The Maker: Hollywood

The smell of rendered guanciale and toasted black pepper filled the massive kitchen of the Bel Air estate.

Daniel stood in front of the six-burner Wolf range, expertly tossing a pan of spaghetti. He splashed a small ladle of starchy pasta water into the mix, stirring vigorously to emulsify the pecorino romano and the pork fat into a glossy, perfectly thick carbonara sauce.

A few years ago, Daniel trying to cook dinner would have resulted in a triggered smoke alarm, a charred pan, and a resigned call to a local pizza delivery place. He had been notoriously terrible in the kitchen during his twenties. But over the last decade, mostly to preserve his own sanity and step away from the relentless, high-pressure world of studio management, he had quietly taught himself how to actually cook. It was tactile. It was immediate. And unlike a two-hundred-million-dollar movie, he could see the results in twenty minutes.

A few feet away, Florence was sitting sideways on one of the plush velvet barstools at the kitchen island. She was wearing gray sweatpants and one of Daniel’s faded oversized t-shirts, her bare legs draped casually over Margot’s lap.

Margot sat on the adjacent stool, wearing a silk robe over her pajamas, her blonde hair piled loosely on top of her head in a messy claw clip. She was sipping a glass of Pinot Noir and holding the printed, heavy copy of the Shawshank Redemption script.

”I’m just saying,” Florence said, reaching over to steal a piece of bread from a basket on the counter. ”I read the whole thing this afternoon. It’s a beautifully written piece of art. Really, it is. But there is literally not a single woman in this entire movie.”

”There are women in it,” Daniel said, not looking up from the stove as he turned off the heat.

”Oh, right,” Margot deadpans, flipping toward the back of the script. ”My mistake. There’s a poster of Rita Hayworth. And later, a poster of Marilyn Monroe. Groundbreaking feminist representation, Daniel.”

”It’s a maximum security men’s penitentiary in 1947,” Daniel pointed out, grabbing three ceramic bowls from the overhead cabinet. ”What do you want me to do, write in a female prison warden just for the demographics?”

”I’m just saying it’s a total sausage fest,” Florence teased, taking a sip of her own wine. ”A very gritty, depressing, critically acclaimed sausage fest. You go from making a beautiful, vibrant animated movie in space, straight into a movie where a bunch of guys just stare at concrete walls and talk about their feelings for twenty years.”

”He’s having a midlife crisis,” Margot agreed solemnly, nodding at Florence. ”Most directors buy a sports car. Daniel just builds a 1940s prison so he can lock a bunch of A-list actors inside it.”

Daniel laughed, shaking his head as he plated the pasta. He carried the bowls over to the kitchen island, setting them down in front of them. The steam rose off the carbonara, smelling rich and savory.

”Just eat the pasta,” Daniel said, leaning against the marble counter across from them.

Florence picked up her fork, twirled a small amount of the spaghetti, and took a bite. She chewed slowly, her eyes widening just a fraction. She looked at Margot.

”Okay, I hate to admit it when he’s being smug, but this is actually incredible,” Florence mumbled around the food.

Margot took a bite of her own and sighed, setting her wine glass down. ”It really is. Do you remember when he tried to make us chicken piccata and the kitchen smelled like burnt lemons for three days?”

”Vividly,” Florence said.

”I’m standing right here,” Daniel reminded them, crossing his arms.

”We know,” Margot smiled, reaching across the island to pat his hand affectionately. ”We’re proud of you, honey. Your cooking is almost as good as your depressing prison script. Have you locked down the cast yet?”

”Cillian is in for Andy,” Daniel said, stealing a sip of Florence’s wine since his hands were free. ”Tom is dealing with Denzel’s agents right now for the role of Red. They were supposed to send over the preliminary paperwork this afternoon.”

Florence raised an eyebrow. ”Denzel? That’s an interesting choice. I figured he was too busy shooting people in slow motion in all those action franchises to take a character piece.”

”That’s exactly why I want him,” Daniel said. ”People forgot he’s a powerhouse stage actor. I want to take the gun out of his hand and just let him talk.”

”Well,” Margot said, taking another bite of the carbonara. ”If anyone can get him to do it, it’s you. Just don’t let him rewrite the script to give himself a bazooka.”

They spent the rest of the evening ignoring the studio entirely. They sat around the kitchen island, finishing the wine, talking about Florence’s upcoming press tour and Margot’s reading of a new indie script.

The next morning, however, the grounded peace of Bel Air evaporated the second Daniel stepped into his office at Miller Studios.

Tom was already waiting for him. He was sitting on the leather sofa, his laptop open, looking incredibly annoyed.

