Halochassis

Shin and Lireina set out before sunrise, eager to begin the adventure they had planned together. The morning air was crisp and cool as they stepped into the town’s teleportation circle, where glowing runes beneath their feet pulsed with gentle blue light. In a flash, the scenery around them changed, and they arrived at a quiet village tucked deep within the Eastern Mountains, nestled along the vast Cordilla mountain range.

Thin trails of smoke curled from stone chimneys, carrying the comforting scent of burning firewood and freshly baked bread through the peaceful streets. The distant chirping of birds echoed across the valley, while towering cliffs surrounded the village like silent guardians. It was a humble settlement where countless novice adventurers took their first steps toward fame, learning to survive against the weak monsters that wandered the nearby wilderness.

Before beginning their hike, the pair stopped by the local Adventurer’s Guild branch to prepare for the journey ahead. The wooden building buzzed with the chatter of rookie adventurers accepting beginner quests, while merchants displayed ropes, tents, dried meat, healing herbs, and camping equipment across crowded shelves.

Lireina carefully selected their supplies, making sure they had enough food, fresh water, blankets, and emergency medicine in case the trip lasted longer than expected. Shin helped carry the packs, though he noticed how effortlessly Lireina organized everything with the confidence of someone who had spent years traveling across dangerous lands. Once they finished their shopping, they left the village behind and followed the narrow mountain trail that disappeared into the endless sea of green.

The lower slopes of the mountain were covered in vast stretches of emerald grass that swayed gently beneath the cool morning breeze. Colorful wildflowers dotted the plains, filling the air with a faint, sweet fragrance whenever the wind swept across them. Small insects buzzed lazily between the flowers, while butterflies drifted through the sunlight like floating petals. The peaceful scenery almost made the mountain seem harmless, despite its reputation as a beginner hunting ground. Every now and then, the cheerful chirping of birds mixed with the distant cries of monsters hidden somewhere deeper within the forest, serving as a quiet reminder that danger was never too far away.

Lireina suddenly raised a hand, signaling Shin to stop. She gently pulled him behind a thick bush, its broad leaves providing enough cover to hide them from wandering monsters. Crouching low, she narrowed her emerald eyes and focused on the landscape ahead. A faint breeze brushed against her long blonde hair as she activated Eagle’s Eye, allowing her vision to stretch far beyond what an ordinary person could see. Every hill, cave entrance, and patch of woodland became clear in her sight as she carefully searched for lurking predators or unusually powerful creatures that could threaten Shin’s safety. Her expression remained calm and focused, showing the instincts of someone who had survived countless battles.

”So far, there’s no hidden boss or any high level monsters nearby,” Lireina said with a satisfied smile after ending her skill. ”This should be a perfect place for your training. You can focus on learning without worrying about something dangerous interrupting us.”

Shin, however, had only caught half of what she said.

As Lireina leaned farther forward to continue scanning the field, her unusually short hiking skirt rode up slightly. Shin’s face immediately turned bright red when his eyes unintentionally landed on the glimpse of her black panties, along with the smooth curves of her thighs illuminated by the morning sunlight. His heart pounded against his chest, and he quickly looked away, pretending to study the grass instead. The cool mountain breeze did little to calm the heat rising to his face.

”U-Um... Lena...” Shin stammered, scratching the back of his head while refusing to meet her eyes. ”I-I don’t want to sound like a pervert, but... your panties are showing. Maybe... don’t bend over too much.”

”Hmm?” Lireina turned toward him, blinking innocently for a brief moment before realizing what he meant. A faint blush quietly spread across her cheeks, though she tried her best to keep her composure. ”It’s just you and me here,” she replied with an awkward smile. ”It’s fine.”

”O-Okay...” Shin answered with an embarrassed nod, though he continued staring anywhere except in her direction.

Despite the calm expression she maintained, Lireina’s heart was in complete chaos. She wanted nothing more than to bury her burning face in the ground. Inwardly, she blamed Croft for convincing her to wear such revealing hiking clothes. The detective had personally chosen the outfit, insisting that a shorter skirt would naturally draw Shin’s attention without appearing too obvious.

