TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

For three days after the beast tide, Greyspine seemed reluctant to release them.

The caravan continued through valleys where mountains crowded both sides of the road, their slopes dark with pine and broken by long ribs of gray stone. Smaller ridges hid larger ones behind them, so that every time Joe thought the land ahead must finally open, another wall of forest and rock appeared beyond the next bend.

The travelers were quieter now.

Nobody wandered far from the wagons.

Followers who had once stretched casually along the road walked in tighter groups, and when one of the guards shouted for someone to close a gap, nobody argued.

The mountains themselves did not become less dangerous.

Human presence simply began increasing.

Joe noticed it first in small things.

A repaired bridge.

Fresh wheel marks from traffic traveling in both directions.

A roadside shelter roofed with tile rather than rough timber.

Then came mounted patrols.

The first passed them heading west—uniformed men riding at an easy pace, glancing over the caravan before continuing toward Greyspine.

Another appeared the following morning.

Then another that afternoon.

No single patrol was particularly impressive.

The frequency was.

Blackwood protected the roads immediately around the town because that was what its manpower allowed.

Ashbourne apparently pushed security outward until even the approaches to the capital became part of a managed system.

Joe watched the next patrol disappear behind them.

Individual strength mattered.

Organization multiplied it.

-----------

The mountains gradually spread apart.

Forest gave way to cultivated slopes.

Terraced fields appeared first, then broader farmland across the valley floors. Villages grew closer together, and the spaces between them became occupied by orchards, mills, animal yards and workshops.

The caravan no longer felt alone on the road.

Farmers moved produce toward larger markets.

Merchant carts passed west.

Twice they encountered wagons loaded with manufactured goods traveling toward Stonegate.

Then Joe saw the first uninterrupted line of utility poles.

They followed the road east.

Wooden poles stood at regular intervals, carrying dark wires from one settlement to the next until distance made them disappear.

The wires did not belong to one property.

They continued for miles.

Infrastructure.

Joe leaned against the side of the passenger wagon and watched the poles pass.

The closer they came to Ashbourne, the more expensive things stopped being possessions and became systems.

---------

By the fifteenth day of the journey, traffic became frustrating.

The road widened.

Travel slowed anyway.

Side roads kept feeding into it.

Animal carts joined from villages. Produce wagons entered from farms. Riders squeezed through gaps between larger vehicles, while merchants traveling west forced both streams to negotiate around one another.

Then came the engines.

Joe heard the first one before he saw it.

A boxy freight truck approached from behind, rattling loudly enough that several horses turned their heads.

Its paint had faded. One side bore a dent large enough that Joe wondered what it had hit.

The caravan edged over.

The truck passed.

Smoke trailed behind it.

One follower cursed and covered his nose.

Less than an hour later, another vehicle came from the opposite direction.

Then a bus.

It was broad, squared at the front and packed tightly enough that passengers filled nearly every visible seat. Bundled luggage had been tied across part of the roof.

It slowed while passing the caravan.

A child inside pressed his face to the glass and stared at the wagons.

Joe looked back.

He almost laughed.

To the child, perhaps the caravan belonged to the backward part of the world.

Both views were probably correct.

----------

The land opened fully on the seventeenth afternoon.

Their road climbed one final broad ridge before beginning a long descent.

The caravan slowed near the top.

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

People began looking ahead.

Joe did too.

For several seconds, he couldn’t find Ashbourne City.

He had expected something obvious.

Stonegate had appeared as walls, towers and gates rising from the countryside.

Ashbourne had no such boundary.

Below them lay an enormous basin filled with farms, roads, houses, workshops, warehouses and settlements.

Nearer slopes remained mostly agricultural. Irrigation channels divided fields into neat bands, and groves of trees surrounded scattered estates.

Farther down, buildings thickened.

One settlement merged into another.

Workshops appeared between houses.

Storage yards appeared beside workshops.

Then the gaps became too small to distinguish separate communities at all.

