Chapter List (352)
The dark figure was looking in their direction.
The entity had felt it? Is there a leak in projecting an archetype skill down a familiar bond? Had it created a ripple, and this creature was sensitive enough to detect it?
Ray thought as his blood ran cold.
Ray immediately severed the Resonant Skill Projection. Nox’s eyes snapped back to gold.
Deprived of the active signal, the dark figure on the watchtower twitched. It began to look around erratically, like a bloodhound that had suddenly lost a scent trail. Ray let out a slow, tense exhale, thinking they were safe.
Then, the dark figure raised its hands.
Through Nox’s eyes, Ray watched the entity perform somatic actions, but they were entirely alien. Modern mages drew flowing, geometric circles and precise runes. This creature did the exact opposite. Its movements were rigid, entirely composed of harsh angles. It interlaced its dark fingers and began plucking and pulling at the empty air, as if manipulating invisible, heavy strings of raw energy. It was the visceral, forgotten magic of the old world.
The figure paused, holding its hands apart. It slowly turned its head, tracing the invisible line of the mental tether it had just felt.
Its featureless face swept past Nox in the shadows. It tilted its head upward, its gaze climbing the rocky incline, until it stopped and locked perfectly onto Ray’s location behind the invisible Aetheric Null-Veil.
The dark figure slowly opened its mouth.
There was no sound in the physical world. The ruins remained deathly quiet.
But inside Ray’s mind, Nox let out a completely unhinged, terrified shriek. The void-malkin curled into a tight ball in the shadow, his mental voice entirely consumed by panic.
I know that sound! I know that sound! It’s the Vaults! It’s the deep dark of the Vaults! Make it stop!
Nox screamed hysterically through the link.
Hearing the raw, agonizing terror in his familiar’s voice, Ray’s first instinct was to intervene.
System, initiate Partial Immersion: The World-Weary Healer.
He was about to activate the World-Weary Healer’s ‘Calming Presence’ skill and project it down the tether to soothe Nox’ shattered nerves.
Commander: ”Stand down, boy! Do not activate and push that skill!”
The Grizzled Commander barked in the Ambient Presence of his mind.
Healer: ”The Commander is correct, I want to treat the patient as much as you do, but projecting the skill now will only give that anomaly a direct line to our location. You must hold off.”
The World-Weary Healer chimed in immediately, his tone heavy with pragmatic, clinical caution.
Heeding their warnings, Ray forcibly slammed the brakes on the activation, his hand clenching into a tight fist.
The dark figure was still actively tracing their connection. It had just detected the slight aetheric ripple from his Aetheric Purity Assessment. If Ray pushed another archetype skill down the mental tether right now, even a harmless healing one, it would be the equivalent of firing a magical flare directly into the sky. He couldn’t risk giving the entity a solid lock on their position.
He had no choice but to do it the hard way. Ray bypassed using his archetype’s skill and relied purely on the raw, emotional weight of their familiar bond.
Nox, listen to my voice, You are not in the Vaults. You are out here. You are with me. I am right here, and you are safe in the shadows.”
Because it lacked the absolute, magical compulsion of an archetype skill, the mundane reassurance wasn’t an instant cure. However, the steady warmth of Ray’s intent flowing through the bond had at least a grounding effect. It was just enough to pull the void-malkin back from the absolute brink of a total mental break.

Nox stopped thrashing, though he remained curled into a tight, miserable ball, his shadowy frame violently trembling as he continued to whimper in the dark.
Ray gritted his teeth, his eyes cold as he looked down at the ruins. He immediately noted the terrifying connection; the silent frequency tearing through his familiar’s mind was a form of communication used by the dark figure.
Down in the ruins, the pack of mutated beasts simultaneously snapped to attention. As one, the dire wolves, the massive boar, and the silverbacks pivoted perfectly. Driven by the silent command of the dark figure, the pack began to march out of the ruins, heading straight for the rocky incline leading to the ridge.
Svane stepped up beside Ray, his broadsword glowing as he enhanced it with pure mana.
”They are moving on our position. The situation has drastically changed. My Lord, we should retreat while we have the high ground.”
Svane said, his voice hard, assessing their tactical situation as the pack of incoming corrupted beasts moved towards their location.
Ray did not step back. He stood up, deactivating the Familiar Share Sense, both of his eyes glowing with cold, human determination.
”We hold our ground, Svane. Let them come. I want to see if this old magic can pierce my new array.”
