Strongest Incubus System

The departure from the convent was quick, but not hurried enough to look like an escape. Elizabeth thanked Sister Maelia with all the necessary formality, promised to send Mirath’s donation in medicine, blankets, and coin, and made it clear, without saying it directly, that Nera Solt should not receive new visits without warning. The sister understood. Perhaps she had already understood even before Elizabeth spoke.

Damon walked to the carriage without looking back, although he felt Nera’s room like pressure against his back. It was not a direct magical sensation, nor a call like the one from the mines. It was memory that was too recent. The woman sitting on the floor, the crystals in her eyes, the broken words that still made sense. ”You still do not know how to listen without answering.” That bothered him more than he wanted to admit.

Ester noticed, as always.

”Get in,” she said, opening the carriage door.

”I was going to get in.”

”Before you decide to stand there thinking dramatically in the courtyard.”

”I do not think dramatically.”

Elizabeth passed by him. ”You think in a rather visual way.”

Damon looked at her. ”Was that criticism?”

”It was a socially polite observation.”

”So criticism.”

Ester pushed him by the sleeve before the conversation could continue. Damon entered and sat down. Elizabeth came next. Ester entered last, set the case on the floor, and immediately grabbed his wrist. The examination was longer than before. She followed the internal crack in the lock, passed Qi through the ends of the affected meridian, and narrowed her eyes when she felt the residual instability.

”You should have stepped away sooner,” she said.

”I stepped away when you told me to.”

”You should have stepped away before I told you to.”

”That requires predicting your order.”

”You have known me long enough.”

Damon did not argue. He was too tired for that, and the thin pain in his wrist made it clear that Ester was right. The lock had worked, but in a limited way. If Nera had said anything more, or if the Heart had been closer, perhaps the structure would have broken completely. The idea that a simple set of words had been capable of causing that reaction did not please him.

Elizabeth opened the notebook as soon as the carriage began descending the hill. ”We need to organize this before the information becomes only fear. First: Nera confirmed that the Heart is not ore, an artifact, or an ordinary creature. She described it as a world root, cold that predates names.”

”Too poetic to be useful,” Damon said.

”Not necessarily,” Ester replied. ”Root implies growth, branching, a search for a path. The behavior she described is consistent with geological elemental energy, not a sealed object.”

Elizabeth nodded. ”Second: it does not think like people, but seeks a path upward. Third: Damon is a possible path, perhaps the best available. Fourth: Valcair wants to possess the key before the door opens on its own.”

Damon looked through the window. ”And fifth: they are looking for a child of ancient lineage.”

The silence in the carriage became heavier.

Ester slowly released his wrist. ”That part is the most immediate.”

”I agree,” Elizabeth said. ”Damon can be protected. The mines can be watched. Havelock is imprisoned. But an unidentified child is far too vulnerable.”

”Who in Arven would have an ancient lineage?”

Elizabeth thought for a few seconds. ”Several lesser families can claim ancient blood, but most of it is genealogical exaggeration. The term Nera used may mean a lineage tied to the founding of Arven, not merely old nobility.”

”Arven grew on top,” Damon murmured.

Ester looked at him.

He continued, ”That was what Nera said. The Heart was not born in Arven. Arven grew on top. Maybe ancient lineage means descendants of the first settlers who built the mines, not necessarily nobles.”

Elizabeth wrote it down. ”That broadens the list.”

”Or changes the direction,” Ester said. ”Old mining families. Hereditary supervisors. Tunnel guardians. People the nobility might not even register as important.”

Damon let out a low sound. ”Valcair may be searching among the wrong families.”

”Perhaps,” Elizabeth said. ”Or perhaps they know exactly where to look.”

The carriage accelerated a little as it entered the main road. The two guards accompanying them maintained a regular distance, attentive to the trees. Damon observed the line of pines to the left. Nothing moved suspiciously, but he did not like the silence. Not after Nera. Not after the word child.

”Salt men,” he said.

Elizabeth raised her eyes. ”What?”

”Nera said Darius, salt men, men without crests, and a woman with a green veil. House Merrow sells refined salt to Verden.”

Elizabeth went still for half a second. ”Aria mentioned that.”

