Chapter List (352)
Fueled by a massive surge of confidence, Svane did not give the dark figure a single moment to breathe. The paralyzing dread of the unknown was gone, replaced by the confidence of the possibility of defeating the enemy.
Utilizing the hyper-speed granted by his 3rd-Circle Haste spell, Svane became a relentless blur of heavy adamantine plate. He closed the ten-foot gap before the dark figure could even fully right its ruined stance. Svane swung his Enchanted Blade in a rapid, devastating flurry of heavy, sweeping strikes.
The entity’s corrupted, matte-black body proved terrifyingly durable. Svane’s magically sharpened broad sword bit into the entity, leaving glowing gouges across its forearms and chest, but the steel simply could not cleave deep enough through the dense form to sever a limb.
Frustrated, the dark figure relied on its brutal brawler instincts. Ignoring the sweeping blade, it lunged forward, attempting to crush Svane’s ribcage with another devastating, bare-handed strike.
Once again, it hit the Aether-Infused Shield.
The exact same violent reflection occurred. The barrier absorbed the entirety of the heavy strike, compounded the kinetic energy, and aggressively detonated it straight back. The dark figure was violently launched ten feet backward through the air. As it tumbled, Svane heard the sickening, heavy crunch of the entity’s arm bones shattering under the weight of its own deflected strength.
But the victory was momentary. As the entity hit the dirt, Svane watched in horror as the pulsing black corruption instantly went to work. The thick, tar-like veins aggressively lashed out, pulling the shattered appendages back into place. The symbiotic loop was actively feeding on the dense ambient energy of the Whispering Hills, stitching the entity’s body back together as fast as Svane could break it.
Unlike the first exchange, however, Svane did not pause. He did not give the creature time to adjust. He charged again, his boots tearing up the earth as he locked the dark figure into a brutal, high-speed melee loop of strikes, blocks, and violent kinetic reflections.
Realizing that engaging this glowing, kinetic fortress in hand-to-hand combat was slowly tearing its own body apart, the dark figure changed tactics. As Svane brought his sword down for another heavy cleave, the entity utilized its Void Step.
There was no flash of light, no crack of displaced air. The dark figure simply melted backward into a cast shadow and seamlessly blinked twenty feet away, buying itself a momentary breather from the relentless spellsword.
Knowing it could not break Svane’s guard alone, the entity decided to overwhelm the Vanguard with sheer numbers. It planted its feet, tilted its featureless head back, and opened its mouth unnaturally wide. It was preparing to unleash the Corruption Resonance, the silent, telepathic frequency meant to summon the mutated beast pack back to the ridge.
Svane immediately halted his charge and braced his heavy tower shield, bracing for a massive magical beam or a mind-rending psychic attack.
A second passed. Then two.
Absolutely nothing happened. No sound came out. No magical pressure washed over the ridge. Svane blinked in confusion, wondering if the creature’s magic had somehow misfired.
Behind him, perfectly safe inside the invisible boundary of the Aetheric Null-Veil, Ray watched the dark figure open its mouth to scream. A cold calculating smirk crossed Ray’s face.
He dropped his hands. His work was already done.
(A few minutes earlier.)
After Svane charged out of the Aetheric Null-Veil, Ray’s tactical mind was already two steps ahead.
From what he had observed through Nox’s shared senses earlier, Ray knew this entity possessed a highly specialized, soundless frequency to command its pack. The Grizzled Commander had calculated the battle’s trajectory: the moment Svane applied enough overwhelming frontline pressure, the dark figure would inevitably call for its corrupted backup. To isolate the target and keep the skirmish contained, Ray needed to flatline that communication before it even started.
Ray recalled his secret testing sessions in Solhaven Academy with the Aether-Infusion technique. When he had first forced primordial Aether into the matrix of the 2nd-Circle Silence spell, the results had genuinely unnerved him. It hadn’t just muffled ambient noise, it had birthed the ‘Domain of the Void.’ The Aether violently flatlined all frequencies, instantly severing acoustic soundwaves, magical resonance, and even telepathic links. It created a suffocating deadzone that blinded the caster just as absolutely as the target.

Ray wasn’t entirely certain if the aether-infused spell could actually block the dark figure’s ‘Old Magic’ of soundless scream, but it was the most ideal tactical counter he could think of.
He just needed to make sure he didn’t silence himself in the process. Ray needed the interior of the runic array to remain functional for him to continue to support Svane..
