Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The red heart exploded.

Kai felt the world disappear beneath his feet.

A wall of crimson light struck him in the chest and launched him across the chamber. He crashed through three metal pillars before hitting the far wall. The impact drove the air from his lungs. His fingers went numb, and the crimson sword slipped from his hand.

”Kai!” Sarah screamed.

The chamber shook again.

Above them, thousands of red threads snapped at once. Every stolen memory inside the plant burst into the air, filling the room with voices and light. Laughter, crying, prayers, wedding vows, final words, and terrified screams collided until no single voice could be understood.

Kai tried to stand.

His legs refused to move.

The red needle inside his stomach had spread across his body. It felt as if hot wires were wrapped around his bones.

Through the storm of memories, he saw Dorian.

The former Executioner was still inside the broken heart. His body had been pulled halfway into the red mass, and black cracks covered his face.

”Dorian!” Kai shouted.

The man opened one eye.

”Leave,” he said.

Kai pushed himself away from the wall. ”Not without you.”

”You don’t have time.”

A deep metallic groan passed through the chamber.

The floor split open.

Beneath it, an enormous machine began to rise. It had no clear shape. It was a collection of wheels, chains, pipes, and glass chambers turning around a central column of red light.

The second plant was not dying.

It was changing.

Dorian looked toward the machine. ”The heart was only the lock.”

Sarah helped Kai stand. ”What is behind it?”

Dorian’s voice became strained. ”The main reservoir.”

Kael lifted his sword and shielded the unconscious residents behind him. ”What happens if it opens?”

”The district loses everything.”

Jax stared at the rising machine. ”Everything means what?”

Dorian looked at Kai.

”Memories. Names. Faces. Every connection that makes a person human.”

Kai looked at the broken containers around the chamber. The memories inside them were already being dragged toward the red column.

The plant was not trying to kill the residents.

It was trying to empty them.

A woman lying beside the wall suddenly sat up. She looked at her hands with panic.

”Who am I?” she whispered.

A man nearby turned toward her.

”Do I know you?”

His wife grabbed his arm. ”You’re my husband.”

He stared at her blankly. ”What is a husband?”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Kai looked at the machine.

”Dorian. How do we stop it?”

Dorian clenched his teeth. The red heart was still attached to his back.

”There are three wheels around the central column. They must be stopped at the same time.”

”Can you stop one?”

”I can stop two.”

Kai looked at him. ”And the third?”

”You.”

The machine roared.

Three enormous wheels began turning around the red column. Each wheel was covered with hundreds of metal teeth, and every rotation pulled more memories from the broken containers.

Kael stepped forward. ”I’ll take the left wheel.”

Sarah raised her staff. ”I’ll take the right.”

Jax looked at the massive central wheel. ”And I’ll take the largest one?”

Kai picked up the crimson sword.

”No. I’ll take the largest one.”

Jax pointed toward Kai’s bleeding side. ”You can barely stand.”

”I noticed.”

”You’re going to die.”

”Then try to make it inconvenient.”

The machine released a shockwave.

The three wheels separated and began spinning faster. Red chains shot from the floor and wrapped around the group.

Kael cut through the chains around him and charged left. His shield was broken, but he used the sword with both hands. He reached the first wheel and struck its outer teeth.

The wheel did not slow.

Instead, one of the teeth snapped toward him like a jaw.

Kael raised his sword, but the impact threw him into the floor.

”Kael!” Sarah shouted.

”I’m fine!” he roared, even as blood ran from his shoulder. ”Stop watching me and do your part!”

Sarah turned toward the right wheel.

A red figure emerged from the machine. It had the shape of a woman, but its body was made entirely from stolen memories. Its face changed every second. A child. An old man. A soldier. A mother.

It attacked Sarah with a blade made of red light.

Sarah blocked with her staff. The impact forced her backward.

”You cannot stop us,” the creature said with a hundred voices. ”Every life belongs to the plant.”

Sarah pushed against the blade. ”No life belongs to anyone.”

