The next morning, from the Netherlands to Spain, from Europe to the rest of the world, all major media outlets were reporting on the marquee quarter-final knockout match that took place in Amsterdam.

Almost all media and fans found Real Madrid’s disastrous defeat unbelievable. Before the match, everyone had favored Real Madrid. They were all expecting the star-studded Galaxy Battleship to waltz past Ajax, advance to the final, and ultimately lift the trophy.

This was the Champions League everyone had expected to see.

But what stunned everyone was that Ajax scored four goals in one half, avenging their loss at the Bernabéu.

”Seventeen-year-old Chinese prodigy Yang Yang came on as a substitute at halftime. In just forty-five minutes, he showcased his all-encompassing skill on the right wing to the entire world. Crossing from the flank, switching the play with long balls, taking on defenders one-on-one... these are all his strengths, his bread and butter.”

”But what was most impressive was the final, game-killing penalty, which came from Yang Yang’s mad sixty-plus-meter dash. He used his speed and steady dribbling to break past four players in a row: Roberto Carlos, Cambiasso, Solari, and Mejia. His blistering pace couldn’t help but remind everyone of Ronaldo in his prime.”

”At the same time, the bloated figure of Ronaldo could only watch silently from the forward line as this junior player recreated his former glory.”

”In a forty-five-minute performance, Yang Yang scored one goal and provided two assists, orchestrating Ajax’s great comeback. He was also named the Man of the Match, making him the youngest in Champions League history to receive the award, and it was Yang Yang’s first time earning this honor.”

After heaping praise on Ajax and Yang Yang, Marca quickly turned its aim on Real Madrid, arguing that the team’s performance was completely unworthy of the Galaxy Battleship title, especially regarding the players’ fitness.

”In fact, as early as the latter part of the first half, our superstars were already showing signs of flagging. By the second half, we couldn’t keep up with the opponent’s rhythm and pace at all. This led to our players being completely powerless to stop their attacks, only able to watch again and again as the opponent sent the ball into our goal.”

Queiroz and his coaching staff should bear the responsibility for this, but Marca believed that Real Madrid’s management should also be held accountable, as they were the ones who planned last year’s Asia tour, which caused serious problems in the team’s crucial summer pre-season preparations.

Not only that, but Marca also heavily criticized the team’s defense.

”Casillas criticized the team’s defense after the match. He believes the weakness of the defense is not a recent problem. Everyone who knows the team knew that this would happen sooner or later. It was like a death notice that had already been sent out; no one just expected to receive it last night, at the Amsterdam Arena.”

”It’s unbelievable. We played well in the first half and were even leading one-nil, but in the second half, we were completely stunned and fell right into their trap. We couldn’t keep up with their rhythm, and the holes in our backline were endlessly exploited by their attacks.”

Marca published Casillas’s original words, believing the Real Madrid ”Gate God” had hit the nail on the head in pointing out the team’s core problem: the fragile defensive line simply couldn’t support the team’s powerful offense and star-studded lineup.

...

Besides Marca, Real Madrid’s mouthpiece, Diario AS, also ran a headline on its front page: Self-Deception? No!

The Diario AS commentary argued that Real Madrid’s collapse was a wake-up call for everyone. Management needed to sober up and realize that football isn’t just a game of piling up superstars; they must respect the fundamental laws of the sport, not act recklessly.

”When Beckham transitioned to a defensive midfielder, we all regarded him with distrust. In fact, we criticized him plenty over the past season. But after last night’s disastrous defeat, we have to admit that Beckham was actually the most important person on the team.”

”With him, we could beat Ajax four-two at home. Without him, we lost one-four away, an unbearable defeat. Throughout the match, Boerhaave was like a puppet being pulled around by the opponent. The substitute Cambiasso should be held responsible for the last goal conceded, and Guti was completely invisible the entire game.”

”Nearly every Ajax attack could directly face our defensive line. Every one of their counter-attacks easily sliced through our midfield. Yang Yang, in the number ninety-nine jersey, orchestrated attack after attack from the right wing, while our superstars remained up front, waiting for passes from their teammates.”

Diario AS also aimed its criticism directly at head coach Queiroz, believing his lineup and formation were highly problematic.

”As early as after the first leg, we were skeptical about the choice to start Mejia at center-back. But at the time, the team won four-two, making all doubts seem unconvincing. However, the defeat in the second leg proved our earlier concerns were valid.”

