Naruto: Stormbreaker

Chapter 84: Chapter 84 : Unyielding

***Daiken’s POV

The wind shifted slightly as I crouched near the moss-covered ridge, eyes locked on the crumbling bunker below. From this distance, it looked abandoned. Dead quiet. But I wasn’t fooled. I’d seen the signs, faint chakra traces, disturbed ground. Someone was down there, and they didn’t want to be found. That’s what my experience and instinct told me, and I trusted them fully. Which meant I had to go in.

I moved quickly and quietly, gliding over the terrain without disturbing the earth. My senses were stretched wide. I wasn’t exactly a top-tier sensor, but I was decent enough to get a feel for the surrounding area. And I sensed nothing. That only confirmed it. Someone was masking their chakra, and they were good at it. Too good. They were here. Watching. Waiting.

I landed on a flat patch just outside the ruin’s perimeter and paused. The silence pressed in on me like a weight. Not a leaf stirred. The tension in the air was thick enough to chew through.

Then I heard it.

The faintest shift in the leaves behind me.

I spun just in time.

The ground beneath my feet cracked open as a jagged bolt of lightning shot through the spot I’d just vacated. A second later, a slicing wind followed, tearing through the shrubs like they were paper. Lightning Release: Dissection Stream. Wind Release: Gale Claw. Two jutsu, perfectly timed. Fast, efficient, and designed to kill.

I jumped back and finally saw the attacker.

He stepped out from the shadows with the calm of someone who hadn’t just tried to end my life. The armor he wore matched Iwagakure ANBU standard issue. Dark flak jacket without sleeves, reinforced bracers, and a dull red scarf that swayed despite the still air. But the mask pulled it all together.

A badger.

Painted gray and white, with narrow crimson lines around the eyes. Definitely not one of ours.

I kept my expression unreadable, but my thoughts raced. Iwa ANBU? Maybe. If they had uncovered our spy, they’d want to cut off any loose ends. Still, something didn’t fit. Too clean. Too prepared.

”Unfortunate,” the agent said, voice flat and muffled behind the mask. ”I hoped to end this cleanly.”

He moved.

Fast. Confident. Trained.

I met his charge head-on, twisted aside, and slammed a palm toward his ribs. My hand passed through air. A clone. I turned sharply.

The real one came from above, dropping in low with a kunai sparking with chakra. Lightning Release: Chakra Blade. I raised my arm, I caught the strike on a reinforced guard, which was getting damaged surprisingly fast, and immediately lashed out with my other hand.

”Fire Style: Ember Palm.”

My flame scorched his shoulder and forced him back. He moved smoothly, unshaken, forming hand signs mid-motion.

Wind Release: Dust Ripple.

A gust of wind tore up the ground, kicking debris into the air and blinding me for just a second.

Long enough.

Lightning Release: Spark Coil. A snaking arc of electricity zipped along the ground toward my legs.

I jumped, flipped in the air, and formed hand seals fast. My chakra surged. Focused. Ignited.

”Fire Style: Dragon Flame Barrage.”

Flames erupted from my mouth, not one solid blast, but a rapid series of narrow, precise streams. They hissed through the air like burning whips, slicing through the wind and mist still hanging around me.

The first stream forced him to dodge right. The second grazed his other shoulder, blackening his armor. The third curved low as he dropped under it. I wasn’t aiming to hit. I was steering him.

The fourth stream drove him toward the ruins. Fifth and sixth curled in from the sides. His options were shrinking.

The heat curled the grass and lit scattered embers, smoke swirling up in thin trails. I pressed forward, moving alongside the flames, ready to strike once he was boxed in.

But he was already mid-seal.

Wind Style: Vacuum Slash.

A razor-thin blade of air sliced toward me. I blocked it, using the force of impact to launch myself into the air, even as my kunai cracked and splintered. Pain bloomed in my hand, but I kept moving, pushing through.

Then I saw it.

