Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The North Relay collapsed around us.

Not all at once.

The chamber came apart in layers.

First, the suspended bridges lost their light. Then the silver threads connecting them to the central platform snapped and fell into the darkness below. The walls split along their old seams, releasing clouds of black dust and fragments of glass. Somewhere beneath the floor, something enormous gave a final groan.

Then the platform disappeared.

I hit the ground hard enough to lose my breath.

For several seconds, I could not hear anything except the ringing inside my skull. My ribs hurt. My left shoulder had gone numb. Something sharp had cut across my cheek, and warm blood was running toward my ear.

Kai was still inside me.

I felt him as a pressure behind my thoughts, faint but present.

Arthur.

I closed my eyes.

I am here.

Are you sure?

The question was weaker than his voice had ever been.

I opened my eyes.

The North Relay was no longer a chamber. It was a broken hollow surrounded by leaning walls. The black seat had shattered into dozens of pieces, and the fragments were buried in the floor like the ribs of a dead animal.

Sarah lay beside a fallen section of bridge. Kael was already pulling the debris away from her. Jax was trapped beneath a metal beam, one arm raised above his face as if he had been waiting for someone to notice him.

Neri had fallen on top of Dorian.

Dorian appeared to be unconscious.

Neri opened one eye.

”Before anyone asks, I was protecting him.”

Jax turned his head toward them.

”You were lying on him.”

”The distinction is not important.”

”It may be important to Dorian.”

”He is unconscious.”

”That does not mean he has no opinions.”

A weak sound came from beneath Neri.

Dorian’s voice was muffled.

”I have several.”

Neri immediately rolled away.

Dorian coughed and pressed one hand against his wound. Blood had soaked through his shirt, but he was breathing.

Marcus stood near the remains of the platform.

He had not been thrown far. The broken chamber seemed to have protected him, or perhaps it had simply recognized him as part of its design. His hands were free. His coat was torn at the shoulder, and a thin line of blood ran across his jaw.

He was staring upward.

I followed his gaze.

The image was still there.

The old face above the broken seat had survived the collapse. It floated beneath the cracked ceiling, made of pale light and dark lines. It had my face, but not my expression. The eyes were colder. The mouth held the same confident curve it had carried when the First Ascent Record opened.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Sarah stood.

She looked at me first.

Not at the image.

At me.

Her sword was gone, but she had drawn a short blade from her belt. Kael moved beside her, ready to stop her if necessary.

”You knew,” she said.

My throat was dry.

”Knew what?”

”That face.”

”I recognized it.”

”It was your face.”

”Yes.”

”And the record called it the first keeper. The first architect. The person who wrote the role.”

”Yes.”

Sarah took one step toward me.

The ground shifted beneath us.

Kael caught her arm, but she pulled free.

”Are you Arthur?”

The question entered the broken chamber more sharply than the collapse had.

Kai moved inside my mind.

Do not answer quickly.

Sarah noticed the pause.

”Why are you hesitating?”

”I am not.”

”You are.”

”I am deciding how much of the truth you are asking for.”

”I am asking whether you are the person who came into the Tower with us, or another system wearing his memories.”

The image above us flickered.

For the first time, its eyes turned away from Marcus and looked directly at me.

A thin voice moved through the ruins.

”The current designation is Arthur.”

Sarah raised her blade toward the image.

”I was not asking you.”

The image did not respond.

I looked at Sarah.

”I am Arthur.”

”That is not enough.”

”It is the truth.”

”The image says the same thing without saying it.”

”The image is a record.”

”You do not know that.”

”No. I know what I remember.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

”Memory can be manufactured.”

The words struck deeper than she intended.

Not because they were new.

Because the Tower had already whispered them inside my mind.

You are not the original.

You are a continuation.

A useful copy.

A role wearing a name.

Kai’s presence pressed against my thoughts.

You are not a copy.

I know.

Do you?