”Good morning to you, too,” Daniel said, dropping his messenger bag on his desk and walking over to the coffee machine in the corner.

”WME is being a bitch,” Tom said flatly, not even looking up from his screen.

Daniel paused, a ceramic mug halfway to the coffee dispenser. ”Denzel’s agency?”

”Yeah,” Tom sighed, rubbing his temples. ”I sent the script over to his lead packaging agent yesterday. They read it. They loved the prestige of it. They love that it’s a Miller Studios production. But they’re playing gatekeeper. They refuse to pass it directly to Denzel unless we agree to a few ’minor creative adjustments’.”

Daniel pressed the button on the machine, the dark coffee streaming into his mug. ”Define minor.”

Tom let out a dry, humorless laugh. ”They want us to give Red an action-hero edge. They literally sent over a coverage note suggesting we add a scene where a prison riot breaks out in the cafeteria, and Red has to brutally disarm a couple of corrupt guards to save Andy. They said it protects Denzel’s current box-office brand as an untouchable action star.”

Daniel stared at the wall for a second, processing the sheer, unfathomable stupidity of the request.

A prison riot. In Shawshank. Where the entire point of the character was that he was a deeply institutionalized, weary older man who was terrified of stepping out of line.

”They want Red to do martial arts,” Daniel said, his voice dangerously flat.

”They want him to look like a badass,” Tom corrected, tossing his phone onto the sofa cushion. ”I told them that completely defeats the emotional arc of the movie. They pushed back. They said Denzel’s audience expects a certain level of physical dominance from him, and they aren’t going to let him take a supporting role where he just sits around playing checkers and narrating.”

Tom looked up at Daniel, expecting him to be frustrated. He expected Daniel to tell him to set up a lunch, or to try and bypass the agents entirely and drive down to whatever set Denzel was currently working on to pitch the actor face-to-face. That was how it usually worked in Hollywood. When an agency played hardball, the director had to go charm the talent directly.

But Daniel didn’t sigh. He didn’t look stressed. He just took a sip of his coffee, walked around his desk, and sat down in his leather chair.

”Pull the offer,” Daniel said.

Tom blinked, completely caught off guard. ”What?”

”You heard me,” Daniel said, opening his laptop. ”Pull the offer. Right now. Withdraw the script, tell WME we’re moving in a different direction, and cancel the contract drafts.”

”Dan, hold on,” Tom said, sitting up straight. ”It’s Denzel. We knew his reps were going to be a headache. I can probably get around them if we just give it a few days. If you just call him directly—”

”I’m not doing the back-and-forth, Tom,” Daniel interrupted, his tone completely calm but entirely final. ”I’m not begging an agency to let me cast their client. And I’m certainly not negotiating the fundamental soul of my script with a twenty-eight-year-old packaging agent who thinks every movie needs a cafeteria brawl.”

Daniel looked at his partner. ”People are dying to be in our movies, Tom. Not the other way around. Agents seem to forget that sometimes. They cling to the old ways of doing business, thinking they hold the keys to the castle. They don’t. We do. If WME wants to play gatekeeper and protect an action brand instead of letting their client read a masterpiece, they can deal with the consequences.”

Tom slowly closed his laptop. He understood exactly what Daniel was saying. At this point in his career, Daniel Miller was the absolute peak of the mountain. He had spent a decade building a studio that didn’t just compete with the Big Six, it routinely humiliated them. He didn’t need to play the Hollywood game anymore. He owned the board.

”Alright,” Tom said, a slow, slightly wicked grin spreading across his face. ”Offer is pulled. Who do you want to call?”

”Call Morgan Freeman’s reps,” Daniel said immediately. ”Tell them I have a script. Tell them it’s shooting in a month. He’ll understand the dialogue the second he reads it.”

”Morgan Freeman,” Tom nodded, writing the name down on his legal pad. ”It’s a slight pivot in energy, but honestly? It fits perfectly. He has that incredible warmth to his voice. He can absolutely carry the narration.”

”He’ll nail it,” Daniel agreed.

Tom stood up, grabbing his laptop and his phone. He paused near the door, looking back at Daniel.

”You know,” Tom said, highly amused, ”when Denzel eventually finds out that his agents actively hid a Daniel Miller script from him because they wanted a karate scene, he is going to physically dismantle their office.”

”That sounds like a WME problem, not a Miller Studios problem,” Daniel said lightly, already typing on his computer. ”Let me know when Morgan signs.”

Tom chuckled and walked out, shutting the door behind him.

A few miles away, the atmosphere in Beverly Hills was significantly less relaxed.

The Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel was usually a place for quiet, elegant power lunches. Studio heads, major producers, and A-list talent managers sat in the plush green booths, eating overpriced salads and conducting business in hushed, polite tones.

Marcus was sitting alone in a corner booth, halfway through a Cobb salad, reading a breakdown of the international distribution numbers for Treasure Planet on his iPad. He was enjoying a rare moment of peace away from the ringing phones of his Burbank office.

That peace was abruptly shattered when a man slid uninvited into the booth across from him.

Marcus looked up, slightly irritated.

The man sitting across from him was Dewitt Harrison. He was a senior member of the Walt Disney Studios interim board of directors. He was wearing a suit that was too heavy for the California weather, his tie was loosened, and he looked like he hadn’t slept a full night since the audio leak had ruined his life.

”Marcus,” Dewitt said, his voice tight and breathless.

Marcus slowly set his fork down. He didn’t lock his iPad. He didn’t offer a polite greeting. Approaching a rival studio executive uninvited during a private lunch was a massive breach of industry etiquette. It screamed of absolute, unmitigated desperation.

”I’m eating, Dewitt,” Marcus said neutrally.

”I know, I know, I apologize for the intrusion,” Dewitt stammered, glancing nervously around the restaurant to make sure none of the entertainment journalists at the bar were looking their way. ”I just needed a backchannel. I couldn’t call your office. If the trades find out I called Miller Studios, it’ll send the wrong signal.”

”You sitting in my booth is already sending the wrong signal,” Marcus pointed out. ”What do you want?”

Dewitt leaned forward, resting his forearms on the pristine white tablecloth. ”You’ve seen our stock. It’s a bloodbath, Marcus. The institutional investors are panicking. We are highly vulnerable right now. We’re getting whispers that tech conglomerates—Apple, Amazon—are circling the water. They want to buy us out just to gut our library for their streaming services and sell off the parks.”

Marcus picked his fork back up and stabbed a piece of grilled chicken. ”Sounds like a tough week for you guys.”

”Marcus, please,” Dewitt pleaded, dropping all pretense of corporate pride. ”We don’t want to get swallowed by a tech company that doesn’t care about movies. We need stability. We need a show of market confidence. If Daniel Miller were to publicly acquire a minority stake in Disney—just ten percent, a strategic equity partnership—it would instantly stop the bleeding. The market trusts Daniel. It would stabilize our valuation overnight.”

Marcus chewed his chicken slowly, staring at the sweaty, terrified executive across from him.

It was almost sad. Disney, the historic empire built by Walt himself, the studio that had dominated global culture for a century, was now sending board members to beg a privately owned studio for a bailout.

”A strategic partnership,” Marcus repeated flatly.

”We would offer incredibly favorable terms,” Dewitt rushed to add. ”Preferred voting shares. A seat on the interim board. Co-financing options on our upcoming slate.”

Marcus wiped his mouth with a linen napkin. ”Let me make sure I understand this, Dewitt. Two weeks ago, Lyle Prescott called the largest theater chains in the world and tried to extort them into pulling our movie off their screens. He tried to actively choke out our animation department.”

”Lyle was acting unilaterally!” Dewitt protested quietly. ”The board didn’t authorize that call!”

”The board enabled him for five years,” Marcus countered coldly. ”And now that the grenade blew up in your own hands, you want Daniel to write you a multi-billion-dollar check to protect you from the consequences.”

Dewitt swallowed hard, his face pale. ”It’s a mutually beneficial financial maneuver. We—”

”I will relay the message to Daniel,” Marcus interrupted, effectively ending the conversation. He picked his iPad back up. ”But I wouldn’t hold your breath, Dewitt. Have a good afternoon.”

Dewitt opened his mouth to say something else, but Marcus wasn’t looking at him anymore. Defeated, the Disney executive slid out of the booth and walked quickly out of the restaurant, looking like a man walking to the gallows.

An hour and half later, Marcus was back in Burbank, standing in Daniel’s office, recounting the incredibly pathetic lunch.

Daniel listened quietly from his desk, a small, cold smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

”A ten percent minority stake,” Daniel mused, shaking his head. ”They want us to bail them out just enough so they can keep their jobs and stay independent.”

”He was practically vibrating with panic,” Marcus laughed, dropping onto the leather sofa. ”He’s terrified Amazon is going to launch a hostile bid by the end of the month. So, what do you want me to tell him? Do we want a piece of the Mouse?”

Daniel turned his chair to look out the window toward the Valley. He thought about the vast infrastructure Disney owned. The parks. The real estate. It was still the ultimate prize.

But a ten percent stake didn’t give him control. It just gave him a very expensive, very messy liability.

”Tell Dewitt no,” Daniel said.

