Ray needed to know exactly what he was looking at.
System. Initiate Tri-Concurrent Partial Immersion. Layer in: The Serene Cultivator.
The moment the third persona engaged, the immense mental pressure of balancing three distinct archetypal mindsets threatened to crush his focus. But instantly, his innate ‘Cognitive Network’ skill flared to life.
It wasn’t just a passive buffer anymore; it was an advanced neural framework. Ray felt a cool, structural reinforcement slide over his consciousness, actively managing and harmonizing the massive cognitive load, instantly stabilizing the Tri-Concurrent Immersion.
Activate Trait: Resonant Skill Projection.
Ray decided to use his innate skill, drawing upon the Serene Cultivator’s specific diagnostic tool. He activated the Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Purity Assessment’ skill and projected it to Nox.
Down in the ruins, Nox suddenly recoiled. His natural, glowing golden eyes violently shifted colors, flaring with a serene, purifying blue light. The world around the void-malkin instantly warped, shifting from standard sight into a hyper-detailed aetheric spectrum.
Master! What is happening? My vision suddenly changed! Everything is blue and shiny! I didn’t eat any weird mushrooms, I swear!
Nox panicked, his telepathic voice spiking with alarm.
Hold still, Nox. Do not panic, I am just borrowing your vision for a moment. Keep your eyes on the pack.
Ray soothed rapidly through the link.
Nox whimpered but obeyed, keeping his newly blue eyes locked on the beasts.
Through the Aetheric Purity Assessment, Ray finally saw the source of the terrible familiarity. Beneath the beasts’ thick hides, their internal aether channels were choked and tangled with thick, pulsing black veins of corruption. It was the same signature of rot he had witnessed on the twisted, dying monsters deep within the Sunken Vaults.
But this realization only spawned a terrifying paradox.
The Whispering Hills has a high density of Aether. It was dense enough that he believes it could have cleansed the corruption. Any creature infected with Sunken Vault type of corruption should have been violently purged or simply melted away by the environment. Yet, these beasts were walking through the dense mist completely unaffected.
Ray needed deeper data. He had to know how they were surviving.
System Initiate Quad-Concurrent Partial Immersion. Layer in: The World-Weary Healer.
Quad-Concurrent Partial Immersion. The mental weight doubled. A bead of sweat immediately broke out on Ray’s forehead as the Cognitive Network strained to manage the four massive personas operating simultaneously.
He didn’t hesitate. He wove the projected skills together, combining the Gritty Detective’s ‘Observation,’ the Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Purity Assessment,’ and the World-Weary Healer’s ‘Diagnosis’ skills and projected it down the tether.
Nox’s eyes violently shifted again, snapping from serene blue to a clinical, piercing green.
Oh come on, Master! What is this?! I can see their insides! Blood, muscles, and weird pulsing veins! I am a creature of the void, not a butcher!
Nox shrieked mentally.
Ray filtered out Nox’s complaints, his mind racing as he processed the change in what he was seeing.
Within the Ambient Presence of his mind, the active archetypes immediately reacted to the data they got.
Healer: ”This... this contradicts every physiological law, that level of necrotic saturation should have liquefied their internal organs long ago. Look at their vitals. Their cellular regeneration is off the charts. They aren’t dying; they are thriving.”
The World-Weary Healer murmured, his usually tired voice laced with profound clinical shock.
Detective: ”Look at the internal pathways, it isn’t randomly spreading like a wild infection. It’s routed. Woven deliberately into their nervous systems and mana cores. This isn’t the chaotic spread its seems it was intentional”
The Gritty Detective pointed out, his tone sharp and deeply suspicious.
Scholar: ”Fascinating! If the spread is intentional, could it be a completely distinct strain of corruption? A localized variant we have never seen before?”

The Eccentric Scholar chimed in, practically vibrating with academic fervor.
No, the aetheric signature... the malice rolling off their bodies is identical to the twisted creatures in the Sunken Vaults. It is the exact same root corruption. I am certain of it.
Ray countered mentally, gritting his teeth against the mounting cognitive pressure of the Quad-Immersion.
”Then how are they not being violently purged? The Whispering Hills has a high density of ambient aether, in this environment it should have been enough to purge the corruption or east affect them. They should not be able to physically exist in this forest!”
The Eccentric Scholar questioned, genuinely baffled by the paradox.
Ray pushed the Diagnosis skill deeper, forcing the analysis to answer the Scholar’s question. The resulting data shocked him to his core.
The black corruption wasn’t just resisting the cleansing aether; it was integrated perfectly into their biology. It had formed a terrifying symbiotic loop. Instead of being destroyed by the dense aether of the Whispering Hills, the dark veins were acting as a reverse-conduit, actively drinking in the pure environmental energy and converting it into fuel for the beasts’ mutated bodies.