I looked at my hands. They were shaking, but they were mine. I remembered the scar along my thumb from the first systems lab. I remembered the smell of burnt wiring in the old research building. I remembered the day I left the Company. I remembered the decision to enter the Tower.

Those memories could have been false.

But memory was not the only thing I had.

I had made choices the original Arthur would never have made.

I had refused the role.

I had named Kai as a person instead of a sacrifice.

I had chosen to preserve a life I could not control.

”I am Arthur,” I said. ”The image may be connected to me. It may be a record of someone I was, a record of someone the Company altered, or a fragment tied to the Architect Authority. But it is not proof that I am a copy.”

Kael studied the image.

”He is right.”

Sarah glanced at him.

”You are certain?”

”No.”

She frowned.

”Then why say it?”

”Because uncertainty is not evidence. The image has your face, but it has not shown us a memory that only a copy could possess. It has made a claim. That is all.”

Jax lifted his free hand from beneath the metal beam.

”I would like to add that if Arthur were secretly a copy, he has been doing a very poor job of behaving like the person who made the Tower.”

Sarah looked at him.

”How is that helpful?”

”The original architect apparently sacrificed children to preserve his authority. Arthur has spent most of the day trying to prevent everyone from being sacrificed. The similarities are limited.”

”You are trapped under a beam.”

”That does not make me wrong. It only makes me uncomfortable.”

Kael moved toward him.

”Stop talking.”

”I talk when I am frightened.”

”You talk when you are breathing.”

”That too.”

Kael and Sarah lifted the beam together. Jax rolled free and immediately stood, then sat back down when his leg failed beneath him.

”I meant to do that,” he said.

Neri looked toward the ceiling.

”The image is fading.”

The old face had begun to break apart. Its edges dissolved into pale dust, but the voice remained.

”The record is incomplete.”

Marcus stepped forward.

”What does that mean?”

The image turned toward him.

”The first keeper was not the first architect.”

Marcus stopped.

Sarah’s blade lowered slightly.

”Then who was he?”

The image looked at me again.

”The first architect was the one who survived the design.”

The words repeated through the chamber, each echo changing slightly.

The one who survived.

The one who remained.

The one who was left behind.

Kai became very still inside my mind.

Then the image vanished.

The last fragment of light fell toward the broken platform and disappeared before touching the ground.

For several seconds, the only sound was the movement of dust.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

”We have to leave.”

Sarah turned toward him.

”You knew that the relay would collapse.”

”I knew it might.”

”You knew it would open something.”

”I knew the Tower had contingency paths.”

”And you did not mention them.”

Marcus looked at the shattered walls.

”You would have refused to use them.”

”We still might.”

”Then remain here.”

The ground beneath us moved.

A deep vibration traveled through the ruins, stronger than the tremors that had come before. Dust fell from the ceiling. Far below, metal structures began collapsing one after another.

Dorian pushed himself upright.

”The relay did not destroy the lower region.”

Neri helped him stand.

”It only redirected the pressure.”

”Toward what?” Sarah asked.

Dorian pointed to the wall behind the remains of the platform.

A vertical line had appeared in the black stone.

It had not been there before.

The line widened.

The wall opened like two plates separating beneath pressure, revealing a narrow passage filled with gray light. There were no stairs. No bridges. No visible floor.

Only a path rising at an impossible angle into the Tower.

Above it, letters appeared one by one.

SILENT ASCENT.

Jax stared at the opening.

”That sounds welcoming.”

”It is not meant to be welcoming,” Marcus said.

”Then it should stop using a name that sounds like a luxury hotel.”

Kael looked into the passage.

”Can it take us to the surface?”

Marcus shook his head.

”No.”

”Why not?”

”The Company sealed the upper routes after the relay went dark.”

Sarah’s grip tightened around her short blade.

”They sealed the Tower while their own people were still inside?”

”The people inside were considered expendable.”

”You say that as if you are not one of them.”

Marcus faced her.

”I am one of the people who understands how they think. That is why you are still alive.”

”For now,” Jax said.

Marcus ignored him.