Marcus raised an eyebrow. ”Just a flat no?”

”A polite, flat no,” Daniel clarified. ”We don’t catch falling knives, Marcus. A minority stake does nothing for us except bail out the exact same people who just tried to sabotage my studio. I’m not writing them a check so they can save face.”

”So we just let Amazon buy them?”

”Amazon won’t buy them,” Daniel said confidently. ”The FTC will block a tech monopoly from swallowing a legacy media empire. It would get tied up in court for five years. Disney is going to sit there and bleed. Let them hit the floor. When they are completely out of options and looking for a total acquisition, then we can talk. Until then, we stay focused on our own slate.”

”Understood,” Marcus nodded, standing up. ”I’ll make the call.”

”Where is Sam?” Daniel asked, changing the subject completely. Corporate decay was boring. He wanted to see his movie.

”Stage 4,” Marcus said. ”He and Dante have been running double shifts on the construction crew since Tuesday.”

Daniel grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair and walked out of the office.

He took an electric golf cart across the sprawling studio lot, enjoying the warm California wind. The lot was incredibly busy. Grip trucks were backing into loading docks, extras in period costumes were walking toward the catering tents, and production assistants were running with walkie-talkies clipped to their belts.

He pulled up to the massive, hangar-like structure of Stage 4. The red warning light above the heavy acoustic doors was off, meaning they weren’t rolling sound.

Daniel pushed through the heavy doors and stepped into the cool, dark cavern of the soundstage.

He stopped completely still.

The sheer speed and scale of Miller Studios was something that never ceased to amaze him, no matter how many times he saw it.

Just a few days ago, this stage had been entirely empty. Now, an incredibly massive, multi-tiered steel and concrete structure rose toward the lighting grid in the ceiling. It was the main cellblock of Shawshank State Penitentiary.

It was breathtaking.

Dante Ferretti was standing on the second tier of the walkway, wearing his thick scarf, yelling instructions in rapid-fire Italian at a team of scenic painters below him.

Sam was standing near the base of the structure, holding a clipboard, looking exhausted but incredibly proud.

Daniel walked over, his footsteps echoing on the hard concrete floor. The air smelled of metallic dust, fresh paint, and something sharply chemical.

”Sam,” Daniel called out.

Sam turned around and smiled. ”Hey, Dan. What do you think?”

Daniel looked at the structure. It didn’t look like your usual Hollywood set. It looked terrifying. The walls were painted a sickly gray, peeling at the corners. The iron bars on the cells looked heavy, oppressive, and stained with decades of use.

”It’s incredible,” Daniel said, reaching out to grab one of the vertical iron bars on the nearest cell.

He expected it to feel like painted PVC pipe, or smooth, hollow aluminum. Instead, the surface was incredibly rough, catching against his skin. It felt like heavily oxidized, deeply rusted iron.

”How did you do this?” Daniel asked, rubbing his fingers together. They actually came away with a faint, reddish-brown dust.

”Dante,” Sam laughed, pointing up at the Italian designer. ”He absolutely refused to let the scenic department just paint the rust on. He found some specialized chemical wash. They treated the metal, oxidized it overnight, and sealed it with a matte clear-coat. He said the actors needed to feel the decay on their hands when they grab the bars.”

”The texture of despair,” Daniel murmured, remembering Dante’s exact words from the conference room.

”Exactly,” Sam nodded. ”We have the wild-lines rigged on the back walls of the cells on the first tier. Bob was in here an hour ago doing some preliminary light tests. He’s very happy with the depth. When we turn off the work lights and just leave the practical bare bulbs on, the shadows are practically crushing.”

Daniel stepped inside the small, six-by-eight cell. There was a thin, uncomfortable-looking cot bolted to the wall, a small porcelain sink that looked permanently stained, and a heavy, featureless metal toilet.

It was claustrophobic. It was designed to break the human spirit.

Daniel stood in the center of the cell, looking out through the rusted iron bars at the vast, dark emptiness of the soundstage beyond.

He couldn’t help but think about the corporate warfare happening a few miles away. The panicked executives, the crashing stock prices, the endless, invisible struggles for control over meaningless numbers on a spreadsheet.

None of it mattered in here.

In here, there was only the story. There was only the heavy 35mm film rolling through Bob Elswit’s camera. There was only Morgan Freeman’s deep, soulful voice echoing off the concrete, and Cillian Murphy’s quiet, unbroken defiance.

Daniel patted the rusted iron bar, a deep, settling calm washing over him. The stage was set. The cast was locking in.

”Looks good, Sam,” Daniel said softly, stepping back out of the cell. ”Very good.”