”Yes. And the Merrow route was one of the watched paths.”

Ester understood at the same time. ”If Valcair is looking for a child, they can use salt merchants to circulate without drawing attention.”

Elizabeth tapped twice on the side of the carriage. The coachman slowed a little. She opened the narrow window and called one of the guards. ”Send a short message to the mansion as soon as we find the next post. Priority for Morgana. Say: ’Salt men may be searching for child of ancient lineage. Check House Merrow, mining families, and founding records. Protect minors.’ Do not mention Nera or the Heart.”

The guard nodded and fell back.

Damon looked at Elizabeth. ”That was fast.”

”Children disappear fast.”

The phrase did not come cold. It came practical, which was perhaps worse. Damon rested his head against the wood and closed his eyes for a moment. The anger he had felt in Nera’s room was still there, but it needed to be kept small. Anger too large would open paths. Now he understood that in a more physical way.

Listen without answering.

The phrase returned.

Damon opened his eyes and looked at his wrist. On the outside, there was nothing but cold skin and bluish veins. Inside, the lock was cracked. He tried to rebuild it slowly, not like in the garden, but sitting in the moving carriage. A central line. A crossbar. Inner channel. The structure vibrated and nearly came apart. Ester noticed immediately.

”Stop.”

”I am correcting it.”

”You are training inside a moving carriage after spiritual exposure.”

”When you put it that way, it sounds bad.”

”Because it is.”

He undid the attempt.

Ester continued looking.

Damon raised his hands. ”There. I stopped.”

”I hate having to watch even your thoughts.”

”I also imagine that is tiring for you.”

”Do not use empathy as a weapon.”

Elizabeth turned another page, but there was a trace of humor in her voice. ”That was almost skillful.”

The humor did not last long. At the first village, the message was sent through a local messenger paid enough not to ask questions. Elizabeth also sent a second one through another route, with shorter content: ”Check Merrow and children of ancient blood. Urgent.” Two messages were risky, but one alone could disappear. After that, the carriage continued without stopping.

Halfway to Arven, the first sign of trouble appeared.

It was not an ambush.

It was a broken cart in the middle of the road.

The coachman slowed before Damon could say anything. Two men stood beside the fallen wheel, dressed as ordinary merchants. Sacks of salt were stacked on the cart. One of the guards approached first, hand near his sword. The men raised their hands, speaking loudly about an accident, a broken axle, and needing help.

Damon looked at Elizabeth.

Elizabeth looked at Ester.

Ester scowled. ”Of course.”

”Salt men,” Damon said.

”It could be coincidence,” Elizabeth replied, but she was already putting away the papers.

”Do you believe that?”

”No.”

Damon drew the curtain aside just enough to see better. The men seemed too nervous for ordinary merchants, but not enough to be soldiers. One of them had calloused hands, the other looked at the carriage too much. Neither carried a crest. The sacks of salt were tied, but one of them had a tear along the side. Damon noticed something metallic beneath the white grains.

”There is a weapon in the cart,” he said.

Ester grabbed his wrist. ”You stay.”

”I will stay.”

”Say it again.”

”I will stay.”

Elizabeth opened the door before Ester could grow more suspicious. She descended calmly, without seeming alarmed. Ester descended right after, case in hand, as if she were merely an annoyed doctor. Damon remained inside, hood low, but with his right hand ready.

Outside, Elizabeth spoke with enough sweetness to make any intelligent person concerned. ”Problems?”

The older man bowed. ”Forgive us, madam. The wheel broke. We only need to get the cart out of the way.”

”Naturally. Where are you taking so much salt?”

”Merrow, madam. Ordinary delivery.”

Elizabeth looked at the sacks. ”Curious. We are coming from Merrow’s direction.”

The man blinked.

Small mistake.

The Arven guard noticed and advanced half a step. The other merchant moved his hand beneath the cart. Ester moved before he could draw the hidden short crossbow. The medical case struck the man’s wrist with a dry sound. The weapon fell to the ground. At the same time, the older man pulled a thin blade from his sleeve and tried to grab Elizabeth by the arm.

He did not get close.

A line of ice pinned his feet to the road.

Damon was still sitting inside the carriage, his hand resting on the window.