”The Silent Ascent is the only open route. It will lead us above the lower region, but not to the surface. The path was designed for transfers between controlled layers.”

”What happens there?” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

His expression changed when he saw the mark still glowing faintly beneath my feet.

”The Tower tests whether a person is carrying an unauthorized truth.”

”What does that mean?”

”It means the ascent will not attack us immediately.”

Jax raised a finger.

”That is the most threatening way anyone has ever said the word immediately.”

Dorian coughed.

”The Silent Ascent does not create lies. It isolates fears. Each person hears the version of the truth they are least prepared to accept.”

Sarah looked toward the passage.

”And if we refuse to listen?”

”Then the path will remain closed.”

”If we listen?”

”It may let us pass.”

”May?”

Dorian’s mouth twisted.

”The Tower has never been generous with certainty.”

Kai spoke inside my mind.

Arthur.

I am here.

We need to go through.

I know.

The door is still open.

I felt it then. The doorway in my mind had not disappeared after the collapse. It remained behind my thoughts, and beyond it I could sense the dead city, the children, and the pressure of something waiting farther away.

I cannot leave you here.

You are not leaving me.

The path will separate us.

It may try.

You heard Dorian.

The Tower will show us what we fear.

Kai was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, If it shows me a world where I get my body back and lose everyone else, I may believe it.

”Why?” I whispered.

Sarah looked at me.

”What?”

I realized I had spoken aloud.

”Nothing.”

Kai answered before I could stop him.

Because I have spent twelve years wanting one thing. The Tower will only need to show me the cost.

I looked toward the open path.

And what if the cost is real?

Then we decide whether it is worth paying. Together.

The words settled between us with a weight that felt more solid than the walls.

I stepped toward the passage.

Sarah caught my arm.

”If the path tries to convince you of something, do not hide it from us.”

”I will not.”

”You have hidden things before.”

”So have you.”

Her eyes narrowed.

”That is not a denial.”

”It is a promise that I will not do it here.”

She released my arm, but she did not move away.

Kael went first. His boots touched the gray light, and the passage responded with a low, muted tone. No echo followed.

The Silent Ascent had already taken his voice.

Sarah followed him.

Then Neri supported Dorian across the threshold. Jax limped behind them, muttering that the Tower had a serious problem with normal architecture.

Marcus waited beside me.

”You should go before the path changes its mind.”

”You are coming with us.”

”I know.”

”Why?”

He looked at the place where the image had vanished.

”Because the record opened, but it did not reveal the name of the person who designed the first role.”

”You think the answer is above us.”

”I think the person who knows it is above us.”

”Who?”

Marcus’s eyes met mine.

”Someone the Company removed from every official record.”

Before I could ask more, the gray light flickered.

A sound came from the passage.

Not a voice.

A breath.

The kind of breath made by someone standing just beyond a closed door.

Kai pressed against my thoughts.

Do you know that sound?

No.

You do.

The word carried no explanation, only certainty.

I stepped into the Silent Ascent.

The world changed without moving.

The ruins of the North Relay remained behind us, but they looked distant, as if seen through deep water. Ahead, the path continued upward through a corridor without walls. Gray light surrounded us on every side. There was no floor beneath our feet, yet each step landed with quiet resistance.

No one spoke.

Not because we had chosen silence.

Because the path had taken our voices.

The first thing I heard was Sarah.

Not beside me.

Somewhere ahead.

”You were never Arthur.”

I turned toward her.

She was walking a few steps away, her face blank.

Her mouth had not moved.

The voice continued.

”You only learned to answer when someone called the name.”

I tried to speak, but no sound came out.

Kai heard it too.

The Tower is using your fear.

My fear?

That you are not real.

I looked at my hands again.

The fingers were older than the hands in the memories. The scars were where I remembered them. The pain in my ribs was immediate and undeniable.

A copy could feel pain.

A record could remember scars.

But a copy would not have to choose what to do with the doubt.

The voice became louder.

