Chapter List (352)
The dark figure stood a mere ten feet away, its featureless, matte-black face aimed squarely at Ray’s chest. It was blind to them, separated only by the invisible, silent wall of the Aetheric Null-Veil, yet the sheer density of its presence made the air feel suffocatingly heavy.
Ray didn’t blink. Instead, he drew his consciousness inward, initiating a rapid summit within the Ambient Presence of his mind.
”We need data, the pack of beasts are gone. It is isolated. We hold the element of absolute surprise. I want to test it.”
Ray projected his thoughts to his personas.
Healer: ”Absolutely not, look at the corruption density on that thing! It is a walking nexus of corruption. Engaging something of that magnitude without a being fully prepared of the consequences is tantamount to suicide.”
The World-Weary Healer countered instantly, his voice sharp with clinical dread.
Assassin: ”The Healer is a coward, the target is isolated. Its vanguard has retreated. We possess absolute concealment and the high ground. Tactically, this is the most advantageous strike window we will ever be granted. Slit its throat and be done with it.”
The Stoic Assassin interjected, his tone flat and utterly devoid of emotion.
Commander: ”Intel is the lifeblood of war, we are currently blind to its capabilities and overall combat strength. A calculated skirmish feeds the Tactical Replication Protocol. But hear me well boy, we fight to scout, not to kill. We gather the data, and we must have an exit strategy.”
The Grizzled Commander rumbled, his authoritative voice instantly commanding the space.
Before Ray could agree, a fourth voice slithered into the mental space.
Weaver: ”Boredom is the real plague here, gentlemen! I have been dying of thirst in the dark for weeks! If you are afraid, Ray, then just unchain me for five minutes. Let me drive! I promise I’ll make that black blood sing a magnificent tune!”
The Crimson Weaver declared as he laughed, the sound wet and manic.
A visceral, icy chill ran violently down Ray’s physical spine. He ignored the request of the Crimson Weaver, immediately locking the thought of letting it have full control back into the deepest recesses of his mind.
Ray finalized, his mind snapping back to the physical world.
Ray slowly turned his head to his Vanguard.
”Get ready, Svane. We are engaging the target.”
Svane’s eyes widened in shock. He looked from his Lord to the terrifying entity standing just outside the ward.
”My Lord, I strongly advise against this. We do not know the capabilities of this dark figure. Engaging an unknown anomaly is…”
”Exactly, we do not know its capabilities. We do not fully know its threat level. The quickest way to do that is to engage it in a controlled skirmish. We are not fighting it to the death, Svane. We are fighting it for information. We have the element of surprise, and it is entirely alone.”
Ray interrupted, he activated his innate skill ‘Shared Resolve’ as his voice dropped into the cold, commanding cadence of a commander.
A warm, invisible wave of fortified willpower pulsed from Ray’s core and washed directly over Svane. The spellsword physically straightened as the passive mental boost took hold. The lingering dread of the corrupted dark figure evaporated from his mind, replaced by an ironclad, absolute certainty in his Lord’s directive.
”Understood, my Lord. I will take the frontline. If we are doing this. Although you said that our main goal is to gather information, my engagement will have a goal of eliminating the target. So I am going full blast from the start. I will attempt to neutralize it on the first strike. If I cannot break its guard, I will immediately pivot to a defensive stance so you can observe and gather data.”
Svane said as he took a deep breath, his Gold Aegis discipline locking into place.
”Agreed.”
Ray nodded.
”If I channel my magic inside your array, will the entity detect the mana buildup?”
Svane asked as he tightened his grip on his shield and heavy broad sword.
”No. The Null-Veil is a sponge, whatever you cast inside this dome will not leak. You have complete isolation.”
Ray assured him.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
”Then let us introduce it to a Gold Aegis.”
Svane whispered.
Inside the invisible dome, Svane closed his eyes and opened his internal mana gates. The disciplined training of the Gold Aegis took over. Brilliant blue light flared violently to life around his heavy armor, though the brilliant flash and the thrum of power were entirely muted to the outside world by Ray’s runes.
”Tempus cede!”
Svane incanted, his voice a low, commanding rumble. He cast the 3rd Circle spell: Haste.
A complex, triple-layered spell matrix snapped into existence directly over his heart. The magic violently injected into his bloodstream, instantly supercharging his central nervous system. To Svane, his perception of the world slowed to a crawl, while his heavy, plate-clad muscles coiled with double their normal kinetic potential.
Moving with blinding, newly accelerated speed, he gripped the hilt of his broad sword and dragged his armored gauntlet down the flat of the steel.
”Chalybs arcanum!”
He cast the 2nd Circle spell: Enchanted Blade.
Svane funneled a dense, highly compressed surge of raw mana directly into the weapon. The steel hummed with a vicious, high-frequency vibration, the air around the metal rippling and distorting. The edge of the blade shifted into a blinding, supernaturally sharp line of blue light, capable of slicing through heavily armored beasts like wet parchment.
Outside the Veil, the dark figure remained perfectly still. Its featureless head was tilted slightly, staring blankly at the ‘empty’ space, completely unaware of the massive, lethal kinetic payload arming a few distance from its face.
