The standards for animation are remarkably open in this regard, allowing for the broadcast of visceral scenes that would be unthinkable in other regions.

There is no need for censorship light beams or mysterious dark clouds to hide the truth. Blood is never rendered in green; it is always a stark, unmistakable crimson.

Hayami stared at the screen, paralyzed by the sudden, violent shift in the show’s aesthetic. Only a minute ago, the veteran magical girl had been baring her soul to Madoka, shedding tears of relief because she had finally found a comrade to share her lonely burden.

Now, she had been reduced to food in the mouth of a Witch. There was no dignity in her passing, not even a body remained. She was chewed, swallowed, and effectively served as a snack.

”Quickly, the two of you must make a contract with me,” Kyubey said with a sense of urgency, looking at Sayaka and Madoka as they stood frozen in horror.

”There is no need for that.”

At the critical moment, Homura Akemi appeared to intervene, stopping the two girls before they could throw their lives away to become magical girls. After a sharp, efficient skirmish, Homura finished off the eel-like Witch. She landed softly on her feet and turned her head back at a slight angle, her expression cold and detached as she looked at the two girls.

Behind her lay a grotesque pile of scarlet remains that the Witch had spat out upon its death.

”Take a long, hard look at this. This is the fate of anyone who becomes a magical girl.”

Hayami’s mouth hung wide open. Her eyes were filled with pure, unadulterated disbelief.

What... what kind of plot is this? Is this actually a magical girl anime?

Headless Mami.

The snack.

The Warrior of Love.

Was this whole thing just a sick joke?

Then, the final blow was delivered to Hayami’s psyche.

Before the third episode, the opening and ending themes had been presented with warm, uplifting visuals. But for this installment, the ending theme changed completely. It was dark, heavy, and oppressive. The silhouette of Madoka walked alone through an abyss, and the further she walked, the more the light faded until her shadow was completely consumed by the darkness.

They’re not even pretending anymore, are they?

Hayami felt completely stunned. The Warrior of Love had used that ending theme to reveal the true soul of the work.

He was a liar. A massive, world-class liar.

Across every major animation forum and within every Madoka Magica fan group, there was a collective silence that lasted for nearly three minutes.

It wasn’t until the ending credits finished and a commercial for a local drink brand appeared on Tokyo TV that people finally snapped out of the shock.

”What the hell was that plot?”

”I... I am speechless.”

”I’ve watched hundreds of magical girl shows, and I have never seen a development like this in my life.”

”Wait, this is way too much. This is insane.”

”My poor Mami-san! This is far too cruel.”

”I just started to love her character, and she dies in less than three minutes? I refuse to accept this.”

”This was intentional. The creator did this just to mess with us. Unbelievable.”

”What Warrior of Love? This guy is the biggest fraud in the history of the industry.”

”He chose a name like Warrior of Love specifically to play us for fools, didn’t he?”

”I can’t take this. I’m going to find that idiot author’s page and flame him.”

”Count me in. Let’s go.”

”I just posted the link to the Warrior of Love account in the chat. Everyone, go give him a piece of your mind!”

”I’ve been watching anime for years, and I’ve never been provoked by an author’s malice like this before. I’m done playing nice.”

That night, Haruto’s Warrior of Love creator account on the AniSphere Forum was bombarded by hundreds of thousands of furious fans.

Fortunately, netizens generally keep their insults focused on the individual rather than their families, so the vitriol was aimed squarely at Haruto himself.

Haruto couldn’t sleep, so he spent the late hours reading through the comments of people cursing him. He felt a sense of relief that he had used a pseudonym; if he hadn’t, his main Shiori Takahashi identity would be the one under fire.

And besides, he knew this was just the beginning. In Madoka Magica, Mami being eaten was merely the opening act for the darkness. As the story progressed, the sense of despair would only deepen.

From his perspective, this was the most intense backlash he had faced since the show premiered three weeks ago, but he was certain that this would be the gentlest the audience would ever be toward him for the next two months.

A short while later, Reina and Yukino both called him.

They were worried he might be feeling distressed by the sheer volume of hate. Many screenwriters have been driven out of the industry by the sheer weight of public condemnation.

”I’m fine, really. I knew this was coming,” Haruto told them with a chuckle.

”But look at the comments yourselves. They are attacking me as a creator, but not the show itself. I haven’t seen anyone saying they’re going to drop the anime. They might curse me now, but they’ll be back next week to see what happens next.”

The night passed, and the Warrior of Love account had accumulated over a million comments and messages. The impact of the third episode was only just beginning to ripple through the industry. Because of the lag in ratings reporting, the official number for the third episode was 1.95%.

However, the entire atmosphere surrounding the show had shifted. On the animation boards of the AniSphere Forum, memes about Mami-san and Headless Senpai were everywhere. Some fans were posting pictures of themselves lighting incense in front of their television screens for Mami.

Ultimately, this spontaneous fan activity served a singular purpose: it drew in curious newcomers who had previously ignored the show. Two days after the premiere, the Saturday morning rerun of the third episode actually pulled in a rating of 2.01%, higher than the original broadcast.

Neither the television station nor the staff at Haru-Yuki Animation could quite wrap their heads around the data.

Why would the ratings for a rerun be higher when the audience was busy flaming the author? Did these people have a problem? They cursed the show and then woke up early on a Saturday just to watch it again?

In terms of ratings, Madoka was only sixteenth for the week, but in terms of social discourse and viral engagement, it had completely taken over the conversation.

This surge in popularity gave animation critics plenty of material to work with.

After all, viewers don’t need a critic to tell them to watch a blockbuster; they find those on their own. People only want to read reviews for a show that is as controversial and bizarre as Madoka Magica.

[The Turn of the Tide: After two and a half years of silence for the genre, Madoka Magica has taken a radical turn starting with episode three. Is this the beginning of a narrative collapse, or is everything going exactly according to the Warrior of Love’s plan?]

[Headless Senpai Becomes a Viral Sensation: A magical girl anime gains massive notoriety in just a few days. We wish the creator luck.]

[Killing a Lead in Episode Three: Is this a brilliant innovation by a new studio or a desperate act of self-destruction? We will know the answer when next week’s ratings arrive.]

The critics were moving with the industry tide. Some thought the move was a stroke of genius, while others argued that the magical girl genre was supposed to represent justice and joy. They claimed the Warrior of Love was simply lashing out and that the market would soon punish the studio for defying the audience’s emotions.

Regardless of the noise, the trajectory followed the same path as the parallel world.

From the third episode onward, the popularity of the show entered a period of explosive growth. Recognition, fan count, and discussion volume all multiplied.

And through it all, the creator continued to be the target of the audience’s frantic outrage. Haruto’s Warrior of Love persona was slowly becoming a legend, mostly because the fans were starting to feel like the name itself was a smug jab at their suffering.