And the construction continued.

Miles farther.

Joe narrowed his eyes.

The dense mass filling the eastern basin wasn’t a collection of towns surrounding the capital.

That was the capital.

Or part of it.

Roads ran across the landscape like pale threads, several wide enough that he could see moving traffic from the ridge.

Smoke rose from industrial districts.

Sunlight reflected from glass.

Dense neighborhoods formed blocks of gray, brick and brown.

In one direction, buildings rose higher and packed much closer together.

Elsewhere, roofs remained lower, separated by trees and enclosed courtyards.

Far beyond everything else, where the ground rose gently northward, larger properties seemed to occupy enormous amounts of land.

The city did not sit inside the basin.

It had spread across it.

Someone behind Joe asked, “Is that Ashbourne?”

The driver glanced back.

“The outskirts.”

Joe looked again.

They were still several hours away from the caravan yard.

For the first time since leaving Blackwood, distance itself became difficult to judge.

----------

Their descent passed through farmland for nearly another hour.

Then businesses began appearing beside the road.

Repair yards first.

A blacksmithing compound large enough to employ dozens of people.

Timber depots.

Feed warehouses.

A brickworks whose kilns stained the air with smoke.

The settlements between them grew denser until Joe stopped noticing where one ended and another began.

He kept waiting for some formal marker announcing entry into Ashbourne City.

None came.

There was a transport checkpoint, but even that stood beside an open road rather than beneath a gate.

Freight papers were inspected.

Caravan records were stamped.

A clerk counted wagons.

Then they were waved onward.

Joe looked back after they passed.

That was apparently it.

Stonegate said, You are outside. Now you are inside.

Ashbourne seemed to say, You should have noticed sooner.

----------

The road changed beneath the wheels.

Packed stone became cement.

The improvement was immediately noticeable.

The wagon stopped bouncing over every shallow rut.

Drainage channels ran along both sides.

Utility poles stood closer together now, their wires branching toward streets and buildings.

Some intersections had lamps mounted above them.

Joe began seeing automobiles often enough that he stopped turning toward each engine.

They remained a minority.

Animal transport was everywhere.

An ox cart blocked a delivery truck at one intersection.

A dark automobile sounded its horn behind both.

A man pushing a handcart squeezed between them while a bicyclist somehow found enough room to pass everyone.

Nobody seemed surprised.

The city had simply learned to accommodate several eras at once.

Joe understood that better than a clean division between old and new.

Technology did not arrive everywhere together.

Money arrived first.

Infrastructure followed where money accumulated.

----------

The smell of the road changed as much as the buildings.

Forest disappeared entirely.

Ashbourne smelled of smoke, cooking oil, horses, hot metal, wet cement, spices, sewage, bread, medicinal herbs and too many people sharing the same space.

Joe heard hammering from workshops.

Street vendors calling prices.

Engines.

Wheels.

Dogs.

Someone arguing from an upper-floor window.

A distant whistle sounded somewhere deeper in the city and disappeared beneath the surrounding noise.

Blackwood had a market street.

Ashbourne seemed capable of producing an entire Blackwood’s worth of noise every few blocks.

Joe found himself smiling.

--------

Buildings grew taller as they traveled south and east through the expanding streets.

Two stories became normal.

Then three.

Some commercial streets had four- and five-story structures packed shoulder to shoulder, shops on the ground floor with offices or homes above.

Through one western avenue, Joe caught sight of neighborhoods much denser than anything they had passed so far.

Tall residential blocks crowded narrow streets.

Laundry crossed between windows.

Children played near stair entrances.

The spaces between buildings looked almost rationed.

Land was expensive.

People responded by stacking households upward.

Joe turned east at the next opening and saw almost the opposite.

Lower houses.

More trees.

Walls enclosing individual plots.

Courtyards.

Several homes large enough that their roofs spread wider than entire Blackwood businesses.

Joe remembered the address folded inside his belongings.

