The Roach God

It took six days before the beetle could hold a thought steady enough to share one, and Sacha spent every one of them doing something he had not allowed himself since the crawlspace: nothing urgent.

He sat with it through the quiet hours.

He let Khrr and the Swarm lines run the colony’s daily grind without him hovering, and discovered, slightly to his own discomfort, that they ran it perfectly well. And mostly he waited, the way he used to wait beside a patient too unstable to question — keeping something alive long enough for it to eventually tell you what had actually happened to it, and resisting the urge to rush that for your own convenience.

Its name, when it could finally offer one, came through as something closer to a sensation than a sound. Thresh was the nearest shape Sacha’s mind could hold it in, and he used it from then on, aware that he was almost certainly getting it slightly wrong and that Thresh was probably being polite about it.

What Thresh gave him, once the fragments stopped scattering, was less a story than a map — impressions rather than detail, geography rather than narrative.

There was a hive. Ancient, by any standard Sacha had yet encountered, holding an entire wing of the building’s foundation for longer than any single generation of anything down there could remember. Thresh’s impression of it carried no hostility at all, which unsettled Sacha more than hatred would have — it was the flat, unquestioning weight people give to weather, or to a mountain. The hive was simply a fact of the world you organized your life around.

And then there was the other one. Newer. Faster-growing. Pressing into the hive’s territory not because it needed the space — Thresh was clear on this point, or as clear as a mind in that condition could be — but because pressing into an old power’s ground was, in itself, worth something.

They’re not fighting over food, Sacha thought, turning that over with something close to dread. They’re fighting because the fight itself pays. Because beating something old and respected is a shortcut nobody offered me.

That single idea rearranged more of his thinking than anything else Thresh gave him.

He had assumed — without ever noticing he’d assumed it — that conflict on this ladder worked the way it had worked for him. Forced. Defensive. Chosen only when the alternative was worse. He’d built that assumption out of a spider that was eating his nest and a stretch of duct he needed to survive, and it had felt so obviously correct that he’d never examined it.

Thresh’s fragments described something colder sitting above his crawlspace war: ambition that manufactured its own justification. Powers picking fights specifically because winning them meant something to whoever was keeping score. Ground taken not for what it produced but for what taking it proved.

This book’s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

If that was how the upper reaches of this thing worked, then every quiet, patient, unglamorous plan he’d been making about ducts and lineages and defensible nurseries had a ceiling built into it he hadn’t seen. He could build the best-run colony in the sector and it would still, eventually, be standing on ground that someone above him wanted to prove something on.

He filed that next to the demolition date — a second education running underneath the first, both of them counting down toward the same conclusion: what you have is not enough, and the reason it isn’t has nothing to do with how well you’ve managed it.

He asked, carefully, about ranks. It was the first real question he’d put to Thresh directly, and he framed it the way he’d once framed questions to patients about things they might not want to look at.

The answer that came back was mostly negative space. Thresh didn’t know the hive’s rank, or wouldn’t shape it. But the impression that came with the non-answer was instructive on its own: the question was slightly absurd. Like asking a man which floor the sky was on.

So they’re far enough up that the number stops being the point, Sacha thought. Good. At least I know the shape of what I can’t see yet.

[Bloodline drift detected: sensory refinement, Lineage Unbreaking, emerging.]

That one arrived almost as an aside, and it took him a moment to work out what had caused it. Then he did, and it was so simple he nearly laughed.

The roaches who had taken shifts at Thresh’s side through the worst of its recovery — six days of doing nothing dramatic whatsoever, just refusing to stop, night after night, keeping still beside something that might die — had started to carry a little of that into their own bodies. Not toughness in the sense of armor. Toughness in the sense of duration.

Four lineages now. Not one of them planned from a chart. Every single one grown out of something the colony had actually been asked to do. What his race became was going to be a permanent record of what he had spent them on.

He turned that over for a while, and did not entirely enjoy it. There was a version of the thought that was flattering — I am shaping a people — and a version that wasn’t, and the unflattering one had the advantage of being true. He hadn’t set out to breed endurance into anyone. He’d asked exhausted roaches to sit up with a dying stranger because he couldn’t stand the alternative, and the species had quietly filed that away as an instruction.

He was going to have to be careful about what he asked for. Not morally careful. Structurally careful. Every standing order he gave was a vote on what his descendants would be, cast by someone who wouldn’t be around to see the results and hadn’t been asked whether he wanted the responsibility.

Thresh, when he raised it, disagreed — which was itself new. Up to that point the beetle had answered questions. It had not yet argued with one.

You think it is what you ask, it sent. It is what they survive. Different.

Those are the same thing. I decide what they face.

No. Flat, with an edge Sacha hadn’t heard from it before. My colony was asked to hold a corridor. What we became was not holders of corridors. What we became was four hundred bodies that could run very fast in a straight line and could do nothing else at all. A pause. He asked for one thing. The corridor gave us another.

Sacha turned that over and found he couldn’t dismiss it, and found he didn’t want to. It was the first time anyone in this world had told him he was wrong about something and been able to explain why.

It occurred to him, somewhat late, that he had been treating Thresh as a source. Sources answered. This one had opinions, and had been sitting on them politely for a week and a half, and had presumably formed several about him.