If you want Shin’s undivided attention, ignite his libido. Croft’s shameless words echoed relentlessly inside her mind, making her cheeks burn even hotter. She silently cursed him for ever planting such ridiculous advice in her head. Still, seeing Shin become so flustered somehow made the embarrassment slightly worthwhile, though she would never admit that aloud.

”L-Let’s go,” Lireina said quickly before the awkward silence became unbearable.

She reached for Shin’s hand without hesitation, her fingers wrapping around his before gently pulling him out from behind the bush. The warmth of her soft hand caught Shin completely off guard, making his heart skip another beat. Neither of them spoke as they continued walking, though the quiet contact between their hands somehow felt louder than any conversation.

A few minutes later, the grassy plains opened into a broad clearing where dozens of translucent blue slimes bounced lazily across the field. Every jump made a soft, squishy sound as their jelly-like bodies wobbled and shimmered beneath the sunlight. Some absorbed droplets of morning dew, while others slowly rolled through patches of grass without paying attention to the two adventurers. Fortunately, these slimes belonged to one of the gentlest monster species in the region and only attacked when provoked.

”You wanted to learn my gun kata, didn’t you?” Lireina asked as she faced Shin.

Shin nodded enthusiastically.

Lireina placed both hands proudly on her hips, wearing a confident smile that reflected years of experience. ”Well, you won’t find this style anywhere else,” she said. ”I created it myself. During my travels, I studied countless martial arts from different nations and observed how skilled fighters moved in battle. After the war against the Demon King, I combined everything I had learned, refined every unnecessary movement, and turned it into my own unique fighting style.”

She smoothly drew the pair of pistols from the holsters at her waist before handing them to Shin. Although they were unloaded for safety, Shin could still feel the surprising weight and balance of the finely crafted weapons. After making sure he held them correctly, Lireina stepped backward and planted her feet firmly on the ground. Her breathing slowed, her posture became perfectly centered, and the playful expression she wore moments ago disappeared, replaced by the focused gaze of a legendary warrior.

”There are two basic forms in my gun kata,” Lireina explained. ”Both are heavily inspired by the poomsae of the eastern martial art called taekwondo because I rely on kicks as my primary offense. Traditional forms use punches, but I replaced those strikes with gunfire to maintain both power and distance. Every movement flows into the next without wasting energy, allowing you to attack, evade, and reposition at the same time.” She raised her arms into the opening stance and smiled. ”Watch me carefully... then copy everything I do.”

Lireina demonstrated the opening sequence with remarkable grace. Every step was light yet precise, her body flowing naturally from one stance into another. Her kicks sliced cleanly through the air with crisp whistles, while each simulated gunshot aligned perfectly with the rhythm of her movements. Even without firing live ammunition, Shin could immediately tell that every pose had been perfected through years of relentless practice. There was no wasted motion, no unnecessary flourish, only efficiency wrapped in elegance.

Shin mirrored every stance as closely as he could. His footing was clumsy, and several of his movements lacked balance, but he remained completely focused. Sweat slowly formed on his forehead despite the cool mountain air as he repeated every technique over and over, determined to memorize each motion. He wasn’t learning the style for just one reason.

First, practicing alongside Lireina allowed him to understand her better, making this training session feel like a meaningful and productive date rather than a simple lesson. Second, he wanted a reliable means of defending himself whenever he was separated from his Halochassis glove and forced into ordinary combat.

Finally, hidden beneath those sincere motivations was another reason he kept to himself. By mastering Lireina’s signature fighting style, Shin hoped to understand the strengths, habits, and subtle weaknesses within her techniques. If fate ever placed them on opposite sides of a battlefield, which is most likely, he wanted to be prepared—not because he wished to fight her, but because he understood that the future could be far crueler than either of them imagined.

It only took about fifteen minutes for Shin to grasp the fundamentals of Lireina’s two basic gun kata forms. His ability to memorize each stance and transition surprised even himself, though maintaining proper balance while moving was another challenge altogether. Every sequence demanded precise footwork, controlled breathing, and perfect timing between kicks and gunfire.

If there was one obstacle slowing his concentration, it was the occasional distraction whenever Lireina demonstrated a high kick or deep stance. Her short skirt fluttered with every swift movement, offering brief glimpses that instantly turned his face red. Ironically, instead of ruining his focus completely, those embarrassing moments fueled his determination to impress the woman he loved. Every successful movement became another opportunity to earn her praise.

