Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Vale arrived at noon.

Exactly noon — not the early arrival of professional punctuality, not the deliberate exactness of someone controlling the terms of their entrance. Just noon. The specific quality of someone who had been ready since midnight and had spent the morning finishing everything that needed finishing before she could walk through a door without the institutional armor on.

She’d filed the final FR-7 documentation at 9 AM.

Submitted the Director’s restructuring approval at 10 AM.

Amended the Handler Agreement’s scope definition at 11 AM.

At 11:47 AM she’d felt the third bond completion move through the field — Dana’s, deep and eight-years-rooted, the quality of it moving through the compass with the specific texture of something that had been building longer than any of the others.

She’d sat at her desk for thirteen minutes.

Then she’d put on her jacket.

Walked out of the Association tower.

He opened the door before she knocked.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

”Noon,” he said.

”I had things to finish,” she said.

”I know,” he said. ”The field told me.”

She held his gaze.

”The FR-7 documentation,” she said. ”The restructuring approval. The Handler Agreement amendment.” She paused. ”I needed everything institutional to be complete before I came here for non-institutional reasons.”

He looked at her.

”Non-institutional reasons,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”You needed the professional track fully closed,” he said. ”Before the personal one could open.”

”Yes,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Yuna,” he said.

”Mm.”

”They’re the same track,” he said.

She looked at him.

The not-quite-steady quality running at full volume.

”I know,” she said. ”I’m still learning what that means operationally.”

He stepped back from the door.

She came in.

The facility was quiet.

Sera and Mira in the main room — he felt their frequencies settle into the specific quality of people giving space to something that required it. Dana in the flexible room, the Tracker perception running at its gentle post-completion register. Lyra translating, always translating, the document producing new sections at the rate the compass was completing bonds.

Vale stood in the main room and looked at it — the analysis station, the research stack, the five-frequency ambient quality of a space that had become the operational center of something the world didn’t have a category for yet.

She looked at Sera.

Sera looked at her.

”Yuna,” Sera said.

”Sera,” Vale said.

Something passed between them — the same quality as the exchange at the Gate checkpoint, two precise people acknowledging each other. But different today. The completion in it. The field carrying both their frequencies at their full real registers.

”Tea,” Sera said.

”Yes,” Vale said.

Sera made it without further discussion.

Vale sat.

He sat across from her.

She held the cup Sera handed her with both hands — not her usual single-handed professional grip. Both hands. The specific posture of someone who needed something warm to hold.

He looked at her.

”The document,” she said. ”Lyra sent me the fourth bond section this morning.”

”What did it say,” he said.

”That the fourth bond has a specific quality,” she said. ”The document describes it as — the bond that completes under the weight of the longest deliberation.” She held her gaze on the cup. ”The anchor that has taken the most time to acknowledge what it is. Not because it doubts — because it understands the weight of the commitment more fully than the others.”

He held her gaze.

”That’s you,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Not because you’re last,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”Because I’m thorough.” She held his gaze. ”I needed to understand completely before I moved. I’ve been running the full assessment since the Boss clear. Since the field. Since—” she paused. ”Since I walked into the fourteenth floor and found Lyra in the chair and felt the field carrying her frequency alongside mine and understood what the configuration was.”

”That was day twenty-two,” he said.

”Day twenty-two,” she confirmed. ”I’ve been thorough for ten days.”

He held her gaze.

”And now,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Now I have complete information,” she said. ”Three bond completions through the field. The full document translation. Ten days of running every projection.” She paused. ”The assessment is complete.”

”What’s the conclusion,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The calibrated dark eyes.

The not-quite-steady quality.

Present.

At full volume.

”That the Handler Agreement’s original purpose was institutional,” she said. ”That I amended it because the institutional purpose required updating.” She paused. ”And that there is a third purpose — the one I didn’t write into any version of any document — that has been operational since the Boss clear and that I am done pretending requires more assessment.”

He held her gaze.

”Tell me the third purpose,” he said.

She set the cup down.

Held his gaze with the precision of someone who had been building toward a statement for ten days and was finally saying it.

