Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The white was absolute. There was no floor, no ceiling, no horizon. Kai felt like he was floating in a vat of milk, his body the only spot of color in a world that had been bleached of its existence. Sunbringer’s golden glow was a dim, pathetic spark against the infinite brightness.

Clara? Leo? Kai shouted, but his voice didn’t echo. It just fell flat, swallowed by the void.

They aren’t here, Kai, the Architect said.

The man in the charcoal suit was standing a few feet away, his white quill pen resting behind his ear. He looked perfectly at home in the nothingness. He was sitting in a high-backed leather chair that hadn’t been there a second ago, crossing one leg over the other.

I’ve moved them to the ’Draft Folder,’ the Architect continued, tapping a finger against his chin. They were becoming too noisy. Especially the glitch. He was never supposed to survive the first act, let alone break into my library.

Bring them back, Kai growled, gripping the hilt of his sword.

The Architect sighed, a sound of genuine boredom. You still don’t get it. I don’t ’bring things back.’ I edit. I delete. I refine. You are a smudge on a masterpiece, Kai. A character who forgot his place. Do you know what I do with characters who stop following the plot?

I’m not a character, Kai spat. I’m the guy holding the knife at your throat.

The Architect laughed, a dry, academic sound. A knife? You think that sword is yours? I wrote the metal. I wrote the light. I even wrote the hand that holds it. You are fighting me with my own ink.

He stood up, and the white void suddenly filled with lines of text, swirling around Kai like a cyclone.

[Character Name: Kai]

[Role: Extra #4402]

[Status: To be Deleted.]

Kai felt a sudden, agonizing coldness spreading through his limbs. His feet began to dissolve into white mist. His hands were turning into faint, grey sketches.

[Current Screen Time: 543 Hours -> 300 Hours.]

[Deletion Progress: 25%...]

No! Kai screamed, falling to his knees.

It’s painless, really, the Architect said, walking toward him. You’ll just cease to be. The Audience will forget you by the next Chapter. They’ll be too focused on the new Hero I’m drafting. A better Aidan. A more obedient one.

Kai looked at the red shard in his hand. It was the only thing that wasn’t turning white. It pulsed with a deep, angry crimson, like a heartbeat.

The Audience... Kai whispered, his voice cracking.

What was that? the Architect asked, leaning down.

The Audience! Kai roared, looking up with eyes that were now bleeding red light. They aren’t watching the new Hero! They’re watching me!

The Architect paused, his hand hovering over his quill.

Check the ratings, Architect! Kai challenged, a dark, desperate smile on his face. Check the engagement! They didn’t come for the ’Perfect Hero.’ They came for the ’Glitch.’ They want to see the Extra who spits in the face of God!

The Architect’s static-grey eyes flickered. He looked up, his gaze piercing through the white void to the invisible realm above. For the first time, a frown touched his lips.

The engagement... it’s at an all-time high, the Architect muttered, his voice filled with disbelief. They... they’re rooting for the error?

They love the chaos! Kai said, struggling to stand as his legs solidified once more. If you delete me now, you lose the Audience. You lose the ’Revenue.’ You lose the very reason you write this world!

The Architect turned back to Kai, his expression shifting from boredom to a cold, calculating fury. You think you can blackmail me with the Audience? I am the one who provides the content! I can give them whatever I want!

Then why haven’t you? Kai asked, taking a step forward. Why did you let me live this long? Why did you send an Auditor instead of just deleting the sector? Because you’re afraid of them, aren’t you? You’re just as much a slave to the Script as I am. You just have a better chair.

The Architect’s face twisted into a mask of rage. He grabbed his quill and slashed it through the air. A wave of black ink erupted, turning into a massive, three-headed dragon made of jagged text.

[Entity: The Plot Device - Rank: SSS]

[Objective: Forced Conclusion.]

If they want a spectacle, I’ll give them one! the Architect screamed. I’ll give them the ’Hero’s Tragic Fall’! I’ll give them a death so beautiful they’ll cry for weeks!

The dragon roared, its breath a storm of erasing energy. Kai raised Sunbringer, but he knew he couldn’t win a head-on fight. Not against a creature that was literally the manifestation of the Plot.

Narrative Authority: True Name Activation! Kai screamed.

He slammed the red shard into the blade of Sunbringer. The golden sword turned a deep, blood-red, the metal screaming as it absorbed the Architect’s own name.

[Alert: True Name ’Elias Thorne’ recognized.]

[System Overload: The Author is now a ’Targetable Entity.’]

Elias Thorne? Kai laughed, blood dripping from his mouth. That’s your name? You sound like a failed novelist from a backwater planet.

The Architect—Elias—froze. His face went pale, his quill trembling in his hand. How... how do you know that name? That name is outside the Script! It’s forbidden!

I found it in the trash, Elias! Kai said, lunging forward. I found it in the plot holes you were too lazy to fix!

Kai didn’t attack the dragon. He flew straight at Elias Thorne. The dragon lunged, its teeth snapping inches from Kai’s heels, but Kai was faster. He was burning his Screen Time like a madman.

[Current Screen Time: 300 Hours -> 100 Hours.]

One strike, Kai thought. Just one strike to the ’Author’s Ego.’

He reached Elias. The Architect tried to write a shield, but the red blade of Sunbringer sliced through the ink like it was water. The sword didn’t hit Elias’s chest. It hit his notebook.

*CRACK!*

The leather-bound book shattered. Thousands of pages flew into the white void, turning into birds, monsters, and fragments of forgotten memories. The white void began to crack, revealing the ruins of the Library underneath.

Elias Thorne fell back, his suit torn, his glasses shattered. He looked at Kai with pure, unadulterated terror. You... you broke the Ledger...

I broke the contract, Kai said, standing over him, the red sword at the Architect’s throat.

Suddenly, Leo and Clara reappeared, falling onto the rubble of the Library. They looked dazed, but they were solid.

Kai! Clara shouted, running to him. What... what happened?

I negotiated, Kai said, his eyes never leaving Elias.

The Architect looked at Leo and Clara, then at the invisible Audience above. He began to laugh, a broken, hysterical sound. You think you’ve won? You’ve just triggered a ’Hiatus,’ Kai! The world is going to freeze! The Audience will leave!

Then let it freeze, Kai said. I’d rather be a statue in a dead world than a puppet in yours.

[Audience Reaction: Shocked! ”He broke the Author!” / ”Is the story ending?” / ”5-Star Rating!”]

[Screen Time Gained: +1000 Hours (The God-Slayer Bonus)]

The red shard in Kai’s hand pulsed one last time before dissolving into his skin. His Screen Time meter shot up, the numbers spinning too fast to read.

[Current Screen Time: 1100 Hours.]

Elias Thorne looked at the meter, then at Kai. Fine, he whispered. You want to write your own story? Then do it. But remember, Kai... every story needs a Villain. And if it’s not me... it’ll be someone you love.

The Architect vanished in a swirl of black ink, leaving only his broken quill behind.

The white void was gone. The Library was a ruin. But the sky above was no longer blue. It was a blank, grey screen, waiting for the first word to be written.

Kai turned to Leo and Clara. They were looking at him with a mixture of fear and hope.

What now? Leo asked, his voice solid and clear.

Kai looked at the broken quill on the floor. He picked it up and handed it to Clara.

Now, Kai said, we write the next Chapter. And this time, there are no extras.