The Badger-masked agent had finished forming seals. Lightning Style: Thunderclap Spear. A jagged spear of pure lightning formed along his forearm. It buzzed with barely contained power, sparks snapping at the ground beneath him.

He shot it forward like a bolt.

There was no time. The chakra output, the control, the precision, it was all insane. The jutsu locked onto me like it had a will of its own, and within a blink, it struck.

The Badger collapsed to one knee, gasping from the effort. That jutsu was clearly taxing. My body shimmered, cracked, and burst into smoke.

A Shadow Clone.

The agent tensed as he realized it, his head snapping around. Searching. Expecting an ambush.

He was wrong.

I was already moving, flickering away at full speed. As the clone’s memories settled in, I confirmed my suspicions. Wind and lightning. A perfect counter to my earth. Too fast to pin with fire. This wasn’t coincidence. It wasn’t a botched trap. They knew who they were coming for.

This was an assassination.

And worse, I couldn’t feel the agent anymore.

Either he was too slow to keep up, which was unlikely with his chakra natures, or he wasn’t a sensor type. He couldn’t track me, which gave me a small edge. However, years of experience had taught me never to expect the best.

My situation was not good. I’d already used Flicker Jutsu to get here fast, a clone, and several defensive bursts. I had taken a soldier pill earlier, but Shadow Clones drained more than just chakra. Using them again would be reckless unless things went critical. And then...

Water Style: Hidden Mist Technique.

A thick, rolling fog surged across the forest floor. It moved extremely fast, unnatural in its spread. This was a high-level chakra technique used with exceptional proficiency and control.

And that meant this water user was elite. Not just strong, but smart, capable as well. They had cloaked their chakra completely, even while using a jutsu of this scale.

The forest vanished in white.

Visibility dropped to almost zero. The air turned heavy and wet, choking out noise and turning movement into a gamble. For most, it would be a death sentence.

But not for an old dog like me, I dropped low and pressed my hands to the soil.

”Earth Style: Mud Surge.”

My chakra sank into the terrain, then erupted forward in a wave. The earth cracked, liquefying into thick, rolling mud that crawled across the clearing like a flood. It churned through the grass and scraped against stone, sweeping across the fog-shrouded forest floor.

I wasn’t aiming to kill. I needed to flush them out.

The weight of the moving ground distorted the mist, flattening pockets and revealing shapes. There, a shadow stumbled, struggling against the shifting terrain.

Got you.

I surged forward. My target struggled to regain his footing, but I didn’t need a clear line of sight. I slammed my hands to the soil.

”Earth Style: Stone Lance.”

The ground at his feet split open. A narrow, needle-sharp spike launched upward, aimed for center mass. It was fast. One of my cleanest, deadliest jutsu for close-range interruption.

He twisted. Quick. Trained. But not quick enough.

The lance tore through his armor, slashing deep into his side. He tumbled into the wet dirt, blood trailing behind him.

Mud mixed with blood and momentum as I closed in before he could rise. But just as I reached him...

A sharp crack ripped through the air behind me.

Lightning Style: Thunder Bullet Barrage.

I turned, too slow.

A barrage of high-speed lightning bullets came screaming through the trees. Each one was small, no bigger than a fist, but tightly packed with lethal chakra. They moved almost too fast for the eye to track.

I dodged the first. Slid under the second.

The third hit.

A searing jolt slammed into my ribs, blasting the breath from my lungs. My body twisted, momentum breaking, and I crashed into the ground hard, skidding through gravel and grass.

I rolled up, but slower this time.

Pain flared in my side. My vest was burned through, the skin beneath blistered and raw. I clenched my teeth and focused, steadying my breathing.

That badger bastard, he wasn’t just skilled. He was a cunning assassin. He caught up to me too fast and picked the perfect moment to strike, all while keeping his chakra masked. He was surgical. Waited until my focus was locked on the other target. He knew exactly when to move. This wasn’t some sloppy hit squad. This was assassination being done by experienced professionals.

I looked up just in time to see the flash of a badger mask vanish into the trees.

Still repositioning. Still hunting.

And now, I was bleeding.