”I want to be permanent,” she said. ”Not the institutional permanent of a Handler designation or a Director-adjacent authority structure. The document’s permanent.” She held his gaze. ”Woven into the architecture. Eternal anchor.” She paused. ”I want what the compass is building toward to include me. Not as the Handler. As—”

She stopped.

”As what,” he said.

She looked at him.

”As mine,” she said. ”Specifically. You. Permanently.” She held his gaze. ”The most imprecise sentence I have ever constructed. And I cannot find a more accurate one.”

He held her gaze.

The not-quite-steady quality at full volume.

The calibrated precision and the thirty-one years and the loneliness resolving and the three versions of a document in a shredded pile and the civilian jacket and the tea at midnight and Yuna and tonight.

”Yuna,” he said.

”Mm.”

”That’s the most precise thing you’ve said to me,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Is it,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”Because it’s true.”

She held his gaze.

”I’ve been precise about everything except this for thirty-one years,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”I’m being precise about it now,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”Then you know what I’m asking,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

”And,” she said.

He looked at her.

At the woman who had built a division in seventy-two hours and three versions of a document and a Director-adjacent authority structure and a framework for the most significant institutional challenge in the world’s new history.

At the woman who had walked four hundred meters in the dark to sit on a couch and drink tea and let the not-quite-steady quality be present without containing it.

At the fifth frequency.

The fourth bond.

The one who had deliberated the longest because she understood the weight most completely.

”Come here,” he said.

She stood.

Crossed to him.

Stopped close — the deliberate proximity of someone who had decided and was not performing uncertainty about the decision.

He looked up at her from where he sat.

She looked down at him.

The specific configuration of a power dynamic that had been running in one direction for twenty-two days quietly inverting — not because either of them had decided to invert it, because the weight of the moment required it.

He reached up.

Took her hand.

She held very still.

He turned her hand over.

Pressed his lips to the inside of her wrist.

The not-quite-steady quality — he felt it through the field, the specific frequency shift of something that had been contained for ten days encountering contact it had been assessing for exactly that long.

She exhaled.

The first fully uncontained sound he’d heard from her.

Not the controlled exhale of someone managing a response. The real version. The sound of the calibration encountering something it hadn’t calibrated for because some things cannot be calibrated for in advance.

He stood.

She was eye level with him now — the differential small, her posture carrying its usual precision, except the precision was doing something different today. Not containing. Present. All of it, fully present, the three-steps-ahead architecture and the not-quite-steady quality and the thirty-one years of building running at the same frequency simultaneously.

”Yuna,” he said.

She met his gaze.

”I know this is significant,” he said. ”To you specifically. The commitment weight.”

”Yes,” she said.

”You’ve run every projection,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”And the conclusion,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I already told you the conclusion,” she said. ”I don’t repeat assessments.”

He held her gaze.

”No,” he said. ”You don’t.”

He closed the distance.

She met him exactly — not giving way, not overwhelmed, choosing. The deliberate quality of every decision she’d ever made applied to this one.

She kissed him with the precision she brought to everything.

Which was to say: completely.

His room.

She stood in the center of it and looked at it the way she looked at every new operational environment — reading the space, noting the configuration.

Then she looked at him.

”I want to tell you something,” she said.

”Tell me,” he said.

”I built three versions of the document,” she said. ”The Handler Agreement. You know this.”

”Yes,” he said.

”The version you signed had subsection C deleted,” she said. ”The protective clause. Discretionary authority over your welfare.”

”Yes,” he said.

”The other two versions,” she said. ”I shredded them night before last.”

”I know,” he said. ”I felt the quality of your frequency shift when you did.”

She held his gaze.

”I shredded them because the document’s purpose was wrong,” she said. ”I didn’t need protective authority over your welfare. The compass architecture provides that structurally.” She paused. ”What I actually needed — what the documents were a substitute for — was this.”

”This,” he said.

”Presence,” she said. ”Without the framework around it.” She held his gaze. ”The framework was how I got close to things I was afraid of losing. Control as proximity.” She paused. ”The document says the bond completes when both frequencies have shown each other everything and chosen to remain.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I’m showing you everything,” she said. ”The three document versions. The subsection C. The thirty-one years of building structures because I didn’t know how to want the thing the structures were for.” She held his gaze. ”The loneliness. The not-quite-steady quality.” She paused. ”All of it.”

