SSS Rank Awakening: The World Beyond Redemption

The light of the twin suns had begun to soften by the time Rael turned back toward the walls. The long daylight of Aetherion was tipping toward its end, and the first cooler currents of approaching night moved through the trees. At his level, remaining outside after dark was close to a death sentence. Higher-tier monsters stirred once the suns dropped, and the Wildlands stopped pretending to be merely dangerous. He kept a steady pace, checking the line of the massive wall whenever the canopy thinned. Soon the dark stone bulk filled the horizon. No one with working eyes could miss something that large.

Closer in, the outbound and inbound traffic thickened. Hunters and small parties streamed toward the gate in uneven clusters. Some walked with the loose, joking energy of a clean day—shoulders relaxed, voices carrying, the occasional laugh cutting through the general murmur. Others moved in exhausted silence, armor scored, faces gray with fatigue. A few limped. One man was being carried between two companions, head hanging. Success and near-failure mixed on the same road without ceremony.

Rael recognized one group before he reached them. Kira’s party. There were only three now. The archer leaned heavily on Kira, the sleeve on one side of his body empty and hastily bound. The spear-girl walked a step behind, expression tight. They had left with five. They were returning with three and a permanent injury. High-level regeneration or a specialist healer might eventually restore the limb, but that kind of help sat far above the reach of most new awakeners. The archer’s career as a bow user was effectively over unless someone paid a fortune.

Kira’s eyes lifted and met Rael’s. He took in the fact that the lone traveler looked tired but intact—no missing pieces, no desperate lean on a companion. Frustration flickered across Kira’s face. He clicked his tongue once, adjusted his grip on the archer, and turned toward the gate without a word. Rael felt a brief, distant pity and then let it go. The thought rose unbidden—what if I had gone with them?—and he shut it down the same way he had shut down similar thoughts since the First Realm. Party or no party, the Wildlands did not hand out fairness. He might have lost an arm himself. They might have run and left him. After Aurelia, trust was no longer something he spent lightly.

The gate plaza opened around him in a broad, stone-paved space still busy with the last of the day’s traffic. Royal knights in white plate kept the lines moving. Conversations overlapped in a constant low roar. Rael slowed enough to let the voices wash past while he waited his turn.

”...core quality was garbage, but the volume made up for it—”

”I’m telling you the eastern trail is picked clean. We need to push past the second ridge or stop wasting time.”

”Healer prices went up again. Bandage and minor potion almost isn’t worth the coin if you’re only taking scratches.”

”Next time we bring a proper tank. Glass-cannon parties are done after today.”

”Did you see the size of that horned thing near the old watchtower? Level twenty at least. We backed off.”

”Night’s coming. Anyone still out past full dark is asking for it.”

Pointers, complaints, quiet boasts, and hard-earned corrections mixed together. The gate was where the day’s lessons were traded before people scattered to inns, guild halls, or the road back to Titan. Rael listened without joining. Information cost nothing if you kept your ears open.

The bald knight from the morning was still on duty. When Rael stepped up to the checkpoint the man glanced at his pass, then at his face, and the stern line of his mouth eased into something closer to relief.

”Made it back, lone wolf.”

Rael nodded once. He had never held a grudge for the earlier bluntness. The advice had been genuine, even if the delivery was rough. The knight waved him through. Beyond the thick tunnel of the gate the city proper began again.

Ashfall at the edge of night felt different from Ashfall under the full twin suns. Mana-stone street lamps were flickering to life along the main avenues—soft, steady glows that pushed the gathering blue hour back from the paving stones. The light was cleaner than Titan’s older electric systems and carried a faint, pleasant warmth. Shops that had been open to the street began closing shutters or switching to evening lanterns. The smell of cooking drifted from side alleys and open doorways: grilling meat, baking bread, the sharper note of stewed herbs. People moved with the particular energy of a city shifting from work to rest—some still armored and dusty from the Wildlands, others already changed into lighter clothes, voices rising as the day’s tension loosened.