”Ibrahimovic is nearly two meters tall, yet Queiroz arranged for Mejia, who is under one-point-eight meters, to mark the Nordic Giant. The goal conceded at the start of the second half made Queiroz’s clumsy tactics clear for all to see.”

”Why not Pavin? He’s one-point-eight-eight meters tall. Wouldn’t he have been more suitable for marking Ibrahimovic than Mejia?”

”In the post-match press conference, Queiroz explained that he felt Mejia was less rash and less prone to making mistakes. Perhaps he’s right, Pavin does make more mistakes, but is it appropriate to have a short player mark a giant?”

In addition to the problems with the defensive line, Diario AS also questioned Queiroz’s use of his superstars.

They listed all of Ajax’s matches between the two legs, as well as their team rosters, and discovered that Ronald Koeman had rotated his squad extensively, while Queiroz had stubbornly stuck to his ”Twelve Arhats.”

”Ronaldo’s form is in a steep decline; this is an indisputable fact. There’s absolutely no problem with his ability, but he needs rest. So why would Queiroz rather let Ronaldo sleepwalk on the pitch than adopt a rotation strategy?”

Diario AS stated that while they could understand Queiroz’s conservatism regarding results, they opposed the Portuguese coach’s distrust of young players. They argued that Queiroz should give more opportunities and time to youngsters like Portillo.

”Perhaps losing to an Ajax team with an average age of just twenty-two will force Queiroz to do some serious self-reflection.”

In contrast to the attacks on Real Madrid’s management and coach by Marca and Diario AS, most media outlets gave Ajax’s performance very high praise. For Yang Yang, who was named Man of the Match at just seventeen, there was a deluge of flowers and applause.

The Dutch media believed that Yang Yang had, in front of Ronaldo himself, officially accepted the crown of ”Ronaldo II.”

Meanwhile, mainstream media in other countries turned their attention to the seventeen-year-old Chinese prodigy, considering him the key factor in Ajax’s victory. After digging deeper, they were all astonished by Yang Yang’s outstanding performance over the past six months, especially in the UEFA Champions League.

From the comeback against Bruges to knocking out Arsenal, and now Real Madrid, Ajax’s journey has been anything but easy, but Yang Yang has played a crucial role in every single match.

Now, he is not only the youngest goalscorer in Champions League history but also the youngest Man of the Match. This has left media and fans around the world astonished at his achievements. Just six months ago, he was merely an insignificant player on the reserve team.

But the most ecstatic of all was the Chinese media.

The morning after knocking out Real Madrid, from the official party newspapers and National Television down to online forums, fans were talking non-stop about Yang Yang, discussing this Chinese genius who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

That’s right. Although the National Television documentary attributed Yang Yang’s success to his hard work and diligence, a player who achieved such brilliant results at just seventeen could only be described as a genius by everyone.

After defeating Arsenal, Yang Yang garnered considerable attention in China. But after defeating Real Madrid, Yang Yang completely blew up back home.

Not only were the domestic media and fans full of praise for him, seeing him as the hope of Chinese Football, but even professionals within the country’s football circle were calling for him to be selected for the National Team. They believed he would become the leader of the new generation of Chinese Football and could even lead the team to break out of Asia.

Yang Yang had broken too many records.

He was the first Chinese person to appear in the Champions League, the first Chinese person to score a goal in the Champions League, and the first Chinese person to be named Man of the Match in a Champions League game. Moreover, he was the genius new star being heavily promoted by Ajax, the holy hall of youth academies. All of this made it impossible for domestic fans not to place immense hope in Yang Yang.

National Team head coach Arie Haan, who himself came from Ajax, went even further. During an interview with Chinese media on the very night Ajax eliminated Real Madrid, he declared on the spot that he had become a fan of Yang Yang.

”This year’s Asian Cup will be held in China. I’ve already saved a spot for Yang Yang.”

Arie Haan also stated that he would find time to personally travel to Amsterdam soon to meet with Ajax. He hoped Ajax would give the green light for Yang Yang to return to serve his country, as this year’s home-turf Asian Cup was very important.

Besides the National Team wanting to snatch him up, the National Youth Team also wanted a piece of the action.

Yang Yang was only seventeen, younger than the current players on the National Youth Team. However, the National Youth Team’s coaching staff clearly stated that they would call him up to the team to participate in the summer’s Toulon Cup and the upcoming AFC U-19 Championship, hoping to qualify for next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, which would be held in the Netherlands.

In a single night, Yang Yang’s fame exploded from the Netherlands to the entire world.

All the journalists and fans began to remember his name.

Yang Yang.
