The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The Hollow’s contact to Daren had been detailed.

That was the first thing Axel understood as Daren laid it out across the war room table the specific, deliberate detail of a communication that had not been purely operational but had also been designed to motivate. The Hollow’s leadership had told Daren things they didn’t need to tell him for the information request they were making. They had told him the ritual’s abandonment. The Guild’s modified brief. The new strategy’s timeline and its specific targets.

They had told him about Reyna’s elimination as a primary objective with the particular emphasis that communicated this is decided and cannot be changed, which was the specific language of people who wanted their audience to understand that resistance was futile.

They had, Axel understood, been trying to recruit Daren back.

The detailed contact was not information sharing. It was a demonstration of the Hollow’s continued capability and intention look what we know, look what we’re doing, look how inevitable this is. Come back to the side that’s going to win.

Daren had not come back to their side.

He had come here.

Axel looked at the contact’s full account across the war room table and thought about what it contained and what it meant. He thought about it with Daren sitting across from him in the chair that the Beta had occupied for twelve years before the eastern checkpoint log showed a truck clearing the gate at 3:47 in the morning.

The chair felt different with Daren in it.

Not wrong. Not right either. Just different carrying the weight of twelve weeks of absence alongside the fourteen years before them, both present, neither canceling the other.

Reyna came in at the two-hour mark.

Axel had told her through the bond before she arrived the specific directed impression that communicated Daren’s return and the new intelligence and the need for her in the war room without the radio communication that would have reached other ears before he was ready for other ears to know. She had received it and she had given herself twenty minutes before coming in, which was the correct timing enough for Daren to have given the full contact account without the additional complexity of her presence in the room, and soon enough that the response planning could include her from the beginning.

She came in and she stopped inside the door and she looked at Daren across the table.

Daren looked at her.

It was the first time they had been in the same room. The full, direct encounter that the packhouse’s spatial management had made possible to avoid for the entire duration of her time here. Axel watched them look at each other and he thought about what each of them was to the other. Daren to Reyna as the Beta whose grief had produced the most direct operational damage to her safety, Reyna to Daren as the person whose presence had been the mechanism of the grief.

The look lasted approximately four seconds.

Then Reyna sat down at the table’s end not Daren’s side, not the end opposite him, but the perpendicular position that was neither aligned nor opposed.

”Tell me about the Guild’s modified brief,” she said.

Not to Axel. To Daren.

Daren looked at her for a moment. Then he told her the same account he had given Axel, but compressed, the essential operational content without the context that Axel had needed and that Reyna already had. She listened with the focused attention she brought to intelligence, and she asked two questions, and both questions were precise and revealed the specific gaps in the Hollow’s account that she had identified as significant and wanted filled.

Daren answered both questions.

When he finished she nodded once and looked at Axel. ”The Guild’s modification removes the delivery constraint. Twelve operatives designed for extraction reconfigure for elimination, the approach vector changes, the team composition changes, the containment equipment is no longer required and is replaced by what they use for category seven elimination operations.” She looked at the table. ”What they use for category seven elimination operations is considerably simpler than the delivery equipment. Simpler means faster. Faster means the approach timeline compresses.” She met Axel’s eyes. ”They move within forty eight hours of receiving the modified brief. Possibly twenty four.”

”The Hollow’s contact was three days ago,” Axel said.

”Which means the Guild already has the modified brief,” Reyna said. ”They’re already reconfiguring.”

”Which means we have hours, not days,” he said.

She nodded.

He looked at Daren. ”The secondary monitoring function in the communication channel. Can you access it now and tell me if the Guild has responded to the brief modification.”

”Yes,” Daren said.

Axel stood up and went to the door. ”Petra,” he called.

She appeared from the corridor, she had been close enough to hear the war room’s activity level and had positioned herself in the way she always positioned herself when she assessed that something significant was in motion. She looked into the room, registered Daren at the table without any visible reaction to his presence, and looked at Axel.

”Full senior circle in twenty minutes,” he said. ”And I need Sable.”

She moved.

He came back into the room. He stood at the head of the table and looked at the three people around it. Reyna at the perpendicular end with her intelligence mind already running the counter response, Daren across from the position he had occupied for fourteen years with the specific weight of a man sitting in a chair he wasn’t sure he still had the right to.