Ester slowly turned her face toward him.

He raised his free hand. ”I stayed in the carriage.”

”You froze a man.”

”From the carriage.”

Elizabeth released the arm that had almost been grabbed and looked at the trapped man. ”Technically, he obeyed.”

”Do not help,” Ester said.

The guards disarmed the two men quickly. In the cart, they found three short crossbows, knives, a list of names, and a small silver bell wrapped in green cloth. When Elizabeth opened the cloth, the bell made no sound at all, but Damon felt the elemental root recoil as if something unpleasant had touched the air.

Ester noticed before he spoke. ”What is it?”

”That bell.”

Elizabeth went still, holding the object with the cloth. ”Nera said not to let Seraphine take a silver bell.”

Damon looked at the restrained men. ”Looks like we found a piece.”

The younger one went pale.

Elizabeth noticed and approached. ”Who were you delivering this to?”

He pressed his mouth shut.

Damon leaned slightly out the window. He did not release cold. Did not threaten. Only looked.

The man began to sweat.

Ester murmured, ”You are doing that on purpose.”

”I am only present.”

Elizabeth asked again. ”To whom?”

The younger man swallowed. ”To the woman with the green veil.”

The silence was immediate.

”Name,” Elizabeth said.

”I do not know. I swear. She meets the groups off the road. Pays in Valcair coin, but never shows her face.”

”Child,” Damon said. ”You were looking for a child.”

The older man spat on the ground. ”I do not know anything about any child.”

The younger one, however, went even paler.

Damon saw it.

Elizabeth too.

Ester spoke low, dangerous. ”Answer.”

The young man breathed quickly. ”A girl. They only told us to find a girl with a frost mark behind her ear. Ancient mining family. They said she might be in northern villages or in relatives’ houses near Arven.”

Damon felt the cold rise.

Ester tightened her grip on his wrist through the window, not caring about the awkward position. ”Listen without answering.”

The phrase worked.

Not because it was hers.

Because it was the same as Nera’s, turned into an order.

Damon breathed.

The ice did not advance.

Elizabeth wrapped the bell in the cloth again. ”Name of the girl?”

”I do not know,” the young man said. ”Only the mark. And they said that if she cried near the bell, it was her.”

Ester turned white with rage. ”They intended to test children with this.”

The older man tried to laugh. ”You do not understand what is at stake.”

Damon stepped out of the carriage.

Slowly.

Ester closed her eyes for an instant, as if asking patience from some deity that had probably already given up on him.

Damon walked to the man trapped in ice and crouched before him. He did not raise his voice. Did not freeze anything else. That made everything worse.

”Then explain.”

The man tried to hold his gaze. It did not last long. ”The Heart will open. Valcair knows. If it is not controlled, the entire north dies. You think a young duchess and a newly awakened monster will stop that?”

Damon was silent for a moment.

Then asked, ”How many groups?”

The man smiled.

Damon touched the ice trapping his feet. The layer climbed to his knees.

”How many?”

The smile died.

”Four. Maybe five. I do not know.”

”Going where?”

”Mining villages. Salt routes. One to the capital. One to the old farms.”

Elizabeth looked at the guards. ”Tie them both. We will take them with us. The cart will be marked and left for the nearest patrol.”

Ester collected the fallen crossbow and looked at Damon. ”You are going back to the carriage.”

Damon was still staring at the man. ”They are looking for a child.”

”I know.”

”Now.”

”I know.”

”Then we do not have time to return slowly.”

Elizabeth folded the cloth around the bell. ”I agree. But we also cannot run blindly. The message has already been sent to Morgana. Now we will send another through the nearest post with details: girl with a frost mark behind the ear, old mining families, salt groups, silver bell.”

Damon stood. ”And if the message arrives late?”

Elizabeth did not answer quickly.

That was answer enough.

Ester looked at him firmly. ”You are not going to go alone searching all of Arven for a child.”

”I know.”

”Say it without anger.”

He breathed.

”I know.”

”Better.”

But he was not calm. None of them were. The discovery of the bell and the list of names changed everything. Valcair was not merely preparing to act. They were already acting. Perhaps Havelock had been part of one front, while another searched for the child, another watched the mines, and another infiltrated the Council. Seraphine had not waited. She had simply moved different pieces at the same time.

