The Sinful Young Master

Chapter 439: Mission impossible

But as Jolthar thought about it, something else occurred to him.

The Emperor could have simply condemned him to death. Could have had him executed on the spot with minimal justification, given the assembled evidence and accusations. Instead, he was offering this—an impossible task, yes, but still technically an opportunity rather than outright execution.

That suggested the Emperor wasnʼt simply trying to kill him. He was testing him, evaluating him, possibly even creating a situation where if Jolthar somehow succeeded, he would return with proven capabilities that would make him even more valuable to the empire.

It was a gamble on both sides.

The Emperor was gambling that either Jolthar would die solving a problem in the Dreadland Depths or return stronger and potentially loyal.

Jolthar gambled that his power, skill, and determination would be enough to overcome seemingly impossible odds.

A slow smile crossed Joltharʼs face. It was not arrogance exactly, but confidence born of having faced impossible situations before and survived them.

For the first time since entering the imperial hall, Jolthar clasped his hands together and bowed slightly to the Emperor—a gesture of genuine respect rather than the mandatory deference everyone else had shown.

”Your Imperial Majesty,” Jolthar said clearly, his voice carrying across the hall, ”I accept your task. I will venture into the Dreadland Depths; I will hunt these dukes, and I will return with their heads. And when I do, I will hold you to your word.

The Emperorʼs smile widened, showing genuine pleasure at the acceptance. He wasnʼt bothered with the way he accepted his task. Though the ministers and his wife thought differently.

”Excellent. I expected nothing less from someone bold enough to transform into a dragon in the middle of my capital.”

He gestured broadly, his voice carrying imperial authority.

”Let it be recorded in the official chronicles. Upon successful completion, he will receive full pardon for all accused crimes, elevation to the rank of count, and official imperial recognition of his governance of Tekkora and any additional territories granted through this elevation.”

The Emperorʼs expression became more serious. ”Fail or refuse to attempt the mission, and the accusations against you stand with full force. Is this understanding clear to all present?”

”Yes, Your Imperial Majesty,” came the response from dozens of voices throughout the hall.

”Then it is decided and final,” the Emperor declared.

”Kaezhlar, you have one month to complete this task. Return within that time with the three heads, or you shall have it all.”

There was a murmur throughout the hall again. One month to go into the depths and kill not one but three dukes; they didnʼt understand if the emperor was showing favor to Jolthar or trying to get him killed.

Moving through the dreadlands was not easy task even for the most powerful people and top of that, he has to find three of them. As they were dukes, they wouldnʼt be present in one location. So Jolthar has to search through the lands and find them and then kill them.

It seemed like an impossible mission right from the start itself.

Richardus looked like he had bitten into something sour—he had clearly wanted immediate execution or imprisonment, not this complex arrangement that might actually result in Joltharʼs vindication if he succeeded.

Bahste Fatlerʼs expression remained calculating, clearly already planning how to use this development regardless of which way it resolved.

Milan and Andrion both looked simultaneously relieved that Jolthar hadnʼt been executed on the spot and horrified at what he had just committed to attempting.

General Reminʼs face showed something that might have been approval—respect for someone willing to take on an impossible challenge rather than submit to unjust persecution.

The Emperor stood from his throne, indicating the formal audience was concluding.

”Kaezhlar, you are free to prepare for your mission as you see fit. Ministers, General Remin, come with me.”

Remin looked at Jolthar before he left and patted his shoulder. Wymar could only give him a glance filled with concern and pity.

As people began filing out of the hall, their conversations already buzzing with speculation about what had just transpired, the Emperor caught Joltharʼs eye one more time.

That slight smile was still there, and in the Emperorʼs gaze was something Jolthar couldnʼt quite identify—curiosity perhaps, or anticipation, or the look of someone who had just set a fascinating game in motion and was eager to see how the pieces would move.

Jolthar bowed again, then turned to leave with Milan and Andrion.

As they exited the imperial hall into the night air, Milan finally spoke, his voice tight with concern.

”Jolthar, do you have any idea what you just agreed to? The Dreadland Depths isnʼt just dangerous—itʼs where soldiers go mad, where reality itself breaks down, and where things exist that shouldnʼt be possible.”

”I know,” Jolthar replied calmly.

”Three duke-class nyphorites,” Andrion added, his voice carrying the edge of hysteria.

”Do you understand what those are? Theyʼre not just powerful monsters—theyʼre corrupted entities that have existed for centuries, that command armies of lesser horrors, that can regenerate from almost any damage.”

”I heard,” Jolthar confirmed.

”Then why did you accept?” Milan demanded.

”You could have... I donʼt know, fled the capital, gone into hiding, or something other than agreeing to what amounts to elaborate suicide!”

Jolthar stopped walking and turned to face both princes, his expression serious but not concerned.

”Because the Emperor gave me exactly what I needed—a way out that doesnʼt require bowing to corrupt ministers or admitting to crimes I didnʼt commit. Yes, itʼs dangerous. Yes, it might be impossible. But itʼs also a chance to prove that Iʼm worth more to this empire alive and free than dead or imprisoned.”

He smiled slightly.

”Besides, Iʼve been looking for a challenge. Might as well be this one.”

Andrion put his hand on Joltharʼs side.

”Thereʼs a thin line between courage and madness.”

Joltharʼs lips curved slightly. ”Only from a safe distance.”

As they walked through the imperial quarter toward Milanʼs villa, none of them could know that the Emperorʼs seemingly impossible task would set in motion events that would reshape not just Joltharʼs fate, but the future of the entire empire.

The game had begun.
