The Greykeep Chronicles

The Castellan announced him at a quarter to eight, at breakfast, through the copper pipes, which it almost never does.

”Corvin of Belleren,” its voice said, very faintly, out of the little grate in the kitchen wall by the stove. ”At the east gate. On foot. Carrying a basket.” A pause. ”He has asked whether the lady Melody is at breakfast.”

Melody put down her spoon.

Mary didn’t look up from her book. But her pen stopped moving. And the tip of one of her cat’s ears twitched, very slightly, toward the door.

”Well,” said Helena, at the stove, without turning around. ”Somebody go and let the poor man in. And tell him to wipe his feet.”

* * *

I’d met Prince Corvin of Belleren exactly once before, when I was four, at Mary and Melody’s wedding. I don’t remember it. But my father tells the story every midwinter, along with the one about the thornbush, and it goes like this.

During the war, when Surtr burned the river approach to Belleren and Queen Nerisse came to Greykeep with her sister and three children and fewer guards than anyone liked, her grown nephew came with them. A tall, earnest young man who didn’t know what to do with himself in a castle full of refugees and spent his first week trying to find out what useful things he was allowed to do. Carrying blankets turned out to be one of them. Watching Mary turned out to be another.

He asked her, properly, whether he might court her. She let him. He took her to dinner at a modest table with low flowers so they could see each other. He asked what she liked when she wasn’t organizing everybody’s survival. He was kind, and patient, and very much in love with her.

And Mary, who notices nearly everything, noticed at that dinner that the person she wanted to tell about it afterward was Melody.

So she told him. Properly. And he went white, and then he went red, and then he said, ”Thank you for telling me first,” and asked whether he might be permitted to stay and help with the blankets anyway.

A year later, he came to the wedding. He sat in the second row and cried. He danced with Melody three times. And every midwinter since, Melody has written him a letter, and every midwinter he’s written back. Nobody but Melody has ever read them.

* * *

He was older, now. Of course he was. Gray at the temples, and a little stooped, the way tall men get. But he still had the earnest face my father describes, and he was still, when I opened the east gate for him, standing with his arms full. Not blankets. A basket of pears. Big golden ones, from the Belleren river orchards.

”Garrick Grey,” he said, before I could say anything. He looked delighted. ”You were four. You bit the cake.”

”I’m told I did.”

”You did. I saw it. It was very satisfying.” He held out the basket. ”These are for Melody. Is she...”

He stopped, because Melody had come out of the little kitchen door behind me in her red dwarf boots, with her ears straight up, and walked straight across the court and put both arms around him, basket and all.

”You came,” she said into his coat.

”You wrote,” said Corvin. He looked over her head, at the kitchen door. Mary was standing in it with her black book under her arm. ”Lady Mary.”

”Corvin,” said Mary. She looked at him for a long moment. Then she almost smiled. ”You still carry things.”

”It’s the only useful thing anyone’s ever been sure I can do,” said Corvin.

* * *

He didn’t stay for breakfast. He said he couldn’t, though Helena put a plate in front of him anyway and stood over it until he’d eaten the egg. He’d come, he said, on business. And the business was the kind that couldn’t wait, and couldn’t go in a letter, and couldn’t be said to anyone but my father.

”And Mary,” he added. ”If she’ll come. She’ll want to write it down.”

So by nine o’clock we were in the south solar. My father, by the fire. My mother. Adriana. Mary at the little writing table with her pen already wet. Melody on the window seat with the basket of pears in her lap, peeling one with a little silver knife. Me, because Corvin had asked for me too, and wouldn’t say why until later.

Corvin didn’t sit down. He stood in the middle of the hearthrug, the way he’d stood in the middle of the court twenty years ago with his arms full of blankets, as if he wasn’t quite sure he was allowed to take up room.

Then he reached into his coat and took out a small leather purse, and opened it, and tipped something out onto his palm, and held it out to my father.

A coin.

* * *

It was gold. Heavy, bright, perfectly round. Bigger than any coin I’d ever seen. Bigger than the old Lyradon crowns that Grandpa keeps in a jar in his workshop because they’re the right weight for holding down veneer. It caught the firelight and threw it back across the room like a little sun.

On one face there was a hand. A closed hand. A fist. Stamped deep into the gold, every finger crisp.

On the other face, nothing at all.

It was blank. Polished perfectly smooth, like a mirror, so that when my father turned it over in his fingers, I could see a tiny gold reflection of his own face looking back at him.

Nobody said anything.

”Kethran,” said my father at last. Very quietly.

”Yes,” said Corvin.

”Where did you get it?”

Corvin took a breath.

”From a chest of four thousand of them,” he said. ”Which was left in the forecourt of my aunt’s palace at Belleren, three weeks ago, by a merchant from Orselle. With a note.” He took a folded paper out of his coat and handed it to Mary, not to my father. ”For your roads. That’s all it said. No name. No seal. No asking. Nothing. For your roads.”

Mary unfolded the paper and looked at it. Then she laid it on the writing table beside her book, very carefully, the way she’d lay down something that might bite.