”You’re surprisingly easy to teach!” Lireina said with a bright smile, clearly pleased by his progress. She folded her arms proudly before pointing toward the open field ahead. ”Now it’s time to put those forms into practice. Try them on the slimes.”

After carefully loading both pistols with practice rounds, Lireina handed them back to Shin. The pair approached the peaceful clearing where dozens of blue slimes continued bouncing lazily through the grass, completely unaware of the approaching adventurers. A gentle breeze carried the scent of wildflowers across the field as the gelatinous monsters wobbled beneath the afternoon sun. Shin inhaled deeply before stepping into the opening stance Lireina had taught him.

He lunged forward with a spinning kick that sent the first slime flying before immediately firing a shot into its airborne body. The slime burst apart with a wet splat, scattering droplets of blue jelly across the grass. Encouraged by the result, Shin continued the sequence, chaining together kicks, sidesteps, and carefully timed gunshots. His movements were still rough around the edges, but they followed the rhythm of the kata surprisingly well. One after another, five slimes dissolved into shimmering mana particles that drifted into the air before disappearing completely.

By the time the last slime vanished, Shin bent forward with both hands resting on his knees. His chest rose and fell rapidly as sweat trickled down the side of his face despite the cool mountain breeze. His legs felt heavy from the constant kicking, and every muscle in his body reminded him that graceful forms required far more stamina than they appeared to.

”So?” Lireina asked, placing her hands on her hips with a smug grin. ”How does it feel?”

Shin let out a long breath before straightening himself. ”It’s... actually pretty easy to memorize the forms,” he admitted. ”Executing them isn’t too difficult either. The problem is my kicks don’t have enough power. It took me three kicks just to finish off a single slime.”

Lireina clapped her hands with genuine admiration, her smile warm and encouraging. ”I think you did an incredible job for your first lesson,” she said. ”Remember, this technique was originally designed around elves. We’re naturally lighter on our feet, and we constantly reinforce our kicks with wind mana. That extra force is what makes the style so deadly. You’re learning the movements without any of those advantages, so don’t be discouraged.” She gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. ”With enough practice, your body will adapt.”

”Yeah... I hope so,” Shin replied with a tired smile.

Deep inside, another thought crossed his mind. If he could someday perform this gun kata while wearing the Halochassis, the armor’s enhanced strength and mobility might perfectly compensate for his lack of physical power. The image of combining Lireina’s elegant martial art with the overwhelming capabilities of Azazel filled him with excitement. It was an idea worth testing in the future.

Lireina glanced toward the clear blue sky. The sun had climbed directly overhead, bathing the mountain in warm golden light while shortening every shadow beneath the trees. The pleasant aroma of pine drifted through the air as birds sang somewhere deeper within the forest.

”Looks like it’s already lunchtime,” Lireina said cheerfully. ”Let’s eat first. We’ve still got a long hike ahead of us.”

The two found a comfortable patch of grass beneath the shade of a large oak tree overlooking the valley below. Shin spread a picnic blanket across the soft ground while Lireina unpacked the food they had purchased from the village earlier. The breeze gently rustled the leaves above them, creating a soothing rhythm that blended with the distant chirping of birds and the faint trickle of a nearby stream. It was peaceful enough that, for a while, they could almost forget they were surrounded by monsters.

Lireina unwrapped a freshly made BLT sandwich layered with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, smoky bacon, and thick slices of bread. Shin, meanwhile, enjoyed a roast beef sandwich filled with tender meat, onions, and rich sauce that released a mouthwatering aroma the moment he opened the wrapping. Alongside their meals were fresh mountain apples, sweet oranges, and chilled bottles of spring water that felt refreshingly cool against their hands.

As Shin took another bite, Lireina suddenly leaned closer.

”Hold still.”

”H-Huh?”

She reached toward his face and gently wiped a small smear of mayonnaise from the corner of his lips using her thumb. Her touch was soft and surprisingly warm, causing Shin to freeze completely. Their faces were only inches apart, and he could faintly smell the delicate floral fragrance drifting from her hair. Once she realized how close they were, Lireina quietly pulled her hand back, trying to pretend the intimate gesture had been perfectly natural.