He held her gaze.

”I see it,” he said.

”And,” she said.

”And I’m not going anywhere,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The calibrated dark eyes.

The not-quite-steady quality.

Real.

”Okay,” she said.

”Okay,” he said.

He crossed to her.

She held her ground.

He put his hands on her face — not the assessment grip, not the professional contact, just his hands, warm against her jaw, the specific warmth of someone choosing to hold rather than to manage.

She went still.

The complete stillness of something that has been running at high operational capacity for a very long time and has just been given permission to stop.

”Yuna,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Stop running projections,” he said.

She looked at him.

”For how long,” she said.

”Tonight,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”One night without projections,” she said.

”One night,” he said.

She looked at him for a long moment.

”That’s — unprecedented,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”I don’t know what that feels like,” she said.

”I know,” he said. ”Try anyway.”

She held his gaze.

”Okay,” she said.

He kissed her.

She was — not what any of the previous experiences had prepared him for.

Not released like Sera. Not certain like Mira. Not deep-rooted like Dana.

She was precise.

The word that defined everything about her, applied to this — the complete focus of someone who was doing one thing and doing it with the full deployment of everything they were.

No parallel tracks.

No projections.

Just this.

Just him.

The not-quite-steady quality, fully present, finally in a context where not quite steady was not a failure of composure but the most accurate description of something real.

She held nothing back.

Not through deliberate choice — through the architecture of the moment the document had described. The performed version made structurally impossible. The real frequency the only one remaining.

And what remained was —

Extraordinary.

The thirty-one years of precision expressing itself as this: the most focused, most complete, most fully-deployed attention he had ever been the object of. She wasn’t reading him the way Dana read him — the Tracker’s pattern recognition. She wasn’t watching him the way Mira watched him — the content-mind and the real-mind merged.

She was simply with him.

Completely.

Without assessment. Without projection. Without the three-steps-ahead architecture running in the background.

Just present.

For the first time in thirty-one years.

”Yuna,” he said.

”Don’t,” she said. ”Don’t talk.”

”Why,” he said.

”Because I’m trying to stay in this,” she said. ”Without calculating what it means.”

He looked at her.

”Is it working,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Surprisingly,” she said.

”Good,” he said.

She pulled him back.

He went.

The field running between them — the bond at its deepening quality, the origin hunger reading the genuine depth with absolute accuracy.

Precise, it registered.

Completely precise.

And underneath the precision: something that has been waiting a very long time to be in a context where precision is not the point.

He held her.

She held him.

The city outside. The Gate signatures. The noon light through the floor-to-ceiling windows doing its clear-day thing, the overcast finally broken, actual sunlight for the first time in twenty-seven days.

She noticed it.

”Sun,” she said.

He looked at the window.

”First time since the world changed,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The world changed on a Tuesday,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Today is a Thursday,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at the sunlight on the floor.

”Twenty-seven days,” she said.

”Twenty-seven days,” he confirmed.

She held his gaze.

”I spent twenty-seven days building a framework for something that didn’t need one,” she said.

”The framework kept you in range,” he said. ”Without it you might not have stayed.”

She looked at him.

”I would have stayed,” she said. ”I would have found another reason.”

He held her gaze.

”I know,” he said. ”But I’m glad it was this one.”

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she did the thing.

The almost-smile.

Not the institutional version.

Not the professional approximation.

The real one.

Small. Precise. Completely genuine.

The first time he’d seen it.

He thought: I’m going to keep that too.

He thought: load-bearing. That specifically.

The completion happened at 1:34 PM.

He felt it move through him — the fourth bond reaching its complete form, the origin hunger registering the genuine depth with the absolute accuracy the document had described.

And Vale’s bond had a quality none of the others did.

Weight, he thought. The deliberation expressing itself in the completion’s texture — ten days of running every projection, three document versions, thirty-one years of building toward something she hadn’t had a name for, all of it present in the moment the bond completed.

The heaviest thing.