”What did you do?” said my mother.

”Sent it back,” said Corvin. ”The same afternoon. My aunt had it carried down to the river and put on the next barge to Orselle with a note of our own.” He almost smiled. ”No, thank you. Our roads are fine.” Then he stopped smiling. ”But I asked the merchant if I could keep one coin. To show a friend. He said they were all mine, I could keep them all. I said one.” He looked at the gold in my father’s hand. ”That one.”

* * *

”It’s not only Belleren,” said Corvin.

He was looking at the floor now.

”That’s why I came. If it were only us, I’d have written. But it’s not.” He counted on his fingers, the way Mary does. ”Tirrowmarch, to the north of us. Velden, to the south. Amberlay, on the other side of the river. Three courts. Small ones. Smaller than Belleren. The kind of kingdoms that have one road and a mill and a king who mends his own fences.” He looked up. ”All three got a chest. The same autumn. The same note. For your roads.”

”And?” said my father.

”And they kept them,” said Corvin.

The fire popped.

”I don’t blame them,” said Corvin quickly. ”I want to say that. I don’t. They’re poor. Amberlay lost half its men in the war and hasn’t got the other half back yet. Velden’s bridge has been down for six years and they’ve been carrying everything across in boats. Tirrowmarch’s king sold his own horse last winter to buy seed.” He spread his hands. ”And then a chest of gold turns up in the forecourt with a note that says for your roads. And no conditions. Nothing to sign. Nothing to promise. Nobody to say thank you to.” He shook his head. ”Of course they kept it. I’m not sure I wouldn’t have. My aunt’s the one who sent ours back. I’d have been halfway through spending it on the river wall.”

”But,” said my father.

”But,” said Corvin.

He sat down then, at last, on the edge of the nearest chair, as if his knees had decided for him.

”Velden’s new bridge went up in a month,” he said. ”Stone. Beautiful. Better than the old one. And the week it opened, the king of Velden stood up at the river fair in front of his whole town and said...” He stopped. Swallowed. ”He said that it was strange, wasn’t it, how Greykeep had sent a Council and an Accord and a great deal of good advice for twenty years. And a Kethran nobody had ever met had sent a bridge.”

Nobody said anything.

”Tirrowmarch’s king wrote to my aunt,” said Corvin. ”A very polite letter. Asking whether Belleren had heard the story about the lie. The one at the empty rock in the sea. Whether it was true that Greykeep’s Council had voted to deceive Kethra. And whether, if Greykeep would lie to an emperor, it might not lie to a small king who mends his own fences.” He looked at my father. ”He said he was only asking.”

”And Amberlay?”

”Amberlay hasn’t said anything,” said Corvin quietly. ”Amberlay’s just stopped answering my aunt’s letters.”

* * *

My father sat for a long time with the coin in his hand, turning it over and over. Closed hand. Mirror. Closed hand. Mirror. His own face looking back at him out of the blank side, small and gold and frowning.

”May I?” I said.

He held it out.

I took it carefully. I don’t know what I was expecting. The cold, maybe. That long patient leaning I’d felt inside the Orselle fold. The thin black thread that came up out of Kip’s wrist. Something hiding in it, the way the oath had hidden under Eleanor’s plate.

There was nothing.

I held it in my palm and opened everything I keep, all of it, the seeds and the borrowed gifts and Damar’s stone-hearing and the little bit of Aelune I’d kept from the white square at Orselle, and listened to it.

It was gold. Just gold. Heavy and warm from Corvin’s purse and my father’s hand. No oath under the stamp. No thread. No cold. Nothing listening at the other end of it. It was the most ordinary thing I’d held in months.

”There’s nothing in it,” I said.

My father nodded slowly. As if that were what he’d expected. As if it were worse.

”No,” he said. ”There wouldn’t be.”

”Why not?”

”Because he doesn’t need anything in it,” said my father. He took the coin back from me and set it down on the arm of his chair, closed hand up. ”That’s the cleverest thing he’s done yet. Cleverer than the stone. Cleverer than the song.” He looked at the coin. ”There’s nothing in it. No oath. No asking. No hook for Aelune to find. Just gold. And people do all the rest themselves.”

* * *

”It’s Loki’s rule,” I said slowly. ”The third one. Make it something they want to believe. Then they do the work.”

”It’s older than Loki,” said my mother.

Everyone looked at her.

”It’s the oldest thing there is,” she said. She was sitting very straight, with her hands folded. ”When I was a girl, in Valewood, before the war, there was a lord in the next valley who wanted my father’s mill. He never once asked for it. He never threatened. He just sent gifts. Every season. A barrel of wine. A new millstone, when ours cracked. A doctor, when my mother was ill.” She looked at the coin. ”And every season, my father felt a little more that he owed him something. And didn’t know what. And didn’t know how to say no to a man who’d never asked him for anything.” She was quiet for a moment. ”In the end, my father sold him the mill. At a fair price. Nobody made him. He just couldn’t bear owing any longer.”