”There,” she said with a small smile. ”You had mayonnaise on your face.”

”...Thanks,” Shin answered, his ears burning red.

After taking another bite of her sandwich, Lireina smiled mischievously.

”Mine’s really good.” She held it toward him. ”Here. Try a bite.”

Shin hesitated for a moment before leaning forward and taking a careful bite from the sandwich she was holding. The crispy bacon, fresh vegetables, and smoky flavor blended perfectly together.

”Yeah...” he admitted after swallowing. ”That’s really good.”

Lireina puffed out her cheeks playfully.

”Then it’s only fair that I get to try yours too.”

”O-Okay.”

Trying not to look too embarrassed, Shin raised his roast beef sandwich toward her. Lireina leaned forward without hesitation and took a bite from the exact spot he had been eating. Her emerald eyes brightened slightly as she chewed.

”Mmm.” She smiled happily after swallowing. ”It’s delicious. I really like how sweet the sauce is.”

Shin couldn’t help smiling back, relieved that she enjoyed it.

Without saying anything else, Lireina scooted a little closer until their shoulders and elbows lightly brushed against each other. Neither of them moved away. They simply sat together beneath the shade of the old tree, quietly enjoying their lunch while exchanging occasional smiles and lighthearted conversation. The peaceful mountain breeze carried away the awkwardness, leaving behind only the comfortable warmth of two people growing closer with every passing moment.

Once they finished eating, the pair packed away the blanket and returned their supplies to their backpacks. After making sure they had left no trash behind, they resumed following the winding mountain trail that climbed steadily toward higher elevations. The grassy plains gradually gave way to dense forests where towering pine trees blocked much of the afternoon sunlight. The air became noticeably cooler, carrying the earthy scent of damp soil, moss, and fallen leaves.

Weak monsters occasionally wandered onto the path. Slimes bounced lazily from behind rocks, while small horned rabbits and oversized wolves emerged from the undergrowth. Most barely had time to react before Lireina dispatched them with effortless precision. Her pistols barked with sharp cracks that echoed through the forest, each shot striking its target with flawless accuracy. Whenever enemies managed to close the distance, her graceful kicks finished them in a single clean motion.

Shin watched closely, occasionally joining in whenever an opportunity presented itself, using the techniques he had learned only moments earlier. Though his movements still lacked Lireina’s elegance, they grew steadier with every encounter. Step by step, hour after hour, they continued climbing through the increasingly rugged terrain, unaware that the peaceful training trip would soon lead them much deeper into the mountains than either of them had expected.

After several hours of climbing, Shin and Lireina finally reached the mountain’s first sub-summit. The trail leveled into a wide grassy plateau, rewarding their efforts with a breathtaking panorama. Below them stretched the endless emerald plains they had crossed that morning, where patches of wildflowers painted the landscape with splashes of white, yellow, and violet. In the distance, the tiny novice village rested peacefully among the foothills, its cottages no larger than pebbles from where they stood. Wisps of smoke drifted lazily from the chimneys, while narrow dirt roads wound through the valley like ribbons. Beyond the opposite side of the peak, countless mountain ranges rolled toward the horizon, their silhouettes fading into layers of hazy blue.

The sun had begun its slow descent, bathing the world in warm shades of gold, orange, and crimson. The sky seemed to catch fire as streaks of scarlet clouds stretched across the heavens, while the gentle evening breeze swept through the tall grass, carrying the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers. Every gust sent waves rippling across the hillside, making the white blossoms sway together like a sea of dancing stars. The only sounds were the whispering wind and the distant cries of birds returning to their nests, creating a peaceful silence that felt almost sacred.

”It’s a beautiful view, isn’t it?” Lireina asked softly, her emerald eyes reflecting the fiery colors of the sunset.

”Yeah,” Shin replied with a gentle nod.

He turned away from the horizon and looked only at her.

”But... not as beautiful as you.”

Lireina’s cheeks instantly flushed a deep shade of pink. She pouted to hide her growing embarrassment before playfully squeezing Shin’s bicep through his sleeve.

”Jeez,” she mumbled, avoiding his gaze. ”You really flirt every chance you get, don’t you?”

Shin chuckled quietly.