”You were built from the Architect Authority. You were given a name because the system required a speaker. You were given memories because obedience is easier when it believes it has a past.”

I kept walking.

The path rose beneath me.

Kai’s voice trembled.

Do not listen.

I am listening.

Why?

Because fear is information.

The voice shifted.

Now it spoke with my own voice.

”If you are truly Arthur, tell Kai what happened to his body.”

Kai went silent.

I felt the question move between us.

His body was alive.

It had carried both of us.

But where was the boundary between the body and the person? If Kai reclaimed it completely, what would remain for me? A memory? A role? A soul without a place to stand?

The Tower spoke again.

”He will not give you a body. He will take yours.”

Kai answered before I could.

I know.

The path darkened.

”He will leave you behind.”

I know.

”You will disappear.”

Kai’s voice grew stronger.

That is the agreement.

The voice became a whisper.

”Agreements change when people survive long enough to regret them.”

Kai turned toward me.

For the first time since entering the passage, I could see his face clearly—not outside, but inside the doorway of my mind. He stood in the dead city among the children, holding the wooden bird against his chest.

Do you regret it? I asked.

He looked at the bird.

I regret that I want my body back.

That is not what I asked.

I regret that wanting it makes me afraid of losing you.

The path shuddered.

The voice tried to return, but Kai continued.

I was a child when they took me. I did not consent to losing my body. I did not consent to carrying the Tower. But I chose to let you stay when you could have forced me silent.

I looked at him.

You chose that?

Every time I answered you, I chose it.

The gray corridor brightened.

Behind us, the others began hearing their own truths. Sarah’s face was wet with tears, though she made no sound. Kael was holding one hand over his chest. Jax had stopped walking entirely, staring at something only he could see. Neri stood beside Dorian, repeating the same word without sound.

Stay.

Stay.

Stay.

The path did not make us stronger.

It only removed the distance between us and the things we refused to name.

At last, the voice asked me the final question.

”If Arthur is the name of the person who created the system, and Kai is the person sacrificed by it, which one of you deserves to continue?”

The answer rose before I could shape it.

Neither of us deserves anything from the Tower.

The path stopped.

The silence broke.

Sound returned in a violent rush. Sarah gasped. Kael swore. Jax fell onto one knee. Dorian gripped the wall that had not existed a moment before.

Ahead of us stood a massive gate made of black metal and pale stone.

Beyond it, I could see the upper levels of the Tower: distant platforms, moving lights, and enormous rings turning around a central shaft.

The others gathered behind me.

Marcus looked at the gate and went pale.

Letters appeared across its surface.

**THREE DAYS REMAIN UNTIL SEPARATION BECOMES MANDATORY.**

Kai read the words inside my mind.

Less than three days.

I know.

A second line appeared beneath the first.

**TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP: UNSTABLE.**

Sarah looked at me.

”Can it be done?”

”We do not know.”

”Then we find out before the Tower decides for us.”

The gate began to open.

A voice came from the level above.

It was not the voice of the old image.

It was not the voice of the Witness.

It was not the voice of the Tower.

It knew my name before the Company did.

”Arthur.”

I froze.

Kai moved closer inside my mind.

The voice spoke again.

”You took longer than I expected.”

Marcus stepped backward.

For the first time since we had met him, genuine fear appeared on his face.

Sarah noticed.

”Who is that?”

Marcus did not answer.

The voice came from beyond the gate.

”I remember the day you built the first door.”

My pulse stopped.

The gate opened wider, revealing only darkness above the Silent Ascent.

The voice continued.

”And I remember why you built it.”

The Tower trembled.

A final message appeared across the archway.

**The third bell has not begun.**

The words faded.

A second line formed beneath them.

**It has already been answered.**

The voice from the upper level spoke once more.

”Come up, Arthur. We have very little time before Kai remembers who closed the door.”

Kai’s presence tightened around my thoughts.

I looked into the darkness beyond the gate.

Then I stepped forward.

The ascent continued.
