Chapter 214: Chapter 213: I Still Like Your Old, Untamable Self

Demon Suppression Bureau, Linwei Garrison.

Inside a room.

Li Youtao rose with a warm smile, seeing a visitor out.

Only after the man’s figure had disappeared into the distance did Li Youtao’s expression collapse. He rubbed his stiff face, turned, and walked back to his seat, his features twisting into a look of misery.

’Dammit, that kid doesn’t even show up for duty, and all these visitors are driving me insane!’

’If this keeps up, I’m going to take a few days off myself!’

The target of Li Youtao’s grumbling was, of course, Wu Chen.

Five days had passed since Wu Chen captured the barbarian spy. As word spread of a young man effortlessly taking down the agent, the Linwei Garrison had become livelier than ever before.

After all, for those with vested interests, it wasn’t difficult to uncover his position and strength, even if Wu Chen had tried to keep a low profile.

As a result, the Linwei Garrison had been receiving at least a dozen visitors a day, all hoping to meet this Young Master Wu and build a connection.

But Wu Chen wasn’t at the Linwei Garrison, and these young masters were naturally displeased when they couldn’t meet him.

They didn’t express it openly, still wearing smiles as they left.

But Li Youtao could feel that they seemed to be holding him accountable.

As if he were hiding the man on purpose!

Among these visitors, the one who left Li Youtao most astonished was a Golden Eagle Captain, Captain Sun. He had shown a violet-gold waist token engraved with the character for ’King,’ his purpose also to see Wu Chen.

The prestige of his identity was self-evident.

’But the kid doesn’t show up for duty! Even if a god showed up, where am I supposed to pull a living person out of for you?!’

Li Youtao complained silently, speechless.

Fortunately, Captain Sun hadn’t said much that day. He just took a look around and left, which was a huge relief for Li Youtao.

’Today is the fifth day. This storm should be blowing over soon.’

Sitting back down at his desk, Li Youtao could only offer himself this bit of consolation.

It wasn’t just wishful thinking. The first three of the five days had seen significantly more visitors; the last two had been much quieter.

After all, once word got out that Wu Chen wasn’t showing up for duty, no one wanted to be turned away at the door.

They were all from prominent families; who would want to offer a warm face only to be met with a cold backside?

’Still too young. He thinks just not showing up will solve the problem.’

Li Youtao shook his head and mused, ’He doesn’t realize that by refusing to see anyone, he’s already made countless enemies without even knowing it.’

In his opinion, Wu Chen should have stayed at the Linwei Garrison, met with everyone, and played along for a while without committing to anyone.

Then, he could have chosen a suitable faction to align with.

That Golden Eagle Captain, Captain Sun, would have been a great choice. The violet-gold waist token engraved with the character for ’King’ said it all.

That way, the others would naturally give up trying to recruit him and, intimidated by the power behind Captain Sun, wouldn’t dare to make trouble for Wu Chen.

’But it’s too late for all that now. The kid’s in for a rough time.’

’With the faction behind that Golden Eagle Captain, this kid’s peaceful days are over...’

Li Youtao shook his head. Just as he was about to pick up his brush to write, footsteps sounded outside again. The noisy garrison guards in the courtyard fell silent at the sound.

’Another one?’

Just from the reaction outside, Li Youtao knew it was another person looking for Wu Chen.

He was just about to get up and greet them when a clear voice came from outside the door:

”This subordinate, Wu Chen, pays his respects to Captain Li.”

Li Youtao, who was in the middle of standing up, faltered. ’You’re no subordinate, you’re my master now!’

In the Demon Suppression Bureau, rank was one thing, but ultimately, strength was what truly mattered.

For someone in the Leakless Realm to call himself a ”subordinate” to someone in the Blood Coagulation Realm was completely backward!

”Lord Wu, please, come in!”

Li Youtao hurried to the doorway, strode quickly down the steps, and made a welcoming gesture.

Seeing the affable attitude on Li Youtao’s square face, so completely different from a few days ago,

Wu Chen naturally knew the reason for this change, but he still complained inwardly:

’I preferred your unruly attitude from before.’