Ray abruptly severed the Resonant Skill Projection and deactivated the Quad-Concurrent Partial Immersion.
His left eye snapped back from gold to its natural human color. Ray let out a sharp gasp, leaning forward and resting his hands on his knees as the heavy mental strain washed over him. He wiped the cold sweat from his brow, his heart pounding against his ribs.
Svane took a step forward, highly alarmed by his Lord’s sudden physical reaction.
”My Lord? What did you see?”
Before answering, Ray reached into his belt pouch with a slightly trembling hand and pulled out another dense ration bar. He tore the wrapper off with his teeth and took a massive, desperate bite.
As he consumed the dense ration bar, the Crimson Weaver’s passive ‘Neural Gastronomy’skill, immediately engaged. The conversion was seamless; the dense, high-caloric intake was instantly broken down and routed directly to his exhausted nervous system. The sharp, throbbing spike in his temples began to cool rapidly, and the mental strain of the Quad-Immersion washed away under the soothing influx of restored cognitive stamina.
With his mind clearing and his breathing finally steadying, Ray looked up at his vanguard, his expression grim. The ’big dark monster’ wasn’t a single apex predator roaming the woods. It was an anomaly that broke the fundamental rules of magical biology.
”It’s corruption, Svane. But it isn’t a disease. It’s not killing them. It has adapted. We are looking at a perfectly healthy, highly sustainable plague.”
Ray as he breathed heavily, his mind still reeling from the diagnostic result.
”A sustainable plague, my Lord? How is that possible?”
Svane said as his brow furrowed in confusion.
The veteran Aegis knew the horrors of the Sunken Vaults intimately. Before Ray had repaired the fraying of the Genesis Crystal, Solhaven Academy’s Silver Aegis company had frequently been tasked with venturing into those dark depths to cull the mutated, rotting creatures, as they try to control their population.
“These corrupted beasts... are thriving? How?!”
”I don’t know. They aren’t feeling the slightest bit of resistance from this environment, as if there is something that is shielding the corruption, that is preventing high density ambient aether from purging it.”
Ray answered as he shook his head, his glowing left eye scanning the pack again.
He abruptly stopped talking.
The Grizzled Commander’s passive ‘Predator’s Intuition’ triggered again this time it was much more intense in his mind.
It wasn’t a warning of something approaching from the distant trees; the hyper-sensory ping was coming from inside the ruined clearing.
Through the Familiar Share Sense, Ray rapidly swept Nox’s ground-level vision across the clearing. The pack of corrupted beasts hadn’t changed position. They were still milling about, docile and unified.
But when Ray looked down with his normal, right eye from their high vantage point, he spotted the anomaly.
Standing atop the crumbled stone of the ruined watchtower, the exact spot Ray had occupied when he pacified the silverbacks, was a dark figure.
System. Activate Concurrent Partial Immersion and layer in: The Gritty Detective.
Ray mentally commanded and he then activated the Gritty Detective’s Observation skill.
He squinted through the mist. The figure was humanoid, but completely devoid of detail. Unlike Nox, whose body was composed of shifting, smoky vantablack, this entity was entirely solid. It looked like a stocky, four-foot-tall boy carved from matte-black stone that swallowed the light around it.
Why was the skill only triggered now?Had the figure been standing there the entire time, perfectly masked, and only just decided to reveal itself?
Ray thought as a cold sense of dread settled in Ray’s stomach.
”Nox, leave the beast pack. Move to the ruined watchtower. Slowly. Keep to the absolute darkest shadows.”
Ray commanded through the mental tether.
Oh, thank the Void.
Nox replied with intense relief, instantly melting away from the terrifying pack of corrupted predators.
Ray kept his right eye locked on the dark figure as Nox seamlessly navigated the debris. When the void-malkin was about fifteen feet from the base of the watchtower, he stopped.
Through Nox’s shared vision, Ray watched the dark figure pacing the top of the ruins. It was examining the stone where Ray had stood, its head tilting in jerky, unnatural motions as it inspected the area.
Ray needed to know what this thing was.
System, initiate Tri-Concurrent Partial Immersion and layer in: The Serene Cultivator.
He then activates the Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Purity Assessment’ skill and projected the skill to Nox via his new innate skill ‘Resonant Skill Projection.’
For the second time, Nox’s eyes flared with a serene, purifying blue light. The void-malkin merely grumbled this time, already used to his master hijacking his eyeballs.
The aetheric spectrum snapped into focus, and Ray’s breath hitched.
The beasts he had examined earlier were only partially corrupted, their dark veins were targeted, acting as biological enhancements. But the dark figure on the watchtower was on a completely different, horrifying level. It was a walking nexus of corruption. The entity registered at nearly ninety percent total corruption, a density so heavy it looked like a black hole in the aetheric spectrum.
Suddenly, the dark figure stopped pacing.
Its featureless head snapped directly toward Nox’s hiding spot.
