Chapter 633: Before the Army Is Reborn

Before the Army Is Reborn

Then Black set the document down and looked up he really looked up at that moment.

His eyes got really sharp they caught the light from the torch like pieces of glass getting ready for a battle. He was calm a moment ago but that calmness was gone now. His back got straight. His shoulders went back too. Even the way he breathed changed it was slower and deeper like his body had shifted into a way of being. The torchlight made his eyes look like they were ready, for something his whole body looked like it was getting ready to fight.

A soldier stepping out of thought and into command.

Something colder. More precise. Necessary.

The man took a breath in. He inhaled slowly. The air went into his lungs slowly.

The kind of breath that the commanders took before they tore a night in half. It is the kind of breath that the commanders took. The commanders took this kind of breath before the commanders went on to tear the night in half.

The mans voice became really calm and slow. He spoke in a tone like he meant every word the music teacher said. The music teachers voice was steady it was, like that when the music teacher was talking to his students.

”So now—”

The man stopped himself.

The room was really quiet. It felt like you could hear a pin drop. His eyes slowly moved down the table. They went past the torches that were burning with flames over the hands that were clasped together and the people who were sitting up straight until they stopped on the two officers who were sitting at the far end of the table. The silence and the two officers were what his eyes were focused on. The two officers were just sitting there.

He said to them in a voice ”You two are the only ones left in the ranking chain now are you not?”

The men reacted at the time. Both men did this together. They just reacted away both of them.

Their backs got straight muscles got tight under their uniforms. One of the police officers swallowed. The other police officer looked sideways for a second then they both nodded. The police officers nodded at the time. The police officers stood up straight. Looked serious.

”Yes Commander,” one of them said, his voice a bit too dry. We are the remaining ranking officers who work under Lady Alina.. Since Lady Alina is now the Prime Minister, Lady Alina does not have a seat in the military anymore. So it is the two of us who are left the two of us who are, under Lady Alina.

The words hung there they felt really heavy. This was not something that was true. It was also a quiet way of saying that the people, in charge did not have as much power as they seemed to have. The words showed that the authority of these people was actually very thin.

Halcka, the one of the two gave a short nod. His jaw was tight. ”We know about the gap, sir.” His eyes did not move,. You could see the worry in his shoulders. Halcka and the other person both knew what the gap was, about. They both understood what it meant for them.

Black looked at them without saying a word for a moment.

The room felt smaller when he looked at it the papers on the table made a sound when the air moved a little. Then his eyes got smaller they got sharper, like a knife getting sharper.

He asked them if they knew how big the old Vellore army was. He also wanted to know what the Vellore army structure was like. He was really curious, about the Vellore army.

The men looked at each other again. It was a look. They did not want to say anything loud. For a moment they were not sure what to do.. That feeling went away really fast. This was something the men could not change, not at this time. The men knew they had to be careful, with this.

The leaner one said yes. He said it quietly. We do have what you are looking for the leaner one said.

Black said to give him the number.

The officer swallowed. His throat went up and down. It was, like the words he wanted to say were heavy but when he finally talked his voice was steady and calm. The officer spoke in a controlled voice a voice, the kind of voice that showed he was trying to stay calm.

”About one hundred fifty thousand soldiers total.”

Black did not look surprised all. Black just stayed calm. Did not do anything.

He nodded his head one time it was slow. He did it on purpose like the answer told him something he already thought was true something he had already figured out before.

He said ”I read that here too” and he tapped one of the papers on the table. There were a lot of documents spread out on the table. The paper made a sound when he touched it. The papers had writing on them about a kingdom that did not exist anymore. The writing was, like a reminder of what happened to the kingdom. He looked at the papers. Saw the records of the fallen kingdom staring back at him.

Halcka cleared his throat the sound was brittle in the silence. And sir Halcka said, the number of people that are left in place is around twenty thousand people. The number of people left in place may be more, than twenty thousand people.

