Super Wingstorm

By the second half, the scoreboard at Jan Breydel Stadium showed the score was one to one.

The flow of the match was not surprising. Ajax showed an extremely strong desire to win from the very beginning, seizing the initiative despite being the away team and launching a flurry of attacks. However, the home team, Bruges, was clearly prepared for this. Their two tall center-backs stuck to Ibrahimovic like glue, never leaving his side.

The Swedish Striker was completely shut down by his opponents for the entire first half.

Mitja on the left wing was also ineffective. Across Ajax’s entire front line, only Wesley Sonck on the right was performing decently. During an attack just before the end of the first half, he suddenly broke into the penalty area and earned a penalty for his team. The Belgium striker took the shot himself and scored, netting his fourth goal of the Champions League group stage this season.

But before Sonck’s penalty, Bruges had already scored in the twenty-eighth minute. Off a set piece in the attacking half, their tall striker Langer overpowered both Heitinga and Escude, heading the ball in from right in front of the goal.

After switching sides for the second half, Ajax continued to launch frequent attacks against Bruges. But the home team defended solidly, giving Ajax no openings whatsoever. This left the visiting Ajax squad deeply frustrated.

Fortunately, in the other match taking place far away in Milan City, AC Milan and Celta Vigo were also tied at one-all. The two teams had scored in the fortieth and forty-second minutes, with goals from Kaka and Hesuli, respectively.

This allowed the Ajax players on the pitch to breathe a small, secret sigh of relief. Still, everyone knew that if they couldn’t find a way to break through their opponent’s goal, the situation would only become more and more unfavorable for Ajax.

Of course, the pressure was on all sides. Bruges and, far away in Milan, Celta Vigo were also under immense pressure.

Now, it was just a matter of seeing which of the three teams could handle the pressure best.

”It looks like Bruges’s head coach, Trend Solled, is about to make a substitution.”

”He’s bringing on Bengt Setnes for Rune Langer. This is a very clear signal that he’s strengthening his attack.”

”Both players are tall strikers, standing at 1.87 meters, and both are Solled’s fellow countrymen from Norway. They’re very good at winning high balls. Langer just used a set piece like that to score against Ajax.”

”But I have to point out, Setnes is physically stronger than Langer. He’s especially good in physical challenges and has a considerable advantage there. Before this match, he was Bruges’s starting striker, but he only scored one goal in the first five Champions League games. Langer, including his goal just now, has scored two, putting him slightly ahead.”

”Trend Solled bringing on Setnes at this moment is clearly a move to use his advantage in physical confrontations to put pressure on Ajax’s central defenders. This will be a huge challenge for Heitinga and Escude.”

”Let’s watch this attack from Bruges.”

”And there it is, a direct ball to Setnes up front. Ajax’s two center-backs are at a disadvantage in both height and strength. Setnes wins the first ball, lays it off to a teammate, who passes it out to the wing, and then another pass... oops, it’s overhit.”

”But we can already see the change in Bruges’s attack since Setnes came on.”

”Ajax needs to be careful. This is a dangerous sign.”

...

...

Yang Yang was returning from the warm-up area and was just about to sit back down on the bench when he heard a sudden gasp from the fans in the stands, followed by disappointed sighs. He turned his head just in time to see a Bruges player send a diagonal cross directly into the penalty box.

Ajax’s Goalkeeper, Robbent, came out decisively to claim the ball.

This made Yang Yang frown. As he sat back down on the bench, he heard the veteran Litmanen beside him shake his head and sigh. ”This striker Bruges just brought on is dangerous,” Litmanen said. ”He hasn’t scored in several consecutive games this season, which usually means he’s extremely hungry for a goal. And his advantage in physical challenges is obvious.”

Ajax’s center-backs prioritize playing the ball out from the back; both Heitinga and Escude were defenders with good distribution skills. The trade-off, however, was that neither of them had an advantage in height or physical strength. This weakness was especially exposed when facing tall strikers like Langer and Setnes.

On the flanks, both Maxwell and Talabesi were very active, frequently pushing forward to join the attack. The consequence was that they left a lot of space behind them. If the opponent seized an opportunity to launch a counter-attack from the wings, the tall striker following up in the center would become lethal.

”Our attack still isn’t clicking,” Litmanen added. ”If this continues, the situation will only get worse.”

Yang Yang completely agreed with Litmanen’s assessment.

’The main problem for Ajax right now is the conflict over ball distribution. Both Ibrahimovic and Van der Vaart are players who need the ball at their feet. They’re both in the middle of the pitch—one a forward, one a midfielder—so their roles clash. On top of that, the wingers aren’t active enough, causing the ball to be too concentrated in the center when it gets to the final third.’

’The result is that it’s relatively easy for Bruges to defend. Ajax’s attacking tempo is too slow, making it difficult to create any real threats.’

’Not only is Ibrahimovic having a poor game, but Mitja and Sonck are also performing badly.’

