The Legendary Method Actor

With the domain’s finances thoroughly settled, the atmosphere in the study shifted. Alistair leaned forward, his expression growing somber and deeply inquisitive.

”Now that the business is taken care of, your mother and I need to know the truth about your health. How were you cured of the Wasting Sickness?”

Alistair said, his voice dropping an octave.

Eileen’s smile faded, replaced by intense, anxious curiosity.

”When you were diagnosed as an infant, we scoured the kingdom for a cure. We begged every meister, every alchemist we could find. We even petitioned the kingdom’s Royal College of Physicians in the capital. They told us there was no cure. They said your condition was an inevitable decay. Yet... looking at you now, there is not a single trace of the sickness left.”

Alistair continued, his eyes distant as he recalled the darkest years of his life.

As Alistair spoke, Ray immediately recalled a conversation he had with Zenus Landa, the man who had visited Solhaven Academy to audit the work he did on the Genesis Crystal Chamber and who had also investigated the Croft family history.

Ray remembered the brutal truth Zenus had uncovered. The Royal College of Physicians hadn’t just failed to cure Ray; they hadn’t even tried. When his father Alistair Croft, a desperate, impoverished countryside Lord, had sent them a letter begging for help, the College had outright denied him, leaving a father and his dying infant in the lurch.

Ray looked closely at his father. Alistair’s face was calm, his voice steady. He had intentionally omitted the College’s cruelty, treating the memory not as an open, bleeding wound, but as distant, accepted history. Alistair had moved on.

Ray felt a profound surge of admiration for his father. It took incredible strength and an iron will to swallow such a vile injustice and not let it consume him. Respecting that strength, Ray chose not to dig up the old wound. Let the sleeping dog lie.

”It was highly unprecedented, Father.”

Ray began, adopting the clinical, precise tone of an Academy scholar. He decided to give them the curated cover story Solhaven had officially released to protect the secrets of his Aetheric core.

”Because of my runic comprehension, I was tapped by the academy administration to be a Special Research Fellow. I was part of an academic elite team studying the Academy’s Genesis Crystal, the core artifact that sustains the academy demi-plane. We discovered that the Crystal was showing signs of microscopic fracture and decay.”

Ray explained smoothly. He then leaned forward, his voice perfectly measured.

”The decay of the Genesis Crystal terrifyingly mirrored the biological decay of my Wasting Sickness. I was part of the team that implemented an experimental stabilizing runic array to fix it. During the procedure, an accident occurred. A localized magical backlash washed over the chamber.”

Ray spread his hands.

”Because my biological signature resonated so closely with the Genesis Crystal’s decay, the stabilizing backlash inadvertently affected my body. It aggressively restructured my cellular baseline, forcibly stabilizing my condition and entirely curing the inborn illness.”

Ray delivered the narrative with such clinical precision, layering the arcane theory with biological terminology, that it sounded like a peer-reviewed research paper.

Alistair slowly nodded, his logical mind easily accepting the explanation. The magical backlash of a very high-tier artifact curing an incurable disease made perfect sense in the unpredictable world of high magic.

Eileen didn’t care about the arcane mechanics. She covered her face with her hands, crying fresh tears of absolute joy.

”The old gods be praised. I am so glad we sent you to the academy, my son.”

Eileen wept softly, wiping her cheeks.

Alistair reached over and squeezed his wife’s hand, a deep, satisfied peace finally settling over his shoulders. The nightmare was truly over. Their son was whole.

”It is a miracle.”

Alistair agreed quietly.

”It was, however, there was one significant byproduct of the cellular restructuring that I should mention.”

Ray nodded. He sat back in his chair, a faint, mysterious smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

Alistair and Eileen looked up, a spike of worry returning to their eyes.

”A byproduct? Is it dangerous?”

Alistair asked carefully.

”Not to me,”

Ray said as he opened his right hand and held it over the center of the desk.

He concentrated, drawing out a little mana and willing it into existence.

Fwoosh.

A bright, beautifully dancing flame conjured to life, hovering an inch above his palm. It cast a warm, flickering orange light across the stunned faces of his parents.

