Once again, the audience was left grappling with a cliffhanger that bordered on the sadistic. Truly exceptional stories have a way of haunting the viewer long after the credits roll, regardless of where the weekly plot decides to pause. The emotional core of the episode lay in the complex web of sacrifice.

There was the burning romance between David and Lucy, shadowed by the grim inevitability of David’s fate. There was the silent, heartbreaking devotion of Rebecca, the girl who loved David from the sidelines, offering comfort and loyalty without ever demanding his heart in return. Now, she was putting her life on the line to help him challenge Arasaka, the most powerful entity in Night City, just to fulfill his desperate wish.

Night City was a godless place, devoid of ”good people” in the traditional sense. David, Lucy, and Rebecca were all criminals, mercenaries who killed, stole, and sabotaged. They were children of the gutter who should have been consumed by greed and cynicism.

Yet, as the episode dissected their inner lives, the audience was struck by a sense of beauty. In a world where betrayal was the default setting, the fact that these three were willing to die for one another gave them a radiance that outshone the neon lights of the skyscrapers.

”Rebecca... I’m actually in tears.”

”It’s a tragedy David is already locked in with Lucy. Otherwise, I would be shipping him and Rebecca so hard right now!”

”There’s only one episode left, and I have a terrible feeling about this. There’s no way David survives this, right?”

”I don’t know, man. In most shows, you’d go full psycho at this stage, but David is the protagonist! He has to have some kind of ’main character’ armor that lets him pull through at the last second.”

”The irony is so heavy. Lucy spent two years hunting netrunners to keep Arasaka from finding David, and now David is charging into Arasaka Tower to save her, knowing it’ll cost him his soul. He’s putting on the Cyberskeleton... that’s a one-way trip to madness.”

”This cliffhanger is actually illegal. I can’t breathe.”

”The wait is going to be torture.”

As the night progressed, the discussion reached a fever pitch. While the first half of the series had established the world, the latter half, starting from Maine’s death in episode six, had focused entirely on the crushing weight of destiny. The concept of Cyberpsychosis as the inevitable ”finish line” for all cyberpunks lent the story a sense of grand, operatic tragedy.

Deep down, most fans had already guessed how David’s story would end. Yet, hope is a resilient thing. Despite Haruto’s reputation for breaking the hearts of his audience, he had never actually killed off a main protagonist before. The viewers clung to that fact like a life raft.

The following morning, the ratings for episode nine were released by Tokyo TV1. The peak rating hit an incredible 5.67%, with a series average of 5.45%. This represented a staggering jump from the previous week. When the data went public, the animation industry was split down the middle: half of the community was in a state of celebratory fervor, while the other half was stunned into a silence.

Those celebrating were the staff and creators from the myriad of small-to-mid-sized studios. They saw Haru-Yuki Animation as one of their own.

The silence, however, came from the Big Three, along with the other major powerhouses. For a long time, the massive success of Puella Magi Madoka Magica had been dismissed as a fluke.

They pointed to the more modest performance of 7 Years From Now as proof that Haruto was mortal.

But Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a different beast entirely. Madoka was a deconstruction of a popular genre, which gave it a natural advantage. But Edgerunners? Cyberpunk was a niche genre, a sci-fi aesthetic that usually struggled to find a mainstream audience. Yet, against all odds, its ratings were screaming toward the heavens.

By the time episode nine finished its broadcast run, the ”Big Three” had effectively been erased from the conversation.

The news media, sensing the shift in the wind, performed a coordinated about-face.

Previously, several major outlets had accepted ”consultation fees” from the Big Three to publish skeptical or subtly negative pieces about Haruto’s new project.

Now, they realized that continuing to trash a show with record-breaking ratings and a 9.5 user score would make them look incompetent. They abandoned their masters and joined the chorus of praise.

[Haruto: The New King of Animation? If the finale maintains this quality, he may very well shatter the 6% barrier.]

For three straight days, the media was in a ”Haruto mania” mode.

Last year, the finale of Madoka Magica hit a legendary 6.3%. While few believed Edgerunners could actually surpass that ceiling, the mere fact that people were discussing it was a testament to its power. If the show could even touch the 6% threshold, even for a single minute, Haruto’s position as the number one creator in Japan would be untouchable.

At that point, no one would be able to use his age as an excuse to look down on him.

In this industry, ”seniority” is a currency backed by results. Without the hits, you’re just an old man who’s been failing for decades; with them, you’re a god.

Haruto himself was acutely aware of the stakes. The finale was the moment he could finally step out from the shadow of his own previous success.

For the past year, whenever his name was mentioned, it was always The Creator of Madoka.

To the fans, that show was his peak.

Haruto wanted to prove them wrong.

After a week of high-intensity promotion and the frantic finalization of the distribution deals, the calendar finally turned to mid-August.

The day of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners finale had arrived.
