Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

The fifth-year classroom filled before Tonbo arrived. Students had submitted questions about Hokage, missions, flight, fear, money, clan techniques, romance, injuries, and whether someone unable to use ninjutsu could become an excellent shinobi. Iruka grouped repeated questions but did not remove the uncomfortable ones.

Rock Lee read his own question from the copied list. Neji sat two rows away with the Byakugan inactive. He had submitted nothing. The Caged Bird seal beneath his forehead protector had made broad promises about effort sound like words addressed to other people.

Tenten wanted a practical route toward becoming a kunoichi as powerful as Tsunade. She suspected the answer would be ”work hard” and intended to ask what work.

Other students carried questions they had not written. One wanted to know whether fear disqualified him from field work. Another wondered if a branch-family seal could decide an entire life but lacked the courage to write the Hyūga name. The anonymous cards allowed difficult ideas to exist without immediately exposing their owners.

Tonbo entered in a standard jōnin vest without bandages or a display of chakra. The correction notice had already taught enough students to recognize him. He placed a stack of blank cards on the desk.

”I am Tobitake Tonbo, Analysis Team leader. Iruka was one of my students. That does not make every answer I give correct. If an answer sounds incomplete, ask again.”

The invitation changed the room more effectively than intimidation. The first student asked how to become Hokage.

”I have never held the office,” Tonbo said. ”The current Hokage can answer from experience. My answer is that you need enough trust to receive authority, enough knowledge to use it, and enough strength to survive the people who oppose it. None of the three replaces the others.”

”How do we become strong?”

”Study fundamentals until you can apply them under conditions that make them difficult. Learn what your teammates know. Train your body without treating injury as progress. Read mission history. Ask why a successful plan worked and whether it would work twice.”

Tonbo used Kiba’s recent victory as an example without naming the student. A basic Clone had not defeated the Sharingan; control of line of sight had. Studying fundamentals meant understanding what a tool changed, not repeating its textbook description.

The answer contained no secret shortcut. Several students wrote it down anyway. Neji did not. He had heard adults describe trust and knowledge before using birth to decide who would command and who would obey. Another asked how to make a classmate like him.

”You cannot make someone return affection. You can speak honestly, respect the answer, behave well enough that friendship is possible, and continue living if the answer is no.”

The class laughed at the boy’s embarrassment until Tonbo asked how many wanted their own refusal mocked. The laughter ended.

He did not give the student a strategy for wearing someone down. Affection obtained through pressure was not success. The most difficult part might be accepting that good behavior did not create a debt another child had to repay.

A girl asked whether shinobi could fly.

Tonbo described summon transport, specialized constructs, wind techniques, gliding equipment, and the chakra cost of remaining aloft. He also described weather, fall zones, consent of summons, and the fact that a child seeing Tenyu on a woven eagle did not see years of controlled preparation.

”Possible does not mean immediate,” he said.

A student asked whether Tenyu and Maki flew because they were more talented. Tonbo answered that they flew because a specific construct, training sequence, monitoring system, and adult team supported the activity. Talent affected pace. It did not replace permission or preparation.

The question session moved through ordinary concerns. Mission pay varied by rank and division. Fear could provide information but also narrow attention. Clan techniques created access and obligations rather than automatic superiority. Injury required treatment; hiding it endangered teammates. A shinobi could refuse an unlawful order, but should know the reporting route before a crisis.

When asked whether killing made someone a real shinobi, Tonbo said no. Some missions required lethal force; many did not. Judgment included recognizing surrender, evidence value, civilian risk, and the difference between preventing harm and proving resolve. The massacre had made that question too immediate for romantic answers.

Another student asked why strong shinobi still died. Tonbo named surprise, incomplete information, protecting others, exhaustion, bad decisions, stronger enemies, and chance. Strength changed probabilities. It did not sign a contract with survival.

Tonbo answered what he knew and named uncertainty when he did not. Iruka corrected one outdated Academy policy. A student whose parent served in the new Military Police explained that recruitment rules had changed since the public notice. Information moved in more than one direction.

An anonymous card asked whether obeying a captain was always correct. Tonbo explained emergency command, lawful refusal, and the danger of debating every instruction during an attack. A shinobi could obey a safe immediate order, preserve evidence, and challenge its legality afterward; an order to harm civilians without necessity required refusal and reporting. Iruka wrote the two emergency channels on the board.

Rock Lee kept his hand raised. Tonbo called on him near the middle rather than saving the difficult question for a dramatic end.

”Can someone who cannot use ninjutsu become an excellent shinobi?”

Several classmates whispered no. One said every opponent who knew taijutsu would also possess more options. Another said an Academy graduate had to perform basic techniques, so the question ended before excellence mattered.

Iruka did not silence them. They had identified real obstacles without needing to humiliate Lee.

Tonbo looked at the boy. ”Do you mean someone who currently struggles, someone whose control may improve, or someone who will never use ninjutsu?”

”I don’t know which I am.”

”Then an honest answer must cover all three.”

Tonbo asked Iruka whether Lee had completed an updated control assessment. Iruka said the current record documented repeated failure but not the precise stage at which shaping broke down. That gap mattered. A student could not plan around a label. Neji raised his eyes.

Tonbo chose his examples from Konoha, where the students could ask about the people involved.

”Yes,” he said. ”But the route is narrower, not easier, and excellence will require more than hitting harder.”

Several students changed expression. Lee looked relieved. Neji looked skeptical. Tenten began writing before Tonbo explained why. The same answer could become hope, doubt, or another claim to test. Lee’s hand lowered slowly. The room waited for the rest.