Elizabeth searched through the list found in the cart. ”There are five names here. Three are old mining families. One of them lives near the ducal capital.”

Damon looked at her. ”Near the mansion?”

”In the lower part of the city. The foundry district.”

Ester let out a low sound. ”That is inside Arven.”

”Yes,” Elizabeth said. ”And if one of Morgana’s messages arrives in time, Ingrivid can protect the place.”

”If it arrives,” Damon said.

No one corrected him.

The journey resumed at a much faster pace. The two prisoners were tied to their own cart until the local patrol arrived; Elizabeth left clear instructions and a formal threat about what would happen if they disappeared. Then the carriage followed the road with the guards closer and the curtains closed. Damon sat, but did not relax for a second.

Ester did not try to make him drink medicine.

Perhaps she knew it would not help.

He looked at the fist closed over his knee. The anger was there, cold and concentrated. The idea of men using a bell to test children, making them cry to identify a lineage mark, was the kind of thing that made his body want to act before his head. But now he had the phrase. Listen without answering. The problem was that, at some point, answering would be necessary.

Elizabeth broke the silence after almost half an hour. ”When we arrive, do we go straight to the mansion?”

Damon raised his eyes. ”No.”

Ester looked at him.

He continued before she could start. ”If the list points to a family in the foundry district and one group went to the capital, we may be closer than the mansion. We send a guard to warn Morgana. We go there.”

”You are proposing entering an urban area after Valcair agents with minimal escort,” Ester said.

”I am proposing preventing a child from being taken.”

Elizabeth watched Damon for a few seconds. ”He is right.”

Ester turned to her as if the betrayal physically hurt.

Elizabeth continued, ”If we go to the mansion first, we lose time. If Morgana received the message, she will already be acting. If she did not, we are the only immediate response.”

Ester clenched her jaw. ”Then we do it my way.”

Damon blinked. ”You have a way?”

”I do. No running over rooftops. No freezing streets. No breaking into houses by smashing doors. Elizabeth talks. I check for any spiritual reaction. You stay behind until I tell you.”

”And if there is combat?”

”Then you act with precision.”

Damon nodded once. ”All right.”

Ester seemed surprised that he did not argue.

”Do not look at me like that,” he said. ”I learn under pressure.”

”You learn when children are at risk, apparently.”

”Then let us take advantage of it.”

The carriage entered the ducal capital through the eastern gate in the late afternoon. The city was busier than when they had left, with vendors closing stalls, blacksmiths ending shifts, and carts leaving trails of mud through the streets. The foundry district lay below the mansion hill, in an area of simple houses, metal workshops, and small furnaces. The air smelled of coal, iron, and burnt bread.

Elizabeth instructed the coachman to stop two streets away. One guard went to the mansion with the message. The other stayed with the carriage. Damon, Ester, and Elizabeth descended on foot.

”The family name is Orlen,” Elizabeth said, consulting the list. ”Miners for four generations. The father died in the third mine accident.”

Damon stopped for half a second.

Ester saw it.

”Control.”

”I am controlling.”

”Then continue.”

The Orlen house stood behind a mold workshop, small, with a faded blue door and a window protected by a simple grate. Nothing about it seemed special. Perhaps that was why it was so vulnerable. Elizabeth knocked on the door.

No one answered.

She knocked again.

Inside, something fell.

Damon felt it before he heard it.

A very low sound.

Like a bell trying to ring without a voice.

The elemental root froze.

This time, he answered.

But not with an explosion.

He only placed his hand on the lock and froze it from the inside, breaking the mechanism without destroying the door. He pushed. The door opened.

Ester did not reprimand him.

Inside, a woman lay near the table, conscious but dazed. A man in a gray cloak held a girl of perhaps eight years old by the arm. The child cried without sound. Behind her left ear, among strands of dark hair, there was a small pale mark shaped like a crystal.

In the man’s hand, a silver bell vibrated without making any sound.

Damon entered the house.

The man turned.

Ester spoke low, cold enough to match him.

”Precision.”

Damon nodded.

The door closed behind him.