Because he was still relatively inexperienced with 2nd-Circle spells, he couldn’t cast them instantly like his cantrips. The moment Svane left the dome, Ray drew heavily on his core. Shimmering, golden Primordial Aether flooded his veins. He stepped to the very edge of the array, meticulously performing the rigid, complex somatic hand signs.
”Fila rupta, vox nulla, Silentium.”
Ray chanted as he cast the 2nd Circle spell: Silence.
He pushed a certain amount of Primordial Aether into the spell matrix, unleashing the Domain of the Void across the battlefield.
So, as the spell matrix stabilized, Ray stepped to the very edge of the array waiting for the right moment.
(Present Moment.)
The exact second the dark figure unhinged its jaw to unleash the Corruption Resonance, Ray made his move.
He physically thrust his hands through the invisible boundary of the Aetheric Null-Veil, exposing his arms to the outside world to ensure the spell detonated outside their sanctuary.
A one-kilometer radius instantly dropped into the Domain of the Void.
For Svane, the world simply turned off. The sudden, absolute silence was a physical weight pressing against his eardrums. He thought the creature had permanently deafened him. He took a heavy step forward, but his adamantine boots made absolutely no sound against the rocks. The ambient rustling of the misty forest vanished.
The dark figure paused, its head tilting to the side in jarring, erratic jerks. It realized instantly that its telepathic call hadn’t gone through. The Aetheric Deadzone had violently crushed its psychic tether to the beast pack. The command frequency couldn’t even travel five feet before being completely swallowed by the void.
It was entirely cut off, isolated, and trapped with a Gold Aegis who was already raising his blade again.
Svane quickly realized the silence wasn’t deafness, but an environmental spell cast by his Lord. Pushing through the deep disorientation of losing a crucial battle sense, the Vanguard resumed his relentless, soundless assault.
Fighting in absolute silence was incredibly jarring. Svane swung his glowing broad sword, the sword biting deep into the entity’s chest, but there was no impact sound. There was no ringing of steel, no grunt of exertion, and no crunch of breaking stone. It felt like fighting in a terrifying, weightless dream.
As the combat dragged on and the dark figure took more and more reflected kinetic damage from the aether-infused Shield spell, Svane noticed something deeply unsettling.
The featureless, matte-black face wasn’t completely static anymore. As the entity was repeatedly bounced backward, the smooth matte-black face began to ripple. Crude, shifting indentations formed, mimicking the vague expression of pure, seething anger and frustration. The entity was feeling the pain. It was losing its flawless composure.
Inside the Veil, Ray held his breath, his eyes darting to the shimmering boundaries of the runic array. To ensure the Domain of the Void hadn’t breached their sanctuary, he brought his palms together. a sharp, crisp CLAP that rang out clearly in the confined space.
The sound echoed off the interior of the Aetheric Null-Veil, reassuring and sharp. He could hear himself perfectly.
”Good.”
He whispered, the vibration of his own voice grounding him.
Taking the test a step further, he raised his right hand, feeding a tiny sliver of mana into his palm.
“Ignis.”
He cast the cantrip spell: Conjure Flames.
A small, bright orange fire snapped to life over his glove, the quiet crackle of the flames clearly audible within the dome.
Ray breathed a sigh of relief. His tactical gamble had paid off; the Aetheric Null-Veil had successfully deflected the Domain of the Void, keeping his invisible safe spot fully operational and his own magic untouched.
Ray looked back at the soundless skirmish outside.
The dark figure struck. Svane blocked. The dark figure was launched backward. The entity was damaged then corruption would immediately heal the damage. The loop repeated.
Despite successfully isolating the dark figure from his corrupted beast pack and Svane having the upper hand in the exchange, a grim realization settled over both Ray inside the Veil and Svane on the frontlines.
Yes, they were actively gathering combat data. Yes, Svane was definitively winning this duel of attrition.
But the data they were gathering was tactically useless for the people they were trying to protect.
The standard mercenary escorts and the dwarven miners of the Whispering Hills lacked the ability to cast the Retaliation Shield that Ray had used on Svane. Without a Gold Aegis in their ranks, the Vance mercenaries, who escorted the miners are normally a Iron Aegis to at best, a Silver Aegis tier, were woefully outmatched. If they encountered this mysterious dark figure, they would undoubtedly be in fatal danger.
If they were going to make this region genuinely safe, they couldn’t just beat the creature into submission with overwhelming, high-tier magic. They needed to force this dark figure to reveal a fundamental, exploitable weakness, something that a trained soldier could utilize.
Ray deactivated his Conjure Flame, his mind racing. He needed a way to strip away that corrupted healing factor, or this entire skirmish was for nothing.
