The Roach God

The plan was, on paper, the finest piece of work Sacha had done since waking up in this body.

Twenty from Carapace to anchor the line at the warren’s mouth. The full speed of Cerci working the flanks, harassing without engaging, keeping the target turning instead of pressing. Increvable holding the rear to absorb anything that broke through. Every lineage doing precisely the job its own biology had spent two months growing itself toward — three full days of drilling against the closest approximation of the terrain he could build back in the duct.

It was the plan of a commander who had learned, expensively, not to trust a single clever idea to carry an entire fight.

It did not survive contact.

The chokepoint tactic that had broken the centipedes assumed a fight with edges — a narrow mouth, a predictable approach, somewhere for a flank to actually flank. Sacha had built his entire scheme on that assumption without ever writing it down as an assumption, which is the only way an assumption ever gets to do real damage.

The deep ground had no edges.

It was a warren, not a corridor:

cracked concrete opening into cracked concrete in every direction, above and below as much as side to side.

There was no mouth to hold.

There was only the illusion of one, which held for exactly as long as it took the thing inside to decide to leave by a different route.

It came out behind them.

Sacha never got a clean look at it, then or afterward.

What he got was an impression assembled out of vibration and scent and the way his line came apart:

low, and wide, and appallingly fast for its mass — built for exactly this terrain the way his roaches were built for flat duct floor. And it did not reset between strikes.

The spider had needed to recoil, reposition, re-anchor; that pause had been the entire foundation of the first victory of his new life. This thing simply continued.

He felt the plan come apart in real time, and the feeling was one he recognized with sickening precision from the worst calls of his old career: the moment a routine job turns into something nobody in the truck has trained for, and every second of hesitation afterward costs exactly what it looks like it will cost.

There is a specific kind of noise a formation makes when it stops being a formation.

Not panic, exactly — his roaches were better than that by now — but the sound of thirty separate correct decisions being made at once by creatures who could no longer see the shape of the whole. The Cerci flanks tried to reposition toward a threat that had already moved. The Increvable rear closed on an opening that no longer existed. Every individual piece of his plan continued executing itself faithfully, in the dark, against nothing, while the actual fight happened somewhere else entirely.

That was the part he would think about afterward, at length, and not enjoy. Not the deaths. The obedience. Sixty creatures doing precisely what he had drilled them to do, exactly as instructed, while it killed them — because the instruction had been built on a map of a place that did not exist.

The Carapace line held. That was the terrible part. They held the way he’d drilled them to hold, against something the drill had never accounted for, and holding was the wrong instruction.

He called the retreat two seconds late.

He knew it was two seconds late while he was doing it. Some stubborn, useless part of him wanted one more moment to see whether the line would stabilize — the same part that had, in another life, kept him working a patient past the point where the numbers had already answered the question. That half-second of wanting was the entire difference between a costly withdrawal and the one that actually happened.

Six dead.

Not three. Not a clean, bearable figure he could file under the price of a functioning plan. Six, out of a colony of sixty-odd — a tenth of everything he had, gone in under a minute in a place he’d chosen.

Runner was one of them.

The twitchy, reckless roach he’d hand-trained at the very beginning, back when the whole world was a gap behind a water heater and the entire war was one spider. The one that used to bolt every time Sacha touched an antenna to its back, and had spent two months turning that same nervous energy into precisely the kind of nerve a flank position needs.

He’d been the second living thing in this world Sacha had ever given a name to.

Sacha carried that one differently from the other five, and he made himself do it standing up, in front of the whole retreating line, rather than alone somewhere afterward where it would have been easier and less useful.

[Territory: unclaimed. No progress recorded.]

That was all of it. No consolation clause. No partial credit for sound planning. No acknowledgment anywhere in the flat bracketed text that he had learned anything, or tried, or come close.

The ladder did not care that the plan had been good. It cared what the plan had bought.

Today it had bought him six bodies and a walk back through three days of tunnel with nothing to show anyone at the other end.

The colony knew before he reached it. He’d expected that — scent travels ahead of a returning party, and a party returning short travels a very specific scent indeed — but he had not expected what it looked like.

They didn’t scatter.

They didn’t panic.

Sixty roaches simply stopped what they were doing as the survivors came in, and oriented, and waited, and Sacha understood with a lurch that they were waiting for him, because in two months he had never once come home without something to show them.

He had nothing.

There was no gesture available in scent or posture that meant I was wrong and it cost six of us, and no version of standing there in silence that wasn’t its own kind of statement.

So he did the only thing left. He walked the line — all of it, every position, every roach — the way he used to walk a ward at the end of a shift that had gone badly, and he did not hurry, and he did not skip anyone.

It took most of the night.

It changed nothing operational whatsoever.

He did it anyway, and noticed, somewhere around the third hour, that Khrr had fallen in behind him at the start and had not left.
