NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Vorra’s pale eyes stayed on Kane.

”How many others wait outside these borders for you?”

Kane answered without looking away.

”I have many. But only a few who I care for.”

Vorra’s expression hardened a fraction.

”That means you treat people as pawns. How can we be sure you won’t throw us away the moment we help you take him down?”

”I have no reason not to help you,” Kane said.

”Also, this isn’t only about me.”

A low shift moved through the watching beast warriors.

Vorra lifted one hand, and the movement stilled, but her gaze sharpened.

”We don’t believe the rumours of demons coming back. It’s been centuries.”

Kane’s voice stayed even, but the edge under it was clear.

”I don’t care what you believe. It’s the truth.”

The air around the fire tightened.

Several River-Fang warriors straightened, hands drifting closer to their weapons.

One of the broader males took a half-step forward before Vorra’s pale eyes cut to him and stopped the motion cold.

”Speak properly, barbarian,” she said, voice low and carrying.

”Do not take our leniency for granted.”

Kane didn’t move or apologize.

He held her stare. Kessa remained silent at his side, ears forward, body still.

Griselda’s wings stayed folded, but the tension in her shoulders was visible.

Vorra studied him for a long moment longer, measuring the refusal to soften against the controlled strength he had already shown.

Finally, she spoke again.

”What do you want?”

”Once I kill Grathak, I will need help calming the packs. I will be needing you by my side.”

A short, humorless breath left Vorra.

”You are awfully confident, aren’t you? Beating Grathak is still a myth when he’s two hundred years old.”

”I’ll try.”

Vorra did not reply at once.

The fire popped.

Somewhere beyond the standing stones, the river moved over rock.

Kane let the silence sit before he spoke again.

”You’ve been with him before?”

Something flickered across Vorra’s scarred face, old and carefully buried. Her pale eyes did not leave his.

”Same cavalry. Human ones. They treated us like shit. Grathak killed them.”

”Isn’t that reasonable?”

”He killed their families too.”

The words landed flat and heavy. No drama or raised voice. Just the simple fact of what the emperor had done when the humans who had used beast warriors as disposable tools finally fell.

Several of the watching River-Fang shifted at the reminder. Kessa’s ears angled back a fraction.

Even Griselda’s yellow eyes narrowed slightly.

Vorra looked up at Kane fully.

”I will think about your offer. Stay the day and learn more about the forest. There are things on the southern approaches that do not care about tournaments or broken arms in markets.”

She turned her head toward Kessa.

”Your brother’s post is nearby. There was a sighting of mutants. Recent. Closer than they should be. If you are going to walk these paths with an outsider and a winged one, you will see for yourself what the deep forest is already pushing toward us.”

Kessa inclined her head once.

”We’ll look.”

Vorra rose from her place by the fire.

The meeting forms were finished.

Limited recognition had not been formally granted, but it had not been refused either. The price and the proof still hung between them, unfinished.

”Leave by the same stones,” Vorra said.

”If the mutants have moved closer to Shenron’s post, you will deal with them, or you will turn back. The River-Fang will be watching which one you choose.”

Kane took Mjoldr back from Griselda and settled it across his shoulder.

”Understood.”

They left the clearing without further words.

Behind them, the River-Fang warriors remained near the fire, already speaking in low voices about the human who spoke of killing their emperor as if it were a task on a list, and about the old blood the war-chief had reminded them of.

Ahead, the path toward Shenron’s post waited, and with it the first real chance to see how far the mutant pressure had already reached.

Kessa waited until the standing stones were well behind them before she spoke.

”You pushed her.”

”She needed to hear it straight.”

”She almost ended the meeting when you told her you didn’t care what they believed.” Kessa’s tail flicked once.

”Most outsiders die for less. The only reason she kept listening is that you already put her warriors on the ground without making a mess of it.”

Griselda’s voice was quiet.

”The part about the human cavalry and their families landed harder than the rest. She has personal reason to hate the old order. That does not mean she will trust a new one led by another human.”

Kane kept walking.

”She doesn’t have to trust me. She only has to decide that Grathak’s way ends with the packs weaker when the real enemy arrives. Everything else is secondary.”

The track toward Shenron’s post narrowed as the trees thickened. The air grew heavier. Kessa’s ears stayed forward, constantly tracking.

Twice she stopped and tested the wind before continuing.

Griselda took a short flight above the canopy and returned with a small shake of her head; nothing large was moving in immediate sight, but the forest felt wrong in the way it had near the earlier mutant.

By the time the outer markers of Shenron’s post came into view, the sun had climbed higher, and the shadows under the trees had grown sharper.

A pair of beast warriors on watch recognized Kessa and opened the low gate without challenge, though their eyes lingered on Kane and the axe on his back.

Shenron himself was not at the gate.

One of the older warriors directed them toward the small central yard where a fresh set of tracks and dark, wrong-smelling blood had already been marked with warning signs.

Kessa crouched beside the largest print and inhaled once.

”Mutant. Same corruption as the one you and my brother killed on the way in. Closer than last time.”

Kane studied the tracks, the broken undergrowth, the direction they led, deeper, but not so deep that a hunting party would be suicidal.

”Then we follow far enough to see how many and how recent. No further.”

Griselda’s wings opened a fraction.

”And if there are more than the tracks suggest?”

Kane’s hand settled on Mjoldr’s haft.

”Then the River-Fang gets to watch how we handle it. Vorra wanted us to learn more about the forest. We’ll give her something clear to think about.”

Kessa rose, expression set.

”My brother’s people will want to come. Let them. If we’re going to be seen dealing with the pressure Grathak is ignoring, better to do it with witnesses who already know your name.”