”The channel access,” he said to Daren. ”Now. Before the senior circle arrives.”

Daren produced a phone not his regular device, a secondary one, the kind of operational security that the Beta’s meticulous competence had always extended to the things he didn’t want cross contaminated with his primary communications. He navigated to the secondary monitoring function with the specific practiced ease of someone who had built the vulnerability deliberately and had been carrying it for twelve weeks as the piece of what he had done that he hadn’t been willing to fully destroy.

He set the phone on the table.

The channel’s secondary monitoring layer showed the Guild’s response to the brief modification. Timestamp: thirty one hours ago. Three sentences, the specific compressed professionalism of people who communicated operationally rather than verbally.

Modification received. Brief updated. Operational posture adjusted for primary vector approach.

Axel read it. He looked at the timestamp. ”Thirty one hours ago.”

”Yes,” Daren said.

”They’ve been reconfigured for thirty-one hours,” Reyna said. She looked at the phone. ”They’re already in approach position. The reconfiguration doesn’t take forty eight hours it takes the time required to swap the containment equipment for the elimination equipment and adjust the team’s formation approach. Twelve operatives, one modification, thirty one hours.” She looked at Axel. ”They’re coming tonight.”

The war room absorbed that.

Axel thought about tonight. About twelve Guild operatives reconfigured for elimination rather than extraction, moving without the delivery constraint’s complexity, using the approach vector the scout had mapped and the northern boundary’s gap that had been closed but not closed long enough to have lost the Guild’s documentation of its original location.

He thought about what tonight required.

He thought about the Warden field at nine meters and the Blood Apex’s active projection and the pack sense and the Convergence’s full single system capability and what twelve operatives running an elimination brief would encounter when they arrived inside the radius of something they had been briefed was a territorial marking function.

He thought about Daren across the table.

About the channel access and the information that had come through it and the twelve weeks and the truck at 3:47 in the morning and the forty minute window and Otto Reld’s name.

About what was still possible and what wasn’t.

”Tonight,” he said. ”We prepare for tonight.” He looked at the table at Reyna and Daren, the specific complicated configuration of two people who were both present in this room for specific reasons that had cost specific things. ”Daren.” Daren looked at him. ”The channel. Can you use the primary communication layer to send a message to the Hollow that appears to be the routine intelligence update they were requesting when they made contact three days ago?”

Daren understood what he was being asked. He understood it in approximately two seconds the specific speed of someone whose operational intelligence had not atrophied in twelve weeks regardless of everything else. ”You want them to believe their communication channel is still functional and that I’m still providing information.”

”I want them to receive information that tells them the Warden field’s range has been reduced,” Axel said. ”That the Convergence’s development has produced instability rather than the stabilization we’ve documented. That the proximity protocol has been relaxed to under five meters rather than nine.” He held Daren’s gaze. ”I want the Guild to receive an updated brief from the Hollow that adjusts their approach vector based on intelligence that puts them inside the actual nine-meter radius without knowing they’re inside it.”

Daren was very still.

”You’re using the channel I built,” he said.

”I’m using the channel you built to close the gap you opened,” Axel said. He said it without cruelty as fact. ”Can you do it.”

Daren looked at the phone on the table.

He looked at Axel.

”Yes,” he said. ”I can do it.”

”Then do it,” Axel said. ”And then stay in this room until the senior circle arrives. Because I need to know everything the Hollow told you in that contact and everything you know about their current operational structure from the twelve weeks you spent inside it, and I need it in the next twenty minutes.”

Reyna looked at Axel across the table with the deep-water eyes. He met her gaze briefly the specific exchange of two people in a bond that communicated without words, running the same assessment from different angles and arriving at the same conclusion.

Tonight.

The Warden field at nine meters.

The Convergence at full deployment.

And a channel built by a grieving Beta, repurposed by an Alpha who had decided that the material available was sufficient for the response required.

Outside the packhouse the forest stood in the afternoon light.

Somewhere in the territory twelve Guild operatives were checking their equipment and adjusting their formation for an approach they would begin in a matter of hours, toward targets they had comprehensively mischaracterized, using intelligence that was about to be updated with precisely the wrong information.

Axel looked at the war room’s map.

He began to plan.
