The forest had changed.

That was the first thing the bearded hunter noticed.

The path had once been wild and uneven, choked with roots and thick brush.

Now it was clear.

Not a road.

Not exactly.

Just a route that had been maintained by something with enough patience to keep it passable.

The adventurers walked in silence.

Five hunters from before.

Six seasoned adventurers beside them.

All of them carried the same expression.

Caution.

The youngest hunter from the earlier expedition kept glancing between the trees.

”I still don’t understand why we’re doing this.”

The bowwoman didn’t look at him.

”Because the Guild doesn’t ignore reports like that.”

The bearded hunter remained at the front.

”They said an evolved slime forced us to retreat.”

One of the adventurers snorted.

”An evolved slime.”

”That already sounds ridiculous.”

”It was less ridiculous when we were the ones being chased out.”

No one laughed.

The forest swallowed their footsteps.

They crossed a low ridge and paused.

The bearded hunter raised a hand.

Ahead...

The trees opened into a wide clearing.

And there it was.

Not a cave.

Not a nest.

A settlement.

The hunters stared.

The center of the clearing held a familiar slime village, but it was no longer the scattered, fragile thing they remembered.

The cave entrance had been reinforced with polished stone.

Shiny crystals lined the outer wall, glowing faintly in the morning light.

Small paths led in several directions from the village, each one kept clear of undergrowth.

The settlement looked... maintained.

Alive.

Organized.

The youngest adventurer blinked.

”No way.”

A patrol of slimes bounced along the northern path in a loose formation, moving with surprising discipline.

Two wolves walked beside them, silent and alert.

At the edge of the clearing, another pair of wolves stood watch beneath the trees.

Not hunting.

Guarding.

The adventurers looked again.

And then they saw the rabbits.

A small group of Fanged Rabbits sat near a bed of herbs beside the cave, sorting plants into neat piles while another carried bundles of roots toward the village.

One of them paused to nibble a leaf.

Another poked its nose into a basket of mushrooms.

They weren’t fleeing.

They weren’t hiding.

They lived here.

The bowwoman took a slow breath.

”This is a territory.”

The bearded hunter said nothing.

His face had gone still.

The memory of the old cave flashed through his mind.

The terrified slimes.

The disorganized chaos.

The wounded elder.

The desperate retreat.

This place...

Was not that place.

A slim blue shape bounced to the edge of the clearing.

Then another.

Then three more.

The adventurers tensed.

The slimes had noticed them.

The small patrol stopped at the border of the territory and formed a line.

One veteran slime bounced forward, then stopped as if waiting.

It did not attack.

It simply watched.

Behind it, a wolf emerged from the trees and sat down.

Calm.

Silent.

Its golden eyes never left the humans.

The adventurers’ hands drifted toward their weapons.

The bearded hunter lifted a hand.

”Hold.”

”Don’t provoke them.”

The youngest hunter looked stunned.

”They’re... waiting for us?”

”Seems like it.”

”But slimes don’t do that.”

The bowwoman’s gaze narrowed.

”Then these aren’t ordinary slimes.”

One of the rabbits appeared next, hopping up beside the line of slimes.

It looked at the humans.

Then at the others.

Then back.

Its ears twitched once before it calmly settled beside the wolf.

The image made one of the adventurers murmur under his breath.

”They’ve formed a border.”

The words hung in the air.

That was exactly what this was.

A border.

A patrol line.

A defended settlement.

The adventurers had expected scattered monsters.

Instead they were being watched by a cooperative force.

The bearded hunter felt something cold settle in his stomach.

He had been a hunter long enough to know when the world was wrong.

This was wrong.

A pulse passed through the minds of the monsters in the clearing.

The slimes shifted.

The wolves straightened.

The rabbits went still.

Then, from deeper inside the settlement, a wave of mana rolled outward.

Not hostile.

Commanding.

The adventurers felt it even from where they stood.

The pressure was unmistakable.

The youngest hunter swallowed.

”The evolved slime.”

The bearded hunter’s eyes hardened.

”He’s here.”

No one moved.

Not the monsters.

Not the humans.

Then the blue slimes at the border bounced once and parted.

A clear path opened toward the cave.

As if someone had silently ordered them to let the visitors approach.

The adventurers stared.

One of them muttered, ”They’re... inviting us in?”

The bowwoman kept her bow ready.

”No.”

Her eyes stayed fixed on the cave.

”They’re allowing us in.”

As they stepped into the clearing, more details emerged.

There were marks on the ground.

Not random trails.

Patrol routes.

The path to the cave split into smaller paths that looped around the settlement, probably used for scouting and supply movement.

A cluster of stones near the edge of the clearing had been arranged into a rough training area.

Several younger slimes were practicing jumps while a veteran slime corrected their spacing with gentle nudges.

Near the cave, two wolves were assisting rabbits in carrying herb bundles from a shaded garden plot.

The whole place felt... coordinated.

The humans had expected a nest.

Instead they had found a community.

The bearded hunter stopped walking.

So did the others.

The younger hunter looked almost pale.

”No wild monsters do this.”

The adventurer beside him slowly shook his head.

”Not unless they have a leader.”

The bowwoman’s eyes remained fixed on the village center.

”And not unless that leader is intelligent.”

Silence.

The implication settled over them one piece at a time.

The slimes were not merely surviving.

They were building.

The wolves were not simply tolerated.

They were part of the system.

The rabbits were not prisoners.

They were contributing.

Every race had a role.

Every path had purpose.

Every movement was deliberate.

The bearded hunter finally understood why the report had not sounded normal.

Why the Guild Master had gone quiet when reading it.

Why the danger classification had been raised.

He looked at the settlement again.

At the crystal-lined cave.

At the patrol routes.

At the working rabbits.

At the disciplined wolves.

At the slimes training like soldiers.

Then he exhaled slowly.

”An intelligent monster settlement.”

The words sounded too small for what they were seeing.

The bowwoman lowered her voice.

”This isn’t just a settlement.”

She pointed toward the center of the village.

The pressure from that place had not faded.

It was stronger now.

Steady.

Confident.

”This is a nation waiting to happen.”

The youngest hunter stared at her.

A nation?

Of monsters?

The idea should have been absurd.

Instead, looking at the border line of slimes, wolves, and rabbits standing together in the forest, it felt inevitable.

The bearded hunter’s jaw tightened.

He had spent years hunting monsters.

Today, for the first time, he felt like one was hunting his expectations.

”Well, let’s go greet our host.”