The creature struck her again.

She fell to one knee.

Jax appeared behind it and drove both daggers into its back. The creature turned, its face becoming his own.

”You abandoned your brother,” it whispered.

Jax froze.

The creature pulled one dagger from its body and stabbed him in the shoulder.

Jax cried out and fell beside Sarah.

The creature raised its blade.

A burst of white light struck its chest.

Sarah stood behind Jax, blood running from her forehead.

”Don’t use my memories against me,” she said. ”You didn’t earn them.”

The light exploded.

The creature broke apart into hundreds of red fragments.

Sarah grabbed Jax by the collar and pulled him away from the wheel.

”Can you move?”

Jax clutched his shoulder. ”I can complain.”

”Good. Complain while cutting.”

Across the chamber, Kai reached the central wheel.

It was larger than a building. Its lower edge scraped against the floor while the upper half disappeared into darkness. Every tooth carried a different memory. He saw a boy holding a wooden sword. He saw two sisters dancing in a kitchen. He saw a dying man whispering the name of someone he loved.

The wheel turned.

Kai lifted the crimson sword and struck one of the teeth.

The blade shattered.

The recoil threw Kai backward. He rolled across the floor and slammed into a broken container.

The memory inside it escaped and entered his body.

He saw a young woman standing on a dock. She was waiting for a ship that would never return. She held a letter against her chest and kept smiling because she had promised not to cry.

Kai felt her hope, her loneliness, and the moment she finally understood that she had been abandoned.

Then the memory vanished.

Kai lay on the floor, breathing hard.

The wheel continued turning.

Dorian’s voice reached him through the noise.

”Don’t fight the wheel.”

Kai looked toward the heart.

Dorian was sinking deeper into the red mass.

”Then what do I fight?” Kai shouted.

”Your place in it.”

Kai looked at the central wheel again.

The memories were not powering the machine by themselves. They were moving along a fixed path, following the teeth as the wheel turned. Every tooth carried a different life, but the wheel forced all of them in the same direction.

The machine did not need strength.

It needed obedience.

Kai stood.

His vision was dark at the edges, and his left leg dragged behind him. He walked toward the wheel while the red needle inside him burned hotter.

A tooth swung toward his head.

He stepped under it.

Another came from the side.

He dropped to the floor.

A third struck his shoulder and tore through his coat. Kai gritted his teeth and continued moving.

He was not fast enough to destroy the wheel.

He did not need to be.

He only needed to reach the center.

The wheel opened as it turned, revealing a narrow space between the moving teeth. Kai waited for the gap, then threw himself into it.

Metal scraped his back.

His ribs cracked.

He forced himself forward and reached the central axle.

It was covered in red threads.

Kai wrapped both hands around it.

The machine pulled at his memories.

He saw his childhood home.

He saw his mother smiling.

He saw Elara running toward him.

He saw himself leaving them behind again and again.

The machine whispered with their voices.

”You will always leave.”

Kai closed his eyes.

”I know.”

The wheel pulled harder.

”You will always fail.”

”I know.”

”You are not a hero.”

Kai opened his eyes.

”I never said I was.”

He pulled the red threads away from the axle.

The pain was immediate. Each thread tore through his hands and dragged a memory out of him. His first day at the Tower. His mother’s voice. The face of his father, which he had not seen in years.

Kai nearly let go.

Then he remembered Elara’s warning from the false house.

Run.

Not because she wanted him to abandon her.

Because she knew the place was dangerous.

Kai wrapped the threads around his arms and pulled them in the opposite direction.

The wheel screamed.

Outside, Kael struck the left wheel with the broken edge of his sword. The metal teeth crushed his blade, but the wheel slowed for half a second.

Sarah and Jax reached the right wheel together. Sarah held back the red figures while Jax cut the threads between the teeth.

”One more!” Jax shouted.

Kai grunted as the central wheel began to resist him.

”Now!” he roared.

Kael drove his shoulder into the left wheel.

Sarah released every remaining spell into the right wheel.

