The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 55: The Flames Between Us

The corridor leading to the throne room was long, silent, and suffocating in its grandeur. The elite Imperial Firebender led Zuko in silence, his white mask offering no expression, no hint of urgency, but his pace was swift. Measured. Purposeful.

Zuko said nothing.

The tension in his chest didn’t come from fear. It came from anticipation. He knew something was coming, he had even counted on it.

And now… the game was in motion.

The tall double doors loomed before them, gilded in dragon motifs, flanked by silent guards who did not meet Zuko’s eyes. As they creaked open, heat washed over him like a wave.

He stepped into the throne room.

The flames roared in their eternal pit, rising like serpents between him and the obsidian throne.

And there, seated in shadow and flame, was Fire Lord Ozai.

He sat tall, his silhouette distorted by the wall of fire, like some ancient god drawn in smoke and hatred. His arms rested calmly on the sides of his throne, but the flicker of white-hot fire crawling up the stone betrayed the storm beneath his skin.

Just outside the ring of flame stood Azula, her arms folded behind her back, smirking as if the entire palace was in on a joke Zuko hadn’t heard yet.

Her presence alone confirmed what Zuko had already suspected.

He didn’t let it show.

Other Fire Nation guards and royal servants bustled quietly in the background, laying trays of roasted meats and fruit on lacquered tables, preparing the Fire Lord’s morning meal. They were silent, dutiful, half ghost, half function.

Zuko approached until he stood just outside the wall of flame, the heat licking at his face.

“You summoned me, Father?” he asked.

Ozai didn’t rise.

“All of you. Leave us,” the Fire Lord commanded, voice booming like a hammer against the walls.

At once, the servants bowed and hurried out. The guards followed in disciplined unison. The massive doors slammed shut behind them with a low thud, sealing the chamber, and its tension, shut.

Only three remained.

Father.

Daughter.

Son.

The flames crackled louder in the silence.

“Explain yourself, Prince Zuko,” Ozai said, his tone sharp enough to cut.

Zuko blinked once, his face twisting into a mask of practiced confusion.

“Explain myself… with what?”

His voice was smooth, innocent. But underneath it, the gears were turning.

Ozai rose slightly, just enough for the flames to react. They surged upward, rising high, hot enough to sting skin from meters away. Zuko had to instinctively step back as a wall of blistering heat forced him away.

Azula stepped back too, frowning at the sudden intensity.

“Do you think me a fool, Zuko?” Ozai barked.

Zuko recovered his posture. He glanced sideways at Azula.

She was still smirking.

That same knowing smirk.

That told him everything.

The mask dropped from his face like falling ash. The innocent look vanished, replaced by cool resolve.

He stepped forward again, back to where the fire licked closest, and stared directly into his father’s blazing eyes.

“We talked about this the other day in the garden, Father,” Zuko said.

Ozai’s face darkened. “And I told you not to even think about it.”

Azula’s head snapped to look between them.

“Think about what?” she asked, stepping forward. “What are you two talking about?”

“Stay out of this, Azula,” Zuko said sharply.

She raised an eyebrow. “I am part of this family, brother.”

Ozai’s flames surged again, turning from molten orange to searing white, rising even higher.

“I warned you,” Ozai thundered, “never to think of it again.”

Zuko didn’t flinch.

“I need you to understand,” he said calmly, “I’m doing this for your legacy, Father. For our legacy. The Fire Nation’s legacy.”

“Our legacy is secured,” Ozai snapped, his voice rumbling like an earthquake. “We have the Avatar. We are close to ending this war. We do not need other methods to ensure power.”

Azula’s flames erupted around her, turning blue in an instant as her temper surged.

“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on!?”

Before either man could answer, another voice echoed through the chamber:

“I would also like to know what you are talking about.”

All three turned.

The flames hissed, not as if they were disturbed, but as if they recognized the voice.

A figure walked slowly through the shadows at the back of the room, hands folded into the long sleeves of his robe. He moved with the ease of someone who belonged in every room he entered, regardless of who ruled it.

Iroh.

Ozai didn’t rise. But his voice lost some of its fury, replaced with cold acknowledgment.

“Brother.”

Zuko and Azula both straightened.

“Uncle,” they said in near unison.

Iroh stopped just shy of the throne’s flame ring and gave a respectful bow.

“I think it fitting that you all include me in this,” he said, his voice calm. “I am of royal blood as well.”

His eyes shifted toward Zuko, then back to Ozai.

“If this is about last night,” he added, “I believe I, too, would like to hear the details.”

The flames crackled. No one moved.

For the first time in the Fire Nation throne room, silence fell like thunder.

The air itself seemed to hold its breath.

The fire settled.

Only slightly, but enough for the haze to clear and the tension to crystallize.

Ozai remained standing behind the ring of flames, arms folded, face unreadable. Iroh moved to one side of the room, his hands still calmly tucked into his sleeves, eyes half-lidded in quiet observation.

Azula shifted on her feet, her arms folded tightly, but the blue embers licking at her fingers betrayed her impatience.

Ozai’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.

“Would you like me to explain it, Zuko,” he said, “or would you prefer the honor?”

Zuko’s expression didn’t change, though the corner of his mouth twitched with amusement.

“I’ll explain it.”

He turned from the flame wall and looked first to Iroh, then Azula.

“Are either of you familiar with Xu Ping An?”

Iroh raised an eyebrow, interest immediately piqued. “The true master of lightning?”

Azula scoffed, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “That crazy old fool from the era of Avatar Kyoshi?”

Zuko smiled faintly. “Very good.”

He stepped slightly closer to the flames, letting the heat press against his chest like a dare.

“And do you know the last three Fire Nation Avatars?” he asked, his tone suddenly more academic than aggressive.

“Of course,” Iroh replied, nodding. “The most recent was Roku.”

“The firebender before him was Szeto,” Ozai added dryly.

“If memory serves,” Iroh said, glancing to the ceiling in thought, “the one before that… was Avatar Turo. Also known as Fire Lord Turo.”

Zuko gave a single, sharp nod.

“Correct.”

Azula sighed, clearly agitated. “What does any of this have to do with what we’re actually talking about? Are you going to explain, or keep quizzing us on history like a dull old sage?”

Zuko didn’t respond to her. Not directly.

Instead, he stepped forward, just enough that the firelight lit half his face in gold and shadow.

“What Father and I were arguing about… was a policy.”

Azula frowned. “A policy?”

Zuko’s voice dropped a fraction.

“A policy that Fire Lord Turo created. A policy that helped produce a bender as powerful as Xu Ping An.”

The room fell still.

Even Azula’s flames dulled for a moment.

Ozai’s jaw tightened, and Iroh’s brow furrowed, not in disapproval, but in realization.

Zuko let the silence linger for just a second longer.

And then, without another word, he turned to face the fire directly again.
