The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 25: Accelerated Timelines

The morning light was soft, filtering through the rice-paper screens of the Beifong guest chamber. It fell across the bed in pale, gentle stripes, illuminating dust motes dancing in the still air.

Zuko lay on his back, one arm tucked beneath his head, the other draped over Katara’s sleeping form curled against his side. Her hair was a dark spill across his chest, her breathing deep and even. In the quiet intimacy of dawn, she looked peaceful. Unburdened.

He was not.

His mind was a storm of calculations, warnings, and reshuffled priorities. Yogan’s voice echoed in his memory, stripped of all serenity, urgent with a dread that felt older than stone.

‘Mun Lao. Vumala. A vessel. A child. A timeline shattered.’

And black fire. Vaatu’s breath in the hands of a Fire Lord.

Zuko’s eyes traced the grain of the wooden ceiling. The plan he’d been carefully constructing, the slow cultivation of power, the patient gathering of tools and allies, was now a luxury he could no longer afford. The game had changed. The board was tilting, and ancient pieces were moving in the open.

‘Two days.’

He had two days in Gaoling. Not to play the diplomat, not to gently coax Toph Beifong out of her gilded cage. He had to shatter the cage and take her with him. The raw, seismic power sleeping beneath this estate was no longer just an asset. It was a necessity. If Mun Lao was as formidable as Yogan claimed, a master of fire from the Age of Lion Turtles, then facing him with conventional power was suicide. Zuko needed the unconventional. He needed the earth itself as a weapon, wielded by a prodigy who didn’t even know she was holding it.

And then, the Lion Turtle.

The journey to the Unending Gyre was no longer a scholarly pilgrimage for power. It was a desperate sprint for a weapon capable of rewriting the rules of bending itself. If Vaatu’s influence was loose in the world, and Vumala’s herald was hunting for a womb to birth a god, then half-measures and political maneuvering were worthless.

He had to become more. Faster.

Katara stirred against him, a soft sigh escaping her lips. Her hand slid across his stomach, seeking warmth even in sleep. The trust in that motion, the unguarded intimacy of it, sent a sharp, complicated pang through him. He had bound her to him with lies and manipulations, and she had responded with a loyalty that felt, in moments like this, terrifyingly real.

He pushed the feeling down. Sentiment was a distraction he could not afford. Not now.

Carefully, he extricated himself from her hold, slipping from the bed without waking her. He dressed quietly in the simple Earth Kingdom robes of Lord Lee, the fabric feeling like a costume that had grown too tight. The face in the polished bronze mirror was Prince Zuko’s, but the eyes staring back were Victor Krane’s, hard, focused, racing against a clock only he could hear.

‘Two days. Secure Toph. Return to Garsai. Set sail. Find the Lion Turtle.’

The list was simple. The execution would be anything but.

---

The air in Gaoling’s lower market district was thick with the scent of baking bread, forge smoke, and the rich, loamy smell of earth. It was a working town, awake and busy well before the nobles in their hilltop estate had sipped their first tea.

In a small, rented room above a potter’s workshop, Ensign Lee was trying very hard to focus on the logistical report in front of him. The parchment detailed supply routes, local guard rotations, and gossip from the caravan masters, all vital intelligence for maintaining Lord Lee’s cover and planning their next move.

He couldn’t concentrate.

His fingers tapped a nervous rhythm on the table. His eyes kept drifting to the door.

She was late.

Or perhaps she wasn’t coming at all. The thought, paranoid and persistent, had gnawed at him since they’d arrived in Gaoling. Their marriage on Kyoshi had been a political transaction, a cold piece of Prince Zuko’s grand design. Hinaro, a fierce Kyoshi Warrior with a glare that could cut stone, had made her disdain perfectly clear. She’d fought the union, fought him, right up until the ceremony.

Then, everything changed in Nan Hai.

The memory was a fractured, vivid thing: the chaos of battle, the searing pain of a wound he was sure would be his last, the blurred world narrowing to her face above his. She’d dragged him from the fray, her hands steady even as her voice shook with fury. Later, in the frantic, raw aftermath where survival felt like a miracle, they had come together not as political partners, but as two people who had nearly lost everything. It had been desperate, intense, and it had rewritten something between them.

For a few brief days after, there had been a truce. A tentative, bewildered closeness. He’d seen her without the armor, both physical and emotional. She’d seen him without the officious, nervous facade of the ensign.