”A gift with no asking in it,” said Corvin quietly, ”is the most expensive thing in the world.”

My mother turned to look at him.

”My aunt says that,” said Corvin. ”She said it the day the chest came. Before she sent it back.” He looked at the floor. ”I thought she was being old-fashioned.”

* * *

It was Mary who said what it meant. She’d been writing the whole time, very fast, and when she stopped, she put her pen down and folded her hands on top of her book.

”It’s the second asking,” she said.

We looked at her.

”Ansel told us,” said Mary. ”In the summer. In the east-wall nook. He said the first asking is always large. The emperor’s letter. I want her. And the second asking never looks like the first. It’s small. It’s reasonable. It’s made out of your own words.” She tapped the note. ”For your roads. That’s not even an asking. That’s quieter than an asking. It’s a door left open with a light on inside.” She looked at the coin. ”He’s not asking Tirrowmarch or Velden or Amberlay for anything. Not yet. He’s letting them get used to the light.”

”And when he does ask?” said Adriana.

”Then it’ll be very small,” said Mary. ”And very reasonable. And by then they’ll have walked on his bridge for a year.” She picked up her pen again. ”And they’ll find they can’t remember how to say no.”

* * *

My father stood up.

He walked to the long low window over the river and stood looking out at it for a long time, with his hands clasped behind his back. Nobody said anything. Melody had stopped peeling her pear.

”Twenty years,” he said at last, to the window. ”Twenty years we’ve been telling every king in Avarra that they can say no. That’s the whole of it. The Council. The Accord. Rysa’s rules. You can say no.” He turned around. ”And he’s found the one thing you can’t say no to. Because nobody’s asked you anything.”

”So what do we do?” I said.

My father looked at the coin on the arm of his chair. Closed hand up.

”We don’t send gold,” he said. ”We’re not going to try to buy them back. That’s his game, and he’d win it. He’s got more gold than all the kingdoms of Avarra put together.” He came back to the fire. ”And we don’t go to Velden and shout at a man for building a bridge his people needed. He’s not wrong that we never built it.”

”Then what?”

”We find out where it’s coming from,” said my father. ”Not Kethra. We know it’s from Kethra. How. Whose hands it goes through. Who decides which courts get a chest and which don’t. Who carried it to Belleren’s forecourt and called himself a merchant from Orselle.” He looked at me. ”Somebody here is choosing, Garrick. On this side of the sea. Somebody knows which kings are poor, and which bridges are down, and who sold his horse last winter to buy seed. That’s not Kethran knowledge. That’s ours.”

He looked at Corvin.

”That’s why you asked for him,” he said. ”Isn’t it.”

Corvin went red.

”He folds,” he said. ”And his wife... the Princess... she can tell what’s burning. Melody wrote me. Last midwinter. About the sand turning to glass.” He looked at me apologetically. ”I thought, if anyone could follow gold without anybody seeing them do it...”

”You were right,” said my father.

* * *

He didn’t leave until the evening.

He walked in the orchard with Melody all afternoon, talking. I saw them from the east wall, the tall stooped gray man and the small rabbit-eared woman in red boots, walking up and down between the bare apple trees, very slowly, with their heads bent toward each other. At one point, Melody laughed so hard she had to sit down on the bench under the oldest apple tree, the one where Ardith is buried. Corvin stood and waited for her, patiently, the way he waits for everything.

Mary didn’t go with them. She stayed at her desk. But she left the window of her office open, the one that looks over the orchard, all afternoon, even though it was cold. And she didn’t write anything for a long time.

At the east gate, at dusk, when he was leaving, Corvin turned around and looked at Mary, who’d come down to see him off.

”You told me once,” he said. ”When I first came. That I should find out what useful things I was permitted to do.”

”I remember.”

”I’ve been trying,” said Corvin. ”For twenty years.” He smiled. ”I thought this might be one.”

Mary looked at him for a long moment.

Then she did something I’ve never seen her do with anyone except Melody and my father. She stepped forward and put her hand flat on his chest, over his heart, very briefly. The way Melody taught the gate keepers to put their hands on the plates.

”It was,” she said. ”Thank you for coming first.”

* * *

Mary wrote it that night.

Corvin of Belleren came on foot with pears. Kethran gold in three minor courts: Tirrowmarch, Velden, Amberlay. Four thousand coins a chest. Closed hand on one face. The other blank; you see your own face in it. Note: For your roads. No asking. Belleren sent theirs back.

Velden built a bridge. Tirrowmarch asks about the lie. Amberlay has stopped answering.

Nothing in the coin. That is the point.

Evelyn: her father sold the mill because he couldn’t bear owing. Queen Nerisse: a gift with no asking in it is the most expensive thing in the world.

Garrick and Seraphina to follow the gold. Somebody on this side is choosing.

And under that, in very small writing, not in Mary’s hand but in Melody’s, because Melody had come up after supper and asked for the pen, which she almost never does:

He still carries things. Weather fair.

The coin is in the top drawer of Mary’s desk now, closed hand up. She says she keeps it that way so nobody has to look at their own face in it.