”I’m only telling the truth,” he said without hesitation. ”This sunset is amazing... but you’re still more beautiful.”

Time seemed to stop.

Lireina froze completely, unable to say a single word. Her fingers slowly loosened their grip on Shin’s arm as she stared into his sincere eyes. Her heart pounded so loudly that she was certain he could hear it. Heat rushed through her entire body, making her face, ears, and even the tips of her pointed ears burn bright red. She wanted to reply, to tease him back, or even laugh the moment away, yet her body refused to obey. It was as though every ounce of strength had vanished, leaving her rooted to the ground beneath the overwhelming weight of her emotions.

Shin glanced around the hilltop, searching for something that caught his attention. The entire summit was covered in soft green grass sprinkled with delicate white flowers that danced gracefully in the evening breeze. Their tiny petals shimmered beneath the golden sunlight, filling the air with a faint, refreshing fragrance. Smiling to himself, he crouched down and carefully picked three of the healthiest blossoms, making sure not to damage their slender stems.

He returned to Lireina and gently held them out.

”Here.”

Lireina blinked before accepting the flowers.

”...Do you remember these?” Shin asked.

A nostalgic smile slowly appeared on her lips.

”Yeah,” she answered quietly. ”You gave me one just like this a long time ago, didn’t you?”

”I did.”

Shin smiled warmly before taking a small step closer.

”Don’t move.”

Lireina obediently stood still.

With surprising gentleness, Shin reached toward her face and carefully tucked the three white flowers just above her left ear, nestling them between the strands of her silky golden hair. As his fingertips brushed against the tip of her pointed ear, he noticed how unbelievably warm it had become. The delicate skin felt soft beneath his touch, and the ear twitched ever so slightly from the contact.

The tiny gesture completely shattered the walls around Lireina’s heart.

She instinctively placed a trembling hand over her chest, feeling the frantic rhythm of her heartbeat beneath her palm. Every beat echoed loudly inside her ears, and she struggled to steady her breathing. The flowers themselves were simple, yet the care with which Shin placed them made them feel more precious than any jewel she had ever received.

”Shin...” she whispered so softly that the evening breeze almost carried the word away.

”Yeah?”

Lireina opened her mouth, only to realize she had nothing prepared to say.

She slowly shook her head, smiling shyly.

”...I just wanted to say your name.”

Shin laughed quietly, finding the answer strangely adorable.

”O-Okay.”

Unable to resist, he gently brushed a few loose strands of her silky golden hair behind her ear, carefully adjusting the flowers one final time. His fingers glided effortlessly through her smooth hair, which reflected the golden light of the setting sun like flowing silk.

”There,” he said with satisfaction after taking a step back to admire her. ”Perfect. Down to the smallest detail.”

Lireina lowered her gaze.

She could not keep these feelings locked away any longer.

Ever since they were children, Shin had always been kind. As the years passed, she had watched him grow into someone dependable, courageous, and gentle despite all the hardships he carried. He was handsome without realizing it, sincere without pretending, and thoughtful in ways that constantly caught her off guard. Somewhere along the way, the admiration she once felt had quietly transformed into something much deeper.

She might be clumsy when it came to matters of the heart.

She might be hopelessly inexperienced.

But she was not foolish enough to let the person she loved walk away without ever knowing how she truly felt.

”I have something for you too, Shin,” Lireina said, her voice barely above a whisper. ”Don’t move.”

Shin blinked in confusion.

”Okay...”

He looked at her empty hands.

”...But you’re not holding anything.”

Lireina took a slow step forward until only a few inches separated them. Shin could hear the soft rustling of her clothes in the breeze and catch the faint floral scent drifting from her hair. Before he could ask another question, she rose slightly on the tips of her toes.

A heartbeat later, her soft lips gently touched his cheek.

The kiss lasted only an instant.

Yet to Shin, it felt as though the entire world had stopped moving.

When she pulled away, her face was glowing scarlet, but her emerald eyes never left his.

Leaning close enough that only he could hear, she whispered the words she had hidden in her heart for so many years.

”I love you, Shin.”

For a moment, the wind, the sunset, and the vast mountains surrounding them all seemed to fade away.

There was only the sound of two hearts racing beneath the crimson sky.