Then Prince Zuko had sent her away.

A mission. Infiltrate a Fire Nation coastal base loyal to Azula. Play the turncoat. Gather information. It was dangerous work, the kind where a single slip meant a slow death. They’d exchanged a dozen hawk messages since, her words always cautious, coded, and frustratingly brief. His own replies felt hopelessly inadequate.

And now, a month later, she was here. In Gaoling. Summoned by the Prince’s network for a debrief.

The door opened.

Lee shot to his feet so fast his chair screeched back.

Hinaro stood in the doorway, backlit by the hall’s lamplight. She was not in her Kyoshi armor. She wore the practical, drab trousers and tunic of an Earth Kingdom traveler, her hair tied back in a simple, severe knot. Dust coated her boots. She looked tired, her sharp features drawn, but her dark eyes were as alert and penetrating as ever.

They stared at each other across the small room. The silence was a chasm filled with a month of uncertainty, danger, and unspoken words.

“You’re here,” Lee said, the words stupid and obvious.

“I am,” Hinaro replied, her voice flat. She stepped inside and closed the door, the click of the latch sounding final. Her gaze swept the room, the instinct of a spy checking for threats, before settling back on him. “You look like you haven’t slept.”

“I’ve been… preoccupied. With the mission. The Prince’s… agenda.” He gestured weakly at the papers. “How was your journey?”

“Long. Uneventful. The Fire Nation base is complacent. Arrogant. It made slipping information out easier.” She didn’t move further into the room, leaning against the doorframe as if ready to bolt. “The Prince’s plan proceeds?”

“It… accelerates,” Lee said, remembering the grim intensity he’d seen in Zuko’s eyes lately. “Things have changed. The objectives are more urgent.”

Hinaro nodded slowly, absorbing that. Her eyes never left his face. “And you? Are you… well?”

It was a simple question, but it carried the weight of the battlefield, of the dark hours after Nan Hai when “well” had meant alive, breathing, together.

“I am,” he said, then honesty compelled him to add, “Worried. About the scale of this. About… you.”

Something flickered in her eyes, a crack in the professional detachment. She pushed off the doorframe and took a few steps into the room. The distance between them shrank from paces to an arm’s length.

“I can handle myself, Lee.”

“I know,” he said quickly. “I didn’t mean… I just…” He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated with his own clumsiness. “The messages were sparse. It was hard not to imagine the worst.”

A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched her lips. It was gone in a heartbeat. “Imagining the worst is a luxury for people behind desks. For those of us in the field, it’s a distraction.”

“Is that what I am?” he asked, the question slipping out before he could stop it. “A distraction?”

She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she looked at him, really looked, as if reassessing a tactical problem. The tension in the room shifted, growing thicker, more personal.

“In Nan Hai,” she said quietly, “you were a liability. A wounded man I was ordered to protect.” She took another step closer. The scent of her, travel dust, leather, and a faint hint of jasmine soap, Wreached him. “After Nan Hai, you became… complicated.”

Lee’s heart hammered against his ribs. “And now?”

“Now,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper meant only for the space between them, “I have spent a month in a nest of firebenders who would skin me alive if they knew who I was. I have lied in every breath, trusted no one, and slept with a knife in my hand.” Her gaze held his, fierce and unguarded. “And the only thought that did not feel like a distraction… was wondering if you were safe.”

The last thread of his composure snapped. He closed the remaining distance, his hands coming up to cup her face. Her skin was warm, a little rough from wind and sun. She didn’t pull away.

“I missed you,” he breathed, the confession feeling both terrifying and utterly right.

Her hands came up, not to push him away, but to grip the front of his tunic, anchoring him to her. “This is a terrible idea,” she murmured, her breath ghosting over his lips. “We have duties. Reports. A prince who expects efficiency.”

“The Prince,” Lee said, leaning his forehead against hers, “can wait five minutes.”

This time, her smile stayed. It was small, tired, and real. “Five minutes,” she agreed, and pulled him down into a kiss that held a month of silence, danger, and a fragile, stubborn thing that looked, against all odds, like the beginning of a promise.

Outside, the town of Gaoling bustled on, oblivious to the ancient threats stirring in the shadows, to the prince plotting in a mansion on the hill, and to the two spies in a dusty room above a potter’s shop, stealing a moment of peace before the storm broke.