Ray said, his voice echoing with unyielding determination.
Svane opened his mouth, his experience and training screaming at him to immediately retreat but as he looked at the determined look of Ray, the words died in his throat.
It wasn’t the reckless bravado of a teenager; it was the anchored, terrifying resolve and belief that what he built could withstand scrutiny.
Svane swallowed his objections with a heavy, internal sigh. He shifted his stance, bringing his glowing broadsword up into a high defensive guard. If the runic array failed, he would have to carve a path through the corrupted pack with brute force.
A moment later, the ambient mist of the ridge parted.
The ground vibrated under the physical weight of the incoming pack. The corrupted beasts crested the incline, their massive silhouettes solidifying into horrifying detail. Up close, the wrongness of their existence was suffocating.
Sweat immediately beaded on Svane’s forehead. Protected only by the invisible dome of the Aetheric Null-Veil, the Gold Aegis got a firsthand look at the pulsing black veins spider-webbed across the animals’ thick muscles. The heavy, oppressive aura rolling off their bodies made the air taste like ozone and rotting copper. Svane realized with a sickening jolt that his Lord had been entirely correct. The beasts were not rotting corpses like the ones in the Sunken Vaults. They were impossibly vital, their muscles bulging with corrupted strength.
The pack milled around the rocky clearing, their massive paws and hooves kicking up dirt just feet from the ward’s boundary.
A towering dire wolf, its fur matted with dark, crystallized aether, stepped dangerously close to the edge of the Null-Veil. It stopped, its massive nostrils flaring as it sniffed the air, its head turning directly toward where Ray and Svane were standing.
Svane stopped breathing. His knuckles turned stark white around the hilt of his sword. He braced for the inevitable roar of discovery.
The dire wolf stared straight ahead. Its crimson eyes slid right past the spellsword and the young noble, focusing entirely on the empty trees behind them. It saw nothing. It smelled nothing. It sensed no mana. The runic array was acting as a perfect, sponge-like void, feeding on the environment while offering absolutely zero signature in return.
Finding nothing of interest on the empty ridge, one of the heavily scarred silverbacks let out a low, rumbling grunt. The pack turned in unison. Driven by their unnatural synergy, they lumbered past the ridge, heading deep into the dense, misty woods of the Whispering Hills.
As the heavy footfalls faded into the distance, Svane let out a long, shaky exhale. He slowly lowered his broadsword, the mana bleeding away from the steel.
He turned to his Lord, bowing his head deeply.
”My Lord... I ask for your forgiveness. To doubt you and your creation was a failure on my part.”
Ray did not respond to the apology. He didn’t even look at Svane. His eyes were still locked on the ruined valley far below.
”Do not relax your guard, Svane. It’s moving.”
Ray warned, his voice incredibly tight.
Svane’s head snapped up feeling confused.
Through his enhanced vision, Ray watched the dark figure standing on the distant ruined watchtower. It did not chant. It did not draw glowing geometric circles in the air like a Solhaven mage. It simply took a single, unnatural step forward.
Ray’s senses registered a microscopic, almost imperceptible blip of aetheric use, a tiny tear in the fabric of the environment, and the dark figure vanished from the tower.
Instantly, it reappeared on the ridge, standing just outside the perimeter of the Aetheric Null-Veil.
Svane flinched backward, his sword instantly snapping back up. It was the first time he had actually laid eyes on this entity, a paralyzing chill ran down his spine.
Even looking directly at the four-foot-tall, stocky humanoid, Svane’s highly trained magical senses screamed that the space was empty. The entity absorbed light and radiated absolutely nothing. It was a walking void. Svane was horrified by his own perceptive inadequacy. To be a Gold Aegis and fail to sense an enemy standing mere yards away was a fatal flaw. If they survived this day, he vowed to subject himself to the most grueling perceptive training.
Outside the invisible dome, the dark figure began to pace.
Its featureless, matte-black head tilted at sharp, jerky angles as it swept the rocky clearing. It was searching. It knew the aetheric ripple it had felt earlier had originated from this exact general vector, but the Aetheric Null-Veil was blinding it.
Slowly, the entity turned. It walked toward the exact center of the ridge, its silent footsteps leaving no imprint in the dirt.
It stopped.
Ray and the dark figure were now a mere ten feet apart. The entity’s featureless face was aimed directly at Ray’s chest. They were standing face to face, separated only by an invisible, silent wall of magic, waiting to see who would blink first.