Black nodded again. This time you could see the tension in his body. His neck was a little stiff. His jaw was tight. He was not just saying okay to the report. Black was really looking at the report trying to understand what it was really saying. It was not just about numbers, on a piece of paper. The report was something and Black was figuring out how bad it was.

Twenty thousand.

Not soldiers.

Survivors.

His eyes went out of focus for a moment as the memory came back to him. The fight between Leon and King Garys men was very clear, in his mind. It was a thing to remember. There was no forgetting the details. One hundred thousand men had marched under King Garys flag they were proud. Thought they would win. But only fifty thousand made it back they were. Bleeding. Thirty thousand men were killed in one attack Leon and his friends had destroyed them it was like they never existed. The memory of Leon and King Garys fight was still very painful. Leon and his men had fought hard against King Garys forces. And the last twenty thousand...

The team had not lost. The team was still going strong. The team was not defeated.

The people had gotten down on their knees.

A kingdom crushed in a night.

The king is gone now.

The land still had the burn marks on it. The land was really. It still showed the burn marks, from what had happened. The land carried these scars for a time and the burn marks were still very noticeable.

Black breathed out slowly through his nose. It was a sound, like a soft whisper. His eyes were looking at the rows of ink and parchment in front of him.. Black was not really seeing the ink and parchment. He was thinking about something. Black was thinking about cities that had been destroyed. Black was thinking about barracks and borders that could not be protected anymore.

The man spoke in a voice almost like he was talking to himself. He said ”I am being honest when I say this”. The kingdom needs to be protected. Twenty thousand soldiers are not enough to do that. Twenty thousand soldiers will not be enough, for what’s coming to the kingdom.

The words went into the room. They just stayed there. They were heavy and stubborn. It was, like smoke that would not go away. The words just hung in the air like that smoke. They would not clear out. The words were really stubborn they just stayed in the room.

Nobody made a move. The torches on the stone walls just stood there too. They even seemed to be a little scared the fire in them getting smaller and moving around like they did not want to interrupt what was just said loud. The torches looked like they were waiting to see what would happen next, with the thought that had just been spoken aloud by someone.

Black leaned back in his chair. The dark metal of Blacks armor made a noise as it moved. It was not a loud noise but you could hear it clearly in the quiet room. Black tilted his head back. Looked up at the ceiling. Blacks eyes got a little smaller like Black was trying to figure out something that nobody else could see. Black took one breath. Then Black took another breath. When Black looked down again Blacks eyes were fixed on the two officers who were standing in front of Black.

The man said we need military power. His voice was calm. You could tell he was very serious. We need a lot military power.

Both men stood up at the same time. The air between them became very tense. One of the men swallowed hard his eyebrows came together. His hand formed a fist by his side. Then he made himself talk. The men were clearly waiting for something to happen. Both men were very nervous you could see it in the way they stood. The air was filled with tension, between both men.

”How do you plan to do that sir?” he asked in an respectful tone but you could tell he was really worried. ”King Leon is still working on getting the people to trust him. The people are following him. Building an army this quickly is a big task, especially since we have to rebuild what we lost. King Leon has a lot of work to do to make that happen.”

His voice stopped working for a second. The pain of losing all those things was still there when he spoke.

Black stopped him from talking, not in a way but in a strong way. He nodded his head down for a second showing that he knew what was being said was true. He was not going to back down from what he thought. ”I know ” Black said. His chin went down a bit. ”I am not blind to the situation that we’re, in ” he said and he meant it.

For a moment something gentle moved behind his eyes. It was not that he was unsure or scared. He had a confidence. This confidence was the kind that did not need to be loud to be strong. The confidence of this man was quiet. It was very strong.

That thing was there and then it was gone it happened fast.. It stayed with me like when you hear a bell ringing and the sound keeps going even after it stops. The sound of the bell is still, in my head it was a clear sound.

”But I believe in him,” Black went on, his voice carrying a quiet weight that pressed into the room. ”My king will do what needs to be done. And so will we.”
