eyes.

Air returned to the lungs too violently. His expression twisted. He looked at his own hands like they belonged to someone else.

”This isn’t” he grasped. His hands turned over, fingers splaying. ”No. This isn’t right.”

Yan grabbed his sleeve, his face flushed with mundane anger. ”What’s the matter with you? Quit acting strange!”

Shui looked at him without a shred of recognition.

Right at the moment, the soil beneath him slipped, his eyes were on the sky.

A silhouette appeared in front of him.

Their fingers locked for the smallest fraction of a heartbeat, pulse to pulse, heat to heat before gravity resolved what the intrusion had begun.

”Not yet,” Shui said. ”I’m not done yet.” The words were measured, clear, and utterly alien.

Skull met packed earth with a dull thud that did not belong to the afternoon.

The irrigation water continued to move. Taner’s laughter stopped.

Yan knelt and picked him up, the blood from his head flowed to the irrigation trench.

Ignoring everything, Yan lifted him and ran.

Halfway to the village, Old Cia stepped forward, a ghost of debts past. ”Yan, stop right there” and stood in front of them.

He looked at Shui’s limp body, then back at Yan. ”Your family still owes me grain. Three sacks. I’ve been patient.”

”Not now,” Yan wheezed. ”He fell and hit his head. I need to go to the doctor.”

”Fell. That’s what you said when your fence took out my post.”Cias eyes narrowed. ”Funny how things keep falling around you.”

The truth carried no more weight than the deception. Shui struggled to breath, blood from his head slid down to Yan’s sleeve. Cia saw the red blood, saw the grey cast of the boy’s skin, and stepped aside.

Back in the clinic, the doctor covered Shui’s face. The soil on his lashes did not disappear; it merely moved into the shadow of the cloth.

Outside, the mule’s hooves faded into the distance.

0.8 meters. The distance between his heart and the dead boy on the table. For an instant, the world felt like a thin veil stretched over a vast, unfeeling machine.

The white letters brightened in front of his eyes.

Initiating Forced Integration...

The soil remembered every step. And now, something else remembered Yan.