’The former goes without saying; he’s done basically nothing on the left wing. On the right, Sonck is being completely shackled by Van der Heyden. Aside from that penalty, he’s had almost no impact.’

’They’ll probably make a substitution soon,’ Yang Yang guessed.

...

...

”Over in Milan, Celta Vigo scored!”

”What?”

Ronald Koeman’s eyes widened. He stared intently at his assistant, unable to believe what he was hearing.

”Ancelotti just brought on the young player Abate for Costacurta, restructuring the defensive line. As a result, the defense loosened up. Pete Luxin assisted Jose Ignacio for a goal. The score is now one to two.”

Luther Carroll looked a little panicked, but he quickly relayed the information he had just received.

He had gotten the call right after Celta Vigo scored.

Ronald Koeman quickly snapped out of his shock. He realized clearly that the match could not go on like this. They had to score, and quickly, or their chance to advance from the group would be lost.

”Quick, get Litmanen ready to go on.”

After hearing this, Luther Carroll immediately turned and shouted to Litmanen on the bench. The latter jumped up from his seat at once; he was already prepared and didn’t need to warm up again.

”Who are you taking off?” Luther Carroll asked, concerned.

’That’s right, who to take off?’

Ronald Koeman hesitated. He didn’t have many options at this point.

’Even though Mitja was playing poorly, he could still tie up opponents on the left wing. Sonck was on the right. Taking either of them off would mean Ajax would lose all threat from the flanks, which would be extremely detrimental to the attack.’

But soon, Ronald Koeman made his choice.

...

...

One minute after Celta Vigo’s goal, Ajax substituted Litmanen on for Mitja.

Van der Vaart was pushed forward to the left-wing position, while Litmanen and Sneijder took over the center, responsible for the team’s midfield organization and passing. This officially sounded the horn for Ajax’s desperate counter-offensive.

Celta Vigo had scored. Ajax no longer had any choice.

Only by scoring, only by defeating Bruges, could the team hope to advance. Otherwise, they would have to dejectedly drop down to the UEFA Cup.

But Bruges also knew the difficult situation Ajax was in. Trend Solled quickly made a second substitution, bringing on a defensive midfielder, Smolders, for one of his attacking players to further strengthen his defense.

Ajax attacked relentlessly, but Bruges simply retreated into their own half, defending solidly. Through their tight defense, they made it incredibly difficult for Ajax to find any effective attacking opportunities.

...

...

”Ajax is making their second substitution of the match, bringing on Soetters for Wesley Sonck.”

”This is yet another signal that they are bolstering their attack.”

”Ronald Koeman has been forced to go for broke.”

”Van der Vaart wasn’t performing well on the left wing, so he’s been moved back to an advanced midfield role, roaming behind the main striker, Ibrahimovic. Soetters takes the left wing, and on the right, they’ve pushed up the Tunisian right-back Talabesi, who just returned for this match.”

”Ajax is in a frenzy now, but there isn’t much time left for them.”

”The clock has hit the eighty-minute mark. Only ten minutes left, plus stoppage time.”

”Actually, Ajax should probably slow down their attack a bit and try to draw Bruges out. That would give them more space to attack. Instead, by pressing this high up, not only are they allowing the opponent to set up a tight defense, but they’re also exposing a huge amount of space behind them. This is a golden opportunity for a team like Bruges, which specializes in defensive counter-attacks.”

”I’m sure Ronald Koeman is well aware of his situation, but he has no choice.”

”Celta Vigo is leading AC Milan two to one. The Red-Black Army has shown no fighting spirit at all in this match, so it’s very likely Celta Vigo will win. Ajax can only advance as the second-place team in the group by winning this match, which would put them ahead of Celta Vigo based on their head-to-head record.”

”But right now, besides focusing on their attack, Ajax also needs to pay attention to their defense. Their wing-backs are pushed way too far forward, leaving massive space for Bruges to counter-attack.”

”Alright, and just as we were saying that, Bruges launches a counter-attack.”

”The pass goes to the left wing, Van der Heyden makes a quick run forward! A fast break from Bruges!”

”Van der Heyden dribbles down the left flank, with Talabesi and De Jong scrambling back desperately to defend.”

”A cross into the box...”

”GOAL!!!!!”

”SETNES!!!!”

”I was just saying that Ajax had to be careful of Setnes.”

”This player was starving for a goal! After coming on as a substitute, he scores for Bruges in the eighty-fourth minute!”

”This has to be the game-winner!”

”This goal from Setnes completely shatters Ajax’s dream of advancing in the Champions League. In fact, if they can’t equalize, they will likely be eliminated by finishing last in the group, missing out on the UEFA Cup entirely.”

”This goal is a massive blow to their morale.”

”To concede a goal like that, at a time like this... it’s a huge blow to everyone at Ajax.”

”There are six minutes of regular time left. I wonder, will these be Ajax’s final six minutes in the Champions League?”