Not the deepest — Dana’s was deepest.

The heaviest. The most considered. The bond that had been weighed most completely before it was acknowledged.

She felt it too.

He saw it in her expression — the specific quality of someone integrating something they had modeled comprehensively and still not fully anticipated.

She looked at him.

”That’s—” she started.

”Yes,” he said.

”The projections didn’t—” she stopped.

”No,” he said. ”They wouldn’t.”

She held his gaze.

”Ninety-nine percent,” she said. Reading his panel.

He looked at it.

[COMPLETION CONDITION: 99%][BOND COMPLETIONS: 4 OF 5][REMAINING: 1]

”One percent,” he said.

”One bond,” she said.

”One,” he confirmed.

She held his gaze.

”Lyra,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

”Six hundred years,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The first bond,” she said. ”In the sense that it predates all the others by approximately five hundred and ninety-eight years.”

”Yes,” he said.

”And the last to complete,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The document,” she said. ”Does it say why.”

”The fifth bond,” he said. ”The document calls it the anchor bond. The one that corresponds to the center point rather than the cardinal directions.” He held her gaze. ”The compass is four cardinal points and a center. The four cardinal bonds complete first. The center bond completes last — because it’s not a direction. It’s the point everything else is organized around.”

Vale was quiet.

”She’s the center bond,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The pull that started six hundred years before any of this,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”That should feel—” she started.

”What,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”It doesn’t feel the way I’d have projected,” she said.

”How would you have projected it,” he said.

”Threatening,” she said. ”The bond that predates all the others by six hundred years. The frequency that corresponds to the center rather than one of the four points.” She paused. ”I would have projected jealousy. Hierarchy concern. The institutional response of someone assessing a structural threat to their position.”

”And instead,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Relief,” she said. ”Again.” She paused. ”The center holds the cardinal points in place. Without the center the compass doesn’t orient. The four cardinal bonds can be complete — and they are — but without the center bond the structure is still—”

”Incomplete,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Ninety-nine percent,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

She looked at the sunlight on the floor.

”One percent,” she said. ”Between where we are and completion.”

”Yes,” he said.

”And it’s not ours to close,” she said.

”No,” he said. ”It’s not.”

She held his gaze.

”I’m okay with that,” she said.

He looked at her.

”Are you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I ran the projection,” she said.

He looked at her.

She almost smiled again.

”One projection,” she said. ”I allowed myself one.”

”And,” he said.

”The conclusion is the same as all the others,” she said. ”This is real. The compass is real. What we are together is real.” She held his gaze. ”One percent is not a threat. It’s the last word of a sentence that has been building for twenty-seven days.” She paused. ”And six hundred years.”

He held her gaze.

”Yuna,” he said.

”Mm.”

”No more projections tonight,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Tonight,” she confirmed.

He pulled her back.

She came.

The sunlight moved across the floor.

The field ran.

The compass breathed.

Ninety-nine percent.

At 1:34 PM the fourth bond completion moved through the compass.

Lyra felt it in the flexible room.

Set the pen down.

Held the stone for a long time.

Four completions.

The four cardinal points.

Ninety-nine percent.

One bond remaining.

She looked at the document.

At the final section.

The one she’d been translating since the SS-class Gate.

The one titled: The Center Bond.

She read it again.

The center bond is the last to complete. Not because it is the weakest or the most uncertain — because it carries the weight of the anchor’s entire origin. The pull that preceded the anchor’s existence. The frequency that was there before the world changed and before the compass assembled and before any of the other bonds had names.

The center bond completes when the anchor fully acknowledges what the pull has always been. Not the ability. Not the origin hunger. Not the compass.

The thing underneath all of those.

The document does not name it.

The document says the anchor will know.

The anchor always knows.

She set the translation down.

Looked at the stone.

Picked up her phone.

No message.

Just: [waiting]

She set the phone down.

Looked at the window.

The sunlight — actual sunlight, the first in twenty-seven days — coming through the glass and landing on the stone and making it warm in a way that had nothing to do with her holding it.

The world making something warm.

For the first time since the world changed.

She looked at it.

Soon, she thought.

The last word.

Soon.
