Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The entrance to the mine looked like a scarred wound in the side of the mountain. The violet energy from Valerius’s attack still lingered in the air, making the hair on Kai’s arms stand up. He held Sunbringer high, but the golden light was flickering, struggling against the encroaching Narrative Gravity.

Are you sure about this, Kai? Leo asked, his hand white-knuckled on the hilt of his own sword. The guys back at the camp... they think we’re running away.

Let them think what they want, Leo, Kai said, stepping into the darkness. Their opinions are just background noise. We’re here for the signal.

Signal? What signal?

The place where the story doesn’t make sense, Kai said, his eyes scanning the walls with Script Insight.

They walked deeper, past the area where Kai had collapsed the ceiling on the Matriarch. The rubble was still there, but as they moved further into the ’Forgotten Vein,’ the environment began to change. The stone walls were no longer just stone. In some places, they looked like sheets of parchment, covered in faint, blurry handwriting that shifted whenever Kai tried to read it.

Kai, look at the walls, Leo whispered, his voice trembling. Is that... writing?

It’s the rough draft, Kai said, his heart hammering. We’re reaching the edge of the rendered world.

They reached a massive cavern that shouldn’t have existed according to the camp’s maps. In the center, there was no rock, no crystals, just a swirling vortex of black ink and white light. It looked like a hole torn in a painting.

[Location: Narrative Void - A Plot Hole detected.]

[Warning: Reality stability is at 40%. Prolonged exposure will result in Character Deletion.]

Is that the exit? Leo asked, stepping toward the vortex.

No, Kai grabbed his shoulder, pulling him back. That’s the trash bin. Anything the Author doesn’t like gets thrown in there. But look closer, Leo. Look at the edges.

Kai pointed Sunbringer at the rim of the vortex. There, floating in the air like dust motes, were glowing golden fragments. They looked like pieces of a broken mirror, each one containing a few words of text.

[...and then the Successor realizes...]

[...Clara’s death was necessary for...]

[...the final betrayal by the loyal...]

Kai’s eyes widened as he read the fragments. The Script was literally falling apart here.

What does it say? Leo asked, squinting at the glowing shards. I can’t make out the words.

It says the Author is a hack, Kai said, his voice dripping with venom. It says our lives are just a series of ’necessary tragedies’ to make the readers cry.

Suddenly, a loud, screeching sound echoed through the cavern. It wasn’t the sound of a beast; it was the sound of a pen scratching violently across paper. From the vortex, a creature emerged. It was made of twisted ink and sharp, angular lines, looking like a half-finished sketch that had come to life.

[Entity: Narrative Eraser - Level: Unknown]

[Role: Cleanup Crew.]

Leo, get back! Kai shouted, drawing Sunbringer. This thing doesn’t have a health bar. It just erases whatever it touches!

The Eraser lunged, its ink-stained claws leaving black streaks in the air. Kai parried, but the moment Sunbringer touched the creature, a chunk of the golden light vanished. The sword was being ’unwritten.’

[Alert: Sunbringer is losing durability! Narrative integrity is failing!]

I have to end this quickly, Kai thought.

He didn’t attack the Eraser. He looked at the glowing fragments floating around the vortex. He saw one that read: [...the mine was empty of all life...]

If I can change that one line, Kai realized, I can unwrite the Eraser.

Leo! Distract it! Kai commanded.

Distract it? With what? It’s a giant ink blot!

Just keep it moving! I need ten seconds!

Leo roared and charged, his shield clashing against the Eraser’s angular limbs. He was tossed aside like a ragdoll, his shield cracking, but he bought the time Kai needed.

Kai leaped toward the glowing fragment. He didn’t use his sword. He used Narrative Authority, burning another 50 hours of his precious Screen Time.

[Current Screen Time: 456 Hours.]

Kai grabbed the fragment with his bare hand. The golden text burned his palm, but he didn’t let go. He closed his eyes and focused all his will on the words.

”The mine isn’t empty,” Kai whispered, his voice echoing with the power of a creator. ”The mine is a sanctuary!”

The fragment flared with a blinding light. The text shifted, the letters rearranging themselves in his hand.

[Fragment Updated: ...the mine became a sanctuary for the self-aware...]

The Narrative Eraser froze. Its ink-stained body began to dissolve, turning back into harmless droplets that fell to the floor. The vortex slowed down, its violent swirling turning into a calm, steady glow.

[Alert: Plot Hole Stabilized.]

[Reward: Script Fragment - ’The Author’s True Name.’]

[Screen Time Gained: +100 Hours (Creative Rewrite Bonus)]

Kai fell to his knees, gasping for air. His hand was charred black, but in his palm sat a small, crystalline shard that pulsed with a deep, red light.

We... we’re alive? Leo asked, picking himself up from the floor. You did it again, Kai. You just... deleted it.

I didn’t delete it, Leo, Kai said, looking at the red shard. I rewrote it. But look at your arm.

Leo looked down. His left arm was partially transparent, the skin looking like a faint pencil sketch.

What is this? Leo gasped, his voice filled with panic. Kai, what’s happening to me?

The price, Kai said, his voice hollow. By changing the Script to save us, I made you ’less real’ in the eyes of the world. You’re becoming a glitch, Leo. Just like me.

Leo stared at his arm, then at Kai. He didn’t look angry. He just looked tired. If being real means dying for a lie, he whispered, then I’d rather be a glitch with you.

Kai felt a pang of something he hadn’t felt in a long time—guilt. He had saved Leo, but at what cost? He was dragging his only friend into the void with him.

[Audience Reaction: Heartbroken! ”Leo is fading!” / ”Kai is a monster for doing this!”]

We have to go back, Kai said, standing up. I have the fragment. I know how to find him now.

Find who?

The one who thinks he can play with our lives, Kai said, his eyes reflecting the red glow of the shard. The one who calls himself the Author.

They walked out of the cavern, leaving the stabilized plot hole behind. But as they reached the exit of the mine, Kai saw someone waiting for them. It wasn’t the Auditor. It was Clara.

She wasn’t alone. She was surrounded by a dozen soldiers, their swords drawn. Her face was cold, her eyes filled with a determination that Kai hadn’t seen before.

Kai, Clara said, her voice echoing in the forest. The council has made its decision. You are no longer the Successor. You are a threat to the world’s existence.

She raised her staff, the silver light illuminating the fear in the soldiers’ eyes.

Give us the sword, Kai, she commanded. And surrender the dark relic you found in the mine. Or we will be forced to execute the ’Villain’ here and now.

Kai looked at her, then at the red shard in his hand. The Script was working fast. It had already turned his ’Love Interest’ into his ’Executioner.’

[Current Scene: The Betrayal at the Mine Entrance.]

[Scripted Ending: Kai is captured and Sunbringer is returned to the Council.]

”Is that so?” Kai said, a dark smile spreading across his face. ”Then I guess it’s time for another unscheduled edit.”
