The Roach God

He put the question to Khrr the next day, at the reporting crawl, in the halting hybrid of scent and touch and repetition that two months had built between them — and got an answer he hadn’t been braced for.

The question had been simple, or he’d thought it was:

which of the two routes out did Khrr favor, the long southern arc through unknown ground, or the short eastern run through a war corridor.

He’d built the query carefully, two marked points and a comparison, the way he’d been building queries for weeks.

He expected a preference.

Preferences were the ceiling of what this crude channel had ever carried.

What he got, laid out in a scent-pattern Khrr had clearly worked on well before he ever asked, was a third option he hadn’t considered.

A staged crossing.

Three groups, moving on separate nights rather than one mass migration. And — the part that stopped him cold — the nursery going second rather than first, so that the initial group could fail informatively without costing the young.

Sacha read it twice, then a third time, checking whether he was projecting sophistication onto a pattern that didn’t contain it.

He wasn’t.

The logic was all there, laid out in the sequence itself: group one as reconnaissance-in-force, group two as the irreplaceable cargo moving on verified ground, group three as rearguard for whatever came after. It was better than either of his own plans.

It was better for a reason he found genuinely uncomfortable — it accepted, structurally, that the first group might not make it. Sacha had known that abstractly for days and had not been able to build it into anything, because building it in meant deciding who went first, and he had been quietly, cowardly deferring that decision.

You’ve been thinking about this, he sent, uselessly, into a channel that didn’t reach and never had.

Khrr couldn’t answer that. But it did something else, which took Sacha most of the evening to interpret and which he was still turning over days later.

It marked itself into the first group.

Not as a proposal.

Not as an offer awaiting approval.

As a completed fact, written into the plan before Sacha ever saw it, in the same unadorned scent-grammar as the route markers — the way you’d write down a thing already settled rather than a thing under discussion.

He tried, that night, to reach it properly. He knew it wouldn’t work. He tried anyway, for something close to an hour, pushing thought outward at a mind sitting four inches from his own with the deliberate, straining focus he’d once used to force a memory of a drug interaction he hadn’t slept enough to recall properly.

Nothing crossed.

Same as the first night in the crawlspace.

Two minds inside one claim, with nothing between them to broadcast across — the Sanctuary that let him shout at a rat through a wall was precisely the thing that made Khrr unreachable, because Khrr wasn’t on the other side of anything.

Khrr was inside.

He let that particular irony stand a while.

Then he did what he could actually do:

he took the plan, and he changed nothing in it, and he went out to the reporting crawl and stood beside Khrr for a long time in the dark, which was the only available way to say I read it, all of it, and I’m not going to pretend I didn’t understand the part you wrote about yourself.

He’d been thinking of Khrr, he realized somewhere in that hour, as a capability. An extraordinary one — the single best thing that had happened to the colony after the spider — but a capability, the way a senior medic on a crew is a capability. Something you deploy correctly. Something whose quality you assess.

What had just been handed to him was not a capability’s output.

It was a decision, made by someone with their own read of the stakes, their own weighting of whose lives were worth more than whose, and their own answer to a question Sacha had been avoiding for a week.

What do you actually want, he thought, watching the small, unremarkable roach he’d named on a whim in the wreckage of a spider fight — a roach that had, at some point he’d entirely failed to notice, stopped being a student.

He had no way to ask.

Scent and touch could carry a plan; they could not carry why.

And it struck him, with the particular discomfort of a thing that has been true for a while before you notice it, that Khrr had likely been living with the mirror of this problem for two months — a mind sharp enough to form intentions, with no way to explain a single one of them to the only other person in the world who might understand them.

Two months of being read as competent by someone who never once asked what it wanted.

That gap was going to have to close. Not for efficiency, and not because a better-coordinated colony climbed faster. Because a lieutenant who could write him a better plan than his own and could not tell him what it had cost to write it was not a lieutenant.

It was a person he was failing.

[Sanctuary: internal cohesion rising. Divine Creature — Echelon 3 of 9. Progress toward Echelon 4: marginal.]

Marginal. Sacha looked at the word without resentment, which surprised him a little. Two months ago he’d have read it as an insult and spent a night arguing with it. Now he read it as an accurate description of a colony that had claimed a cellar it couldn’t feed itself in, planned a crossing it hadn’t attempted, and possessed exactly one member besides himself capable of independent thought.

The ladder wasn’t wrong.

There simply wasn’t much here yet.

So he started making a list — the real kind, the kind he used to build at the start of a shift when everything was already going badly and pretending otherwise would kill someone. Language with Khrr, somehow, by some route he hadn’t found yet. Thresh’s corridor, scouted properly rather than trusted secondhand, because a map drawn from memory by a survivor was a hypothesis and not a fact. The southern arc mapped before it was dismissed, since dismissing the unknown option to avoid the frightening known one was exactly the kind of reasoning that got crews killed.

And underneath all of it, unresolved and getting closer, a date scratched into concrete by people who had no idea that anything down here was making plans at all.