Of course, he wasn’t going to say that out loud and provoke Li Youtao.

From what little he knew, Li Youtao was a decent person. To get into a fight and beat up some useless young master for the sake of a group of unrelated garrison guards was a rare quality.

One would be hard-pressed to find many people with such a genuine character in the entire Demon Suppression Bureau.

”Captain Li, you can just call me by my name.”

Wu Chen didn’t fuss over the title; he wasn’t used to being called ”Lord” anyway.

After saying this plainly, he skipped any further pleasantries and walked straight into the room, over to the wall where missions were posted.

”I’ll look at the missions myself. Please, Captain Li, don’t let me keep you.”

With that, Wu Chen began to carefully examine the missions on the wall on his own.

Although his goal was a Level A mission, if there were any other missions on the way to a Level A destination, he could complete them as well.

It was all for merit points, and every little bit added up. They could be exchanged for Martial Arts and elixirs, so there was no reason not to take them.

Li Youtao watched the figure standing silently by the wall, a thoughtful look in his eyes, and marveled inwardly.

He had wondered what kind of attitude Wu Chen would have when he returned to the Linwei Garrison and saw them again.

After all, he had captured a barbarian spy alive and possessed the strength of the Leakless Realm at such a young age.

Anyone else in his position would have their nose in the air, acting high and mighty.

Even if he had adopted a worse attitude, Li Youtao, the Captain in charge of the Linwei Garrison, could only let it be. There would be nothing he could do.

But Li Youtao never would have imagined that Wu Chen would be just like he was during their first meeting:

Quiet, humble, polite, and not doing anything to annoy people.

Furthermore, his focus was still on the Demon Suppression Bureau’s missions.

It was as if capturing the barbarian spy alive was nothing worth mentioning to him.

”Young Master Wu, for us garrison guards, looking at these missions isn’t of much use.”

Instead of returning to the main seat, Li Youtao walked to Wu Chen’s side and began to explain:

”Garrison guards only have the authority to obey orders, not to act independently or accept missions on their own.”

”Without a dispatch order from a Captain above, we garrison guards can only sit around. Even I can’t assign you a mission on my own.”

”The mission to capture the barbarian spy last time was just an exception.”

”If you had stayed at the garrison a few days ago, Young Master Wu, and met with the Captains who came to visit, you’d have their connections. You could have chosen any of these missions you liked. But now, that’s no longer possible.”

”So, after you’re done looking at the missions, Young Master Wu, please be patient and wait.”

The other men in the Linwei Garrison were of low realms, so Li Youtao didn’t worry about them. The key was this man before him, a master in the Leakless Realm. He could easily just look at a mission and head straight for the destination.

He wouldn’t care about this rule or that one.

And most importantly, no one would be able to stop him!

How helpless was that?

However, Li Youtao also knew in his heart that, given Wu Chen’s character, he wouldn’t actually do such a thing.

But a word of caution was still necessary.

Hearing this, Wu Chen nodded slightly, indicating his understanding.

He understood the principle of following the rules of a place when you are there.

Besides, everyone in the Demon Suppression Bureau, from top to bottom, relied on these missions to make a living. There was no need for him to go around smashing their rice bowls.

However, after finishing his review of the missions, his brow gradually furrowed. After checking three times, he couldn’t help but speak up:

”Where are the Level A missions? Captain Li, why aren’t there any Level A missions yet?”

Just like the first time he came, the wall still had no Level A missions posted.

The question took Li Youtao by surprise. He had been busy dealing with the stream of nobles coming to see Wu Chen for the past few days and hadn’t had time to pay attention to such things.

He was about to call over the garrison guard who normally posted the missions to ask what was going on and if he had been slacking off.

But just then, along with a set of footsteps, a crisp voice drifted in from outside, instantly drawing the attention of everyone both inside and outside the room:

”No need to look. The Level A mission you’re looking for is right here with me.”

The voice was crisp and pleasant, like the chiming of a silver bell.

Wu Chen didn’t even need to turn and look at the person’s figure. Just from the voice, he knew who it was.

At that moment, the corner of his mouth couldn’t help but twitch.

’So, I got stuck with her after all...’
