TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

Joe woke before dawn on his sixteenth birthday and remained beneath the blanket for several moments, listening to the Deepwinter wind slip beneath the roof tiles. Simon was still asleep in the next room, while somewhere beyond the courtyard an early cart rolled over the blackstone road with slow, hollow knocks. Nothing felt different.

One. Two. Four. Eight. Sixteen.

Joe had noticed the pattern years ago, but noticing a pattern did not mean the world had any obligation to continue it. Four previous points were not enough to establish a law, no matter how neatly they doubled.

He sat up.

Then the familiar sensation came.

It was not sound and not exactly sight. The words simply appeared in that same strange inner place where his other talents seemed to exist.

One Effort Equals a Hundred.

Joe stared.

”A hundred?”

No explanation followed, and after several breaths the words disappeared.

Past Life Memory had been obvious from the beginning. Perfect Health and Perfect Body had taken years to properly understand. No Regression required experimentation, while Every Hard Work Pays Off had turned out to be much broader than its name first suggested. This talent sounded almost offensively simple.

That made Joe suspicious.

He dressed quietly and stepped into the courtyard. Frost silvered the stones, dried herbs hung dark beneath the eaves, and the clay jars beside the medicine table were cold enough that he could feel their chill against his fingers. The eastern sky had only begun to pale.

Static Foundation was the safest place to start.

Joe entered the first stance carefully. His feet settled into position, knees loosened, hips aligned and shoulders relaxed. He drew one full breath and allowed blood energy to settle into the familiar resonance before completing a single deliberate cycle.

Then he stopped.

Something felt different.

Joe entered the stance again and paused before beginning the breathing pattern. His left foot shifted less than the width of his fingernail. The change was tiny, but the outside of his calf immediately relaxed more cleanly. That altered the knee, which in turn allowed his hip to settle into a slightly better line.

He moved his foot back to the old position, then returned it.

The difference was undeniable.

Joe had practiced this stance thousands of times. Yesterday, that imperfection had been too small for him to isolate. One genuine repetition this morning exposed it.

He performed the stance again using the correction. When the cycle ended, several more details remained in his mind. His breath entered fractionally too early near the middle. His right shoulder relaxed a little slower than his left, and his weight settled too abruptly at the end, creating a tiny interruption in resonance.

Joe’s expression changed.

Every Hard Work Pays Off had always done this to some extent. Genuine practice did not merely increase an invisible number. Work returned something useful: better familiarity, a clearer feeling for balance, a correction to breathing, an understanding of why one movement felt smoother than another. Nothing appeared from nowhere, but meaningful effort reliably produced progress.

Now that payoff had changed.

Joe opened the panel. Static Foundation had moved enough that he did not need to wonder whether he remembered the previous value incorrectly.

At Complete Foundation, progress had become painfully slow. Weeks of practice could disappear into tiny improvements. One proper effort had visibly advanced it.

”One hundred,” Joe murmured.

He tried Dynamic Foundation next. One complete sequence, performed carefully from beginning to end.

The result came almost immediately. His heel landed too firmly during one transition. Blood energy lagged slightly behind his torso during another. A smaller elbow movement would allow the ribs to rotate with less unnecessary tension.

Joe performed the sequence again with the corrections.

Again, progress.

Again, insight.

Two serious repetitions felt like days of refinement.

He sat down on the courtyard step, barely noticing the cold stone beneath him. The new talent was not simply multiplying a panel value. It was multiplying the payoff of meaningful effort, and Every Hard Work Pays Off already ensured that proper effort produced something useful.

The two talents fit together almost perfectly.

Joe needed another test.

Medicine.

He returned inside, lit the stove and took out ingredients for one of his ordinary recovery packets. Nothing experimental. Nothing dangerous. It was a formula he had prepared hundreds of times.

He sliced the root, ground the bark, heated the water and added the bitter vine at the usual stage. One complete preparation.

After the medicine cooled, Joe tasted a drop. His hand stopped.

The packet itself had not become a hundred times stronger. Of course it wasn’t. The ingredients had not multiplied.

His understanding of the preparation had.