Edwin lived somewhere in the East District.

----------

The caravan continued south.

Commerce swallowed everything.

Warehouses covered entire blocks.

Inns advertised enclosed yards large enough for dozens of wagons.

Large herb merchants stored goods in stacked crates rather than small bundles.

Porters moved cargo on wheeled platforms.

Several streets seemed devoted almost entirely to medicine.

Joe’s attention sharpened.

One shop displayed rows of sealed bottles behind glass.

Another advertised compressed nutrient pills.

A painted board outside a larger establishment listed concentrated herbal extracts, recovery tablets and high-density martial tonics.

Joe leaned slightly toward the opening in the wagon.

So that was how cities supported so many martial artists.

Food could only become so dense before eating itself consumed time.

Blackwood solved the problem with meat, medicinal meals, herbs and decoctions.

Ashbourne had turned nourishment into an industry.

Extract.

Concentrate.

Preserve.

Measure.

Transport.

The thought connected almost immediately to the six spirit stones hidden in his luggage.

Joe stopped there.

Not yet.

He couldn’t even safely use their energy.

But the pharmaceutical logic interested him.

If ordinary herbs could be processed into increasingly concentrated forms, then perhaps the boundary between medicine and cultivation resources was wider than he had assumed.

He filed the thought away.

There would be time.

-----------

The people were another difference.

Most remained ordinary.

Laborers.

Shopkeepers.

Drivers.

Children.

Clerks.

Merchants.

But martial practitioners appeared frequently enough that Joe could no longer treat every trained movement as noteworthy.

Skin.

Another Skin practitioner.

Muscle.

A man unloading metal bars whose strength suggested at least Late Muscle.

Someone walking behind a wealthy merchant moved with the quiet balance Joe associated with Bone.

Joe watched him disappear into the crowd.

In Blackwood, a Bone practitioner could shape local politics.

Here, one might be hired security.

Joe wondered how many true Martial Artists lived inside the city.

How many Acquired practitioners.

How many people possessed information he had only discovered yesterday.

For once, his strength did not make the world look smaller.

The city made his knowledge look smaller instead.

---------

Near sunset, the caravan entered a freight yard in the South District.

Joe knew the district only because a large painted sign identified the transport office overseeing the compound.

The yard was enormous.

Multiple caravans occupied separate rows.

Stable workers led animals away.

Porters rolled cargo toward warehouses.

Clerks shouted numbers.

Drivers argued over unloading priority.

One caravan had apparently arrived from another city less than an hour earlier, yet nobody treated the event as noteworthy.

Joe climbed down.

His legs appreciated solid ground.

He collected his bags and stepped away from the wagon while the journey continued around him without him.

That felt strange.

For weeks, the caravan had defined distance.

Now it was simply another business operating in the capital.

Joe moved to the edge of the yard.

Above the warehouse roofs, utility wires cut across a sky turning orange.

The dense western neighborhoods disappeared into evening haze.

To the east, trees broke the roofline more frequently.

Farther north, the city rose gradually toward districts he could barely distinguish at this distance.

And everywhere between them were streets.

Thousands of buildings.

Probably more people than Joe had seen during his entire second life combined.

He thought of Green Hollow.

Six strips of farmland.

The house.

His grandparents.

Then Blackwood.

The guardhouse.

The workshop.

The streets that had once seemed complicated enough to contain an entire future.

Stonegate had already made Blackwood feel small.

Ashbourne did something different.

It made Joe realize how many different kinds of large existed.

Population.

Wealth.

Knowledge.

Institutions.

Industry.

Power.

He reached into his coat and unfolded Edwin’s address.

East District.

Joe adjusted the bag over his shoulder.

He had arrived with nearly five gold, an inheritance through Innate, six spirit stones, a Root Kindling method, and strength nobody here had reason to suspect.

Yet standing on an unfamiliar street among more than a million people, Joe felt something he had not felt in years.

He was a beginner again.
