The Roach God

They went down through the third of the cleared chambers because the map drew the shortest descent there, and because Sacha had run out of ways to make the choice cleverer.

The descent was not a passage.

It was a shaft — near-vertical, cut, with a spiral of shallow footholds worn or carved into the wall in a pitch that fit a roach’s stride exactly and fit nothing else at all.

It went down further than his antennae could read.

This is the part where a sensible commander turns around, he sent to Thresh, who had come as far as the chamber and would come no further.

Yes.

You’re not going to argue.

I argued for six days, the beetle sent. You spent them correctly. There is nothing left for me to say that you have not already said to yourself twice. It shifted its bad side. Go down. Come back. If you do not come back I will tell them what you were doing and why, exactly, without decoration, and I will not let them make it into anything.

Its antennae moved once. And I will tell Vek, in your grammar, that you named her before you left and not after. She will want to know which way round it was.

Sacha considered that.

That’s the most useful thing anyone’s ever offered me.

It is what I have, Thresh sent. I am a record. It is the entire remaining function of my life and I have made my peace with it.

Sacha went down first.

There was an argument for sending a Cerci ahead — she was lighter, faster, and better at reading a fall — and he overruled it, and he was honest with himself about why:

because he had sent a third scout up a fracture mouth sixteen days ago and had spent twelve hours in the dark not knowing, and he was not going to do the version where he waited at the top of a shaft.

It was not good command.

He noted it as it happened.

He did it anyway, and filed the note next to the others.

The shaft took four hours.

At the bottom the air changed — warmer, wetter, with a mineral heaviness underneath it that Sacha’s antennae read as water in quantity, close.

The passage at the base ran level and straight for two hundred lengths, and it was not a fracture.

It was cut.

All of it.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from NovelPhoenix. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

Walls, floor, ceiling, worked to a consistent width by mandibles over a span of time Sacha declined to estimate.

And at two hundred lengths, it was blocked.

The block was deliberate — substrate packed into a passage-wide plug, the same technique as the cleared narrowing Khrr had found six weeks and a lifetime ago, executed at a scale that had taken a great many bodies a great deal of time. Sacha read it with rising understanding.

Sealed from this side, he sent to the party. They closed it behind them.

Then he read it again, more carefully, and corrected himself, and the correction was the coldest thing he had felt since the fracture mouth.

The plug had been packed from the far side.

The compression ran the wrong way.

Whoever built this had not sealed themselves in below.

They had sealed something out.

Above.

He was still working through what that meant when the plug moved.

Not violently.

There was no breach, no collapse, no rush.

A section of it, perhaps two body-widths across, simply drew inward and away, unhurried and evidently routine, the way a door opens for somebody who has done it ten thousand times.

Every one of the five behind him held position, which was the four rules, which was a cellar three months and two thousand lengths west of here.

The thing that came through the gap was a roach.

It was larger than any roach Sacha had ever seen — half again his own length, and his own length had been growing for three months — and it was pale in the specific way of something whose line had not seen light in a very long time.

Its antennae were enormous.

Its carapace was scarred, worked, and bore markings in two places that had been deliberately cut into it.

It stopped four lengths away, which was not a hunting distance.

Sacha cataloged it in the two seconds available, because the part of him that took inventory had never once stopped, not in a crawlspace and not here.

Half again his length.

Pale.

Antennae disproportionate even for a species that led with them — grown, presumably, in an environment where vibration was the only sense worth having.

Two cut markings on the carapace, deliberate, in positions that a roach could not have reached on itself.

Somebody else had cut those.

Which meant there were others.

Which meant a society that understood marking an individual.

And underneath all of it, the thing his antennae had been reporting since the plug drew back and which he had been too occupied to register:

No Sanctuary.

No pressure.

No claim.

He was standing four lengths from a large, worked, deliberate, unmistakably organized member of his own species, and there was no god behind it at all.

Then it laid a mark on the floor between them, in a grammar Sacha did not know, and waited — and Sacha understood, with total clarity and no ability at all to act on it, that he had just been asked a question by his own species and could not read a word of it.

He did the only thing available.

He laid the four marks.

All of them, in order, slowly, the public language his colony had learned in nine days at a junction in the wet ground — this ground is held, no faction, we will talk, we carry — and he laid them knowing that three of the four were nonsense here, because he did not hold this ground and he was not carrying anything and the only one that meant a thing at this depth was the third.

He laid them anyway, because they were what he had, and because a colony that says the same four true things everywhere is a colony whose word means something in more than one room.

The pale roach read them.

The pale roach read them.

It took its time about it, working left to right along the sequence with the enormous antennae, and Sacha had the distinct and disorienting sense of being proofread.

Then it reached out with one foreleg and, without hesitation, corrected the third one.

It did not scrub the mark.

It adjusted it — added a stroke, shifted the emphasis of the second element, and drew back.

Sacha looked at his own sentence, altered by a stranger, and found he could still read it.

Whatever we will talk had been in his grammar, it now said something adjacent and more precise, and he could not have articulated the difference in words and understood it completely anyway.

It had not said no.

It had not said yes.

It had said:

not like that.

Like this.
