The Martial Unity

Chapter 3638: A Solution of Finesse

Rui truly was not eager to get into yet another long-term deal with the Divine Doctor, but the boons were too great this time. He already had a lot of commitments to keep to a lot of people, so the notion of another one as major as what the Divine Doctor was trying to accomplish was not pleasant.

The moment he acquiesced, the Divine Doctor was a lot more loose-tongued about the solution to the problem that Rui was facing.

”The problem is your T-cells,” the Divine Doctor informed him with a matter-of-fact tone. ”They are types of white blood cells in your body that are responsible for targeting cancerous cells, bacteria, and viruses in your body. When you think of your immune system reacting adversely to the evosapien cell in your body, that is the thing that you are thinking about. It correctly recognizes that the evosapien cell in your body is a foreign agent and thus attacks it. If you let it simply be, then eventually your cells will consume the evosapien cell, but not immediately, so you don’t need to be so fearfully protective of it.”

Rui raised an eyebrow. ”Not immediately?”

”Correct, the adaptive evolution of the evosapien race emerges from a cellular level,” the Divine Doctor reminded him. ”Which means even individual evosapien stem cells have tremendous adaptive evolution. In some ways, stem cells are already highly evolved, although that isn’t the proper terminology or conceptualization. But you can imagine what evosapien stem cells are capable of with the combination of them being stem cells and evosapien cells.”

Rui’s eyes lit up. ”So you’re saying that the evosapien stem cell can adaptively evolve to my immune system?”

”It certainly can,” the Divine Doctor remarked. ”I sequenced and studied the evosapien genome myself. I know that it is capable of adaptively evolving to your immune system and bypassing it.”

That made sense, now that Rui thought about it. After all, Anthea’s evosapien cell adaptively evolved to the Gu; why would Rui assume that it wouldn’t be able to adaptively evolve to his immune system?

”Still,” Rui continued, turning back to the Divine Doctor beside him. ”Wouldn’t that mean that their capacity to adaptively evolve in battle will be limited since they spend so much of their adaptive evolution capital just dealing with my immune system?”

”That is true,” the Divine Doctor admitted. ”They will be much less capable in battle since they spend so much time fighting off your T-cells with whatever means they choose. This is the drawback of what is probably the simplest solution to your problem.”

”That’s unacceptable, I won’t allow the evosapien cells to be less effective in battle.” Rui shook his head. ”There has to be another way.”

”Right now, you are using your Martial Soul to keep your immune system in check against the evosapien cell, are you not?” The Divine Doctor raised an eyebrow. ”I assume you are not satisfied with this course of action?”

”Doing it for one cell is easy, but I’m planning on doing it for my entire body. It would become too draining to use my Martial Soul to singlehandedly stop my immune system from attacking it. The moment I am knocked out after a battle, my entire body will attack itself. It would be the most horrific autoimmune disease in the world,” Rui explained.

”That makes sense. Indeed, the Martial Soul is an active intervention, and it is not feasible to use it constantly just to keep yourself from dying,” the Divine Doctor mused. ”I suppose the solution you are hoping for is to somehow make your immune system accept the evosapien cells.”

Rui nodded. ”I don’t want to brute force it through some sort of purge of all my white blood cells, that would risk me dying of an infection. And with the pressure that the gu puts on me, it is not worth the risk.”

”That is prudent,” the Divine Doctor remarked. ”But you see, your body already has a purging system where white blood cells are tested and trained not to attack certain cells in your body. It’s called the thymus.”

He gestured to a spot on his chest. ”It’s a special organ within your chest which trains your T-cells on what to attack and what not to. Essentially, it subjects all those specialized white blood cells to an intense set of exams to ensure that the white blood cells function properly.”

”Thymus...” Rui muttered.

He had never heard of it, although the moment the Divine Doctor explained it, he could locate it within his body in an instant.

Martial Sages possessed the ability to study their body in profound depth and even tinker with them through their Martial Soul. However, most of them did not go too far in trying to do so, for they had no idea how the human body worked.

It would be like trying to tinker with the engine of a plane when one had no idea how anything worked. If something went wrong, they would have an absolute way of knowing the right way to undo something they did wrong.

Of course, Rui’s understanding of biology was vastly greater than that of a Martial Sage. It allowed him to create techniques like Hungry Pain at a very early stage in his Martial Path. And later, it allowed him to create incredible techniques that broke paradigms in Martial Art.

However, even Rui’s knowledge was still relatively shallow compared to that of an actual biologist.

Especially compared to the best biologist in Panama. The Divine Doctor’s knowledge and understanding of biology and medicine were on a whole other level, given that he unlocked immortality with his knowledge and skill, rather than brute force like Rui did.

”Your goal should be the thymus,” the Divine Doctor informed him. ”Start by inserting the evosapien cell into the thymus and having all the T-cells in your body educated regarding evosapien microbiology.”

”Educated?” Rui’s eyes lit up as he soaked in the solution that the Divine Doctor provided him. ”Does it educate or does it simply filter out those that fail its tests?”
