Endless Evolution: Last Star

Chapter 1804: Island A113

Adam wouldn’t call himself a psychologist or a manipulator who could easily read people’s minds, but he was certain he could tell if the person in front of him was lying when it came to battle.

All he needed was to see the flame in the eyes of the person in front of him. It didn’t matter if it was a dark and gloomy flame, or a bright and noble one. The main thing was that it was there, not a detached coldness, devoid of emotion.

It was precisely that kind of flame Adam saw in Farla’s eyes that made him chuckle.

”I see. It’s nice to know that even after hundreds of years, you can still retain your emotions.”

”Yes.” Farla nodded. ”If it were up to me, I would go and kill that Baron, for all the humans who have fallen because of him. However, I am not strong enough for that, and no one would allow me to go to such distant parts of the Tarnished Lands.”

Adam looked over Farla. Because of her youthful appearance, it was hard for him to believe she was dozens of times older than him, but that was a fact he must not forget.

”Losing an officer of the Gamma Division isn’t something the Citadel can afford, right? Even if, on the other hand, there’s a risk of losing a K4-Phantom.”

”Unfortunately, that’s true. I think you understand why this is happening.” Farla narrowed her eyes. She realized she hadn’t yet achieved her goal, since Adam hadn’t agreed to take on this mission yet.

Adam waved his hand dismissively.

”Sure. With enough luck and the right sequence of events, it only takes a couple of years or decades for new K4-Phantoms to appear. Me, Natta, and Sano are probably the best examples. However, no matter what happens, getting a new officer that quickly is simply impossible. Did I get that right?”

Farla smiled bitterly. She used her status only when necessary, but now Adam’s words sounded like a compliment to her.

”Basically, yes. So, Adam, I think Silvana, Aiden, and the others are already waiting for you down below. You have to make a decision. What will your answer be?”

Adam narrowed his eyes as he leaned forward.

”Show me this Baron. I want to take a look at that bastard before I give my answer. You do have his photo, right?”

”Sure.”

The next moment, several windows appeared before Adam, each showing the same man, but photographed from different angles and distances.

In one, the man was seen fighting the Phantoms, who stood no chance against him. In another, only his back was visible as he made his way to the Tarnished Lands.

One photo after another flashed before Adam’s eyes until the final one appeared.

The man with chest-length gray hair sat cross-legged on what appeared to be a lifeless field. There was nothing around him but dark earth and jagged rocks in the distance. His eyes were closed, and the wind ruffled his hair, which swept across his pale, rather rough skin.

Adam glanced at another photo to see that the monster had amber eyes with round pupils, indistinguishable from human ones.

The man wore nothing but a loose black robe and heavy boots resembling a military uniform.

”What’s this bastard’s name? He looks strong.”

Farla nodded.

”That’s Breydar. The Baron-level monster we’re asking you to kill. To be more precise, he’s a Lesser Lord who fled to the Gray Sea for reasons still unknown to you.”

Tap.

Farla tapped the hologram, and a map of the Gray Sea appeared before Adam. On the right side of the map was the border of the Tarnished Lands, while the rest was filled with dots, islands scattered throughout the Gray Sea.

”He was last seen here.” Farla pointed to one of the islands.

As soon as she touched it, it lit up, and all available information appeared before Adam.

[Island - A113.]

”A113? Why that specific number? Couldn’t you just give it a name?” Adam scratched the back of his head.

Farla smiled bitterly.

”Adam, I’m afraid you can’t even imagine how many islands there are in the Gray Sea. What you see is a convenient system we’ve created and refined over several hundred years. The closer the number is to 1,000, the farther the island is from the shore, and therefore, the more dangerous.”

”Wait, are you saying that from the Tarnished Lands, there are nearly a thousand islands in the Gray Sea?”

Strangely enough, Farla shook her head, but a sly smirk appeared on her face.

”There are far more than a thousand islands there. You’d better figure out quickly, Adam, where you’re going. The Gray Sea is a place whose scale you still don’t fully grasp.”

Adam narrowed his eyes as he looked at the description of the island before him.

Unfortunately, there was nothing noteworthy in the window. It was a desolate, abandoned island with no valuable resources or artifacts. If Breydar hadn’t chosen this island to gather energy and recover his strength, Island A113 would have remained unnoticed.

”You said that the closer the number is to 1,000, the more dangerous the island. But what about islands with four-digit numbers? What happens if I end up on, say, Island A1150?”

In an instant, Farla’s face darkened, and her eyes grew deeper.

”It’s dangerous, Adam. You shouldn’t even think about it. Even if you were a Second Rank Phantom, I wouldn’t recommend you venture into such distant parts.”

Step.

Farla stepped forward as she shifted the map aside, revealing the locations of the more distant islands.

”The Gray Sea surrounds the four great lands, and the islands with four-digit numbers are literally on the edge of our world. We have limited information even about the nearest islands. We know nothing about the more distant ones.”

She stared at him.

”Until you become one of the strongest in the world, I wouldn’t advise you to even go near such places, for your own safety.”

Adam looked at Farla for a moment before nodding deeply.

”I see. I accept the mission.”

Farla blinked.

Adam stepped toward the Void Route as he looked back at her over his shoulder.

”I’ll kill that bastard. It’s the least I can do for all those Phantoms who died at his hands.”

Farla smiled and nodded obediently.

”I’m glad to hear that. In that case, you should head to the Void Transit.”

”Sure, I’ll do that right now.”
