My Infinite System.

Lucian did not return to the yards .

Reed Street would have been safer an hour or two, but safer was not always useful. The bathhouse woman had explained the map clearly enough. Delegates sought a Lord. Houses sought a claim. A Free with clean habits and poor timing stood directly between both. If he listened to the next official knock on a door, someone else would select the room it opened into.

He cut towards the upper canal after dark - away from Hold Market and the boarding lanes. Cael did not speak until the street noises thinned to nothing.

”You are walking towards rank,” Cael said

”I am walking towards answers.”

”In this place they are often the same door.”

The canal path here was cleaner than the lower cut. Private storehouses. Closed courtyards. Lamps that burned with a steady white flame rather than cheap oil. Lucian kept his hands exposed and his pace unhurried. A man sneaking through this district would be stopped. A man wandering as he belonged was the first to be observed.

He felt the notice ahead of seeing it.

It was neither Watch attention nor house runner hunger, but pressed against him differently - as the air had decided to measure him. Lucian stopped at a stone rail over the water and waited.

A woman stepped out from the arch of a side bridge. Tall. Dark coat. No crest. Her hair was pulled back in a practical knot, her eyes held the same layered depth Lucian had glimpsed once in the void when primordials spoke of Cael. She did not reach for a weapon. She did not need to.

”You are the Free from Sull’s yard, the one the delegates paused and the houses started pricing.”

Lucian kept his back to the rail. ”People in this city talk too much.”

” People in this city sell what they hear. ” She came further by two steps and no more. ”My name is Istra. I do not belong to Veyrn, or Sallis, and I do not carry a civic seal. I belong to an older accounting.”

”Primordial,” Lucian said.

Istra’s mouth tilted. ”Good. I dislike teaching basics.”

Cael’s presence sharpened across Lucian’s head - suddenly and coldly. ”Careful. She is not Authority detachment. She is house adjacent to the old seats. The ones which run errands when Lords pretend they are not simply curious.”

Lucian did not reply aloud to Cael. ”What do you want?”

”To see whether the quiet laborer is only a laborer.” Istra studied him openly, with no shame to it. ”There was a fluctuation. Lord-level. The lower planes are flush with people who pretend they understand what it means. Most understand only fear and opportunity. I was sent to find out if Keth-Arel held a footprint worth walking towards.”

”And?”

”And your name has begun to rise for a man who claims simply to lift crates.” She rested one hand on the bridge stone. ”The delegates will not stay polite forever. The houses have already stopped being polite in private. That leaves you with a short list of endings - Collected. Bought. Broken open. Or spoken to by someone who knows what Lord-rank residue feels like.”

Lucian met her eyes. ” You think I am tied to the missing Lord.”

”I think you are tied to something that makes my teeth ache.” Istra said. ”Which is rarer.”

A barge slid beneath the bridge, its lamps swaying on the deck. The two of them barely looked at it.

”Say what you came to say,” Lucian said.

Istra nodded once, as if she respected the impatience. ” There are factions above this city that want Cael’s absence left undisturbed. There are others that want any remaining portion of him caged and used. If you are ordinary, walk out of Keth-Arel by morning and you will become someones rumor. If you are not ordinary - then continuing to play Free labour is an insult to the people hunting you and a danger to every street you stand in.”

The name lay in the open air between them.

Cael.

Lucian kept his face steady, but something in the canal wind had gone thinner than expected. Istra watched for the flinch and was smiling when she saw the smaller thing underneath.

”There,” she said softly. ”Not surprise at the title. Surprise that I used it here.”

”Names such as that get people killed,” Lucian said.

”Names such as that also open doors.” Istra’s voice kept level. ”I am not here to drag you to delegates. If I wanted that, you would already be in a different room. I am here to offer a rout out of this lower plane before Keth-Arel becomes a bidding floor with your body in the center.”

”In exchange for what?”

”Conversation. Truth enough to decide whether you are a remnant, a vessel, a successor or a mistake with too much power and no instruction.” She tilted her head. ”And before you ask, I cannot promise safety - I can promise a better class of danger.”

Lucian almost laughed at that. Almost. ”Everyone in this city keeps selling me better danger.”

”Then stop buying from street brokers and house dogs.” Istra’s voice hardened for the first time. ”Derrin was never going to get you anywhere that mattered. The bathhouse woman sold you weather reports. I am offering movement.”

Cael’s voice cut in, low and precise. ”She is useful. She is not kind. If you take her route, assume every kindness is a leash measurement.”

”I assumed that when she said my yard name,” Lucian murmured.

Istra’s eyes were narrowing slightly. ”Talking to someone I cannot see. That is either madness or company. In your case, I doubt madness.”

Lucian did not confirm it. He looked past her at the higher roofs where official lamps burnt in neat rows. ”If I stay, the delegates come back with a harder hold. If I leave with you, I go into a structure I do not control.”

”Correct.” Istra said. ”That is the whole choice. Control is already gone. The only question is who uses the loss first.”

A silence stretched for breath - then another.

” Where would your route put me?” Lucian asked.

”Out of Keth-Arel by private channel before the next inspection sweep. Then onto a neutral ground on the mid-plane where my people can speak without civic clerks taking notes.” Istra straightened from the rail. ”You would not be unguarded, you would also not be free in a soft sense of the word. But you would be closer to the ranks that actually knew Cael as more than a missing title.”

The canal water slapped against the stone below. Somewhere behind them - but far - a Watch bell marked the hour.

Lucian thought of Evelyn, of Lucy’s order to keep a life, of Alistair sealed into a ruined inheritance seat and Team Zero left so he could carry this part on his own. He had come into the Primordial Expanse looking for answers, not a longer disguise in a dock city.

”I will not swear to your house,” He said

”I have not asked for an oath,” Istra replied. ”I asked for movement.”

”Then we move,” Lucian said. ”And if this becomes a cage, I break it.”

Istra smiled fully for the first time, sharply but almost pleased. ”If you can break what waits above this plane, then the fluctuation was never a rumor at all.”

She turned down the side-bridge and did not look to see if he followed. Lucian stood another moment with the canal behind him, the lower city spreading out beneath him like a trap that had finally admitted what it was.

Then he followed her into the darker path between the lamps - leaving Reed Street, the yards and the name of a quiet Free behind him.

Above them Keth-Arel kept its official calm.

Under that, the first real primordial hand had closed around his road.