”It seems that the Croft bloodline finally has a mage.”

Ray said, his eyes twinkling through the firelight.

Eileen stared at the fire hovering effortlessly above her son’s palm. She let out a long, slow exhale, her shoulders slumping slightly as she sank back into her chair. A delirious, breathy laugh escaped her lips.

”I think that between the giant Gold Aegis, the mountain of gold crowns, the miraculous curing of both my body and Ray’s incurable disease, and now... magic... I have experienced enough shocks this afternoon to last me three lifetimes. I truly do not think my heart can take another surprise.”

Eileen said, pressing a hand to her forehead,

Alistair let out a booming laugh, the sound echoing richly through the study. While Eileen was overwhelmed, Alistair’s eyes gleamed with a fierce joy as he looked at the flame.

”The Croft line has always been a family of warriors. Generations of knights and foot soldiers. But you, Ray... you have forged an entirely new path. A mage in House Croft.”

Alistair murmured, his mind already racing with the political implications.

Alistair stood up, pacing slightly behind his desk.

”Eldoria is a kingdom built on the foundation of the arcane. Our very ruler, King Julian, cemented his absolute authority not just through lineage, but because he is the ’Scholar King,’ a phenomenally talented mage in his own right. The political capital of having a recognized spellcaster in our bloodline... I can scarcely imagine what this will mean for our future standing in the kingdom.”

Ray smiled, closing his fist and extinguishing the flame. He was happy to let his father dream of political maneuvers. The truth of his Aetheric core was far more complex than simple magic, but for now, letting them believe he was a standard mage was the safest and most stabilizing narrative.

The next two weeks passed in a state of tranquil, productive peace. Ray dedicated his time entirely to letting his family acclimate to the ‘new’ him.

The Keep itself was a hub of constant activity, aided significantly by an unexpected source of labor. Svane, entirely unaccustomed to the quiet life of a peacetime bodyguard, had grown bored within three days. To the absolute awe of the local worker, the towering Gold Aegis had taken to casually carrying massive timber beams and heavy stone blocks on his shoulders, single-handedly accelerating the Keep’s structural repairs by weeks.

At the one-week mark, Rina reported back for duty. She looked refreshed, radiant, and practically vibrating with gratitude.

”The Lord gave us land, young Master! A beautiful plot right beside the Keep. They cleared out a grove of the old Greywood pines, and the foundation for our new house is already being laid. And my younger siblings, they are actually attending the new school in Whisper Town!”

Rina reported eagerly as she served Ray his morning tea.

Ray smiled, taking a sip of the perfectly brewed tea.

”I am glad to hear it, Rina. And your mother and father?”

”That was the biggest surprise of all, Lord Alistair promoted him. Father is essentially his right-hand man now. He is managing the domain logistics and coordinating all the shipments with the Vance Merchant Group. It is a massive responsibility, but he stepped right up to the plate. Mother still continues to help out in the keep although Lady Eileen told her that she does not have to do it anymore. Our family has never been so blessed.”

Rina beamed.

Ray spent the second week working closely with Alistair in the study. With his intelligence and the help of the system and his archetypes, Ray helped his father streamline the domain’s expansion. They drafted efficient tax codes, mapped out agricultural rotation schedules, and established a formalized militia training program. Alistair was continually blown away by his son’s sharp, administrative instincts, treating Ray less like an heir and more like an equal partner.

But as the two-week mark arrived, the tranquil vacation drew to a close.

Ray sat in the lotus position in the center of his newly restored bedroom. The drafty, rotting floorboards were gone, replaced by solid, polished wood. He closed his eyes, slowing his breathing.

Ray’s consciousness shifted, dropping into the familiar, echoing chamber of his Ambient Presence. The council of archetypes was already gathered around the central table.

Detective: ”Alright, kid, vacation is officially over. The parents are happy, the domain is thriving, and your bodyguard is playing carpenter. Now, let’s take care of business and dig into the real reason we came back to this place.”

The Gritty Detective rasped, as he stood leaning against the wall, his trench coat collar popped. He struck a match off his boot, lit a spectral cigarette, and exhaled a cloud of gray smoke.
