Shattered Sanity

(Meanwhile, The Imperial Court, Prime Minister’s Bureau)

Meanwhile, inside the Imperial Court, the office of the Prime Minister received an urgent letter from Vice Principal Chadwick, informing him of the horrifying incident that had occurred at Northwatch Grounds.

However, instead of expressing outrage or satisfaction upon learning that Riven Dawnriver had been arrested, the Prime Minister felt an uncomfortable sensation spreading through his chest, as he immediately recognized the political implications of the report.

Twenty One students had lost their lives within the Imperial Academy, while Gary Ironveil, the son of a Great Ducal household, had been left critically injured, and Riven Dawnriver, another Great Ducal heir, had been taken into custody as the principal suspect.

For an institution that represented the very foundation of the Empire’s relationship with its noble houses, such an incident threatened to become a political disaster of unprecedented proportions.

The Prime Minister carefully placed the letter upon his desk, rubbing his temples as he attempted to consider the situation from every possible angle.

’What a terrible mess. Of all the things that could have happened within the Academy, why did it have to involve two Great Ducal households?’

He wondered, as the implications of their involvement continued to trouble him.

How would Duke Drew Dawnriver react upon learning that his supposed son had been arrested on suspicion of murdering several noble students?

Would he accept the judgement and co-operate with the investigation? Or would he consider this as an insult to his house’s honor?

Would House Ironveil demand punishment for the injuries suffered by Gary, or would the young man’s testimony complicate matters further once he regained consciousness?

After all, according to Chadwick’s report, Riven Dawnriver had personally carried Gary to the Academy’s medical facilities, potentially saving the life of the very individual whose household might otherwise have demanded his execution.

And then there were the families of the deceased students, many of whom possessed considerable influence within the Imperial Court.

Those parents would undoubtedly demand answers, compensation, and punishment, particularly when their children had died inside an institution supposedly protected by some of the strongest Ascendants in the Empire.

Deaths within the Imperial Academy were rare, although they were certainly not unheard of.

Occasionally, students had perished during dangerous training exercises or suffered fatal injuries while attempting breakthroughs beyond their capabilities, and such incidents had generally been accepted as unfortunate consequences of Ascension.

However, twelve students being murdered within the Academy grounds was an entirely different matter.

If the noble houses began questioning whether the Academy could guarantee their children’s safety, the consequences could extend far beyond the immediate investigation.

For generations, the Imperial Academy had served as one of the Crown’s most effective instruments for maintaining relationships with the nobility, bringing the heirs of influential households together beneath Imperial supervision.

But now, if after this incident, those households began withdrawing their children, the Crown would gradually lose one of its most important means of influencing the next generation of noble leadership.

Yet even these concerns were secondary to the political complications surrounding Riven Dawnriver’s arrest.

The Prime Minister was well aware of the Emperor’s longstanding desire to weaken House Dawnriver and eventually replace its leadership with a more obedient subordinate, as he had personally participated in devising the scheme to systematically discredit its descendants and undermine their legitimacy as future heirs.

In fact, it was for this very purpose that he had arranged for the Truth Orb to be dispatched to the Imperial Academy, hoping that its presence would eventually expose some flaw in Riven Dawnriver’s character or conduct that could be used to question his suitability as the future head of House Dawnriver.

However, their intention had always been to accomplish this discreetly, through circumstances that would isolate Riven from the Dawnriver name and make his removal appear to be the natural consequence of his own shortcomings, rather than the result of deliberate interference by the Imperial Crown.

After all, the last thing they wanted was to provoke an open confrontation with Duke Drew, particularly when the Emperor could scarcely afford to appear as though he were personally interfering in the succession affairs of one of the Empire’s Great Ducal households.

’If Riven Dawnriver is guilty and we refuse to prosecute him, the other noble houses will interpret our hesitation as proof that the Crown fears confronting House Dawnriver.’

Such an impression would be disastrous, particularly when the Emperor’s authority depended upon the belief that even the most powerful noble families remained subject to Imperial law.

’However, if the boy is innocent and we proceed against him regardless, Duke Drew might finally possess the legitimate grievance to rebel that he’s been recently searching for.’

The possibility was considerably more alarming.

A Great Ducal household openly challenging the Crown over the wrongful imprisonment of its heir could attract sympathy from other nobles, especially those already dissatisfied with the Emperor’s policies.

And given the number of students who had witnessed the aftermath of the massacre, there was little possibility of suppressing the incident before rumors spread throughout the Empire.

’Which means a public trial may become unavoidable, regardless of whether His Majesty considers that politically convenient.’

The Prime Minister realized, as another uncomfortable thought occurred to him.

A public trial would require testimony, evidence, and explanations concerning how such a massacre had occurred within the Academy despite its supposedly exceptional security.

It could also invite uncomfortable questions regarding the Crown’s relationship with House Dawnriver, particularly if the Duke chose to portray the prosecution as politically motivated.

’And a public trial risks exposing considerably more than we might be willing to reveal.’

He thought, as he folded his hands together and stared silently at the letter.

Eventually, he reached towards the small bell positioned beside his desk and rang it twice, summoning his personal assistant into the bureau.

”Inform the Imperial Secretariat that I require an urgent audience with His Majesty concerning the incident at the Imperial Academy. Also, instruct the investigative department to prepare a suitable delegation, although nobody is to depart for the Academy until I have received the Emperor’s instructions.”

The Prime Minister ordered, as his assistant bowed respectfully and immediately departed to carry out his instructions.

Left alone once again, the Prime Minister looked towards Chadwick’s letter before releasing another exhausted sigh.

’What a shame. Regardless of who committed these murders, I fear the consequences may prove disastrous for the crown.’

He reflected, as he rose from his chair and began preparing for what promised to be an exceptionally unpleasant audience with the Emperor.