Svane lowered his stance, perfectly balancing his heavy tower shield and his glowing sword. He looked at Ray and gave a single, sharp nod.
The Aetheric Null-Veil was designed for seamless entry and exit; Svane could pass through its boundary freely without breaking the illusion.
”Wait!”
Ray commanded.
Reaching deep into his core, Ray pulled a surge of Primordial Aether and wove it directly into the matrix of a standard institution defensive magic. He needed to ensure his vanguard was protected before breaking cover.
”Murus primordialis, frange impetum, Scutum!”
Ray chanted, his voice carrying the heavy, undeniable resonance of the ancient magic.
He cast the aether-infused 1st-Circle spell: Shield.
A hyper-dense, highly elastic barrier of golden Aether erupted. Instead of merely locking over Svane’s physical tower shield, the magic rapidly bloomed outward, perfectly encapsulating his entire armored body in a dome of shimmering, volatile kinetic potential, before sinking invisibly into his plate and steel.
Svane’s breath hitched as the magic settled over him. As a Gold Aegis, the 1st-Circle Shield spell was as familiar to him as his own heartbeat, it was the foundational ward of every spellsword in Solhaven, meant to project a flat, directional barrier in a location of the body the spell caster chooses. But the energy currently enveloping his entire form was fundamentally different. The light weight and full-body elasticity of the golden magic felt ancient, thrumming with a raw, terrifying pressure that defied every institutional theorem he had ever been taught.
Shock flickered in the veteran’s Aegis eyes as he wondered what impossible, rule-breaking magic his Lord had just woven. But this was a battlefield, not an academy classroom. Pushing the distracting questions aside, Svane anchored his absolute trust in Ray and tightened his grip on his broad sword.
”Go!”
Ray ordered.
Svane exploded outward.
Stepping through the invisible boundary of the ward, the Gold Aegis literally appeared out of thin air to the outside world. The silence of the ridge shattered. Propelled by the Haste spell and his own body conditioning, Svane moved with blinding, terrifying speed. He crossed the ten-foot gap in a fraction of a second, a sudden blur of blue light and heavy plate.
He launched a devastating downward cleave, bringing the magically enhanced broad sword directly down onto the dark figure’s shoulder.
It was a flawless, undefendable strike.
The blade connected.
But instead of the wet tearing of flesh and the spray of blood, a horrific, deafening CLANG echoed across the ruined valley.
The shockwave of the impact blew the ambient mist backward. Svane’s eyes widened in disbelief. His magically sharpened blade had bitten inches into the entity’s matte-black shoulder, but it had stopped dead. It felt exactly like striking a solid, hyper-dense anvil with a crowbar. The kinetic feedback violently rattled up Svane’s arms, threatening to numb his wrists.
The entity did not possess normal biology. Its corrupted body was a solid mass of hardened stone-form.
Worse, the dark figure did not flinch. It didn’t stagger, and it didn’t cry out in pain.
Slowly, the entity turned its featureless face toward Svane. Moving with a brutal, terrifying lack of hesitation, the dark figure reached up with a bare, matte-black hand and clamped its fingers directly onto the razor-sharp edge of Svane’s glowing sword, trapping the weapon in its shoulder.
With its other hand, the dark figure pulled its fist back and delivered an anvil-like heavy punch straight into the center of Svane’s tower shield.
It expected to shatter the Vanguard’s guard and crush his ribs.
Instead, it struck Ray’s Aether-Infused magic.
The invisible barrier acted like a violently elastic kinetic spring. The exact moment the dark figure’s hyper-dense fist connected, the aether-infused Shield spell absorbed the entirety of the crushing blow, compounded the kinetic energy, and detonated it straight back outward. The barrier didn’t just push the entity; it aggressively reflected the devastating physical force of the punch directly back up the dark figure’s own arm.
With a booming, concussive shockwave, the dark figure was violently launched ten feet backward through the air. The entity’s fingers were forcibly ripped from Svane’s blade, its heavy, dwarven stance completely ruined as its boots tore deep trenches into the dirt upon landing. Its striking arm shuddered visibly, forced to absorb the massive recoil of its own deflected strength.
Behind his tower shield, Svane’s eyes widened in amazement. He instantly realized the true nature of his Lord’s Shield spell, it hadn’t just blocked the strike, it had weaponized the enemy’s momentum, reflecting the physical damage while effortlessly repelling a creature that possessed the mass of a boulder.
A massive surge of confidence flooded the Gold Aegis’s chest, chasing away the lingering doubt of what he thought was a dangerous endeavor. Ray had ordered a calculated skirmish merely to gather intelligence, but as Svane felt the effectiveness and power of his Lord spell thrumming over his armor, his battle instincts flared. They didn’t just have to scout this mysterious enemy. Supported by this caliber of magic, maybe they could defeat it.
Standing perfectly safe inside the invisible boundary of the Veil, Ray’s glowing eyes tracked every micro-movement of the exchange, feeding the priceless data directly into his Tactical Replication Protocol as he readied his next support spell.