Rael had no intention of returning to Titan tonight. The apartment would still be there. Aetherion was the place he needed to learn, and learning required time spent inside its walls as well as outside them. An inn would do. He could sell the cores and usable remains tomorrow at the Adventurer Guild, or he could absorb some of the mana stones later if he decided pure capacity mattered more than coin in the short term. First priority was a door that locked and a place to sit that was not forest floor.

He stopped a young woman in a wide-brimmed mage’s hat who was walking with two friends.

”Excuse me. Can you tell me where I might find an inn? Something ordinary, not the expensive ones.”

She startled, then actually looked at him. Rael was no longer running Conceal. Black hair, pale skin, the residual sharpness that hard fighting left on a face—whatever she saw made her pause long enough for her friends to notice and drift closer, openly listening. The mage girl recovered with visible effort and answered, voice catching once or twice on the directions. When he thanked her and started to turn away she found another fraction of courage.

”Wait—would you maybe want to go on a hunt sometime? Together?”

Rael considered it for half a second. The city was large enough that the odds of meeting them again by chance were low, but refusing every human contact out of principle was its own kind of stupidity. He might need a party later. Burning bridges for no reason gained him nothing.

”All right. Another time.”

He left them in a small storm of excited whispers and walked the route she had given. The streets grew narrower and warmer with lamp light. The smell of food strengthened until it was impossible to ignore. He followed it to a well-kept inn whose front windows spilled gold onto the street. The sign was simple, the door open, the sound of conversation and cutlery drifting out.

Inside, the common room was already half full. Wooden tables, low-beamed ceiling, mana lamps set in iron brackets along the walls. The air was rich with roasting meat, fresh bread, and something sweet baking in the back. Servers moved between the tables with practiced efficiency. Most of them were ordinary humans. One was not.

She wore a fitted maid uniform that had clearly been altered for effect—shortened skirt, neat apron, the usual details—and a pair of soft, expressive bunny ears that flicked occasionally as she worked. Mixed blood. Rael had known other races existed in Aetherion; this was the first time he had seen one up close. She looked a few years older than him, pretty in a lively, approachable way, and the customers tracked her movement with open appreciation. More than one table seemed to have chosen the inn specifically because she was on shift.

Rael took a side table and waited. She reached him within a minute, order book already in hand, smile ready.

”Hello there, handsome. First time under this roof?”

”Yes.”

”I’m Mira. What can I get for you tonight?”

”Menu, please. And I’d like to know if you have any rooms left.”

Mira’s ears gave a small, amused twitch. She leaned a fraction closer, voice dropping into something playful and deliberately suggestive.

”Well now. My own room happens to be empty. Should I show you the way, or are you only looking for the boring kind of bed?”

Rael blinked once. ”I meant a room at the inn.”

She laughed, light and unoffended, and straightened.

”I know, I know. A girl’s allowed a little fun when someone new and pretty walks in looking half-dead from the Wildlands. Try smiling more—it suits you. Yes, we have rooms. I’ll take you up after you’ve eaten so you don’t fall over on the stairs. Here’s the menu. Take your time. I’ll be back before you finish deciding.”

She set the card down, winked once, and moved off to another table with the same easy sway that explained why the common room stayed full. Rael watched her go for a moment, then looked down at the menu without really seeing it yet. The noise of the inn settled around him—clink of plates, low talk, the occasional burst of laughter, the warm smell of food that had nothing to do with scorched monster meat or trail rations. Outside, full night was arriving. Inside, for the first time since he had stepped through the gate that morning, the world felt briefly simple.

He was still in Aetherion. He was still alive. Tomorrow he would sell what he had taken, check his growth, and decide how much farther into the Wildlands he was ready to push. Tonight he only needed a meal and a locked door.

Mira’s voice rose again somewhere across the room, teasing another customer with the same bright, practiced charm. Rael finally began to read the menu, the mana-lamp light steady on the page, and let the ordinary noise of the inn push the last of the forest silence out of his head.