Jax cut the final connection.

Kai pulled with everything his damaged body had left.

The central wheel stopped.

For one breath, the entire plant became silent.

Then the three wheels shattered.

The red column split from top to bottom. A wave of memories rushed through the chamber, returning to the people who had lost them. The man who had forgotten his wife grabbed her face and began to cry. The little girl near the wall whispered her own name and smiled when it returned to her.

The plant collapsed inward.

Kai was thrown out of the central wheel and landed near the broken heart.

Dorian fell beside him.

The red mass had disappeared from his body, but his skin was gray, and he was barely breathing.

Kai crawled toward him.

”Dorian.”

The former Executioner opened his eyes.

”Did we stop it?”

”For now.”

Dorian looked at the ceiling. ”That is not enough.”

”What do you mean?”

A deep bell rang above them.

The walls of the chamber turned transparent.

Far beneath the district, a second red column had awakened. Then a third. Then a fourth, spreading through the ground like roots beneath a dying tree.

Sarah stared at the lights. ”There are more plants.”

Dorian shook his head slowly.

”No. Those are not plants.”

Kael walked toward the transparent wall. ”Then what are they?”

Dorian looked at Kai.

”The district was only one branch.”

The red lights continued spreading beneath the city.

”Every major city has one.”

Kai forced himself to stand.

His entire body was shaking now. He had no mask, no proper weapon, and barely enough strength to remain upright.

But he could still hear his mother’s voice above them.

He could still see Elara’s face.

And somewhere beneath the city, the Company had built thousands of buried hearts.

A voice filled the chamber.

It was not the Adjuster this time.

It was the Director of Compliance.

”You have destroyed one reservoir, Kai. Do you understand what that means?”

Kai looked up at the unseen speaker.

”It means I know where to start.”

The Director laughed softly.

”No. It means you have made yourself responsible for every life connected to the others.”

A red image appeared in the air.

Kai’s mother and Elara stood in a dark room. Their hands were tied, but they were alive.

Behind them stood dozens of Company agents.

The Director continued, ”Destroy the remaining reservoirs, and the bindings around your family will tighten. Leave them intact, and the cities will continue losing their memories.”

Kai stared at the image.

Sarah stepped beside him. ”He’s trying to force you into a choice.”

Kai’s voice was quiet. ”I know.”

Kael tightened his grip on his sword. ”What are we going to do?”

Kai looked at Dorian, who was still lying on the floor. He looked at the frightened residents, the broken containers, and the red lights spreading beneath the city.

Then he looked at the image of his family.

His hands trembled.

He was not cold enough to ignore them.

He was not strong enough to save everyone.

But he had stopped pretending that those two facts could excuse doing nothing.

Kai raised his head.

”Director,” he said, ”you made one mistake.”

The image flickered.

The Director’s voice became quieter. ”What mistake?”

”You showed me the whole map.”

Kai turned toward the eastern wall.

Behind it, faint red lines formed a path beneath the city, leading toward a massive structure far below.

The main reservoir.

The Director went silent.

Kai picked up the broken remains of his sword.

”Keep my family alive,” he said. ”I’m coming for the heart.”

The red image vanished.

Above the city, every light went out at once.

In the darkness below, something enormous began moving beneath the streets.

Kai looked at his friends.

”Get the residents out.”

Sarah shook her head. ”And you?”

Kai turned toward the passage leading deeper underground.

”I’m going to find the main reservoir.”

Kael stepped beside him. ”You’re not going alone.”

Jax raised one dagger despite his wounded shoulder. ”I’m still complaining, so I’m still alive.”

Sarah tightened her grip on her staff.

Dorian opened his eyes again.

”Wait,” he whispered.

Kai stopped.

Dorian looked toward the darkness beneath the chamber.

”There is something down there that even the Company fears.”

”What?” Kai asked.

Dorian’s face became pale.

”The first person who escaped.”

A sound rose from the depths.

Not a machine.

Not a monster.

A man laughing alone in the dark.