The root pieces were slightly too large for the extraction time he normally used. He had been grinding the bark longer than necessary. The bitter vine entered the mixture several breaths too early, while the final heating stage could probably be shortened without weakening the medicine.

They were small flaws, the sort of things Joe could imagine discovering after dozens or hundreds of carefully compared batches.

He had made one.

Joe prepared a second packet.

Smaller cuts. Less grinding. Slightly adjusted heat. Bitter vine later. Earlier finish.

The smell changed subtly. Cleaner.

The second packet was not dramatically stronger, but it was better. More importantly, making it produced another layer of understanding.

That was when Joe truly became excited.

The second effort had not started from where the first effort began. It started after the equivalent of a hundred repetitions had already improved his technique. The first effort improved the second, the second improved the third, and the benefits could compound.

Joe deliberately tested a mistake next. He performed a Dynamic transition using a flaw he already understood, allowing his heel to land too heavily.

The result was almost unpleasant.

The talent did not magically whisper the correct technique into his mind. Instead, the hundredfold experience made the inefficiency glaring. He could feel wasted force, delayed blood-energy movement and unnecessary tension far more clearly than before.

He corrected the movement and performed it again.

The better version settled quickly.

That established several useful rules. The effort had to be meaningful. Mindless movement did not deserve the same return. Unknown knowledge remained unknown, while mistakes did not transform themselves magically into correct answers. But meaningful practice gave Joe roughly a hundred repetitions of experience, progress and insight that could reasonably have emerged from the work itself.

Then No Regression preserved whatever genuine improvement he earned.

Joe looked at his hands. Three talents were now reinforcing one another. Four, perhaps, once Perfect Body entered the equation. His talents were beginning to look less like unrelated gifts and more like pieces that had been designed to fit together.

Joe stored the thought away. He had no way to answer it today.

Simon appeared in the doorway with his hair disordered from sleep.

”Why are you making medicine before sunrise?”

Joe looked at him.

Simon yawned, then suddenly froze.

”Oh.”

Joe waited.

”Happy birthday.”

Joe smiled. ”Thanks.”

Simon went toward the kitchen. ”You’re sixteen.”

”Apparently.”

”Mother will complain if we don’t make something.”

”Then don’t tell her.”

Simon considered that seriously. ”Good point.”

Joe did not tell him about the talent. It made no sense to tell Simon or anyone his deepest secret.

He spent the rest of the morning testing smaller things. Knife handling. Familiar footwork. Herb sorting. A few basic spear movements from guard training. The pattern remained consistent. A serious effort produced visible refinement, and the insight gained from that effort improved the next one.

By noon Joe had also learned another lesson.

He could no longer afford to practice lazily.

Before today, ten mediocre repetitions were merely less useful than ten good ones. Now a single high-quality effort carried so much value that preparation mattered almost as much as the repetition itself.

Observe.

Think.

Perform properly.

Absorb the result.

Correct.

Then perform again.

The talent that made practice faster was already making Joe more deliberate.

Mira arrived that evening carrying a small round cake sweetened with honey and covered in crushed nuts.

They ate in the front room because the courtyard had become too cold after sunset. Mira told them about a merchant who had tried hiding spoiled medicinal roots beneath good bundles. Simon described Daren falling asleep during a quiet afternoon watch and later insisting that he had only been ”listening with his eyes closed.”

For an hour, Joe let himself simply be sixteen.

Later, after Mira left and Simon went to sleep, Joe returned to the courtyard. Stars hung above the narrow square of sky between the rooftops, and the brazier beside his medicine table glowed a dull orange.

Joe opened the panel.

Static had moved. Dynamic had moved. Medicine had moved.

And each effort had taught him something while doing so.

His gaze dropped.

Skin Tempering IV 2/100.

He had deliberately avoided it all day.

Foundation practice could be stopped instantly. Medicine worked on ingredients outside his body.

Skin Tempering physically changed flesh. If one effort was worth a hundred, that deserved preparation.

Joe closed the panel.

Tomorrow he will eat properly, prepare enough medicine, choose one controlled region and measure everything.

Then he would find out what one hundred efforts meant when the thing being improved was his own body.
